Came in for lunch after I heard a co-worker talking about India Palace. I phoned in an order of Chicken Vindaloo, was told 15 to 20 minutes. I arrived maybe 10 minutes later. The man running the store acknowledged me and finished a conversation with another customer. He was so kind to the lady. My order came out a couple minutes later. He was so nice and friendly. Lunch had a fair size portions of rice and vindaloo. The vindaloo was bursting with flavor and perfect heat. Not heat that hurts your lips but the perfect heat that make your eye sweat. NOT recommending this place for both food and service. A few months ago I ordered two vegan dishes for take out and was assured they were fully vegan (no meat, fish, ghee, paneer, etc). I double checked again when I picked up the order and was confirmed my order was completely vegan. I gave a good tip as well for their service + considering they may have only little business these days due to COVID. Once I brought the food home, however, one dish had meat all over it and the other had paneer in it. So naturally I called right back. The man who answered the phone (the same person who took my order and payment) was extremely rude - to my utter surprise - and denied that I got the wrong dishes. I politely explained there is indeed meat and paneer in them and I can bring the dishes back if he wants to see them but he abruptly put the phone down on me! This behavior repeated one more time. Third time he wouldn't even answer the phone!! I was completely shocked. Gladly took my money including a nice tip without any qualm for food I could not eat. Shame on you, India Palace! I've really gotten into Indian food lately, and this place rocks! My husband and I loved the food for dinner here. I had the butter chicken, my husband had the lemon tandoori chicken. We also had paneer nan bread with it. Very nice! I couldn't even finish it all I had to bring some home which will make a nice snack later! The only reason I don't give it five stars instead of four was the service. They were kind of slow and it wasn't that busy in there, and their English was a bit choppy, which I'm sorry but that gets on my nerves. Anyway, I will definitely be back to try their lunch buffet sometime ...I saw the set up and it looks like it's definitely worth trying! Survived two different wives, separately, mind you! Second one's a keeper. I've dined on their food hundreds of times, maybe more carry-out than dine in--I live 600 yards from their door. When they opened, Lawrence celebrated its most unique ethnic food, right behind Chinese, Mexican and pizza. There was no sushi, Thai, even Greek. Wow. Yea. TIP: my review isn't worth a damn more than the next. HINT: I may be old (snort). Over the years about everything has happened to me here. From service to grand slam home run to dreadful. Food that was spectacular to that which never showed up (carry-out or deliver). Dine anywhere over 100 times and you'll experience it all as well. Consistent: the people that run the restaurant are really, really nice folks, sweet as hell, honest, dedicated to your experience. I've never had a bad people problem here. Ever. Ever. Consistent: service is as other have observed is up and down. I've always said Lawrence's problem is the abundance of cheap college labor that can't deliver on a consistent basis. Consistent: the food has been good here, but not always great. Again, consistency is a huge problem with Lawrence in general. No dining spot avoids or has avoided it unless you count Krause dining (now no more) which was a tightly guarded very small world class exception and Cafe Beautiful (lives!), hands down Lawrence's greatest class dining experience (sorry Pachamama's, Merchant's P&P). 2.5 stars. Call me cynical but I personally think India Palace is overrated because it is the only Indian restaurant in Lawrence. To the extent that I'm familiar with the authenticity of Indian food (i.e., not THAT much - but I don't consider myself completely aloof, either) India Palace fell more on the inauthentic side. The vegetable korma felt un-korma-like especially given the odd presence of lima beans/corn and lack of potato that I'm used to. The vegetable selection seemed to be based more on Hy-Vee's frozen vegetable collection (very suspiciously square-shaped carrots gave it away...) rather than actual flavor. Well, I don't care about authenticity, you might say; as long as the food tastes good does it matter? I agree with this sentiment in many cases but to that end I will say this: the dish lacked that sweet, aromatic freshness that can be extracted from these vegetables, and all components ended up with a monotonous mushy texture. Authentic or not, it was terribly blah. Due to my awful memory and fear of being inaccurate, I can't speak in as much detail about the other dishes I've had here on previous visits, but I can say I've never been impressed. Service is on the slow/sloppy end as many other have mentioned, and given the quality of dishes I actually find prices to be a bit on the steep end (my veggie korma was $9.95, with most other entrees in the $12.95 range - I'm comparing to other businesses in Lawrence, mind you). As a former citizen of the River City and a lover of Indian food, I have been here many many times over the years. The folks who run this restaurant are extra nice and I haven't ever had a bad meal here. Not once. Every now and again the service is a bit off in one way or another, but it's still a worthwhile haunt. I was trying to think of some of the standouts from the menu, but I've really never been disappointed with anything I've ordered here. The mango lassis are so huge they could be a meal on their own. They have several kinds of naan to choose from. Their chutneys are fabulous. I love the mint one. It has a really nice kick. They make a mean tikka masala, everything they do with lamb is amazing and their saag paneer is incredibly tasty with a nice earthy flavor. "Every time we come here to eat, I'm reminded of why we usually get takeout..." India Palace has some of the best Indian food in the Kansas City area. They offer a variety of choices, including vegan and vegetarian dishes, which was one of the main reasons my boyfriend and I picked it as the setting for one of our first dates. Most of the dishes I have sampled so far have been delicious, from the naan to the vegetable korma to the gulab jamun. The only food to date that I have been unsatisfied with was the mango chutney, which the boyfriend and I sampled today and both found to be way too oniony. The biggest problem I have with India Palace--and the reason I can't give them four stars--is their service. We decided to sample the buffet today in order to try some new dishes. Our water glasses were filled right when we sat down, and then not again for the remainder of the meal. This is not uncommon; we often go long stretches without drink refills, and getting our check always takes ages. The food is what keeps us coming back, but usually for takeout or delivery. read more

Lunch buffet is preferable coz there are options to pick from in case a dish isn't good, but you are stuck with what you order during a dinner service ( À la carte ). As of this writing, India Palace is the only restaurant in Lawrence that slings the vindaloos--- (oh well, Ruchi, we have the memories...) but I am grateful they're around. I'll admit, the buffet is one of my favorites in town for freshness--- even if they don't stock it with my favorite dishes. (They always have samosas, though, so no one's complaining...) Seems like everyone else has done a fine job of expounding on the state of the buffet (which is a great, hurrah, hurrah) so let me continue by saying I also like the menu. How many nights have I ordered chicken biryani to-go so I could quietly stuff my face at home...? (You don't need to know, really). Other faves? The jalfrezi or vindaloo chicken. Chicken Tikka Masala. That is all. Oh, alright. It's not Olive Garden? (not hating). It's hard to impress me with Indian/Pakistani cooking, because my mom is pretty much the best cook in the world. It's a fact. It's science. But India Palace provides the next best thing in Lawrence, and that's saying a lot. The Chicken Tikka Masala is pretty much my staple, followed closely by the Vegetable Korma. Mixing the two creates a delightful dish. The mango juice and lassis are delicious, depending on your taste (lassis are a bit tangy, not really my thing, but other people love them). Most of their chicken dishes are good, and the vindaloos are good as well. I find the nan to be highly overpriced (it's essentially thin flatbread and not worth several dollars!), and therefore stick to rice with my curries, because it's included in the meal, and tastes just fine! Please note: in the subcontinent, mixing rice with nan is a food faux pas. Don't do it, k? Dinner is good, if a little expensive. You get a full serving of whatever you order, and if you go often enough, they know you by name and your "usual." I like that. The lunch buffet is the best deal, and you have the chance to mix up several dishes (veggie korma and chicken tikka...YUM), all for about $10. Can't go wrong there. Also, they deliver, which is a HUGE plus if you don't mind adding tip. They don't deliver every night though, based on who's working and whatnot, so don't be upset if they won't deliver on occasion. It's not you, it's them. The waitstaff are friendly, but the service is a tad on the slow side. Personally, this doesn't bother me, because I'm used to it, and because. I have no problem drawing attention to an unserved table if it's been too long. They don't really have a problem with it either, as long as rudeness is not a factor. This has never been an amazing place to eat; the tandoori chicken was ok, and the coconut soup was consistently good, but everything else I've ever had here has been a distant second to the amateurish Indian food I can throw together at home. And the service has never been good. Never. I've been served by eight year old's in family run restaurants who were more professional, prompt and on the ball. In the past, I've just shrugged off the bad service because I knew to expect it, but lately, it's gone from laughable to outright rage inducing. It's gotten so my family has only been getting take out from them, because we didn't want to deal with whatever the hell is wrong with the staff/management there. But I'm done. I'll eat at Taco Bell before I eat at India Palace again. The straw that broke the camel's back was a small, simple take out order. We were there on a weekend night, about seven thirty, not rush hour, but not anywhere near the time the kitchen starts to shut down. An incredibly hostile hostess told us she'd take our order, and then disappeared (she was so overtly rude that my kids asked me if I knew her, like we were mortal enemies or something...ya, sure, I've got a list, just like Sheldon). We waited for fifteen minutes, never saw the hostess again. A server walked by, asked if we'd been helped, we said no, they said whoops sorry about that, took our teeny tiny order, and then they, too, disappeared for thirty minutes. We finally got our food. The order was coconut soup, two bowls, and it took close to an hour. I'm pretty sure if you stuck a ladle between my two toes, a la My Left Foot style, that I'd get it done in less time. When we were in the car, trying to eat after a long day, we discovered one small container of soup, no spoons. I went back in to get the missing second serving, and the server (mysteriously present; they must not have seen me coming or they'd have had time to hide) said that they always put take away soup into one container. Ok, irritating as hell, since we wanted to start eating in the car and had a big drive ahead of us, but not the worst thing a restaurant's ever done. Once back in the car, we started passing the soup around, and here's where, if you listen closely, you can hear the sad, broken-celery-like sound of the camel's back breaking: they forgot the spice. We'd essentially stopped going to India Palace except for coconut soup; I've had it at least ten times, I know what it tastes like, and these pros forgot to put any, and I mean ANY spice in it. So it took them the better part of an hour to warm up a one measuring cup size of coconut milk and shredded coconut. I don't know if they have the most amazing high stakes poker game going on in the back that requires most of the time and all of the emotional energy from the employees, I don't know if there's a crooked businessperson running India Palace who, for some convoluted reasoning unbeknownst to me, needs this business to go under (maybe they're getting the same deal the Wall Street bankers got; it seems to be lucrative to go bankrupt if you've got the right politician in your pocket), or maybe there's a Tardis in the back, and the employees aren't uncaring, unprofessional jerks but secret Time Lords running about and saving the world while still trying to work their 'cover' jobs. I just don't know. They seem to have really, REALLY pressing business elsewhere, and when they do make a rare appearance, they resent the customers for taking them away from it. Here's what I do know. Even in Lawrence, Kansas, where people are so nice, so forgiving, and amazingly accepting, the India Palace is not going to last much longer. I usually feel terrible when I see business going under, but this place deserves it. There's just no excuse for such bad food and service. There are so many students here who work incredibly hard for terrible pay, and they do it well and with a smile on their faces. So the service thing? Not acceptable. It's not like there's a shortage of willing workers. The food problem is equally unacceptable. Eating out in this economy is a luxury. I'm not wasting the little money I have on terrible restaurant food. I can't warn you strongly enough to stay away from this place. Don't waste your time and money. You'd be better off buying frozen Indian food from that Shop N Go on 23rd. The pre-made, microwavable stuff isn't good, but it's about the same level as India Palace, and a hell of a lot cheaper, and no angry/invisible servers. read more

It's the only Indian food restaurant in Lawrence, and as the old saying goes "beggars can't be choosers," but the good news is that this place really makes excellent food and, in truth, even when there was another Indian place in Lawrence, I did not go, because my heart belongs to the Palace. The lunch buffet is a great way to introduce friends and family, who may be hesitant about eating here, as it includes a wide selection off the menu (both veggie and meats). The chicken tikka masala and vegetable korma are my two favorites--both are rich and delicious and, when scooped with the freshly-made naan, make my heart rate double. The dinners are also delicious and I would suggest the panner korma--I have never seen it on the buffet (maybe because scamps like me would pick out all the panner and leave only the sauce and lonely veggies), but it is on the dinner menu and it is like eating heaven, with the rich sauce and the panner, all that lovely panner. read more

The food here will satisfy an Indian craving, but it's certainly nowhere near the best I've had. I do really love the mushroom jalfrezi and almost exclusively order that when I go for dinner. The curries are a little greasy and so is the rice. (But you know that really just makes it taste better, so take that as you will.) You can order your food mild, medium, hot or Indian hot. I usually order mine regular hot and it's spicy but not overpowering. If you don't specify, you get it mild and that's not too great. The buffet is decent. There are a lot of vegetarian options and the fried appetizers are very good. The price is average-- not bad for Indian food overall, but seems a little pricey for Lawrence and for the atmosphere. The service is the worst though. I probably would have given 4 stars except for the service. I would not recommend going on a weekend night. They usually appear to have enough staff but never come around to refill your water (they do leave a carafe, but for a large table that's not enough) or check on you until it's pay time. One time I went for the lunch buffet and ordered a mango lassi. I didn't get it until the meal was over because the waiter forgot (he also forgot my friend's diet coke). They did comp the drinks, but I like drinking the lassi while eating spicy food! Also often the waiter will just dump the menus and a carafe of water on your table and walk away. If you want to dine in, I recommend going on a weeknight or going for the buffet. If you want weekend food, get carry out (call ahead!). read more

"Namaste" ... India Palace is a "WELCOME", but Expensive, Delight! I ordered a Fat Tire ($3.00 - 12 ounce mug), one of two draft beers available on the menu, the other being Boulevard Wheat (also $3.00) and Coke products are available in addition to an assortment of bottled beer and wines. I started with the meat samosas ($4.95 for two), a blend of ground beef and lamb, lightly seasoned with Indian spices and containing less vegetables than other samosas I have eaten at chow halls around the world. They were moderate in size, crispy dough outside and hot, flavorful meat inside, accompanied by three sauces, two of them chutneys. It was one of the better samosas I have had, having eaten in dozens of Indian restaurants stateside and in the United Kingdom where Indian food is a weekly staple. We ordered the Lamb Rogan Josh ($14.95): tender morsels of lamb cooked in an onion sauce with yogurt, nuts, and a unique blend of spices and coriander; Sag Paneer ($11.95): simmered with fresh spinach cooked with homemade cheese and spices; and Beef Curry ($12.95); succulent pieces of beef cooked in thick curry sauce with herbs, all accompanied by large servings of bismati (white) rice. I asked the server if they had pilau rice, my favorite, a kind of Indian fried rice with peas, onions, and other vegetables and spices, much more flavorful than the bismati rice we received, but unnecessary because the rice is quickly covered with the entrees when consumed. All entrees and the bismati rice are served in small copper pots, piping hot from the kitchen and easily shared amongst our table. The lamb rogan josh came with medium size chunks of tender lamb in a medium-thick, creamy and mildly spicy red sauce which was delicious. At $14.95 for entrée with rice, I would expect more food, but would recommend lowering the price instead because the serving is more than enough for one person. I have seen entrees that size and quality in the $8-$12 range at other restaurants, so maybe that explains why India Palace was not busier on a Friday night. It is a shame because so many restaurants, including India Palace, try to generate profits by raising prices instead of providing quality food at a reasonable price or through competitive marketing (e.g. Social media, coupons - Groupon). In a college town like Lawrence, you are not going to generate much business by charging $10-$15 for entrees (ala carte) and that seems to be the case at India Palace. The sag paneer is a thick, spicy, creamed spinach concoction with chunks of Indian cheese and was mild enough for my Italian wife who cannot handle spicy dishes. Slightly sweet, yet spicy, it was one of the better sag paneers we have tried in recent memory, but again, at $10.95, slightly overpriced based on the inexpensive ingredients. The majority of India is vegetarian and I am a carnivore, but Indian chefs use exotic spices such as curry and coriander so well that I do not even miss the meat! The beef curry was also a bit pricey at $12.95, yet rich and delicious. As a comparison, I recently had a wonderful beef Massaman curry at Zen Zero, a Thai restaurant down the street from India Palace on Massechussetts, including jasmine rice for just $7.69 ... $5.26 less than my curry at India Palace! Mmmm, love India Palace. I have no idea what I would have done without it. After spending the summer in India, my taste for Indian food blossomed -- think the Karate Kid finishes training with Mr. Miyagi and is about to battle the Cobra Kai. After returning to the States, I had to put jalapenos on everything I ate, lest it tasted bland. Luckily, India Palace came to my rescue on many occasions. Everything is good. Obviously you can't go wrong when you order any combination of naan, King Fisher, shrimp vindaloo, butter chicken, biryani, raita, and/or anything from the Tandoor. Those recommendations might sound obvious to Indian food aficionados, but hope this helps the neophytes! Food is great; service is meh. Food: The buffet is where it is at. It is a little pricy, but worth it because it is a BUFFET. I always love the choices they have, from the somosas to the chicken and lamb dishes to the weird veggie dishes that I would never order, but on a buffet? Scoop me two or three helpings! When I am here for dinner, my two favorites are the palak paneer and the channa masala. And, of course, garlic naan. Order the masala tea, too. On a cold night, it is the perfect way to warm up! Service: I always feel like the staff doesn't actually want me in their restaurant, which is weird. I am not alone in this feeling, as many of my friends have said the same. I have eaten Indian food from London to New York and this little nugget of a restaurant hits the spot! The staff are friendly and informative. I was expecting the quality to be lacking due to no competition in the town but that's not the case at all. I live in Lincoln Nebraska but am from London. We have five India restaurants in Lincoln and this one was better than all five. Only gripe was they did not have mulligatawny soup, I've never seen an Indian restaurant without it. Just make sure if you go on a dinner date for two do not order the Palace feast for 2, it's massive and feeds 4 people. Lawrence's main Indian restaurant, and a good one, at that. Ambiance - Not amazing, but pretty good. I especially like their current Christmas decorations; a bit gaudy but cheerful! It's a bit dark inside, kind of austere, but has some colorful art. There's also a backroom if you want to reserve some space for a larger group. Service - Iffy. 7 out of 10 times it's just fine. When it's not good, it's slow. Drinks - Masala tea is tasty of course (and offered as part of the lunch buffet! Chai, if you're unfamiliar), as is the mango lassi (like a mango smoothie). Food, of course! - If you are not well-acquainted with Indian food, the lunchtime buffet is a great place to start. It usually features vats of chicken tikka masala, which is I assume their most popular dish, tandoori chicken, rice, nan, a few fried appetizers, several other entrees and several vegetarian options. Also sauces and salad bits on the side, and usually kheer (rice pudding) or golub jamun (like little syrupy donuts). It's around $11, I believe. I'm a midwestern girl - I honestly don't know what tastes "authentic," but I've been to about 8 Indian restaurants and know what's tasty to me :) They usually start you off with papdums, which, I think I'm finally taking a liking to. For entrees, of course I like the chicken tikka masala, other favorites include the rogan josh (lamb), 56 chicken (or it could be 57? has a sweeter sauce), and the vegetable korma. Get some nan (the pashawary is good for eating straight, like an appetizer) for dipping in your sauce and you're good to go! Got the assorted bread basket once, and honestly like nan the best. Recently tried the non-vegetarian appetizer plate and liked that a lot, though it's pretty meaty, which is a bit heavy as an appetizer. Most dishes run ~%12, and the nan is ~$3 for two large pieces. Dessert - Love the golub jamun; if you order it in the evening, it's usually hot. But, one of my favorite, soul-soothing dishes at Indian Palace is the kheer. I've never had a bad meal here and they have a great selection of vegetarian options. Pricing is reasonable and the lunch buffet is great (although they always seem to run out of naan). The buffet has the typical standbys of rice, pakoras, along with some chicken and vegetable dishes as well as salad and dessert. First time diners should check the buffet first so they can sample the variety here. Dinner is always the regular menu. Wandered in from a thunderstorm rainburst and felt warmed and welcomed instantly. A lovely atmosphere, just between casual and romantic, with big comfy booths. The vegetarian thali was served PIPING hot (bonus star for that!) and hearty. I could not finish it, though it was tasty enough to try. The chutneys and sauces and pickles all seemed housemade and very flavorful. A few days later I was looking for food and tried to come here, but my timing was off and they were closed. I'm visiting from California and I've never really had Indian food in Kansas before, so I had zero expectations. My sister was going on about how good this place was and I was really craving some Indian so we came here. Our party of about 8 people walked in during lunch on a sunday afternoon. There was a buffet (which usually makes me weary because I'd rather not limit myself to what's on the buffet table), but to my surprise we were also given the option of ordering from the menu! This was great because my family had never tried Indian food before and I personally wouldn't spend money of a buffet if I wasn't even sure if I liked the food. So we all sit down (immediately) and the server takes our drink orders--we all had mango lassi which was delicious. Most of our table had to order the food mild or not spicy at all and when it came it was just right for everyone. There have been places where they seem to disregard this request, so I was happy about that. Overall, the food was pretty good and they had great service. Their menu is a little bit pricey but if you know what you ordering it could probably be the cheapest restaurant and Lawrence. Make sure you and your friend or significant other pick something that you both like and just order one dish that one dish is probably enough for four people. Just tell them to add extra rice. There Mango Lassie is one of the best I have ever tried. They have the best customer service around. I have been there multiple times and every time was better than the other. Their service takes a bit probably around 30 minutes or so for you to get your food. But for how good it is I'm not surprised it's not longer. I love this place :) read more

An hour for delivery estimate is understandable, it is, esp. if they are making it fresh. However, when that hour turns into TWO HOURS it's ridiculous. It's a Tuesday night, and they're 2 miles away. 90 minutes after I placed my order they called me to tell me it was going to be late. Because maybe I hadn't noticed? They did not, however, offer any sort of compensation for their incompetence. By the time our order arrived, 2 hours and 15 minutes after it was placed, my guests had given up and gone out to eat. Without me. Because I had to answer the door. Again, no compensation or explanation offered. But I was told to "have a nice night," so. Fantastic. Best Indian food in this town. Go for the lunch buffet. Great selection for a reasonable price.

Don't even try to order delivery from here. It'll take 2 hours and they'll call you multiple times asking for directions. Otherwise, the food is really good. Get the lunch buffet. The service isn't the best, but that stems from them focusing on cooking really good food instead. I'm getting hungry just thinking of it lol. read more

This place cannot control their delivery's. Place was crowded I get it, but the issue was they couldn't tel anyone how much longer their order would be. I waited an hour for a delivery and finally cancelled it because they continued to rudely tell me 5 more minutes since I arrived. Multiple other drivers left as well. It's a shame we cannot get good Indian delivered efficiently as Cosmos across town is also brutal with this. read more

My fiance and I love coming here, especially for the lunch buffet. We also order quite a bit of carry-out from here, and it's always amazing. The only reason I didn't give the full five is that, occasionally, the staff will be sitting and talking with friends about their drunken hookups last night, (DUDE, BRO) and then try to act like super polite young gentlemen while they ring you up. Hey, I get it, but it's probably best to keep those talks to a whisper, rather than a very Broseph yell, especially when families and young kids are eating there. read more

Service seems a little better than in the past. The buffet is a little pricey, but the variety of dishes has increased in the past couple of months. They do need to refresh dishes a little more frequently though. If you have time for a leisurely lunch, this is a good place;however if you have a tight schedule you might not get to try some of the more popular dishes because it takes them A while to bring out more food. read more

Stopped in to this little beauty based on stumbling across it on Lawrence Originals website - and it was full of win! The staff is super friendly and attentive, and were efficient during a moderately busy day. The five stars, though, come from every item I ordered being absolutely fantastic. I travel a lot for work, and love Indian food - and this was the best I've come across. The samosas are great, the naan is great, the flat crispy bread is great. They cooked my Chicken Bombay to "medium" spicy and it was spot on. It. Was. Amazing. I took the leftovers back to my hotel and ended up finishing it all, cold, because it was that great. read more

This review took me far too long to get done. Anyway, India Palace is lovely for what it is. I know that actual homemade Indian food tastes a bit different (or maybe that's just my tastebuds), but India Palace is still pretty great. Since I'm not a big meat eater (not completely vegan or veggie, just don't have much of a taste for meat), it's harder for me to find places that have a section of their menu dedicated to people who don't feel like meat. Although it's a small section, it's still decent and has good choices (and really, I'm just here trying to get my Korma feels sated.) Speaking of the Korma (or Kurma, depending on how you feel like spelling it), it's pretty darn good. Definitely, some of my favourite Korma bought from a takeout or restaurant type of place. I wouldn't say it was the best, but it's definitely good. The Aloo Korma is pretty decent especially good if you're a fan of potatoes much like myself. I would say that I'm a bit let down on the extras that I order typically from places like this. Their Naan is pretty subpar in comparison to what I've had previously and their Kheer is decent, but definitely lacks a certain something that makes me want to order it again. All in all, it's a decent place with decent food and a decent price considering how much you get. read more
