The vegetarian menu is impressive. I have never experienced feeling a "euphoric high" from eating before, but their samosa with that amazing trio of chutney is off the top! We had the paneer tikka masala and Benghan Bharta with rice and garlic naan, and we thought we were going to be full for the rest of the week! It was an astounding amount of food., but the quality was Extraordinary and fragrant and perfect. This was opening night of our Anniversary weekend, and we are so grateful that we got to experience this amazing and delicious meal. We were just passing through the Lawrence area and got take-out from India Palace. Probably one of the better Indian restaurants I've been to. I prefer the Punjabi Northern India regional food. The samosas, butter chicken, vegetable biryani, and chicken tikka tandoori were all fantastic. read more

Each roti is cut in to 4 pieces (good size).The taste was really good, please do mention your spice level during the order. I was very pleased with the paneer tikka masala -- it was spicier than I am used to for tikka masala and I enjoyed the flavor very much. Portion sizes are quite large, so I think you could get two meals out of a single order of curry. The aloo naan was great as well. Reasonable prices, cozy atmosphere, good food... I order takeout from here way too often. We love the food. I gave 3 stars because the service is so unreliable. It's pretty common to wait 30+ minutes after when your food should be ready. They've made it obvious more than once that they didn't even start prepping my order until I got there. But... I keep going back because the food really is that good. read more

This is a very quaint, lovely restaurant tucked away on a side street in Lawrence, KS. The atmosphere is so pleasant and our server was delightful. He was very helpful with suggestions and guidance. The menu was extensive and they had all sorts of options for cuisine. I ordered tandoori chicken because, well, I love tandoori. However, I do not remember it being so spicy. This dish was almost too spicy for my tastes. It was also just a wee bit too dry. It sounds like a complaint but, gosh, it's really not. The meal was tasty but it was not great. I do have a weakness for Indian bread and Indian Palace did not disappoint. The bread was delicious and such good nan. I could have ordered another serving but didn't dare. The rice, the vegetables were delicious, too. I just wish the tandoori wasn't as spicy and so dry. The restaurant is easy to access. Parking might be more of a challenge during peak hours, though. We went on a Friday early afternoon so it was very easy to park. The restaurant is also beautifully decorated and everything was comfortable and inviting. I've been going here since the late 90's when it first opened. I moved away from Lawrence, KS in Feb. 2000. I lived in NYC for almost 20 years and San Francisco about a year. I have to say, even going to Indian row in NYC and experiencing so many Indian restaurants on the East Coast and around, this is one of my top favorites for Chicken Tikka Masala! Swaggat in KC is owned by relatives of this place, so the recipes are similar. The Globe in Topeka was once owned by a relative to these people, as well, so, again, the recipes are similar. I can't recall if it's the south or north style masala. Butter chicken at other restaurants is the equivalent of tikka masala here. The staff are lovely, helpful people who become like family when you are regulars. My twin daughters favorite food is Chicken Tikka Masala, so we eat here as often as the pocket book allows. For their third birthday, they were gifted by family a gift certificate for their favorite dish. This is how much they LOVE it! And usually they have suckers the girls ask for upon departing the restaurant. Well done, India Palace! We LOVE YOU!!! Oh and we LOVE the plain naan plus chai tea, as well! Homemade chai! After my semi successful wisdom tooth extraction three days ago, I'm resigned to eating soft foods for about a week. By "soft" I mean nursing home cookin'. After all, I can only open my mouth about an inch. I'm a fair cook but I need to be waited on when in this state of ugliness. Sadly lacking a personal cook, this has meant three days of oatmeal shakes made with almond milk and stevia root, which allows for the sweet craving to be fulfilled, yet I am craving savory food like it's nobody's business. Are wisdom teeth also known as the sweet tooth? I don't have all four anymore! I'm sick of sweet. I've tried whipping up some soups but then forget that the chewy bits are inevitable (posole!), so I end up slurping down the broth and being perpetually hungry. This is no doubt good for my figure, but today I was cranky because I didn't have enough energy to have a good workout. I know... I know. I'm so difficult. At 5pm, when faced with just a blender and no energy to speak of, cabin fever won out over vanity. I decided to head out to Lawrence with the K for dinner before band practice. I figured Indian would be a safe bet for at least a few tablespoons of food that packed a punch. And saag dishes are a comfort food for me, even though I knew I'd probably get about three spoonfuls in before giving up. If it's "all about the food," India Palace gets a solid three stars. My only quip is that when I say I want food "Indian hot" that means, Indian hot. Not white girl hot. Just saying. It's a tasty respectable dish here. But. This isn't just about the food because hello, cranky girl with a hunger problem in the hizzouse. You know how most reviews make mention of the overbearing service one receives at Indian restaurants? Well, perhaps the staff at India Palace took this to heart because holy Shiva did the service SUCK here this evening. I mean from the moment we walked in the door and were forced to hover at the host stand while we were passed over from person to person to seat us. I could overlook that, but here's the Suck Tally: -we had to ask for them to take our order. After waiting 10 minutes. The K is a lot nicer than me when it comes to this, but I get INSANELY antsy when I'm sitting there waiting to order. We asked and then again were put off to someone else who came over to MAKE SURE we needed to order before telling us she'd be right back. She never came back. Someone else took our order. We never saw him again. -we had to flag down yet another wait person (there were three in total, which I feel is a fair amount of staff given the small space) for the drinks we ordered after 10 minutes of sitting there. I refer you to the first sentence of this review. Think I could wait another second before having my first sip of wine of the (very stressful and pain filled) week? Think again. -yes, I'm cranky, it's been established. But we had to ask for napkins two more times. I'm Italian American. I horde napkins. Most Italian Americans horde napkins in their purses, pockets and computer bags. I just put on a jacket that I haven't worn in years. In the pockets: almost disintegrated napkins. Don't look in my glove compartment. I could wipe up an oil spill with the amount of napkins in there. When I ask for napkins, I mean business! -our food arrived. Hallelujah! Wait a minute, 10.95 for that small dish? Not that I'd want a larger portion, even on a good day. In New York's Indian row, that same dish would have been 5.95, so I don't want to hear anyone bitching about how expensive New York is. Fine, I get that we're not in New York. But 10.95?? Fora small dish of spinach, spices and cubes of cheese. REALLY??? (for the record, I don't use "really?" all that often. It's just super warranted here). Due to my inability to eat more than 1/4 of the portion, I had to take my food to go. It should be noted that the K who has the stomach size of a (very masculine) bird actually consumed his entire entree (clean plate club FTW). So... for barometric purposes here... Let it be known I normally can eat that bitch under the table!!!! Anyway, we asked for my food to go and to pay and -no joke- after a significant pause the waitress said, "I can bring you a to-go box but please just go up front to pay. We're SWAMPED here." "Swamped?" CUE THE MOTHERFUCKING CRICKETS because the swamp was destroyed by Katrina and only the strong have survived. I will most likely never return here, unless my entire jaw is taken out (and I'm forced to live out the rest of my life in Lawrence because this is the only Indian restaurant in town). The management is unwilling to listen to customers concerns. We have asked for mild dishes and the last 3 orders we have had to throw away after 2 bites, being very hot for our tastes. When I called to voice my concerns the chef said he has been making the dishes for 30 years and they are mild, I would hate to see Med or hot! After being dependable customers since the Lawrence restaurant opened and the Overland Park restaurant before that we will No longer be customers. read more

First visit tonight for take-out. Their food tasted great, I ordered the butter chicken, saag paneer, and lamb briyani. Everything was hot and delicious. The portion sizes were great for the price we paid. The only downside was the wait time, I didn't know since it was our first visit but they said if they say 45 mins that actually means about 1 hour and 30 mins on weekends. When I got there it was 45 mins but it was busy and I had to wait another 45 mins in the restaurant. I would recommend to call before you leave your place to confirm wait time. read more

If you love great Indian food no matter what, you'll love India Palace. If you abhor spotty service, I'd recommend you keep on Yelping your way to another spot. Working around the corner from India Palace for years turned me into a fan who'd grow weak in the knees every time I'd smell that delicious curry smell wafting through the streets of Downtown Lawrence. This is the place that got me officially into Indian food, and I'm salivating just writing this review. In fact I missed this place so much during my five months abroad that I went to every Indian restaurant I could find in Europe in hopes of replicating it. It really depends on the time of year for what sounds best, but to me, I have this strong affinity for the lamb tikka masala around the fall. It's one of my favorite meals in all of Lawrence. Now that being said, I have had some MAJOR misses here with service. One time, we went to the host stand and stood there for 5-6 minutes without being helped. We ended up seating ourselves which didn't endear us to the staff and they just didn't serve us so we left. I've also had valid coupons not honored here, a friend judged for leaving uneaten food on their buffet plate, and on and on. I've also had experiences where the staff was extremely friendly and on the ball. Sort of depends on when you go. I decided years ago that the best solution to get my fix without dealing with the hit or miss service would be to call it in and get it carryout. If that means I'm eating it in my car, I'm eating it in my damn car! Love this place, and wish I could have access to it more now that I'm living in KC. read more

India Palace is probably the best Indian food in Lawrence, Kansas, complete with a half vegetarian all you can eat lunch buffet. I can't really recall or identify what dishes were on my plate during this particular visit: despite the number times I've had Indian food and India palace, exactly what is what escapes me during the all you can eat madness. Mix those bad boys up with the rice and you're talking a vegetarian meal that packs more flavor than 68% of middle class American family's home cooking. The naan is great here, and the mango lassi is tasty, even for someone like me who distrusts sweet drinks. Something very disappointing is that one can never guess which vegetarian dish will be available in the all you can eat buffet. India Palace doesn't do its black lentils very well, but excels whenever mixed vegetables are involved. Dishes with excessive amounts of cabbage also make me sad. The staff working at India Palace are incredibly nice. I've probably been to India Palace double digit times and I don't live in Lawrence anymore. It's just a great place for lunch! read more

The food and service at India Palace were both nice enough, but neither one quite felt memorable. The meat was tender and had a good flavor and the naan was soft yet just a little crispy. There was little about the food that really stuck out to me -- it was completely serviceable but never transcended delicious territory. The ambiance was pretty good, with pleasant lighting. We were seated close to the door on a cold night and right across from a fairly noisy group. It wasn't anything bad enough to request moving for, but perhaps strange we weren't seated in more available booth with more privacy. The service was acceptable, being neither dismissive nor welcoming. I would certainly return to India Palace and in fact had a wonderful time there, but much of that was for reasons unrelated to the restaurant. In many ways it's a blank slate for a time out on the town -- it allows you a place to go for a lovely conversation with a date or friends. I don't feel necessarily drawn back to the Palace, though entirely out of apathy than for any other reason; I'm sure I'll return at some point when I crave Indian food. When I first moved to lawrence for school, everyone kept insisting that I go here. So I finally went the other day (for the buffet of course haha) and WOW!!!! Was really impressed. A little on the pricier side but SO worth it. Now every time I walk anywhere near this place, especially during lunch time, I catch a whiff of whatever amazingness is cooking. Just great. I don't really know anything about Indian food, but I like what they serve at India Palace. There are a number of dishes which are well-prepared on the lunch buffet. Whenever I go there everything seems quite fresh and indulgent. The buffet comes with help-yourself chai tea. The place can get very busy at lunch and they often have a hard time seating people quickly. The entrance can be very awkward when busy because there is nowhere to stand. The interior is very worn and in dire need of a redo. It seems like they really skimp overall on ambiance although the main dining room in the east is almost pleasant. My main gripe is the price. I believe it costs something like $12 for the buffet which seems a little high when you consider how worn-out the location is and the way patrons are crammed into the place like cattle. read more

I don't know which region of India this restaurant represents but it "dry". One of the greatest parts of what we would call Indian is the sauce that soaks so amazingly into the basmati rice. We were waiting to be seated and didn't want the empty booth by the door because as you were waiting you are all over that table. We would have had everyone's butts or purses at our table. We had them deliver food to our home. I ordered the Chicken Bombay medium heat. The chicken was very tender and the sauce is amazing and I love the small chunks of ginger, not too overpowering. My husband ordered the Lamb Tikka Masala mild heat and I tried it and took most of his! I loved the creaminess and hint of tomato flavor while the lamb melted in my mouth!
