He's in the Saplings class and loves talking about all of his little friends and teachers when he's at home. My absolute favorite thing about farm school is how they spend so much time outdoors. My son comes home tired and dirty and talks about his "nature walks". I love that it's play-based, and that they don't send home dozens of art projects per month. I love the all-natural materials, the wooden toys, and the home environment in a center setting. My son helps make lunches, wash dishes, clean up the tables, sweeps. And the ANIMALS! He's always raving about the goats and the bunnies and the cat. It's just such a wonderful, loving preschool. And the food for the young kids is vegetarian, organic, local, and seems to be quite tasty. I can't recommend this school enough.

From all that I can tell, they are taking the educational research that talks to what truly works in the best interest of children and applying it in all aspects of the school. The class sizes are small, there are many opportunities for mixed-age learning, there is direct teaching of core concepts, highly individualized learning, lots of outside and student-led activities, and an integrated social/emotional component that is woven throughout the structure of the days that helps our children learn one of the most valuable skills that will serve them through life - emotional intelligence! This is not an unstructured school - there is structure and academics happening even when it can appear unstructured. For instance, I volunteer once a week for Nature Literacy in "the woods" as my daughter calls it. I have watched students create amazing learning opportunities for themselves that are completely self-initiated. I've seen them perform experiments on the flow of the creek, figure out how to construct a dragon's lair with tree branches, create mud homes, and compare/contrast plants and rocks. This is all proof to me that these kids are learning HOW to learn and LOVE LEARNING! All things that make both my mommy heart and my teacher heart very happy. :) Our daughter is currently in the 1st grade in a 1st/2nd grade classroom. She came with a high reading level and (in my mind) a low math ability which was compounded with a self-esteem issue from her kinder experience in a local charter school. Her teacher has done an excellent job of finding out what she needs and providing her with opportunities to expand her learning and fill in the gaps she had. Within the first semester the esteem issues I was worried about have all but vanished, and she truly enjoys math as well as reading now! I love the way IOS approaches assessment of the students - there are no grades (which did make this former teacher a little nervous at first), but it has been replaced with anecdotal records that are far more meaningful than a single page of letter grades! I received a 10 page document that took me through the semester, explained what was learned in class and how my daughter is progressing. We used this document to review our previous goals and set new ones as a team - teacher, parents, and student. This is authentic learning at its best! I really cannot say enough about this school. Parents are encouraged to participate in the school day, and I love that this school is as welcoming to the parents as it is for the students. This school may not be for everyone, but I am confident that this is the school for our family and for our daughter. :)

There is an indoor gym, a tech room, an outside classroom, splash pad (for summer) and a cafe/art studio. At a young age, our kiddos were learning how to transition to new spaces and learn in all different environments. There have been changes with leadership and teachers during this time, but I feel like every change has been for the better and with the kids in mind. My 2 children have always felt comfortable with their teachers and as a parent I know the school leadership is listening to any concerns I might bring and addresses them appropriately. My oldest just graduated preK and I feel strongly that she is ready for Kindergarten. The PREP makes learning fun and my kids playing "school" on the weekends is a testament to the environment that is being fostered here.

When a child is being hurt by another student, I believe parents should be notified and given a clear understanding of what happened and how the situation was addressed. I have also had concerns about repeated behaviors such as hitting, kicking, and biting. From my perspective as a parent, there does not always seem to be a clear or consistent approach to addressing these situations. I believe children deserve to feel safe at school, and parents deserve to feel confident that appropriate steps are being taken when safety concerns arise. Another concern is the consistency of communication from management. At times, information and expectations have seemed unclear or inconsistent, which can be frustrating for families trying to understand what is happening and what procedures are being followed. Choosing childcare or a school for your child requires a great deal of trust. Unfortunately, based on my experience, I do not feel that this is an environment where I am comfortable recommending the school to other families. I strongly encourage parents considering this school to ask specific questions about HOW injuries AND behavioral incidents ARE handled, WHEN parents are notified, and WHAT MEASURES are in place to keep children safe.

Although we moved out of state after her graduation, we had the chance to visit Austin in the summer of 2024 due to my work. Increasing his focus, self regulation, intentionality, task completion, and an understanding of the world around him. Not the rote memorization of letters and numbers that are as meaningless as us memorizing Mandarin characters when done inappropriately. There is definitely the introduction of these objectives, but they aren't pushed on the students who aren't socially ready to absorb the content. The teachers follow the student lead and support their academic readiness when students show the signs that they are ready. Kindly and appropriately challenging students by meeting them where they are at. I could write a novel about how this school has supported my child's social/emotional and academic well being. I will leave it with the fact that I have been in early education and public K-12 education for nearly 20 years. We need more schools like Young Minds who truly tend to student social, emotional, and academic readiness to inspire the foundation of life long love of learning.
