Finding the right driving school for your child can be extremely stressful - both for the parent and child alike. I know my son was very nervous for it. After his initial driving school class, I could see his knowledge and confidence improved greatly. With each driving lesson, he grew more and more proficient and confident and I could tell that using the Institute for Drivers Safety school was the best move we could have made. Heard great things about this driving school from a friend whose two daughters have gone through their course. We enrolled our son last Monday and chose the $650 "Behind the Wheel" option. We followed the instructions that were emailed to us and called the next day to schedule his first class. We left a voicemail expecting to hear back at least by the next day, it's been a week and since then we've left multiple voicemails and sent an email as well asking to be contacted so we can schedule. As a business owner myself I can't imagine receiving a customer's $650 order, then going completely dark. Even if they are booked out a month, which is what we anticipate, to accept an order and payment but not provide an ounce of communication after a week is extremely unprofessional. We'll be disputing the charge and finding another driving school that deserves the business. Side note- what's sad about this experience is since our son is paying for his auto insurance, he also paid half the cost of the driving school course. This is his investment in himself to be the best driver he can and to save a bit on his monthly insurance. He was so excited to put his card info in and his contact number and took this as an opportunity to be independent in this experience and now he just feels completely scammed. We had the best experience with IDS. My son took lessons with Mr. Montgomery and Mr. DeGrazia and had his exam with Mr. Love. He was especially fond of Mr. Love! All great instructors and a great program. They picked him up and dropped him off at home. He drove all over the valley, through the airport and on various freeways. Phil, David, Ralph, and Dan were all excellent with our daughter. She felt she learned a lot from them even though we did the lessons towards the end of her permit period. My daughter just finished the driving and in class instruction and has her drivers license! Her driver was Phill and he was fantastic. He showed up for her lessons early, they finished on time. He spoke to us after about what she needed to work in and after driving with Phil, her confidence increases in leaps and bounds. The front office schedule was great too. If you need to cancel and reschedule, she would bend over backwards searching for a new time or recommend when to call back if that schedule wasn't available yet. I wish I could ree we her name! The process and instructors here were great! They take them on several drives, picking up and dropping off where you need them to. My son really liked most of his instructors and easily got his license in the end. The only negative I had was I had to schedule the drives out pretty far apart, so he ended up waiting a month before he got his license. I signed my daughter up for this school and was told that they do accommodate my area of town. I took her to the classroom portion and when I went to schedule the drives, I was told they don't really have an instructor for my part of town. I've been attempting to get a full refund but "she" (not sure her name - the lady who answers the phone only refers to her as "she") is not returning my calls. Renee (who answers the phone) told me I won't get a full refund. However, I would never have signed my daughter up and taken her to the class if I had been given correct information. There is a total lack of communication and I only signed her up under false pretenses. I've now had to sign her up and pay full price at another school so she can get her drives in and get her license. Extremely disappointed in the lack of professional business practice. read more

Can't say enough good things about this driving program. All of the drivers are knowledgeable, kind, patient, and deal well with kids who have anxiety over learning to drive. Our son just passed the drivers test today and he is a much better driver after having gone through their program!! It's easy to schedule, it's reasonably priced, and they have a very tight process in place which makes the whole thing pretty darn easy. The package we chose included the drivers test at the end of the final lesson so no standing in line at the DMV or stressing out about enduring a test with an instructor they don't know. At this point we have a waiver that's good for one year and when we are ready to insure him, we take that waiver down to the DMV, get his picture snapped and we're done. Smooth sailing! read more

I have been driving with my daughter here and there for a little bit before I signed her up for the class as I figured she wasn't getting everything she needed from me. The good: She just finished her lessons and passed the final test. I wanted to give a shout out to instructors David and JayJay who helped her tremendously not only to learn to drive cautiously but to build up her confidence level as well. They're a great addition to this company. The bad: one of her instructors (Mario) had a negative impact on her and needless to say set her back. My daughter doesn't cry easily and he managed to make her cry. He is no longer with the company which is a good thing! Definitely not fit to be an instructor. Jan (owner) was receptive to work out the situation with us once I notified her of the issue. My advise would be is to ask what the instructor is like personality-wise when one gets assigned to your kid so you know if it'll fit well or not. I can't say for the rest of the instructors but hopefully they're like the two my daughter had and none like that other guy. I would still recommend this company as overall my daughter got what I signed her up for. read more

This program is excellent for new drivers! I myself having little to no driving experience needed a lot of practice. Just like any school I think a lot of responsibility falls to the teachers. Good instructors take time to get to know you, how to talk to you, are accommodating, enthusiastic, patient, and consistent. All qualities Darryl Alexander did not fail to bring, along with his best for every session and in doing so brought the best out of me. From the outset he was consistent and reassuring. He provided constant encouragement, practical tips, thorough explanations, and made the sessions a lot easier and relaxing. The fact that he never yells is super appreciated! You get out of it what you put in and you get the sense that the people there really care about you as a person as well as your success in all things wether it's in the car or in life. I had an amazing experience with the institute for drivers safety. Darryl Alexander was my instructor, and he was incredible and improved my skills drastically in only two lessons. The instructors here are funny and will chat to you and calm your nerves, they basically treat you like family. They make a stressful situation an enjoyable one. The environment of this company is that they highly value safety, but they are also laid back and want you to feel relaxed. I've had instructors in the past that made me feel like a bad driver, but these instructors are SO SO encouraging and they really lifted my confidence levels. I truly believe that I wouldn't have passed my driving test if I didn't come here. However, you need to book your lessons months in advance because this school is so sought-after, but it is very worth it. Prices are reasonable too. I have never, EVER been treated so horribly in my life by the lady that called me back. My daughter got COVID 10 days prior to her drive. She was supposed to be fine and out of quarantine but we did a home test the day of the drive and she was still positive. This lady literally yelled at me about it. Didn't want to refund the $250 I just paid for her last 2 drives. Like I have never had somebody yell at me and accuse me of this being my fault. She was literally yelling at me. It's not MY fault she is still testing positive after 10 days. I was trying to do the responsible thing. PLEASE pick a different school. They are cheaper and have better staff. Also, on her last drive, somebody had called and offered her, her very first job. She was really excited. The instructor literally told her to not feel special cause they just need bodies. DO NOT USE THIS SCHOOL!!!!! In this current environment, businesses need to be able to adapt and be flexible to help current and potential customers. This place clearly lacks these skills and will fail if they don't learn and prioritize the customer experience. Empathy and flexibility would go a long way. Great example of what not to do. I did not ask the answering service if she could still go. I called to cancel. The owner is trying to cover her a$$ with her response. I told her with how rude she is being I'm going to leave a bad review and she said "good! Go ahead!" BTW, Since having this lovely conversation with this lovely business owner, I did find out you can test positive for 60 days and can go out after 10. So at the end of the day, she could have gone. Life's too short to fight with business owners now isn't it? read more

I spent two years after high school begging my parents to let me get my license. After months of creepy Uber drivers, my mother screaming in the passenger seat, and two expired permits. They finally caved in and had me sign up for this institute. I was worried at first I wouldn't do well due to my mother's reactions but later realized she's just crazy. (Love you mom!) To my point, I spent hours with professional and attentive trainers who took the time to ensure that every choice I made on the road and every instinct a driver should posses was perfect. One six hour class, and four drives later I finally completed one of the greatest accomplishments of my life, I received my license! If you plan to enroll your child please understand you also have to put work into their driving skills in between drives and they also must pay attention to information/instructions from the trainers to ensure they succeed in their defensive driving skills. And of course I could not have done any of this without Ray B., Darryl A., and Larry M. Every time I look at my keys I will remember this school, the AWESOME trainers, and every single tip and trick of the road. This is the 2nd time we have used the Institute for Drivers Safety and we couldn't be more pleased! Both our girls loved the classroom experience, even though it was a long 6 hours. They passed their permit test right after where as most kids that did not take the classroom part failed at least the 1st and/or their second/third time. The driving portion (we did 2, 3 hour sessions for each) was also enjoyable and it gave them great confidence on the road. The instructors are past police officers, love kids and do everything to make it enjoyable. They truly do it to bring safety to our young teens on the road. I also want to say that Dianna at the front desk is awesome. We had an issue with my daughter being sick and so we were hoping to switch times with someone else. She did everything in her power to help us out. She made phone calls and was able to find a switch without a penalty. Not often do I find a company that is so accommodating. This school was recommended to me by several friends, I was impressed by how long the school has been in the valley and the expertise of the instructors. When I brought my son to the classroom I paid with my credit card and his instructor was a current Mesa police officer that explained the process of how to get the permit and how to schedule drives very thoroughly. My son also said he kept the class involved, asked everyone questions and was funny. My son went on his first drive with very little experience, we had only driven with him in a parking lot. When the instructor dropped him off at home he gave me an evaluation sheet with areas checked off that he needed to work on before the next drive and even how many hours he would need to practice to pass the road test. At the classroom we were given a log book to keep track of how much he had driven so after we practiced with him, I called in and scheduled his second drive. He passed the road test without a problem! Both the instructors were really nice and helped me understand what I needed to do as a parent to help my son learn how to drive. read more

We went with the road to excellence Gold package which included a classroom session and 4 driving sessions and were pleased. The instructors were extremely professional and my Son seemed to click well with them. My son had a positive experience when he took the in-class course and driving sessions through Institute for Drivers Safety two years ago, so it was an easy decision when it was time for our daughter to take Drivers Ed on what company to go with, Institute for Drivers Safety. Again, nothing but positive! She took the in-class course, and drove for four sessions. She had the opportunity to drive with Scott Tyman, David Sroka, Juan Cruz, and Scott Klecka. She drove with the instructors in various situations including on the freeways, at night, in rush hour, downtown, at the airport, etc... All four instructors were very professional, patient, and gave very thorough feedback and guidance to continue to help her improve on each skill. They each took time to communicate to us, as parents, before and after each driving session. Our daughter remained comfortable and confident in her driving skills, and has a positive outlook on driving. She also has a greater insight into the laws, and extra safety guidelines, when she is on the road. I was disappointed with our experience at this school. We purchased on of the higher priced packages for our 15 year old daughter. The classroom portion of our package was fine. Our problem was with the private driving instructors, with the exception of one instructor, Phil. Phil was professional, patient, and what you would want in someone trusted to teach your teen how to drive. However the second instructor asked my daughter what we both felt were personal questions not pertaining to the session and put her in an uncomfortable position. He also bad mouthed the previous instructor to us which we didn't appreciate. We then had a 3rd lesson with Phil who again, we found to be terrific. However our final exam was with JJ, who had negative things to say about my daughter's precious instructors. He also had a negative tone about her driving, but said he would give her a passing grade anyway. I pointed out to him that I observed that their instructors had all said bad things about each other after our sessions, and he just laughed it off. For the money we spent, I didn't leave with a lot of confidence about what my daughter learned or really feel like I had a fair assessment of her driving skill. It was also extremely hard to schedule our sessions and felt like we got a lot of attitude over the phone. Just a recommendation to research several schools before you plop down your money. And if you do chose to go with this school, request instructors by name rather than letting them assign you to whoever is available. read more
