After moving here in 2004, my son (5 at the time) and I tried several barbers in the area. This was after he decided he didn't want to get his hair cut by women in salons any more - not manly enough. He was varying degrees of dissatisfied every time. We finally found Instyle after a couple of years just by accident one day when we were wandering around the Plaza (it's not far from our house). We got lucky and ended up in Hasan's chair. We both started telling him what we envisioned for the haircut and he immediately sized up the situation for the power struggle it was. He told me with a twinkle in his eye & a wink (neither of which my son saw) that after all it was his hair and he should be allowed to decide how he wanted it to look. He then proceeded to have a conversation with my son about his haircut in which he skillfully guided him away from his extreme unfortunate desires and into a choice which he thought was all his but which Hasan had heavily influenced. He gave him a haircut which he loved, which looked cool to him and within acceptable parameters to me (and it looked great). My son is 14 now & if he goes there & it turns out to be Hasan's day off he just comes back. He tried someone else once & wasn't happy. He agrees with the other reviewers about the female cutters (sorry). My uncle was a barber & hairstylist (as was his wife) so I also have a little familiarity with the business. Hasan is an artist with the scissors. He only uses a the buzzer when necessary, otherwise he takes the time needed for a great scissor cut. He's nice, funny, charming in a good way, great with kids (if my son is a good test case & trust me, he is), super professional, can chat if you want (fun and easy to talk to) but won't make you if you don't. He could easily charge twice the price but it's $18. The other review that said the wait can be long, but it's worth building the time needed into your schedule. They used to say they closed at 8 but people would keep coming in til right about 8 so they would end up not getting out of there til 9 or even later, so now the sign says 7:30 and they'll take you up to then. Hair cutting is a physically demanding job - you're raising your arms & using your arm muscles and hand muscles all day & you're on your feet all day. Have some consideration & get there early enough so you don't make them extend their day even longer (like that guy who groused about being turned away 20 minutes before closing time - he probably didn't even notice closing time is now 7:30 because of people like him). We've done that - stopped in, saw a long line, went away & came back. The difference is we TALKED TO HASAN, and asked him when to come back. Jeez, Clint, how hard is that to figure out? Bottom line is my son will let his hair grow to his butt before he lets anyone else cut it & I enthusiastically second his opinion. 4 thumbs WAY up!!
**(But do us all a favor and get there by 7:15, and talk to Hasan [or your preferred barber] before you walk away & come back at whatever time you think is a good idea. It's just rude to crowd into a business like that right before closing.) read more
