We ate here tonight with our four young kids ... We had the tastiest meal! We know our Indian food and eat out about twice per week. This place has FABULOUS food. The tandoori chicken was in the top three I've had anywhere ... The naan is so fluffy and flavorful, my kids pounce on it! Tonight we had lamb (in some sort of light cream sauce with amazing spices) and chicken tiki masala and aloo gobi. All of the dishes were exceptional. We went on Wednesday night as that seemed to be what yelp reviews recommended. Wednesday night is buffet night. The buffet was small, but the food was decent. I did not see anyone that seemed to care much about what was on the buffet. When something ran out, it just stayed empty. A plus is that it is BYOB, so we bought in a bottle of wine, so drinks cost almost nothing. This combined with a coupon makes a cheap night out. We used a coupon for a discount, otherwise I would say the buffet was overpriced. I think it was $15.99. There were 4 or 5 other tables. The ambiance does not exist.. We only ate the buffet, so I know nothing about what is on the menu. I doubt I would eat hear again, but if you get a coupon and eat out a lot, you may as well try the Wednesday night buffet and bring a bottle of wine or beer. read more

Service ok. Food very good. Be sure to try some apps, make it an experience for your taste buds. They were out of lamb kabobs the night we went, but that forced us to find something new. Reasonable price. Note that take away leftovers are just thrown into one container and not separated;everything gets mixed. That's then part of service that annoyed me when we got home. Had a chance to really observe this time around since our waiter had no idea what he was doing, and I'm pretty sure he barely understood us. First of all, has anyone been to an indian resteraunt that didn't have some tradition indian music playing? Not like this is a prerequisite, but the dead silence can become awkward when you are trying to have a conversation with your significant other and the weird indian guy is looming in the background. We asked for a cucumber salad, I am pretty sure all that Forest Gump, heard us say was 'salad', cause all we ended up receiving was a barren plate decorated with bits of shredded iceberg and a few random beans. Oh also don't forget "peas and carrots" as Forest would say, but we'll call him Haresh Gump for the purpose of being cultured. At some point during mid appetizer debauchery (the appetizer was delicious by the way). Haresh greeted us with a fancy plate of traditional indian condiments, ya know, that kind that go with the chips (which we had not yet received.) The timing seemed off as most indian places serve these first, but whatever, what did we care, we were finally getting chips!!!... But low and behold, the chips never came. We said to Haresh "Can we have some chips to go with these??" (We asked this 3 times). Apparently this translated to "Bring me my dinner right now!" So no shit, there we were, trying to enjoy our appetizer when here comes Haresh Gump with our dinner. We suddenly begin scrambling to clear off our appetizer plate while our waiter, who is about 2 chromosomes short of a chick pea, stands there awkwardly holding our dinner platter. Oh, I almost forgot to add, that when I asked for more water, rather than refilling our cup, he brought the whole damn pitcher to my table and set down beside me, I give him an 'A' for effort on that one, but back to the story.... Appetizer, mid chew, Haresh Gump, dinner platter, ACTION! So Haresh clears off our appetizer which by coincidence was SHRIMP, (not shrimp gumbo, or shrimp with potatoes, or shrimp cocktail etc. etc.), and he sets down the food platter one at a time while verbally narrating his actions, as if to prove he can understand english... "Rice. Naan. Molli Kafta." (Inner dialog, thats right, thats naan, and this is a plate and this is my fist, now RUN FOREST RUN!). Finally we get to enjoy our meal. Which was pretty decent, I'm not gonna totally shit on our food, even though some indian dishes look as so.... The food was decent, but as you can imagine, what began as quick outing for a bite to eat and then escalated to a three hour tour, we were fuckin lost at sea at this point man, and it was time to bail. Check please!?! Does anybody fucking speak english around here? Maybe if I go piss they will get it, we are done. No? Okay maybe if we stand up... No? Rather than spend the night at our table we walk our asses up to the front counter and asked to be cashes out. We left a $4 tip cause why the fuck not, not Haresh's fault his son stuck him behind the counter with no direction and a poor understanding of english, and waitering, and resteraunt business, and customer service! Out comes the calculator, and a copy of the menu, followed by a very puzzled look as Mr. Gump attempts to decipher what it is that we ate and how much american money it will cost us. This only takes about, oh, i don't know 10 minutes?? We nervously paced back and forth, I think at one point the idea of running to our cars to escape this nightmare passed through our minds, but having stuck through this painful experience for this long, surely we were now in the home stretch. Mathematically defeated, Haresh Gump scribbled down a total on the check which I am pretty sure he made up. He swiped my card and we headed for the hills.... Never to be seen again. read more

This may be one of the worst Indian Restaurants in Fairfield County. It is impressive that they have been in business for as long as they have, but there is not a lot of competition in the immediate area. If you are looking for Indian food around Rt. 25, drive a couple miles north and go to Kolam. It is much better. It comes down to this: there is good Indian food, and there is generic mush. India Raj is the latter of these. All of the dishes have nearly the same taste, and that is the taste of the Shan pre-made curry boxes. If you can taste the difference between good Indian food and bad, don't bother with Raj, go to Kolam. In fact, if you do like India Raj, I challenge you to go to Kolam and see if you can taste the difference. You will loose your allegiance. read more

India Raj is a good, local place to get your fix of Indian food in the Trumbull/Monroe area. The curries are tasty, the nan is warm and soft and the management is pleasant. They serve a dinner buffet on Wednesday nights that is totally worth the money - $14 for adults, $9 for kids, all you can eat. Food is fresh and replenished often. It is an awful experience dining at this restaurant, please do not make the mistake of inviting your friends and family to this place as I did unfortunately, if you value either - your money or your food ! The service was neglectful! I was over with my friends for the Wednesday buffet and we informed the server that they were out of samosas and if they could have some more over. The server blatantly replied - "COOK DOES NOT WANT TO MAKE ANYMORE !!!" . They refused to serve anymore. I have never been here for regular dinner so I can't speak to that but my boyfriend and I love to come on Wednesday nights for the buffet. The food here is wonderful, and we have been to many Indian restaurants throughout CT. The Samosas were crispy outside withe tender veggies inside that melt in your mouth. The chicken korma could have been a bit more tender, but the balti lamb marchiwala was about the best Indian dish I have ever tasted. This is a little place where staff was friendly and food was definitely worth the half hour drive! The website was limited, but it is a BYOB which is nice too. We've been going to India Raj at least twice a month for at least 10 years for take-out and to eat in the low-key and high-quality restaurant. The Wednesday buffet is reliably great and features a nice assortment of mostly vegetable and chicken dishes, some spicy and others just really flavorful. Offerings vary from week to week, but there's typically Tandoori chicken and rice each time and you get a plate of incredibly fresh nan bread for the table. The staff couldn't be nicer or more efficient. Prices are super reasonable, too. read more

My girlfriend and I have been going to India Raj for a few years now together and every single time has been a pleasant experience. The wait staff is always friendly, seats us right away, and brings us food in a nice even order with good portions. The food always tastes delicious and it is fairly priced. I'm not and expert on Indian food but I'm a good judge of food and this place has it. The music is always authentic Indian and there is nice decoration on the interior. It's usually not too busy. Let me start by saying that because I have been enjoying Indian food for over 20 years I expect a lot. My wife and I went on a Wednesdy which is their buffet night. The food was fresh and in general was not bad. I just found some of the dishes to be bland. It's not a matter, as some might say, to ask for the dish to be made "spicer". The beauty of Indian food is that all ingredients are cooked together, adding spice after the fact takes away from the essence of what I call DELICIOUS food. I went there for a meal with my family, including very young kids. We used a groupon so it was a great deal. I have eaten at enough Indian restaurants to give a review. I think there food was good to high quality. Since we also ordered for the little kids, the dish was not to spicy and they enjoyed it. It was a fairly bare bones place but the service was attentive and the place seemed clean. There was no bar. I don't know if they allow byob but that could be a plus.
