I'd have sworn I'd tried this place before, but I guess not. We stopped by here a few weeks back, and I ended up getting the yuzu ramen. The yuzu flavor was pretty subtle, so I'd probably try something else on the menu next time. My biggest complaint is that the parking is terrible unless you luck out and get something nearby. Oishi karage is amazing! The sauce can't be missed, and highly recommend as an appetizer. It also took a bit to get seated despite many open seats. Otherwise, I'd love to come try more of the menu.

I got the akamaru modern ramen with tamago. It's a bit annoying that you have to get tamago, a standard ramen topping, as an add on, and the egg was boiled too much but marinated well. I liked the chashu, which wasn't too fatty nor too lean and was flavorful. The broth was kind of mediocre and bland, and the noodles were sticking together. The takoyaki was pretty good and had tasty sauces and was very hot. There is a decent amount of seating inside, and the food was ready in around 15 minutes.

I'm always a little surprised that Ippudo doesn't have a clean sweep of five stars across the board. I come here for one thing and one thing only: the vegan ramen. And to be clear, I do not order vegan ramen anywhere else. This is the exception. It's rich, deeply satisfying, and has that full-bodied, slurpable depth you usually associate with tonkotsu. No "this is good for vegan" qualifiers needed, it's just straight-up good ramen. If you've been sleeping on it because it's vegan, don't. This is the move.

What a disappointment. There were a ton of little flying bugs in the restaurant. When I pointed out that I and the couple sitting next to me had killed several of them, the waitress said "Oh yeah, we have a problem. Sorry about that." We moved to another table, but she said they were pretty much all going to be the same?! The food was decent, but the experience was not. They better figure it out.

I recently went back to ippudo berkeley. this most recent trip, the restaurant was packed, but we were still able to get seated quite quickly. I went with my go-to order, the karaka spicy ramen. Flavor is still great as usual, noodle texture is soft I do have to drop ippudo 1 star from my last review 3 years ago. They've raised the prices and the ramen at $19 does not include egg. The egg is an extra 4 dollars (!) now. Feels not as great of value as it used to be, but ippudo is still a consistently decent ramen

Came here on a weekday for lunch so service was quick with no wait at all. They do have plenty of seating, so I imagine even during busier hours it's not too bad. We tried the Akamaru and the Karaka Spicy Ramen, plus a side of karaage. Both broths were rich, fatty, and creamy, but I def liked the Akamaru more. If you get the Karaka, I recommend asking for the spicy paste on the side so you can control the heat level. I only used half of mine. Noodles were al dente, but they use the thin style which isn't really my favorite texture-wise. The chashu was so soft and melt in your mouth good! I just wish they gave more than 2 slices because it really wasn't enough. Also kinda suck that you have to pay extra for the egg, especially since the ramen itself is on the higher end. As for the karaage, it was juicy and has a nice crunch, but nothing stood out flavor-wise.

As someone from SoCal who knows good food (most places in Berkeley are mid), this place is one of the more decent spots I've found. Food is sugoi and service was fast and good. Would go again for ramen on a cold day out. I always get a bit of extra noodles to eat with the broth at the end. A bit pricy for the portion you get but what can you expect for Bay Area ramen?

Yuzu shoyu ramen for the soul
Cassandra P.

My first time trying Ippudo and the timing was right since we had just crossed the Bay bridge on a cold evening and had a sore throat too, so ramen was our comfort food. I ordered the yuzu shoyu ramen. The broth was flavorful and not overbearing and had a nice citrus note. The citrus taste was balanced and complemented everything else, the noodles, the chicken and the bamboo shoots. My only gripe is that they charge for eggs and other toppings. But the egg ties everything together so can't have the ramen without it! Husband ordered the akamaru modern ramen and the broth and pork chashu was yummy. We had the mango cheesecake for dessert and it was creamy, cheesy and room temperature but served on a cold plate with whipped cream and fresh strawberries! Divine! Service was quick and friendly and we got our food in under 20 minutes. It wasn't too busy when went- there were probably 5 other customers dining at the same time. Dining areas were nice and clean and bathrooms were clean and tidy as well which is always a plus at any restaurant. Parking can be a hassle and you might need to drive around the block a couple of times before a parking spot on the street becomes available. Payment at the meters (curbside street parking) are not required after 6pm on weekdays I believe. Definitely a must-try place when you're in the area!

I've always seen Ippudo online and never got to try until this morning! Got the spicy karage - we prefer original. Bf said it reminded him of Tyson wings...enoki mushroom was star of the meal. My Akamaru ramen wasn't as creamy as I'd like but the pork chasu was good. Also tried the yuzu shoyu but since it's not something I prefer I feel like I'm the wrong person to review it. Overall just think there's so much ramen competition nowadays. Service 10/10

So delicious and worth the price. Nice looking interior and fast service. Definitely will be coming here again soon!

Ippudo is chain so we did expect medium quality food and so so service. Pleasantly surprised by the quality of the service: very attentive servers, true professionals. Food was ok, nothing otherworldly and definitely had better broths before. But all in all, one of the best ramen options in Berkeley! Oh yeah, their menu is only accessible through a qr (digital) menu so took screenshots!

Spicy miso add a generous amount of scallions and let that muthafucka cook!

Ask the Community - Ippudo Berkeley

Is there gluten free noodles? And broth?

At the moment we do not have gluten free noodles or broth.

Is the vegetarian ramen vegan?

I don’t think the noodles are vegan. They contain eggs. Not sure if they offer alternative types of noodles. The broth is for sure vegan.

Is the vegetarian option vegan?

Yes. Be sure you ask for vegan!

What is the current average wait time on a Fri/Sat. night early evening -- 6:30'ish?

20ish minutes

Do they do take out orders?

No.

Is there still a line out the door with this bad air quality?

If you go before 6:15 usually lines are that bad.

Do they sell beer and sake?

yup

What is the wait time for (weekend) lunch?

I went for a Saturday lunch at 2 and the wait was 20 minutes so expect 20-60 minutes. They tend to seat smaller groups communal style so if larger group you will need to wait longer.

Is the Ippudo location in SF the same owner as this one?

I would assume it's the same owner for all of them.

As of January 2018, what is the wait like for dinner?

Early in the week, 30mins or less. Friday and Saturday small parties, 30-40mins

Do they serve Brooklyn Lager at this location?

No, only Asahi, Sapporo, Kirin Ichiban is on the menu

When will you guys start doing takeout and working with delivery services like Postmates or uber eats?

the whole point of not offering delivery or take out is that they want people to come in and experience their food at the table. they don't want the quality to go south by packaging up their food (noodles get soggy, or stick together either when…

I had a bad case of food poisoning after eating there last night. My stomach hurts right after I left and vomit after I got home. I didn't eat anything all day except at your restaurant? I might need to file a compliant with health department?

If you have food poisoning after a dinner somewhere, it could well be that you were poisoned by something you ate much earlier in the day.

Are there gluten-free options?

Right now they can only offer to substitute bean sprouts for the noodles

Do you normally leave a tip at Ippudo?

Yes, I would tip at a Japanese-based restaurant in a US location, and I don't tip at US restaurants in Japan (such as TGI Fridays and Anna Miller's in Shinagawa).

Address there vegan and vegetarian ramen options?

They have vegetarian/vegan options now

What's the largest party size you can accommodate?

Largest table can seat 8

Is there any possibility that the ramen gonna run out before it closes?

No, but maybe the extra toppings on the menu.

Is it possible to reserve a table?

Hey Shannenia, we’re excited for you to join us! Everyone’s anxiously waiting to come check us out, so we’ll be on a first come first serve basis. Hope to see you then!

Can we make reservations?

Hey Joanne, thanks for reaching out. Everyone’s anxiously waiting to come check us out, so we’ll be on a first come first serve basis. Hope to see you then!

This cute little ramen shop has such perfect lighting coming through thanks to thier skylight. We weren't actually hungry so we shared the following: TONKOTSU - $16.50 (Regular) Pork Belly Chashu, Bamboo Shoots, Red Onion, Wood Ear Mushrooms, Green Onion, Ajitama Egg. You get a choice of noodles to pick: 1.) Hakata - Thin Straight 2.) Sapporo - Medium Thick Wavy Figured since it's my first time here, I choose the most basic version of their bowl of ramen. I chose Sapparo and for some reason expected it to be thicker/wider, but regardless it was still good! The presentation of this bowl is just gorgeous, served on a small wooden platter. The red onion is chopped, and the pork Belly is quite tender. Regarding the egg, you get just half. Overall this bowl of ramen is creamy, rich, and the right amount of flavor and salt. But still make sure to drink at least a glass of water! CREAMY CHASHU PORK CROQUETTES - $8.50 I have never seen anything like this so I must give it a try! It actually didn't come out piping hot, so I was able to drive in right away! It was definitely creamy (like ramen) and had pieces of the Chau's pork, encased in a crispy and warm batter that was deep fried. It also comes with a katsu sauce and I really enjoyed it. The staff was friendly and didn't make us feel bad for ordering enough of just one, but man I was so full. Had to walk around downtown Berkeley for awhile.

Not kidding when I say I've been ogling their Yelp photos for a few days prior to this visit. The broth is exceptional, but the noodles are pedestrian. Chewy sure but doesn't quite rival the bounciness of Mensho's mochi noodles. It's delicious all the same though. The prices are a bit high, given that bowls only come with one chashu slice and half an egg, but excusable given the dire state of our economy. Will I say this is the best ramen I've ever had? Probably not. But it's a very delicious bowl that'll satisfy any ramen hankering.

We entered a few minutes before peak dinner times, so there were seats to choose and sit from. By the time we left, mostly all the seats were filled up, so I would suggest coming in early. I liked the naming for each of the ramen dishes, some I recognized the names from Hawai'i. For this round, we ordered 3 different types of ramen: the Kuni, Broke da Mouth, and the Miso Hungry. These orders also came around the same time. A notable elements I liked about the ramen was that the noodles were chewy and springy, and the broth was smooth and easy to drink. I also didn't have the urge to drink lots of water either, so the seasoning was perfect. The other element was that I got to enjoy the ramen's broth and noodles as the stars of the dish, and the proteins, like the pork were supporting roles. For me, what I enjoy ramen are the broth and noodles, so I'm happy that these are prominent in the dish, rather than me having other chow down a thick slab of pork. This restaurant hit the right marks for what a delicious ramen is for me, so I'll come back, and maybe try their other broths.

It was conveniently located across the street from the venue, and the unassuming outside of the restaurant did not hint at the amount of fun, ambiance, good food, and warm hospitality contained inside. First, there is the name. Not sure if it's some sort of play on words, secret joke, or if it's someone's actual name, but it works, kinda. It's kinda a restaurant, kinda a bar, kinda of a hangout, and kinda fun. The tiny entrance and plain facade reveals a bustling world of delicious food, tasty beverage, and lots of decorative eye candy to keep you looking around the space while you are hanging out with friends, on a date, or just relaxing after a long day. The decorations there are very upbeat, eclectic, fun, and distinctly Japanese pop culture. Posters, banners, flags, lanterns, toys, and trinkets can be found all over the restaurant, and made it fun to keep looking around and discover new novel things to look at. I did feel like I was in an authentic Izakaya somewhere in Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Ebisu in Tokyo. The place had a lot of personality & personal flair in an otherwise, tiny & industrial small warehouse type space. Service was excellent. The host was the cute & personable Mina, who couldn't have been more accommodating, patient, friendly, and engaging. It was very busy, and even though it was our first time there, Mina made us feel welcome into their home and was also very helpful to guide us around their experience. The other staff were less engaging, but still professional, efficient, and polite. Service was quick, attentive, and friendly on all accounts, and they as a team, managed to serve an entire full house of hungry & happy patrons during the entire Saturday night dinner rush. Fun place with a good staff. We opted for Izakaya-type, shared small plates to satisfy our hunger cravings without getting too full and weighed down on big portions of heavy, rich foods. Everything on the long & expansive menu looked great, but we mostly stuck with small appetizers to sample & savor. It was nice that there were plenty of lighter, fresh vegetarian options as neither of us were really in the mood for seafood, fried food, or big heavy entrees. We ordered the Kinda Tofu, Kyuri sliced fresh cucumber salad, and Kinoko butter-grilled mushroom hot platter and washed it down with some green grape Jinro soju. Everything was pretty good! Not overly fried, greasy, salty, or seasoned. Lightly cooked, delicately glazed, with just enough seasoning & oil/sauce to make it taste good, but not end up too complicated or messy. The taste really came through using these minimal cooking & seasoning techniques. The taste of the original vegetables & tofu came through perfectly, and were only complimented by their light hints of adding flavor. Portion sizes were ample for two people, and presentation was appetizing and organized. The bill for 3 apps + 1 bottle of Soju was less than $50, so it was a good value for the fun experience & good food. Wait times during the dinner rush are long, and there isn't really anywhere to sit or stand, so reservations are recommended. You can also enter and go straight to the 10-seat bar if there are openings, but we got a table for two after around a 20-30 minute wait. After that, everything moves pretty quickly, from ordering, getting food & drinks, to wrapping up and getting your check. Perfect system if you're trying to get to a concert, movie, or appointment with a specific start time. I really liked this place, not Kinda, not Sorta, but Definitely, or Absolutely! Kinda Izakaya will always be our destination to eat & hang out next time we come back to Berkeley, it is a true gem of a Japanese Izakaya/light meal fare right in the heart of downtown Berkeley. Chicken thigh skewers were also very good, though I would've liked a couple more pieces of green onion to balance it out. The chicken meatball was very tender, but the meat itself was extremely flavored.. probably overly seasoned. Other items were solid as well! Scallops were fresh, I liked the sauce it came in. The front doors are littered with adds and dirt. It looked a bit sketchy on the outside but we went inside anyway. Inside, the restaurant looks very pleasant. It has a comfortable and cozy look for a small 49 seat place. Mood music plays at a quiet level. There are several conversation starters for sure inside the restaurant like.. "What is that shrine with the green bananas on it for?" "Can you decipher the price of beer written on that chalkboard?" My favorite was "What is that treadmill doing in this restaurant?" We were seated and given menus. The waitress left and then came back after four or five minutes. I felt a little rushed to order as if the order taker assumed we had pre-prepped ourselves on their menu. We had to ask for more of a chance to look at the options. The two of us shared a bowl of Ramen, an order of California Rolls, a coke and later on we ordered Takoyaki-deep fried dough with I believe a piece of squid inside. Before the waitress left to give our first order to the chef, she said "Anything else?" I inferred she was suggesting our order was to small. Later I understood she might be warning me that that might be our last chance to order anything. It was hard for us to place that second order of Takoyaki. Once we were given our food, the waitress disappeared and never checked on us. To place another order, I had to keep the kitchen under surveillance, watching for someone to exit so we could jump up, run to the frond desk area and order. The food we did have was tasteful enough and the $41 seems fare. Negatives for Bansho. 1) The phones used by the front desk and in the kitchen are too loud, they ring for too long and destroy the ambience. Someone will one day invent a device that buzzes in your pocket instead of ringing loudly throughout the entire restaurant. Name it something catchy like "Cell Phone". 2) The Men's restroom was too dusty and the toilet seat was "spotty"- if you know what I mean. 3) Having someone check on you while you are eating and saying "Welcome In" when you get there and "Thank You For Your Business" when you leave would go a long way. I did see a sign that they are hiring so they might have been short staffed.

Good, solid, nothing spectacular or terrible. * Moro-Kyu (cucumbers, $10) - 2.5 stars, not bad, just seemed like regular cucumbers to me. * Nama-Yuba (tofu skin, $10) - 3.5 stars * Unibonara (creamy uni udon, $20) - 4.5 stars. Super tasty but super heavy! * Negima (thigh with leek, $12) - 3.5 stars * Enoki Bacon ($10) - 4 stars. Yummy but very oily. * Buta Bara (pork belly, $14) - 4 stars. Tasty but also really heavy.

When we arrived at Ippuku he popped up like a Waks-in-a-box......she "aaaieeeeeeed!" big success! Seated as night was approaching and ordered a 45mil sake carafe @$45. yummy Kokuryu. Will first list foods that won't get again....1. interesting but tiny teeny bowl tofu skins 2. tasteless watery egglant dish(worst thing). 3. and an ok but boring egg omelet. now for the winners: gyoza with a delicious filling encased in a delicate traslucent skin; 1/2 crispy skinned grilled mackeral (my fav!) grilled chik butt (a bit lite on salt..soy fixed it;) then to Joes objection I ordered smelt tempura... objection waived..we all loved it; wagu beef on a stick great (Joes fav); Scallion pancake quite good but which weirdly came toward the end of the meal & had to ask for it numerous times??? why Did it come so late.? anyway we finished with onigiri sesame crusty grilled rice ball and another in a delicious rich chicken broth.....asked our server for the check! wait a minute...something was amiss...missing items? when the bill arrived we were right! 3 grilled different chicken skewers that were missing in action were on the bill ....what? informed the staff ...the manager arrived & asked if we now wanted them...too late baby its too late.....the bill was corrected and almost $40 was deleted.... sooooo again the service here can leave much to be desired similar to missing items on our former visit. still many great dishes as well as its visually stunning interior & plus...ATTENTION! Women...your toilet seat is heated which Gio gushed about & adored! next time I'll have her photo the seat

Great spot for a quick, cheap, and delicious meal. You order a bowl of noodles, and then customize…read moreit with additional toppings. There's a self-serve tempura station where each piece is individually priced, so you have control over how little or much you want to spend. My first time here I ordered the size regular #10 and two vegetable tempura pieces, and the total was slightly under under or around $10. The next time I decided to splurge and added a third tempura, and the total was $13 something. Really good deal! I have a decent appetite and found the regular size bowl to be filling but not too filling. The noodles are perfectly chewy and the broth is flavorful. This place is definitely on par with other udon places in terms of taste. My second time here I came alone and I noticed quite a few people were also eating alone. For some reason this is a nice spot to have a meal by yourself. Maybe the quick service and the lowkey atmosphere helps. They have a lot of indoor seating, as well as outdoor seating that is elevated and sectioned away from the sidewalk. My source of anxiety here is having to carry the tray with your bowl to your table. I'm not the most coordinated, but it's been fine so far.

The dinning area is average on cleanliness but where the area you get utensils, there is huge stain of gyoza sauce all over the counter, which is disgusting. Several employees pass by, no one bother to clean up! The other problem with this visit is staff not stocking up ready to serve, we ordered 4 char siu udon, there were bo noodles bowls, paper cups or several items, the girl has to hot scramble to go fetch the bowls, paper cups to heat up the meat which was still cold, noodle bowls was lukewarm at best, she really made a mess all over the counter and had to ask for help to scope up 4 small bowls of rice which was also barely lukewarm. The jumbo kitchen katsu look over cooked and is actually overcooked and taste like chicken jerky. Maybe they have high turnover of staff and we also had to wait for staff to come over to cash register station. We also have to ask for green onion to be refill, which shouldn't need to, tempura bits were always stocked, why wasn't the green onion? Price was great with 30% discount but food quality, readiness and cleanliness isn't good, food was barely lukewarm, chicken was overcooked, lots of items were not restock during dinner hours. Unfortunately I can only give 2 stars, it would have been a 4 stars if food is serve hot and items well stocked and cleanliness. I hope they improve
