I needed to make extra copies of keys as I am moving to a new apartment. Typically I make key copies at a Lowe's or Home Depot, but a friend mentioned this place so I had to come see it! First step in, I love it! Tons of people helping customers find what they are looking for. As soon as I walked in someone asked if they could help me with anything, and they quickly made my keys for me. I spent time picking out key covers and carabiners. I'm so glad someone told me about this place. It's much closer than driving to other larger stores and they had plenty of stuff! I split an order amongst different stores. this location, whether it was personal or not, the cashier did not offer a receipt. It was uncomfortable asking his trainer for a receipt, i experienced a lot of unwillingness and rude certainty. Eventually the new hire was able to provide a receipt. AMAZING selection for such a small store. SO GLAD we still have privately-owned hardware stores in our community - with knowledgeable staff, a repairs department, and lots of materials by the foot. Staff can be hit or miss in terms of friendliness, or being a little quirky, full of corny jokes... but almost all of them are knowledgeable and this place has saved me tons of time throughout my home projects. Location is near a bunch of seedier stuff, but I've never had a negative interaction outside the store, and there's usually ample parking except at peak times. read more

I have been here and had lots of help in the past finding the right tools/hardware for house chores. The majority of the employees are very helpful and polite. There is a no backpack policy so it is best if you drive to the store as opposed to walk. When we asked if we could enter with the bags, we were given mixed messages. One employee said we could enter because our bags were similar to the purses that other women were carrying in the store, however, after we entered and started shopping, an elderly employee with a misshapen white goatee told us to leave immediately. There were two of us shopping so once we left, one of us stood outside with the backpacks while I went inside and paid for our items. I personally do not think the no backpacks rule is that great, and I think it is odd that it was not enforced for purses or other bags. If they truly want an effective policy, they should ban pants with pockets. Sad. read more

I was renovating several rental units and needed new bathroom lighting. My first thought was Home Depot or Lowe's. I was short on time so I just stopped by Maine Hardware. I was a bit disappointed at first because I didn't find much lighting in the store - so I asked. "Is this all the lighting you carry?" The answer was surprising. The associate said no, the entire basement was filled with lighting. I was taken to a lighting catalog that had hundreds of pages and after a few minutes of browsing I found the light that I wanted to buy. I assumed that I'd need to order the light because it was just one light out of hundreds of different styles. The associate said "let me check our stock". Then he appeared a few minutes later with both model numbers that I wanted to purchase. Amazing. What a surprise. Maine Hardware carries the Progress Lighting Brand and has more stock in inventory than Home Depot or Lowe's. The price fit my budget and the quality of the lighting was more than good enough for my rental unit. I had no idea that Maine Hardware had a basement. And I certainly didn't know about the huge lighting selection. This will be my fist stop for lighting fixtures in Portland, Maine for now on. Fantastic service!!! read more

Alright, so Portlander's know that the strip mall on St. John St is a little... let's say... rough around the edges. I can't say I've spent much time walking around this area exploring the local businesses, and because I haven't I missed entirely that Maine Hardware Store was located here. A recent desire to do every DIY project on Pinterest encouraged me to come for wood stain recently... and now? I'm actively making up reasons to come! It's too small of physical space for the staff, customers, and stuff they have. So it spills out to the sidewalk and clutters the aisles. But I like that. I like that it feels like I'm in someone I know and trusts basement or garage (and harkens back to every hardware store my grandfather and mom used to drag me to when I was little). At a hardware store, things shouldn't be pristine and sterile, because that's disingenuous. I like that it smells like wood and paint here. I like that there's free popcorn. And I really like the staff. Everyone's so politically correct these days that sometimes customer service - or the true nature of helping someone - seems stuffy and forced. Not here. These are real Mainers helping other real Mainers do what Mainers do best... work with our hands to create, build, destroy, and rebuild. The first time I came, there was a girl with pink streaks in her hair; I wasn't expecting that at a place like this (but it shows you how much the times have changed). And she was super patient and thoughtful checking us out. The last time I came an elderly gentleman met me at the door. It was VERY busy here that day. But he asked me what I needed - like i was the only person there. "Wooden stakes," I responded. "Big or small?" He asked. "About my size." I told him (FYI: I'm pint/travel-sized). "Oh, so, big then!" He stated. We laughed. We had a moment. We were people to each other - not just a customer, and not just an employed person looking to make a transaction. Then he brought me to the aisle where they were. "You don't have to do this," I told him as I trailed behind. "Sure I do, because you want to get in and out... I can tell." Very astute. Very true. And a process which could have taken 15 minutes or longer, took just 5 because of his help. He even offered to carry them out to my car. Who has customer service like this anymore? Maine Hardware does. Because they're locally owned. And we all know that Mainer's possess a kind of hospitality and consideration not found anywhere else on the planet. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to find more DIY projects so I can continue going to Maine Hardware! read more

When you go to Home Depot or Lowes, a part time employee (if you can find one at all) will usually meet your questions with uncomfortable looks and then search around for a handout of some kind. They may suggest you come back on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month when the person who knows answers to questions visits the store between the hours of 2:13 and 2:22. Or they may just sort of confabulate. Their products are often oddly flawed or flimsy, like the shop vac that can't seem to pick up sand (really). You pay more at Maine Hardware but the things they sell are not garbage, their clerks know what they are talking about and the value of your many is far better spent there than anywhere else near Portland. It has taken me 5 years of home ownership to finally figure this out. Buy lumber products from Hammond, stone from Gagne & son, yard stuff from Paris farmer's union and hardware from Maine Hardware. And don't ever go to Lowes or Home Depot! read more

Last Monday, August 1, around 10:15 AM, I was being helped by a young lady at the counter with a 7 foot piece of 4" plastic pipe. By the foot it was $28.00. If it had been a 10-footer it would have cost $30.00. She asked another counter worker if she could pro-rate. He said no. When I moved into my apartment, my shower was leaking like CRAZY. My landlord came over to see if she could fix it after a quick plumbing lesson by some of the people over at Maine Hardware. When she couldn't figure something out, she called the hardware store. I'm the type of person to instantly jump on YouTube if I can't figure something out, but no, this is Maine...you can just call the hardware store for help and you'll actually talk to a helpful person. A few weeks later, I decided to go over to Maine Hardware for some paint. I knew this wouldn't necessarily be a quick trip, as I'm pretty indecisive and I knew it would take me more than a minute to find the perfect shade of gray for the furniture I was about to paint. I was in the store FOR AN HOUR. This is because the gentleman at the paint counter was super helpful and friendly. Once he found out that I was working on a DIY project, he was sure to give me plenty advice and even pulled out some pamphlets to give me a little more inspiration. Once I finally picked my shade of paint, he worked to make sure I was getting the best bang for my buck. I always appreciate a good bargain! I also went to Maine Hardware during their Ladies Night event, which was amazing and PACKED. The whole store was 20% off, they had food/wine tasting, and even manicures in the paint section! The ONLY reason I am giving four stars instead of five is because twice when I went to check out, they forgot to ask me if I had a rewards card (which I do). This means I missed out on getting things for the sale price. I know this is partly my fault, but I do wish they had reminded me during the checkout process. read more

On 02/12/2018 I had some electrical work done including installation of a ceiling-mounted Moravian star light fixture in the kitchen. It's a gorgeous fixture, but the electrician and I discovered just before installation that the light bulb I'd bought for it was too large, and none of the other light bulbs I had in the house would fit either. The electrician went to lunch while I went to Maine Hardware to look for a small but bright bulb. I swaddled the Moravian star light fixture in towels and drove to the store - happily it's only five minutes away. I'm sure I looked a sight carrying what appeared to be an infant into the store. Mike Boucher saw me holding the bundle and studying bulbs in the lighting aisle and came over to help. He had me gently lay the fixture down on a table in the paint section while he brought over possible light bulbs. All were too big (the space inside is very tight). He recommended a small rough service incandescent bulb, but I wanted an LED bulb (they really keep the electric bill down), so we headed to the commercial section in the basement. As we went down the stairs, Mike gently cradled the towel-swaddled light fixture in his arms as if it were his own newborn. In the cellar he found me an LED bulb with good brightness that would fit in the fixture's tight space: a Satco 7 watt bulb that resembles an incandescent, puts out 800 lumens, has a 2700 color rating (warm), and lasts 15,000 hours - cost $14.99 plus tax. Heather, another employee (unfortunately I didn't get her last name), took the fixture upstairs with the bulbs so I could ring up. Heather tenderly bore my beautiful light fixture in her arms as if it were her own baby. I appreciate the effort Mike took to find an LED bulb that fit and was bright enough; also I greatly appreciate his and Heather's reverent handling of my lovely light fixture. read more

This store is great. The staff is available but not too pushy. They're friendly, super knowledgeable and it's clear some have worked, or currently work, in the trades. If you ask a clerk a question and they don't know the answer, they'll find someone who does. My dad loves it too. He's brought in questionable plumbing parts they've actually fixed for him on the spot. And although the location may not be the most scenic in town, I like that it's close and I don't have to go to the mall area. read more
