Beautiful location and awesome customer service!! I cannot talk highly enough about the way staff treated us on our trip there. In our room we found some cleanliness issues, but when I approached the front desk about it they were nothing but accommodating and apologetic about it. Not only did we get it immediately resolved along with a few comped drinks, but the head of housekeeping called twice to check on us and sent a platter of fruit, water, and candies to our room. The hotel has everything you would need for it not being an all exclusive hotel; swim up bar, nice pool, restaurants, bar right on the beach. My only negative comment about it is the price of the food and drinks, however it is somewhat expected for a place of that level. I would definitely recommend this for families and couples because it has something for everyone. If you bring your kids there's even a playground next to the pool. Wonderful experience all around. **Tip on getting there from the San Juan airport. there is no hotel shuttle, but do not take the airport taxis, they will charge you $16 for a five minute ride. First, I am going to break down how many stars each part of the hotel gets. Then I will explain why. The Pool: 5 stars The Concierge: 1 star Staff (except front desk): 4 stars Front Desk: 2 stars Room Service: 1 star Casino: 1 star Room: 4 stars View: 1 star Beach: 3 stars Prices: 0 stars (expensive) Average: 2.2 stars but I will round it off to 3 because the pool was AMAZING! Upon arrival to our destination, I noticed the hotel on the outside a bit "tired". Then again, its in the sun all day so that could be one of the reasons for it looking dull. I didn't get disappointed by that though. Once we reached the entrance area of the hotel, staff enthusiastically opened the doors for us and welcomed us, it was nice and charming. We did arrive early before check in time and I had an idea that our room may not be ready but that didn't disappoint us. We went to the front desk to only be greeted by a disgruntled staff member. She wasn't happy and it felt as if she was doing us a favor by checking us in. She told us our room wasn't ready (I wasn't surprised) , which I was fine with and she specifically told us and guaranteed us that she will call us once our room is ready... if it is before 4pm. I was absolutely fine with that! We headed over to the concierge/tour desk to ask for directions to Old San Juan and the lady sitting behind the desk was nothing but rude. She didn't greet us with a smile nor did she want to give us her attention. She told us how to get to San Juan and gave us a pamphlet with tours and activities which were insanely overpriced and expensive. For instance, the Bacardi distillery tour was $62 (we didn't buy it) but on our way to Old San Juan on the bus (which is 75 cents) we found an advertisement for the distillery having a no entrance fee (meaning free) and doing as we please in there without a tour guide. BEWARE OF HOTELS LEECHING OFF YOUR POCKETS! The lady tried to sell us the tour for Old San Juan but I refused it.We finally got the directions to Old San Juan without any other additional significant information. Then again, why would a hotel want to give information about the free stuff that you can do in Old San Juan, right? Anyway, we spent four hours in San Juan and then we decided to get back to the hotel EVEN THOUGH WE DID NOT GET A PHONE CALL. NO PHONE CALL AT ALL FROM THE HOTEL. We head to the front desk and there was another lady at the front desk. We gave her our names and she told us "Oh, I never had a chance to call you." I would have believed her if she didn't try to laugh under her breathe. I didn't let this ruin my trip. When we arrived to our room, it was nothing special but at the same time, it was nice and big. The bathroom was not all how it was described online but it was okay. The toilet flooded here and there as well as the sink. The balcony is accessible, which was nice letting the breeze into the room. We spent a lot of time outside of the room but when we stayed in the room, the bed was comfortable as well as the couch. The pool is amazing. It has a hot tub, a swim up bar, a small cave like pool that you can sit in with mini waterfalls on the outside which fall into the pool. At night, the pool is gorgeous and its accessible 24/7 only for hotel guests. The food they serve at one of the bars is AMAZING. You MUST have the garlic shrimp skewers and the drinks are insanely expensive but very good. At one of the bars (more towards the backside entrance of the hotel, where the swimup bar is), the bartenders aren't all that friendly. They always seem angry. Are they getting whipped or something back there?! pffft! The guy who gives the beach towels and the wrist bracelet for the "resort", is friendly and nice. Speaking of staff, the cleaning ladies do not speak English but when they do understand something, they smile and thank you! Very pleasant. The beach was okay. Its not the resorts fault for the beach having seaweed and the water not being clear but they can at least clean/organize the beach property. They could do better. The staff that does tend to the beach (waitress) tend to forget drinks. They forgot my drinks (thankfully I didnt pay them) as well as others. Beach umbrellas you have to rent, which I find ridiculous. We ordered room service one night and it wasn't the greatest. As a matter of fact, it was VERY EXPENSIVE and the food arrived warm. The person who brought us the food didnt even have change on him but he was kind enough to go get change. The appetizer platter that had the variations, sucked. The shrimp was ok and the Mofogu wasn't the best. Then again, I could have been spoiled from the restaurant where I first had it. The cake was DELICIOUS! The casino looked very run down and it reminded me of Atlantic City before some of the casinos went under renovation. I expected something big but it wasn't big at all. It was smoke filled and the dealers looked miserable. What was funny is the poker dealer, he looked scared. I couldn't help but chuckle. read more

We booked our stay through Travelocity, HUGE mistake. There was no mention of the MAJOR renovations that the hotel was going through on their website and we were not informed by the hotel in advance. After arriving early in Puerto Rico, the hotel was unable to accommodate our early check in. We waited for 4 hours before a room was 'ready', and that was not the room we booked. We booked a king bed and received a room with 2 double beds. This room also happened to be right next to where construction was going on and the noise completely drowned out the peace and relaxation we were looking for on vacation. The front desk insisted they were booked solid and had no other rooms available. I contacted Travelocity, fully ready to check in to somewhere else. (to make a long story short) I finally found myself on a 3 way phone call with Travelocity and the hotel manager named Edgar. Edgar at first tried to assure us there would no construction over the weekend (a blatant lie, as I was there over the weekend and there was construction), but did offer to change our room. He said if we did not like the new room he would refund us our money. He showed us to their VIP rooms and said we would hear no noise from that room. The room was nice but not what I would consider VIP status. I left the decision up to my wife as it was her birthday trip. We took the room and had a great weekend in PR. If not for Edgar, I would have given this place 1 star. He was the only one who seemed concerned that guests were not having a good time. He was polite and accommodating. The baggage attendants were also very courteous. Most of the people at the desk were a bit rude. The casino is lame (enough said). The pool was amazing and the beach a fantastic. The hotel was very clean. My review is mostly based off of this bad experience. I am sure the construction will make the hotel beautiful but unless I ever go back, it will remain 2 stars. We stayed here for two days before a cruise and were pleasantly surprised as the room was only $125/night. After taxes, self-parking for $20/day and two bar visits (~$20 each visit) we paid about $415. Breakfast was included with above average buffet including American breakfast fare as well as some local flavors. Staff was extremely friendly from the front desk to the bellman to the waiter. We had access to the lounge with my IHG status and were surprised to find a range of options available 24 hours a day including bottled water (ask), fresh ground coffee drinks, fruit, cookies, biscotti, etc. During happy hour we had beers (Modello light) and the kids managed to fill up enough where they ended up sharing dinner. The pools were beautiful and the beach area in front of the hotel was well maintained. The gift shop also offered a wide range of items, including local crafts. Overall we were very pleased with our visit to the point where the hotel could be the focal point of a future vacation, rather than just a place to stay before our cruise. read more

The Intercontinental was nice. I think that making hotel guests pay for valet is ludicrous. Especially making them pay $22 a day!! One of the most interesting parts of the hotel is that the same drink is a different price in each restaurant you go to! My $11 glass of champagne at the pool became $18 in the hotel lobby bar!!! The pool area is ok, swim up bar is fantastic. They have a great stretch of beach minus the nasty seaweed you have to get through to get in the water. The cheap Caesar salad they make at the pool/beach bar in 5 minutes is different (and a lot better) than the one the beach waiters take an hour to serve. I advise against using the beach waiters because they s-l-o-w. The IC is kind of lacking in entertainment so we spent most of our time next door at the El San Juan. read more

Often times when I see a one star review for a hotel it pertains to an isolated event - a specific experience with the service, the room - and I think as long as I don't have that same issue, the hotel could be great. While there were specific events that resulted in the one star rating I am giving for Intercontinental, the biggest overall deficiency of this hotel lies with the service. And that's a big issue in the world of hospitality. As I have already shared with two managers at the property, the service at this hotel is unacceptable. I have experienced better service at budget hotels in worse parts of the world. I'll start with the pros of this hotel. It's on the beach and many of the hotels in San Juan are not on the beach. The pool and Jacuzzi facilities are nice, as is the lobby. However, there is a very big disconnect between the appearance of the lobby and what's reality for the rooms. The rooms are worn and in dire need of renovation. This is a three star property at best with one star customer service. The exception to the service being the gentleman at the front of the hotel opening doors - they are kind and consistently pleasant. The women, all of them, working the front desk need to go back to hospitality 101 training. The overall attitude, as I shared with the managers, is they simply do not care. And this has been acknowledged with many other reviewers of this hotel. We attempted to check in a little early after a very long flight. There were no rooms available but we were to be called on the phone as soon as a room became available. Never received a call so we went back an hour after check in time. Room was disappointingly small and certainly not worth the rate we paid for our two night stay. On our second evening, I attempted to take a shower at 10:00 pm and the water was cold. I called down to the front desk and was told they would "look into it" and get back to me. An hour passes and I don't receive a call. I call back down and the front desk tells me there's nothing wrong with the hot water heater. Ok, there's nothing wrong with it. But my water is still cold. I'm told again they would look into it and get back to me. Another hour passes and I decide to go downstairs and speak with them in person. I stand in line for 20 minutes. Gal at the front desk is rude and tells me again there's nothing wrong with the water heater. It's midnight and I'm tired and irate. I speak with the manager and he tells me he's sending an engineer up to my room. He also tells me that he'll deduct our extra person fee for the inconvenience (this is after I insisted on some kind of compensation for the ridiculousness). Fortunately, the water is hot by the time I make it back up to my room. An engineer never comes by. The next morning I get the printout for the bill and the extra person fee is still on my bill. I call down to the front desk and am told that all of the managers are in a meeting and when I check out I need to speak with a manager. Again. And maybe I can wait another 20 minutes. By this point I've had enough of this pathetic hotel. I do speak with another manager at check out and she removes the fee and assures me it's "more than fair" for my experience. Absolutely not. I give her the opportunity to reconcile the horrific experience we have had at the hotel and am told repeatedly that there's nothing she can do. What Intercontinental does not understand is that they are in an incredibly competitive business and we (travelers) have many, many choices. They clearly don't give a hoot about ensuring customer satisfaction. We paid a premium for this hotel and they could not deliver on the bare basics. The manager gave me her card and told me to get in touch with her the next time we decide to stay there and she'll make sure we're taken care of. A room with hot water? Friendly, professional customer service from the front desk? Prompt attention with serious issues? We would be fools to return. I look forward to the cut and paste response that the PR firm for Intercontinental will post in response to this. Stay somewhere else folks, there are better options at better prices. read more

Just a terrible experience , was stuck there when La Concha transferred me ... my room was old and disgusting , there was an open beer in the fridge and SHIT in the toilet ..... furthermore La Concha offered is free parking and breakfast for the inconvenience, I was charged for both , was finally credited for the parking and still disputing the breakfast , horrible , stay away , far away..... also , La Concha reservation was for a suite with a resort and partial ocean view , IC was so nice they gave me a room with a view of the street read more

Just got back from an amazing stay at the intercontinental! Great customer service we arrived early around 11AM and luckily our room was ready for us! The only disappointment was finding that there was still some trash left behind in our room... On the floor and the house keeper that came to clean on our 4 days stays still didnt notice the trash on the floor. Besides that everything was great! read more

Bed's are very comfortable, but it is an older hotel. We had some issues with the first room and they eventually fixed the problems. We did end up with a beautiful view, but this part of town has either very expensive food choices or fast food. I'd probably go with a different choice if we come back. read more

This hotel was ok but no real night life I think if I go to pr again that I would stay next door at the el San Juan casino and hotel we ended up at that hotel like every day. Only thing I like about the intercontinental hotel is the pool area and swim up bar. So we returned here for our 12th wedding anniversary. We got engaged here. Things have changed quite a bit. The neighborhood has gone residential and the street dwellers are a bit shady. The hotel is still pretty nice, but the rooms and grounds are starting to get a bit dated. Time for a makeover. For the entire 7 days that we stayed here only 2 of the 3 elevators were working and considering multiple conventions were under way, there were ridiculously long waits for an elevator. Seems crazy that an elevator couldn't be fixed sooner. Also, the customers at this hotel have changed over the years. This time we found some of the customers to be loud and rude. One big plus, was the Italian restaurant on the lower level. It was delicious and the service was very good and pretty timely. Unfortunately. We won't be returning to this hotel or this part of San Juan, ever again. read more

My bf and I checked in today and were told that room with ocean view will be ready at 4pm. We called several times and they were not ready. It's been past 4pm and the room wasn't ready. Overall a nice stay. I traveled with my fiance over Labor Day. My only 2 negatives are: the room was a bit outdated (which I assume will be remedied after renovations are complete) and the bathroom was never cleaned properly, even upon arrival. The Staff was exceptional and very friendly throughout our stay. Our room was not ready when we checked in [even though it was 4:45), but at least we were each given a voucher for a free poolside cocktail while we waited. Pool area is very nice, as is the beach (where we spent the majority of our time). Overall the grounds are nice. However, having stayed at the Ritz Carlton on my previous trip to Puerto Rico, I realized the Intercontinental has plenty of room for improvement. read more

You are used to the Intercontinental brand anywhere else in the world, you will be disappointed with this resort. First of all, the front desk staff is terrible. Arrogant and rude are the two words that immediately come to mind. They had long check in lines and the way spoke to people was terrible. It took 30 minutes to check in. The room is very average, nothing special. The flat screen tv would have been nice if it had a clear picture. The bathroom is small. Frankly, I have had better rooms at Best Western. The restaurant is way overpriced for breakfast, $30 with tax. Not worth it. However, dinner at the bar was reasonable. There were some good things: - close to the aiport - very nice pool area - decent beach frontage. All in all, I would certainly not recommend this resort for a vacation. While the servers in the restaurant were friendly, every other worker in the hotel is in serious need of customer service training. Lastly, they are doing major construction. Don't expect to get any rest in your room during the day. read more

The pool area is excellent with two great bars (one swim-up, one beachside) I have no complaints except that I didn't stay longer! Great for a quick NYC getaway. Seeing the other reviews, we didn't have the same experience with the service. Everyone was very nice and overly helpful. We checked in right away (arrived mid-day) and easy checking out too. Our room was on the 11th Fl so did notice some of the elevator delays but wasn't unbearable at all. The room did feel somewhat dated but was clean and nicely furnished. The bathroom needs updating. That would get 2.5-3 starts. Clean definitely but on the small side and could use freshening up (new curtain rings if they are reading this! minor thing but makes a difference). And then of course the pool and beach location - also great (well, as nice a beach for San Juan - at least what I've seen). Just note service - we had to flag interest for drinks/food in our chairs but once they knew, the server checked in frequently. read more

Service has been impeccable since day one. Jose specifically is amazing and the beach drink service is speedy and convenient. Watching people jet ski and kite surf all day has been very entertaining. There is no shortage of things to do here and at the end of the day we retire to a nice clean room. Don't even get me started on the drinks and restaurant options! I'm probably going to gain 10lbs staying here but I'm not even mad :-) if you're feeling up to stuffing your face in the morning, Trattoria has a great breakfast buffet and I've been full all day ever since. read more

The hotel is very pretty and has direct access to the beach. The beach is not crystal clear and pretty but still nice to sit and listen to the waves. The hotel knew we were celebrating our honeymoon and sent up a surprise bottle of champagne with chocolate strawberries. One thing that did upset me right at check in was that they neglected to tell me about the 100+ daily incidental fee which added up to 400+ dollars. What was upsetting was that I had called several times inquire about questions, they never mentioned this. They put almost 500.00 hold on my credit card that I wasn't counting on. Nice restaurants inside the hotel it quite pricey. We opted to eat locally instead and save tons of money. The room inside was nice and the beds were SUPER comfy. Staff is very courteous and warming. Checked in here at around 1 am on Tuesday morning, looking forward to our five night stay. Just before getting into bed I happened to walk to the window and was shocked to find the carpet was very wet, all along the window and about 18 inches out from it. As it was raining heavily I figured there must be a leak through the window, but on walking across to the other end of the room to the bathroom I found another long strip of very wet carpet. The room also smelled damp and musty so I assume this had been an ongoing problem. Given the very late hour and our early start the next morning we decided to request a room change the next morning. During the night we didn't get much sleep though since the toilet seemed to be flushing itself every 10 - 15 minutes which was very noisy and quite weird! Around 8 am the next day I went to the front desk to report the issue with the wet carpet in our room and was told their computer system was down so they were doing everything manually, so they couldn't assign me a new room until the afternoon. I went out to the pool for a few hours and because of their computer issues they couldn't charge anything to the room and wanted cash or credit card. Since I needed to return to the room to get cash, I went over to the market across the street and picked up water and sodas at a fraction of the hotel cost. I returned to the front desk around lunch time to be told they would almost certainly find me another ocean view room but they didn't know the number yet so I must come back around 2 - 4 pm. Came back again just before 4 pm only to be told that they couldn't guarantee switching me to another ocean view room, nor any other room right now since they were still doing everything manually and had to rely on housekeeping staff to let them know when rooms were ready. When I asked what time they would be able to let me know, they said 'we don't know'. By this stage it was clear they were not going to manage to change my room and so I told them I was probably going to check out and go to another hotel - to which they responded that I just need to let them know. A couple of hours later I came back to the desk where there was a huge line of people trying to check in. I explained I was checking out and a manager was brought to the desk and simply said she was sorry I felt that way. In the absence of a new room, or a time when I would receive a new room, I told her I didn't feel I had any choice but to leave. When I asked to settle my bill and check out she said she couldn't check me out because of their computer system still being down! I had to write my information on a 'sign out' sheet and they promised to email a bill when their system is back up and running. The manager said what a terrible day they had had, and while I understand they faced some difficult technical issues, I feel that it is not reasonable to wait more than 8 hours for a room change, especially when the carpet is soaking wet - and then to find they still couldn't accommodate me. We checked out and moved straight to the Ritz Carlton down the street - friendly check in staff, great concierge, quiet and comfortable room, very clean (and no wet carpet either!). The rate is comparable so I am glad we only spent one night at the Intercontinental. Several weeks prior to checking into the Intercontinental, based on reviews I had read here, I called the hotel direct to ask if construction work was still ongoing. I was assured they had completed all work, so went ahead with the booking. On my one day there it was very noisy by the pool with all kinds of hammering and drilling going on behind large black plastic screens. This has to be one of the worst ever hotel experiences I have had - I was amazed by the very poor service and seeming lack of concern to try to keep a customer. We will definitely not be returning here. read more

This hotel is beautiful, inside and out, this is our second time staying there and can't wait to go back. It is walking distance from good restaurants, chilis and Walgreens. I was a little disappointed with restroom and there was not much you can do in hotel in the evening. But they have great Steakhouse, Outdoors Pool and Bar. In my view, not worth the money. Pool is nice, beach is nice, but I've had better rooms in much cheaper hotels. Not even a makeup mirror. Small bathroom. Shower head is stuck in one position. My room needs to be dusted. I asked for a room change and they told me they would contact me at 4 pm but they never did. They told me I requested a city view--I guess that's the default view. I have a lovely view of the overhang over the driveway. There is a sliding door to a small balcony but no chair out there to view the "city." I was expecting more. Extremely disappointed. read more

Stayed at this place for a week on our first trip to Puerto Rico and I didn't have one complaint. The hotel grounds, from the front area to the pool and beach are kept in very good condition. The staff is helpful, always willing to listen and security is pretty tight so there was no funny business going on anywhere. They had 24/7 security doing patrols on the ground which was very important to us. The rooms were very clean and we didn't have any issues with the air conditioning or noise. The view from the higher floors of the beach area was amazing. The pool area was great with lots of areas to lounge in and everything was clean. This particular hotel is situated right in the middle of the main road, close to all sorts of restaurants and lounges. Oh yea, the airport is within viewing distance and only a 5 min trip by car! The service level stood out. The staff was very accommodating. Went out of their way to deliver what you ask for. Concierge gave accurate recommendations and made our stay memorable. Drinks were good. Costly but worth it. Room service is prompt and orderly but menu items are hit or miss. Some items are good and others are not good. I don't recommend the room service breakfast. The drink prices vary. Inside the lounge the prices are $28 for two drinks. Outside in the report grounds the drinks are a little cheaper. On the beach, the drinks are not that good but cheaper. However, the servers are professional and friendly. The couch in the room was a tad bit dated, cushions need replaced. Bed was soft, sheets clean and the housekeepers cleaned with some good smelling cleaner. We stay four nights and had a very good experience. read more
