Now, my handyman abilities are pretty limited. I might be able to drill a few holes and hammer a few nails, but don't ask me to lift any lumber or install vents or pipes... Having said that, I feel that a lot of the items here are non-intimidating and accessible for casual work. But there are also many stocked aisles with all sorts of stuff I would never know what to do with. In sum, this place seems to have a bit of everything despite not being a hangar-sized warehouse of crap. Maybe I've just been ensconced in the Midwest faux-charm for so long, but the people here are so friendly! I'd never get this kind of attention and friendliness in Chicago. And the what they say is true. Ace is the place with the helpful hardware folks.

When I go in, I ask where something I need is located in the store and all I want is to just go make a decision and get in and out as quickly as possible. Usually a man/clerk will tag only and mansplain and second guess my choice, or ask me how I know what I need. Basically saying things that are extremely outdated and sexist. I've gone in and watched how male shoppers are treated and it's a whole different thing. If you bring it to the cashiers attention in hopes she will let management know and make a change that fits with this decade, you hear, they're just trying to be gentlemen, hun. If you're a woman that is capable and isn't a damsel in distress, you shouldn't go there. It's an absurd and incredibly upsetting experience.

My friend and I went into Drillen True Value Hardware at 460 Cottage Road in South Portland, Maine…read more I was in the bolts and screws aisle, not quite finding what I needed. My (very) adult female friend told me she would ask an employee to assist. She went to the counter and asked the young man (with a reddish beard) at the cash register if someone could help us with the screws. The employee called out to another man working there, saying, "This woman needs help with a screw!" Then, laughing, he added in an equally loud voice, "You know what those are, don't you?" The two men laughed, as did the woman who was working the other cash register. Other customers witnessed this exchange. It was an ugly and humiliating display. It was deeply offensive and I'm unsure why a customer (female or male) would be treated that way. There are two things, however, that I am quite sure of. First, she and I, of course, will never enter this hardware store again. Second, we will not be timid about letting our friends and acquaintances in South Portland and neighboring Cape Elizabeth know how Drillen Hardware demeans women.

I literally checked the store hours before heading over, a 17 minute ride to go to a closed store. Google search which is fast and reliable. They were dependable and reliable up until now. They are the only establishment under 30 minutes from my home that sells what I needed. Item is reasonably priced even though more expensive than Home Depot. Here again, giving my business to them!! These hardware stores are closing due to these competitors, yet they have no concern for the folks who chose them over the big box stores. Why would you go from convenient hours of 8a-6p for people who work. NOW, they are open weekdays for people who don't work!!! 9-5 known business hours yet they will be open for those who: a. Live local b. Work local c. People who don't work. I do not have the time to wait until Saturday for my need. I can order it in line and get it by Friday! Their website says "give us a call" number says person not available and beeps! So is that your number or is it not? Guessing games not my thing. This is the reason these types of stores are closing.

Amazing, fast service during another one of those winter weather issues. I spent a lot of time…read moretrying to prep for winter with my snow blower. Prepping the gas, starting it throughout the summer months and letting it run, checking the oil. Despite all this, when the big day came to use the snow blower, it wouldn't blow snow, just start and stall over and over and over. As everyone knows, if you live in Maine you need to have a way to remove snow, especially if your driveway is as long as ours. So I started calling around and every repair place was booked out by at least 4 weeks. Luckily I found Sportsman's through word of mouth and they can to pick up our snowblower ($15 pick up and $15 drop off). They repaired it within 3 days! We had a storm the following day and BAM snowblower repaired and working better than ever. It even came back with an EXTREMELY detailed repair report which I appreciate! I highly recommend this place for their prompt turnaround times and responsiveness!

In the second area he lingered a few feet behind me for a long time after I found the area I needed: which I noticed, thought was strange, and I got the sense that he was trying to be intimidating. Then another costumer needed help finding something so he walked a away for less than a minute. Then he returned & continued eyeballing me. Very obvious and intrusive. After I found what I needed I walked to the front, and when I passed him I said; "You watching me like a hawk?" His reply was "yeah". I've been followed around in stores before, and I really don't like being profiled. But he admitted what he was he was doing which is accusing someone of being a thief by de facto. I'm not a thief, and have never stolen from a business. I voiced my protest to the guy at the front of the store. I really don't like leaving reviews that are negative because it affects everyone there. But when there's a employee who acts like that I'm sure the business owner would want to be aware. I enjoyed perusing the aisles and displays to look for things I didn't even know I needed. There's a fine line between 'want' and 'need' and that line is easily erased here. The prices are the first thing you'll notice. While they are not necessarily "high" for quality items and equipment, they are a little on the pricier side. Perhaps that's unfair to say since all the Le Creuset stuff is placed right in the front of the store. I did end up getting some charming plates (I already have the perfect dish in mind) and a few other little gadgets that I decided I ultimately "needed". They are friendly here. Though I did not ask for assistance personally, I overheard someone else ask one of the gents working there about the difference between the cheaper and more expensive pans and he was quite thorough with his layman's response. I love stores like this but somehow I felt that they had just a little bit less variety than I would have liked. They do seem to favor a handful of brands, leaving options pretty minimal. Still, it is a big space and the selection/quality decimates a place like Target or BB&B. Yes. I'm sure I'll return someday soon.
