Fortunately for me, Cafe Kyoto was located right inside Plaza Hotel where I was staying -- and the Japanese chef happened to be standing by the lobby when a very hungry me walked in. I followed my nose into Cafe Kyoto, sat down, and was immediately handed a menu. Immediately, the Japanese Sliders caught my attention, being a meat eater. I got those, an order of Battera (boxed mackerel sushi), and a plate of Spicy Tuna Maki. (I know, i know -- but i was hungry!). The Japanese Sliders were cooked really well as is the case in most good Japanese places, but the special gravy was a tad too sweet for my liking. The Battera, on the other hand, was perfection. That was hands down the freshest mackerel i have ever sunk my teeth into, which made for really good sushi. The Spicy Tuna Maki, too, was exceptional -- so much so that I had both again, the very next day. While good, authentic Japanese cuisine is abundant in Manila, I am awfully glad I walked into Cafe Kyoto. Major plus points for Balanga City. PS. This time the visit was with my parents, my brother, my husband and me. We were served with delicious complimentary tofu with a great-tasting sauce. My brother ordered the aji tataki for us to start off and it's been a while since I've had this. Beautifully done and very tasty! My brother got the chirashi bowl. My husband and I shared the Gindara kaku bento - grilled cod fish, salad, salmon and tuna sashimi, tempura, miso soup with clams and mango ice cream. For dessert, fruits was the other option.
