We stumbled into this neighborhood joint and couldn't have been happier about it! We had the chicken Casado and surf and turf. Fresh and delicious. Authentic Costa Rican cuisine. Great for gluten free too! Great service. Fun lunch vibe.

The menu says it's the national dish of Costa Rica. Pollo, gallo pinto, sweet plantains, cabbage, salad, over-easy egg. Hella filling and definitely tasty and filling. Service: 5/5. If not, you better run there, and bring your appetite because the portions are huge and the food is delicious. The dinner plates are loaded with food. It's a chaotic cornicopia of flavors on each plate that are really delicious! Here's what I enjoyed here: Tico Tropicana (Irazu's signature cocktail that is amazing!) I popped in here because I wanted good Latino food near my house and this place did not disappoint. First off the portion is incredibly huge and every bit of it was delicious. I got the chicken one and the chicken could have had slightly more flavor, but the plate in general was very tasty. I also had a coconut shake, which surprised me in a very good way. It was perfect for the heat wave and tasted amazing. Service was quick and kind. There weren't a lot of people in the early afternoon and I was seated inside. I will absolutely be returning on an empty stomach.

The chifrijo had crispy pork and so much flavor from the veggies; we loved pairing it with the chips. The empanada was flaky and crispy, and I would definitely want to try the other flavors. The skirt steak casado was so tasty with the rice/beans, egg, salad, jalapeños, plantains, and skirt steak. It was a mixture of flavors, but it paired so well together! The service was perfect since the waiter was recommending us dishes; he was very kind and made sure to give us good recommendations. He also gave us complimentary chips and salsa when we asked! The ambiance was very nice and liked how it was themed off of Costa Rica. I would definitely come back again!

They have been in the same location since 1990 and still feature the original recipes from the founder's early days. Bring your appetite and a friend, you will need them, portions are enormous! This is what I ate here: Mango Maravilla (Mango Margarita) Mixed ceviche was great! Casado with Skirt Steak, there's a real good reason it's the National Dish of Costa Rica. Que Rico! Irazú was good! Friendly servers and hosts. Shrimp ceviche was just okay, but our skirt steak plates were very good. I would probably get the steak Casado over the steak plate just because it had more flavor. The only thing I didn't like were the little bugs on the table flying around, but other than that, I had a great time!
After passing Irazu countless I mean countless times passing by, we finally went on a limb to stop by for lunch. Irazu truly impress me with its bold flavors and high-quality dishes. You can really taste the difference in the premium ingredients they use; everything feels fresh, thoughtfully prepared, and a notch above what you'll find elsewhere. The quality helps justify the price, though it is still on the higher side, so it's more of an occasional treat than an everyday spot. That said, the flavor, consistency, and care that go into each dish make Irazu well worth visiting. If you value top-tier ingredients and memorable meals, this place will deliver. I see why they were in drivers diners and dives! Honestly even the kids menu quesadilla cheese was top notched (pricy) and super super tasty. My daughter loved it! Def would skip the iced horchata cafe it was a huge miss for me. Very lacking of horchata and just tasted like water down espresso.

The rice was amazing as well. The chicharron was extra crispy! I just wish it was seasoned some more. The yuca fries weren't salted enough either. On top of that, the garlic oil on the side added nothing to the meal. This dish was kinda underwhelming given all the amazing plates we had. We also had the horchata, which was unbearably sweet. However, we added the cafe (coffee) to it and it was substantially better! I would order the horchata cafe next time! Overall, I would definitely come back and try the burritos or sandwiches!

Delicious! I had never been to a Costa Rican restaurant in the U.S. before so always exciting to try something new. Larger than it looked from the outside which made a walk in dinner easy. Casual friendly atmosphere, the patio was lovely. A friend and I split a skirt steak pepito and the casado, the national dish of Costa Rica, with coconut shrimp. The pepito was my favorite, everything about it was perfect. We had a lot of leftovers of the casado - so much food! Had never had that combination of items in a dish before and loved the combination of flavors and textures. I don't live in Chicago but have several friends that live walking distance from Irazu so I'd been wanting to try it for so long. worth the wait and I'm looking forward to coming back and trying more on the menu! read more

Irazu was one place I really wanted to be good, but unfortunately, it was a disappointment. I ordered the platter, which came with chicken, egg, avocado, plantains, and rice. There was definitely a lot of food, but unfortunately, none of it had much flavor or seasoning. I'm not sure if it was because I went close to closing, but the food just didn't live up to my expectations. The wait staff was extremely nice and provided great service, so that was definitely a plus. Unfortunately, based on my experience, I wouldn't revisit. I really wanted to enjoy this place, but the lack of seasoning made it difficult to do so. read more

We stumbled upon this place while doing the garden walk and we were all SO happy with it! I went with the happy hour wings, the arugula mango salad. The wings were breaded and extra sauced. I truly enjoyed them' My partner and our friend got the steak pepito sandwich... HOLY COW. Get that! Anywhere that has amazing chimichurri, I'm in. Our friend got shrimp ceviche and she said it was weirdly sweet but still ate it. The chips seemed a little stale, the salsa was delicious and a bit spicy! The drinks on happy hour are stellar. One of our friends considered only drinking, but by the end of it he was glad he didn't go that route. We sat outside and it was a bit loud from the train/motorcyclists trying to prove something, so I would advise against that if it is something you'd be frustrated with. Our waitress was top notch and once the table bussers were reminded to refill waters, they were too. Amazing place!! We will be back if we're in the area. read more

OMG. I feel like I've been living under a rock--because the best Costa Rican food you'll ever eat is right here at Irazú. It's family-owned and has been here for 34 years. From the incredibly warm service to every unforgettable dish, I honestly can't even pick a favorite. At first, I was sure it was the avocado and mango salad topped with the most flavorful shrimp... but then I had the Casado skirt steak, and that became my favorite... and then came the shrimp ceviche. Bottom line: every dish is amazing. Warm chips with dipping sauces show up first, setting the tone for what's to come. The vibe? Gorgeous and laid-back, with windows open on every side and cozy outdoor seating that invites lingering conversations. The food, the atmosphere, the people--this place is pure magic. If you haven't been, you're seriously missing out. Pro tip: If you're lucky and the owners' abuela stops by to help in the kitchen, ask for the secret menu empanada--stuffed with guava and cheese. Yum! We popped in mid-afternoon on a Sunday and had a delicious late lunch. My husband and I shared the skirt steak pepito with fries and plantains. The sandwich and plantains were fantastic, fries were fine but I'd definitely choose something else as my second side next time! The space is very bright and fun and the service was fairly quick. I was so happy to get free chips and salsa here, but the chips were a bit on the oily side. We got the chicken burrito and ceviche. Unfortunately, both were really mediocre and not very flavorful. The burrito could have been packed more with filling. The ceviche needed more citrus. I've been wanting to try this place for a while! Especially after 90 miles Cuban closed. I ordered the traditional surf and turf dinner which came with shrimp, skirt steak, gallo pinto, plantains, and cabbage salad. The shrimp and steak were great! Good flavor and portion for the price. I really enjoyed the cabbage salad and plantains as well. The pico gallo was a miss though. My husband got the steak burrito which was also delicious! We ordered the patacones and empanadas to share. I would skip the empanadas. They were alright but for $15 nothing special. The patacones were the one real disappointment, dry and not much flavor but the green sauce with it was amazing. My boyfriend and I have been meaning to go here ever since we saw it on diners, drive-ins, and dives. You don't see a lot of Costa Rican food in Chicago so this was definitely a fun meal! It's a very casual place and the food comes out relatively quickly. We shared one of the traditional Costa Rican Panini sandwiches with steak and chicken. They actually gave us two Panini's because they messed up our order originally- which was nice. Then we both got burritos and these were very good ! They were huge honestly and I could only eat half. I will argue with anyone who thinks that Irazú doesn't have the best Costa Rican in Chicago! It was so good that I went twice..... back to back It's COSTA RICAN COMFORT FOOD! Coasta Rican SOUL FOOD, even. It took me right back to my visit to Costa Rica where the food was SOOOOO GOOD and full of flavor AND your plate was ALWAYS FULL! They also have VEGETARIAN OPTIONS and good drinks! Here's what I tried: Patacones- double fried green plantains with a roasted garlic oil! I could put that garlic oil on everything! Pico de gallo w/black bean puree- the black bean puree had sweet plantains and cheese in it Shrimp ceviche- one of THE BEST ceviches I've had. And that avocado with the sauce on top?!? Surf & Turf dinner & Chicken Casado - Flavor on top of flavor and SO MUCH FOOD! I can go on and on about it. The way the meats were seasoned and cooked?! I need to kiss the chef!!! When I doubled back for lunch : Chicken Pepito sandwich with rice & beans and sweet plantains. DELICIOUS!!!!! Drink: Tico Tropicana - Irazus signature cocktail! It's a MUST TRY! Learned about this place from an IG video and decided to try it out tonight with my partner. The host greeted us warmly and seated us in a great table where we got the benefit of the cross breeze from all of the open windows all around the perimeter of the restaurant. It does have the feel of being transported to Costa Rica! We tried the empanadas: the shrimp was definitely our favorite, the chicken was a little dry, and the beef was decent. We both ordered burritos; he got the surf n turf and I got the skirt steak. Both were delicious and sooo filling! But I think the surf n turf was a little better than mine! I also tried the watermelon Fresca which was so delicious! The service was fast and great also! The experience overall was great! read more

Skirt steak was absolutely divine. I don't understand burritos stuffed with rice, and this one had none. Instead, it was filled with juicy tender steak, beans, cheese, and veggies. The house tortilla chips had a spicy green sauce that paired so well with the burrito. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, with a generous amount of slaw. Could have used a wedge of lemon/lime as the flavor was pretty mellow, and I realized in general the food wasn't as salty as expected. (Tortilla chips could've used more salt as well) The flour tortilla on the burrito was perfect, and the corn tortillas on the tacos were fluffy and softer than others. read more

I haven't had Costa Rican food since my vacation there in 2023! My sister took me here while on vacation to visit her. She likes the sandwiches here so we got the skirt steak sandwich and also got the coconut shrimp casado, both to share. The sandwich was delicious and very tasty. The casado plate was a bit dry. It would have been nice with a pico or other salsa on the side. The shrimp was a bit bland for my taste too. Maybe just needed some more salt. We also both got shakes. One oatmeal with a horchata base, and the other guanabana. I really enjoyed the oatmeal one with horchata as it was sweet and cinnamony. The other one was more fruit based, soursop I believe, and my sister enjoyed that one. The vibes here were cute, and they had all the windows open since it was a gorgeous afternoon. read more

We finally tried Irazu Costa Rican restaurant. It's a block from our apartment and always smells great. The service was a bit sluggish after the chips and excellent green salsa came, but it was a nice night so we didn't mind. Donna got chicken casada-breast with fried plantains and cabbage salad with an over easy egg that I ate. She declared it just OK. Flavors were a bit underwhelming for her taste. I had skirt steak pepito and it was excellent! Tender and well-seasoned with sauteed onions, white cheese, black bean spread and Lizano sauce on pressed french bread. Only managed a picture of half of my sandwich. Next time she'll try something else and I bet my rating goes up! read more
I love that they open the windows to allow air to circulate. Some time ago, I received a coupon for a free oatmeal shake. Perfect timing... it was yummy!! As always, clean environment & polite staff!!! Upon our arrival, I didn't see any other patron order or eat, so I assumed that they we're done eating. To my surprise, apparently their food hadn't arrived yet. No wonder it seemed like the time it took for our food took a bit longer than usual. What a treat! My son's class took a field trip here because they wanted to learn more about Costa Rica and try the food after learning about different counties in Latin America during Hispanic Heritage Month. We were a small group and they took good care of us! We were greeted with smiles and chips and salsa for the table. The salsa is green , very spicy , but very flavorful. I got the beef and potato empanadas and a passion fruit shake. My son got the sweet plantains. Other dishes ordered were chicken tacos , ticos tacos, horchatas , rice / beans. Nobody was disappointed. I personally want to return and try more. As an fyi the empanadas obviously lose their crunch if you reheat but you don't lose the flavor. read more
