So I called Dave, he said he would be down to my house and he showed up on time, diagnosed the problem quickly, as well as fixing several other issues and came back to repair the issue on time at a reasonable price. When he returned to do the repair, he brought a young man with him who was so very polite and respectful I now have a new electrician. They came, they were as neat as possible, tarps and they took their shoes off before the stepped in my house, that is respectful. I was…read morepeppered with questions, but he didn't seem to listen to the answers, came across as arrogant, and interrupted constantly. Worst of all though was that he didn't seem to have a full grasp of the relevant electrical code, despite supposedly himself being an inspector, and clearly hadn't read the Tesla charger installation manual (see attached picture). He said he would install #6 romex wire (no conduit) as he has done in many other installations. But romex wire is only rated for a 60°C temperatures (not 90°C like say THWN-2 wire). The tesla installation manual on page 5 states "If installing for maximum power, use minimum 6 AWG, 90° C-rated copper wire for conductors. NOTE: Upsize conductors if necessary" https://www.tesla.com/sites/default/files/support/charging/Gen3_WallConnector_Installation_Manual.pdf Supposedly Mike has gone through Tesla's training for installing the wall charger. I guess he wasn't listening in that class. When I pointed out the minimum #6 wire specification from the Tesla manual, he stormed off and left boiling with rage. For those that are interested, the following thread explains why #6 romex is not code compliant for a 48A continuous load like a Tesla Charger: https://forums.mikeholt.com/threads/tesla-charging-station.2561702/post-2709508 Anyone who has had the misfortune of having their tesla charger installed by mike using #6 romex would need to reduce their breaker size to 50A and set their Tesla charger to a lower 40A max charging rate to not exceed the ampacity of the #6 romex. ------- Update following Mike's reply: NEC 240.4b is irrelevant and raising this as a justification for ignoring the instructions in the Tesla Wall Charger installation manual just further highlights Mike's lack of understanding and willingness to accept and correct his mistake. 240.4b relates to the breakers (OCPD). The issue here is not the breakers, it's whether the wire connected to the breakers is rated to pass a CONTINUOUS current of 48 amps (the max charging rate of the Tesla charger). NEC 210.19 Conductors-Minimum Ampacity and Size is key here and says: "The conductor ampacity may require other correction or adjustment factors applicable to the conductor installation. a.Where a branch circuit supplies *continuous* loads or any combination of continuous and noncontinuous loads, the minimum branch-circuit conductor size shall have an allowable ampacity not less than the noncontinuous load plus *125% of the continuous load*." Perhaps Mike does not realize that a Tesla charger is treated in code as a continuous load and therefore requires a 125% adjustment factor in the current? If the continuous load is 48A, then 125% of the continuous load is 60A. By Mike's own admission below, #6 Romex is only rated for 55A, not 60A, so it's too low of a specification. Putting a 55A capable wire on a 60A breaker, doesn't magically make the wire able to handle more continuous current. Sure you can save a few bucks by installing #6 Romex instead of #6 THWN within conduit, or even #4 Romex, but doesn't meet the requirements of Tesla and it doesn't meet code. I've hired plenty of electricians in my day - let alone general contractors and folks to do all…read morekinds of work on all sorts of properties. I can do a lot of work construction myself - so when it comes times to hire somebody I'm basically impossible to please because I always feel like I'm paying someone else too much to do a worse job than I could do if only I had the tools and time. Moreover, normally with the trades people it is really difficult to communicate, get a clear picture of the work, understand what sort of materials they will use and at what price point, and what the breakdown of their labor will be. Not so, with Alpha Electrical services. Konstantinos was wonderfully communicative, and friendly to boot. This guy even called me back while he was on vacation halfway around the world to make sure we had our work scheduled at the right time and day. On top of that, he sent me links to the materials he was going to install (several outdoor GFI outlets - some attached to my house, and some out in my yard and on my patio). He explained all of the electrical code protocols, exactly how he would run the lines, where he would put the boxes, and offered friendly advice about the best equipment and installation procedures. When the day came to do the work, Konstantinos arrived on time and although he worked solo - he installed two yard outlets, three outdoor gfi boxes, and had to run new lines from a new breaker that had to punch out of my concrete basement walls. Amazingly, he hid the wires wonderfully behind my sheetrock basement ceiling with almost no perceptible cut and the punches to the outside were clean, minimal, and sealed up beautifully. This guy communicated wonderfully, worked efficiently, treated my property as if it were his own, and did a job better than I was expecting while all along the way suggesting little tweaks and improvements without being a pushy salesperson. (He also treated my little dog who is very fearful with a lot of respect so naturally that earned him mega bonus points). In short, I basically never pay contractors to do a job and feel good about it at the end but this guy really delivered with a price that beat the competition! BTW Whoever this Dan R. guy is clearly is out out of his mind - my experience working with Alpha Electrical couldn't have been more stress free, seamless, professional, and beyond satisfactory both in regards to price point and end-product. I just wish I could find other contractors this reliable.
