I took my child here last year for an eye exam and would never return. After a Level 3 extended eye…read moreexam which took hours, included all kinds of gimmicks the exam cost close to $400 (normal eye insurance like I have does not cover these types of exams), my son refused to wear his glasses after a couple weeks. He told me his vision was blurry and he saw better without the glasses. Dr. Jennifer who runs BVVT and did my child's eye exam also diagnosed my son with uncoordinated eye muscles -Convergence Insufficiency-and told us he needed at least six months of intensive vision therapy that would cost about $8,000 and insurance wouldn't cover it. I mentioned this newly discovered eye problem and how he needed therapy to help his eyes work together to my son's speech therapist and her eyes widened. She told me vision therapy is nonsense. We ended up having to change speech pathologists and I again mentioned it to our new therapist and she too told me it's nonsense. At that point I met with the pediatrician who explained to me the reason vision therapy is not covered by any vision insurance is because it has never been proven to work by the American Optometric Society. Let that sink in: vision therapy is quackery. There are no studies that affirm it improves people's vision. There is no vision insurance anywhere that will pay for it. The pediatrician recommended we take my son to an actual doctor, an opthalmologist, for a second opinion. We did and yes, my kid needs glasses, but an entirely different prescription. As in our new prescription bore no resemblance at all to the one we got from Dr. Jennifer, who runs BVVT. During our several hours long 'Level 3' eye exam she actually double checked his eyes and completely changed his RX on the fly which at the time seemed unusual. The second opinion MD appointment involved a straightforward eye exam for glasses, eye dilation and resulted in a correct RX for glasses. At BV vision therapy. The MD also confirmed our kid does not the condition Convergence Insufficiency; there's no issue at all with his eye muscle coordination, just garden variety needs glasses. Bottom line: Boulder Valley Vision Therapy is a sham. There is no medical organization that advocates vision therapy. All the speech pathologists seem to know about this quackery because vision therapists claim their therapy can cure reading issues, dylexia, learning disabilities and all kinds of things that have nothing to do with your child's eyes.

Because of this question, which was unsolicited, my medical insurance was billed in addition to vision. When I questioned the charge, the billing manager told me that I must have forgotten the conversation because they always communicate things like that very clearly. The only thing communicated was that I should continue doing what I'm already doing. Before this conversation I even made a point of saying I didn't want one of their services - something to do with a picture of my eyes for health - because it wasn't covered under vision insurance. I'm disgusted with the experience and feel like I've been scammed! There's nothing routine about a routine exam from Front Range Eye Associate!
