I recently adopted a 9-month old dog and wanted to jump into training right away. I retained…read moresomeone who lived very close to me and had great reviews, but after a few sessions I realized our schedules were not compatible; I was not getting consistency and reliability from her. It's important for me to make progress with my dog, so I Googled alternate options and stumbled upon Alex's page. I called him on a Friday and he picked up the phone right away. We spoke for a while about my needs and he came out the following Tuesday for what was supposed to be a 2-hour visit. I fell in love with him immediately, he is not only so personable and likable on his own, but he really takes the time to LISTEN to what you need and work on those things right away. I had mentioned my priorities to my previous trainer, but I found that she was teaching my dog commands that didn't actually accomplish what I was after. In our first meeting, Alex worked on SO MANY of my priorities. He got my dog to go into her crate on command, taught her to "stay," showed me how to "walk with" my dog better on her leash, and (using a 30' leash outdoors) started working on recall with her. We were so immersed in what was going on that Alex started to go a little bit over our time, but he didn't want to stop because we were making such great progress. I told him if he wanted to give me a third hour right then and there that I was prepared to pay for it, and he did!! I learned a lot of things from Alex myself during our first meeting, like how to employ the use of "deltas" (which my old trainer never once mentioned) and how non-verbal cues are arguably more important than verbal ones. Again, my old trainer actually discouraged me from using hand motions, but once incorporating them into my routine I noticed that my dog was much more compliant than she had been. Another positive difference between my old trainer and Alex is he really takes the time to teach you why he's doing what he's doing, and encourages you to participate. My old trainer just taught my dog a command and had me replicate/practice when she left. Alex really makes you feel like you are a part of the teaching process. After our private session Alex recommended some "Small Group Therapy" for my pup. He came at noon on a Thursday to pick up my dog and she proceeded to go on a several-hour outing with his two chihuahuas and a dog he was fostering. The entire time he was out with her he was recording and sharing videos on an iCloud album. It was INCREDIBLE to not only see everything that was happening, but to hear him narrate why he was doing the things he was doing. I could not get enough of his videos and felt like I was there during the session. On top of Alex's excellent communication, punctuality, reliability, friendliness, competency, and effectiveness, his rates are OUTRAGEOUS in the BEST way! I truly believe he is under-charging for his services. I can get three hours with Alex for less than I paid for one hour with my prior trainer, and I feel much better about the work that is done during that timeframe. I adore Alex, and most importantly, what he is doing works. He really gets into the mind of your dog, and has such a wonderful way of connecting with them and their needs. I am elated to keep our work going - my pup has lots more Small Group Therapy outings in her future and it's wonderful that I have the option to use him one-on-one to teach her even more commands in the house. One day I hope to move on from essential commands to more fun ones, like "roll over" or "go get X toy."

I used to shop here more frequently, but they stopped carrying my dogs'…read morefood in this store, and then I switched to a different grain free brand exclusive to Tractor Supply, so I've had fewer reasons to go. However, my recent visit was a lifesaver (see below) and they get 5 stars for that alone! This is a smaller version of Petco, not exactly a box sized store. They have basics, and serve the community well that way. They DO have aquarium supplies, and they DO have grooming, which is a big plus for locals! If you've ever tried to take a fish home in the frigid winter air, or the hot summer sun, you know how stressful it can be on the fish, and on you worrying about its welfare. Prior to this Petco's existence, the nearest one was Devon, by the Barnes & Noble, which was almost double the distance for me. A few years ago, I was happy to stock my fishtank with neons and a plecko from this store. Yes, that's as exciting as my tank gets, because it's all I can keep alive. My Petco fishies lived as long as can be expected, and I got helpful advice for my plecko, which was valuable because I'd gotten really bad advice at the former Petco location. My fishtank is currently abandoned, but I hope to resurrect it someday for my son to enjoy, and I will head straight to this store to stock it. I have also gotten relatively good deals on antlers here. Antlers and water buffalo horns are usually pretty pricey, but I shopped the heck out of these things online and in stores, and as of the last time I bought some (a couple years ago because I buy several and my dogs hide them and go back to them in this odd dog game they play), but as of my last purchase, this Petco had the best deal around. Most recently, I was tasked with having to get my female dog's anal glands expressed! She is on Prozac and this has somehow made her need expression every so often. It is SO unpleasant when your dog goes through this, and likewise, it is SO helpful to have a nearby grooming salon where I can DEAL with it! Not just that, but it is only $10 for this service, and it's pretty much just drop-in, and 5 minutes, and out the door! Last time I took her to the vet it was like $40, plus a long wait, so heck, this is WONDERFUL! They do ask that you show proof of rabies vaccs, which is standard, and safe. So I am so grateful and happy to have this Petco around, and I hope anyone using them for expression remembers to tip well!!!!!

My partner, kids and I called at 4:48 saying we are running a few min behind. The store said we have a 10 min grace window. We arrived 4:54 within the window. The grooming coordinator Devika was very rude and disappointed that we made it, and refused anyway saying she was busy - even though she said she saw us pull in on time. She had been trying to push a reschedule right from the beginning and shoved it onto us. We spoke to Store manager Sarah who seemed to sympathize - she spoke to the grooming coordinator Devika for 5 min and she returned saying that the issue is we are very busy so we can't take your dog. I was astounded - we followed the instruction made it through rush hour traffic and still made it and were being made a mockery of. We are a family, I took time off work, made it through rush hour on a Friday to be at the store - to be treated with a degree of nonchalance and astounding indifference to customer and situation that had me gobsmacked- I get the harried groomer, but the manager using being busy as an excuse is stunning!! I kept asking her what did I do wrong, which she could not answer. There is something very wrong with this- there is absolutely no fear of accountability which may be a much larger problem that could use leadership attention. I could also use some redress for the way my wife and I were treated. I don't usually use yelp for anything but food but I'm outraged enough that I I feel you should hear of this incident. We have reached out to many levels of their management as well so there is better chance of someone getting back. Looking at other ratings of the store in recent times we are not alone in this. For the record, Sarah refused to be on audio or camera recording in her position, as per Petco policy!

Dawgue is a 5-month-old mixed breed female puppy with a ton of energy and difficult to control. She is tipping the scale at 50 pounds already. Taylor taught me how to greatly improve Dawgue's response to the command "come" to me in about 15 minutes. I learned a lot about the psychology of dog and what motivates them to respond to my commands. After working with Taylor, I saw a great improvement in Dawgue's response to me in our first walk outside, she was much better behaved and is learning to come to me when told to do so. There is much to be learned by me and more training for Dawgue to help me reach my goal of having her walk beside me without a leash and not be distracted by other dogs, people and other critters etc. I am very encouraged that by working with Taylor and heeding his advice Dawgue and I will accomplish this goal.
