I've had the biryani and butter chicken here. Both were delicious. The biryani is flavorful, spicy and the chicken is so tender and juicy. The butter chicken is also amazing. I could eat several of them. I really like this place. It's my go-to for Indian food in Lawrence. read more

I bought a groupon for 3 meals for 2 here and the first time I went in to redeem one, the person working the register had no idea how to process the transaction. She had to call the manager in from home and I ate while waiting for her to arrive. I ended up having to pay the difference even though everything I ordered was in the parameters of the Groupon deal. Came back a 2nd time to redeem the same Groupon and there was a sign next to the register indicating drinks were no longer included in the deal, even though it did the time before, and was supposed to per the Groupon. So why even bother having the deal if you won't honor it? The owner was there this time and acted like I was a huge pain, even saying they would not be doing Groupons in the future. I had to pay above the Groupon price again, so I'm pretty sure I ended up not really even getting a discount. This place is such a nightmare I never even redeemed the last meal. Cosmos Indian Store is, well, a store. But not just a store because it's also a restaurant with some of the best home-style Indian food in Lawrence. I'm not going to lie, it's not the most charming place I've ever eaten but it's lack of charm loops around back to being charming. You go in and it's a mishmash of specialty grocer and adhoc restaurant. The dining area is at the front of the store and marked by taped lines on the floor and furnished with folding tables and chairs, a small beverage fridge whirs along the wall next to the tables and the menu is posted on the wall over the register (they're due to have take away menus delivered shortly). I've been 3 times and enjoyed everything I've tried. The samosas in particular are delicious and massive, bigger than my fist. The chicken biryani is also wonderful; fragrant and full of spice with large chunks of meat. While your food is being prepared, feel free to browse the grocery section. There is a condiment cart at the dining area, try a few of the different sauces (I like the straight "red chili"). The folding chairs are surprisingly sturdy but the table maybe a bit cramped if you're eating with another person. I'm rounding up here because Cosmos does have a good selection of spices and Indian ingredients that are otherwise unavailable in Lawrence. Spices are available in large quantities for very reasonable prices. The challenge that this place seems to have is in also trying to operate a cafe from inside the store. I've eaten there a couple of times. One time I got hot chai and samosas. The chai was very good and the samosas were okay, but clearly reheated, which there isn't much excuse for. When I went back recently the experience was much more mixed. I ordered chai and was given cold, blended (frothy) chai. As far as I know, cold chai isn't a "thing", and it certainly wasn't what I expected. The vegetable korma was, as another reviewer indicated, completely uneatable. It was grey, smelled and sour and oniony and was a lumpy, gritty texture. I was really shocked that that I was served it. I exchanged it for chana masala, which I never do. I waited almost 20 minutes for the chana masala, which I'm sure was just reheated, and should not have taken nearly that long. I was in a hurry at that point, and I has told the boy who took my order as much, but it didn't hurry things up. When I ate the chana masala later, it was pretty delicious. unfortunately, I had to eat it without the dried out rice and "naan" (for all the world I think it was packaged pita bread) that my meal had originally come with, because they didn't pack those up for me when I left... read more

Worst Indian food I've ever eaten. I ordered the vegetable pakora. It was so hard and over cooked my jaw hurt from chewing it. The aloo gobi was "edible." The naan was prepackaged. And everything was served in disposable ware. Had to ask 3 times for water. Don't waste your time or money. read more

THIS. PLACE. IS. AMAZING. I went to grab some chai on rainy afternoon and noticed that they had expanded and improved their menu. Woot! I tried the chicken biryani and (oh my god) it has to be the most moist, spicy and flavorful biryani I have every had. I would recommend this place 100%. Cosmos Indian Store has an online presence at http://www.indianonlinegrocery.com/. I placed an order with next day shipping. The order did not ship for 3 business days. After I contacted them about this, the order was shipped. I received half the order 3 days later. I contacted them again and I finally got the other half of the order. I am still waiting for my refund for next day shipping. The store in Kansas might be awesome... but stay away from the website. The only thing they are very prompt about is responding to email!! read more

Let's just say, NEVER AGAIN! We had a very bizarre and awful experience. My husband and I were shopping with our 9 year old daughter and happened to see this place. The reason we went in was because we saw a sign that said $5 henna tattoos and my daughter really wanted one. We went in and walked up to a lady who appeared to be either the owner or the manager. There was a young girl in front of us telling this lady she wanted to apply for a job. The lady told her to wait while she attended to me. I asked her about the tattoos and she told us to walk over to a table and pick out which design my daughter wanted. A few minutes later, this lady, along with the young girl, came up to us and asked if we picked out the design. She then showed this young girl where the paint was on the table and told her to get started. The owner then disappeared into the back kitchen. I was thinking how bizarre is this. This girl just asked to apply for a job and now she is doing my daughter's tattoo. She was clearly having a hard time getting the paint out of the tube and looked a bit nervous. I asked her if she has done this before and she said no but that she was a good drawer. What? I'm a good drawer too but I wouldn't know the first thing about giving someone a tattoo. I asked if she was applying for a job here and she told me yes, and that doing this tattoo was her interview, and that if she got the job she wouldn't just be doing the tattoos but other jobs around the restaurant as well. WHAT? So you're using my daughter as your guinea pig? And where is the owner so she can observe and watch you while you are doing this? I sat there dumb-founded. But I let her proceed. After my daughter's tattoo was finished the owner was still no where in sight. So I walked up to another young girl behind the register and told her my daughter's tattoo was finished and where was the owner so she could come look at it. She walked into the back in the kitchen. We waited. And waited. And waited. While we waited there was another family that had been there waiting for their food to come out, which took a very long time. When it finally came (only partially), there ended up being a hair in it that the customer pulled out. Gross! So, the young girl from the register, after delivering food to this family, went back to her register. I asked again where the owner was. She didn't even answer the question and just went on to explain that we need to pay $5 and that the tattoo should last a couple of weeks. What? I was seriously wondering where the freakin' Bloopers hidden camera was. This was the absolute worst service I have ever seen. We went ahead and paid for the $5 tattoo that really was not very good and left. I seriously suggest that you avoid this place. I would not trust the people nor the food. read more

The wife and I have been trying to have an Indian meal here in Kansas. This was an UTTER FAIL. We went on Sunday June 1st 2013. The girl at the counter did not know the menu nor she did not know how to use the register. A couple ordered before us, 2 main entres and a side and a drink. The cashier took the order back to the kitchen and then took our order. We got 3 entres, a side of paratha, a large iced chai, and an iced tea. I thought we might be waiting a bit, but asked a time for our order. She said 10 to 20 minutes. 25 minutes later I got a small iced chai...the girl who brought it assured me it was the large. 10 minutes later she started bringing our food out. The couple who ordered before us did not have their food yet! My wife's tea was sweetened, the cashier said they did not have unsweetened tea. We did not get our side order of paratha. When we were able to get the cashier's attention, she assured us that it was on our plates. It was not. That was the NAAN that comes with each entre. The meals were okay. We got a pepper chicken, Korma, and another chicken order. All were quite spicy. The naan was more like a tortilla than the naan I'm used to. We did convince the cashier that we did not get our side order of paratha. The menu said you got 3 pieces, she brought us out 2, and they were not good. Menu said they were going to be flaky, nope they were not. As we were leaving, the couple that ordered before us still did not have their food. read more

Worst online purchase experience ever! This company is criminal at worst and dishonest at best. I ordered 5 bottles of an online Ayurvedic supplements from them. They shipped me 3 bottles instead of 5, but they charged me for all 5!!! The only three bottles they did send me had expired 3-6 months BEFORE I even placed the order. I tried contacting them on numerous occasions and was unable to reach anyone or get my call returned. My credit card company and Bank of America has now put them on their list of disputed/distrusted vendors and is red-flagging any disputed purchases made with them. Cosmos Indian Store, this is not how you do business! I am concerned about anyone else who may unknowingly ingest your expired products or who do not check their credit card statements and are ripped off by you. Buyer beware!!!!!!
