The drinks and food never disappoint. Their apps are amazing, dinners are rich in flavor and the desserts/drinks round out any meal perfectly. Went here for a self date & came out feel good & full. The bar for singles is nice because you can people watch while munchin. I enjoyed the complimentary chips & verde sauce. The sandwich was good but the plate it came on was kinda inefficient. I got the chicken & was happy with what I got, just was looking for more pizzaz of flavor but it was solid. The meal cost $14/$15 which is normal for Chicago prices. Will definitely come back to try other menu options as I'm new to Costa Rican food & was just coming for a bite. *downside: they gave me a small container where i couldnt bring the leftover chips home since I didn't finish my food. read more

These pictures are from the first time i went. But i had to come back to try it again and everything was a 10/10! The Casado dish with chicken is soooooo good. The yuca fries bomb! And their smoothies were so light and tasty. I've actually ordered catering from them for my job 2xs and everyone loves it. They are always asking when can we order it again. Would definitely recommend! read more

I ordered Surf & Turf Burrito - garlic shrimp, skirt steak, pico de gallo, black beans. Added avocado. Great flavors all together. Shrimp was cooked right. Steak was tender but not juicy or fatty. I definitely recommend adding the creamy avocado to the burrito. I think the burrito could be improved and taste more substantial with seasoned rice or potato inside. But if that's not very traditional, the original burrito is still tasty. This was a pickup order. No issues with service. It wasn't hard to find street parking nearby. read more

Irazu has been on my list to try for a while, so I'm glad I finally came here! The food was delicious, service was good, and prices are very reasonable. We were given some chips and salsa to start, which was nice for working up my appetite! I got the Pepito sandwich with chicken, and this was super tasty. It was very flavorful and I especially liked the sautéed onions. There's lots of other interesting items on the menu so I'd love to come back soon! The food is delicious and flavorful, and everything is reasonably priced. I had a great experience here. read more

Never had Costa Rican food and was very pleased with Irazu! Came with some friends for lunch and the service was prompt, with the food coming out hot and freshly cooked to order. The complimentary chips were super crisp with an extremely spicy but tasty green salsa (and I consider myself to have a pretty good spice tolerance). My friends each got a guanabana (soursop) shake, and all raved about it, but I refrained because I wasn't as hungry. We split an order of yucca fries which were generously portioned, extra crispy, and came with a tasty, super garlicky oil dip. I ordered the skirt steak pepito (sandwich) which I think was the best thing our table got. The skirt steak was freshly grilled, super juicy, and came in big slabs on the sandwich. I'm not sure what's in their "lizano sauce" but it was delicious, and added a perfect combination of creaminess, savoriness, and tang to the sandwich. My friends got chicken and skirt steak platters which came loaded with seasoned rice, meat, plantains, cabbage salad, and an over-easy egg. I got to try some of the chicken breast, which couldve been a bit juicier but was marinated and grilled nicely. My friends seemed to like their platters but not as much as my sandwich, where each bite was delicious and full of flavor. Overall, service was good, prices were reasonable, and food was tasty. If would highly recommend the skirt steak sandwich, but there's a lot of stuff on the menu I still have yet to try! read more

Oh my goodness -- words can't describe how amazing this place is. The food, the hospitality... unbeatable! When I was approaching the restaurant and caught a sniff of the delicious food a few blocks away, I knew it was going to be a knockout! The chips and guacamole are incredible. Homemade chips... and the flavor of the guac -- jeez. I've never had guacamole this fresh before! Make sure you order it! For my entree, I had had the shrimp burrito and added tostones... make sure you add tostones!!!! You're doing yourself a disservice if you don't... Every bite left me shook! The flavors that were packed into this burrito will take you straight to heaven. For $13, it's a huge burrito... I thought I would save my leftovers for lunch but ended up finishing it off once I got home -- it was sooo good. This is the family owned, hole in the wall spot that all our dreams are made of! Ask for Gabriel whenever you visit! He made our first experience exceptional. He was cracking jokes, made some great recommendations and encouraged us to explore the menu. I will be back to try the empanadas! read more

I love this spot! byob with great mixers and delicious food! I went here last summer and I got the chifrijo and it was SO GOOD. came back yesterday (Thursday evening) with a group of 4 other girls and it was a really fun time! i got the chicken Casado (traditional Costa Rican dish) which was AMAZING - stewed chicken, rice, beans, veggies, and plantains -- yum! The others tried a lot of different items and all enjoyed them. It was good that I made a reservation bc it was busy! Splitting the check was a bit of a pain bc they only take 1 card. We lingered quite a bit but the servers were patient with us. read more

Their new happy hour hitssss in the best way!! I love the drinks and their specialty cocktails. The Tico Tropicana is 10/10 and Irazu's signature drink. Ordered the Pepito sandwich with skirt steak, jalapeños with the salad and plantains. The sandwich was one of the most delicious things I have had in a while. The steak was cooked perfectly and the ingredients blended together really nicely. The salad was more like a slaw which I typically don't like but this one was pretty solid. I definitely will be ordering again. read more

We wanted something different so we tried this Costa Rican joint. Let me tell you, the staff was amazing especially our host Eliza who suggested the Oatmeal shake and the Pepito steak sandwich which was good. The Oatmeal shake is a reason to come back. Its horchata blended in oatmeal which gives it body and a cookie after taste. The pork belly which is ridiculously crispy and tasty in the Chifrijo makes this appetizer. Combined that with rice, tomatoes, black beans and Lozano sauce and it works. The chicken Casado was plentiful and satisfying. The sauce on this entree is distinct and refreshing. The vibe here was chill, our server was eager to please. Outdoor seating who's tables were surf boards - cool! And it's just off the Milwaukee 606 entrance. read more

Irazú Costa Rican Restaurant & Catering 1865 N Milwaukee Ave Chicago, IL 60647 October 27, 2022 Thursday - 11:40 AM for lunch 1 Adult Atmosphere - 5 stars Food - 5 stars Service - 5 stars Background - I finally have some time on this business trip to venture out and try a Diner, Drive-In, and Dives restaurant. Atmosphere - A quick journey to Costa Rica when you walk through the door. That is I love going to unique, family owned restaurants. I love that when you walk in there is a map with the location indicating where they are from Costa Rica. Vibrant colors fill the place. Food Drink - I had the El Puerto, it said their counties version of an Arnold Palmer. Surprise Surprise it is a frozen drink. It was amazing. I want some rum with it, stat!! Appetizer - Free chips and salsa, a green salsa that had a little zip. I added some of that salsa to some of the meat that escaped from my sandwich. Lunch - Of course I went with something that Guy featured on Triple D, the Pepitos. I was not disappointed with that sandwich. It was amazing. You can pick your protein, I went with the steak. The sandwich is rib eye steak, sauteed onions, cheese, beans and Lizano sauce. My mouth is craving it now. Those beans and Lizano sauce must be the secret to this amazing sandwich. You do not notice them but there is something special with this sandwich. Service - One guy was working the front of the house. I was the first customer today so he was able to take care of my needs. By the time left the restaurant was half full. Future - I wish I lived closer to this place, so yes. read more

I have a hard time believing I have not written a review for Irazu before. The food is excellent: Chicken in burritos and sandwiches is grilled. Skirt steak is grilled as well. White fish ceviche is fresh and flavorful. I am a fan of the horchata. We have dined in and ordered delivery numerous times. Delivery is typically quicker, than indicated when order is placed directly with the restaurant. During the pandemic, Irazu was one of our go to restaurants. However, the following is what has prompted this review. The last time we ordered, I tripped on the way to the door. Not only was the deliverer concerned I was not hurt, but I received a call from Henry (the owner) to check on my wellbeing. I think this exemplifies going beyond typical customer service. read more

My brother got this food catered for his wedding anniversary party and it was absolutely delicious! Literally every single thing was to die for! They even had rice mixed with beans and I pretty much never ever eat beans, but it was really good! I was pleasantly surprised. The next day, my brother said that the food was probably the number 1 thing people talked about because everyone loved it soo much. When I'm in town again and I get a chance, I would love to try out their physical restaurant. read more

First time trying a pepito, and I loved it! My dad got one as well, and he can be pretty critical, but he also thought it was great. Also got some empanadas. I liked the spinach and cheese. Not a fan of the beef and potatoes, but my dad liked it. Seating is indoors, but surrounded by large windows that they fully open when the weather is nice, so has an outdoor vibe. Went on a Tuesday at 5:30-6:30, and it wasn't too busy. We had a reservation for a party of 8, but probably didn't need it. I came with family (including small children), but would definitely be a great spot for dates, friend groups, etc. read more

This place is always fuego! Their pepito sandwich with meat is stellar. The veggie version is beans, caramelized onions and avocado. It's still good but doesn't compare the meaty counterparts. Would love to see them try some with fake meats like beyond or impossible for vegetarians. Gotta get a horchata to wash it down and plantains on the side. Service was friendly and I love this space, especially in the summer when all the windows are open and the music is pumping. It literally feels like you could be in Costa Rica when the Chicago humidity is thick read more

SO SO GOOD. Irazu is a Chicago institution and Henry, the owner, is awesome. If you have not been here, do yourself a favor and go. I get the steak burrito (upgrade to skirt steak) with avocado and then I pour Irazu salsa (the best salsa ever) on it. It is so good that I have to come in to get this burrito fix every week. I was out of town last week and I couldn't make it in for my burrito, so now I am currently experiencing Irazu burrito withdrawal. Anyway. Go! Support this wonderful local business! read more

I'v been here half a dozen times in the past 20 years. The food has always been very good but the atmosphere is now adorable and spacious ( used to be sparse and tiny). Great airy in door/ outdoor seating options. Food is traditional fresh Costa Rican cuisine. One thing- sometimes the owners seem to go on vacation and close the restaurant out of no where. I'd call before you trek over there. Chicago gem. Fair prices and good service. Love this casual little joint. read more
