I've eaten Indian food in countless places, and I've never found better. Weird considering it's in the middle of the mid west, no? Decor is pretty much what you usually run into at an Indian restaurant: ornate, rich colors, and carpet. The food is always fresh, well cooked, and delicious. Every dish tastes different and is recognizable, unlike at some other Indian places. Some favorites are the shrimp vindaloo (hottttt!!) and the saag paneer. My friend is obsessed with the butter chicken. She's actually never eaten anything else there she claims it is so good. That's dedication! The only reason they get 4 stars is that the service is quite slow. Like, expect to be there for a while. I'm more used to this pace of eating now that I'm in Mexico, but seriously it's really slow. India Palace is my favorite resaurant in Lawrence. The lunch buffet is great because you can try lots of things, but in my opinion you can't go wrong with pretty much anything on the menu. At night, the restaurant has intimate lighting and would make a nice date (assuming you brush your teeth afterwards :P ). My only complaint would be that it's a tad pricey, and I wish the menu had more variety. Also, they deliver! read more

This was our first time, and overall the food was good. If you're looking for Indian food in town, you will be satisfied here. Unfortunately, while we were there the owner's son and another employee's daughter spent most of the time running through the restaurant and diving into booths. This was accompanied by loud videos on her phone and lots of loud laughing. They even sat with two ladies in another booth uninvited. It really disrupted what could have been a nice atmosphere and dinner experience. To their credit, I think the owners and staff care, they just didn't control it very well. Was a bit disappointed! I have gotten take out here several time years ago (about 4-5yrs) and haven't been since. We decided to go last night and it was less then great! Sigh, they no longer have the lemon rice which is a huge favorite. The tiki masala was eh... and the naan has so much garlic on it it was almost bitter! When we first walked in and up to the register (there's a sign We Will Seat You) we stood there... for a very long time... so log hat we were ready to leave without even being noticed! One of us actually walked over by the kitchen and asked if they were open for dinner.. we were promptly seated at that point. I had a Pepsi and when I got my refill, I received coke. Not a huge deal to me but for someone who may not like one over the other or perhaps may even have an allergy of some sort, not a good thing. We were even asked what we had! Go for the lunch buffet, tasty, worth it. We recently went during the dinner hour (a friday). It took a long time to get our orders taken, and the food came out slow. The Good: A longtime Lawrence establishment which is definitely worth visiting. I'm a vegetarian and love their Sahai Paneer Korma, a tiki masala like sauce (warm creamy tomato based) with raisins and cheese with plenty of saffron rice. I always order paneer naan. And sometimes a delicious coconut soup. Once in a while we treat ourselves the lunch buffet, but the price is pretty exorbitant, around 13.00 per person, and since you don't get to take leftovers I never feel like I've managed to tuck away $13.00 worth of food in one sitting. The Bad: The decor is a bit dive and service can be slow but the food is excellent. I'm a Lawrence native and frequent the restaurant. They also offer pick up. They seem to habitually lose their liquor license, so you can never expect to have a beer, but on occasion you can. read more

When I'm in Lawrence I eat at India Palace all the time. Unfortunately, it has spoiled me as far as Indian food is concerned. I have yet to find a place on the East Coast that serves comparable Indian food. Although expensive, the food is always great (especially during the dinner hours when each meal is made to order as opposed to buffet style). My favorite is Chicken Jafreezi or Chicken Biryani (extra spicy of course!). The vegetable korma, mutter paneer, and saag paneer are the best vegetarian dishes. On the downside service tends to be sub-par - especially when it's busy. Although friendly, it seems the waitstaff is overwhelmed and understaffed. To-go order and delivery times can be EXTREMELY long. The host (Ngawang) is very friendly. I would highly recommend India Palace and go every time I get a chance read more

Ordered online for delivery. Instead of getting the chicken saag I ordered, I got an entree with chickpeas in it. This was not an issue of not being heard correctly since the order placed online through Menufy clearly said chicken. I called India Palace to tell them about the error, but the person who picked up the phone did not speak English well. He said he would have someone call me back. Of course, no one called. Menufy had a follow-up email to ask about service. I told them I didn't get what I ordered. They said they would contact India Palace. I don't think they did. So, not only did I not get the correct order, I paid $2 more than I should have since vegetarian dishes are less expensive. India Palace was the first Indian Food place I ever ate at. when I went back recently, not a whole lot has changed. the food is consistent and the place looks almost exactly the same. it wasn't until I moved the KC and found out that Indian food is supposed to have spices in it that i realized how americanized and watered down this place actually was. it doesn't bother me though, because i still had a great meal, buffet is always full and delicious, but my palate now has expanded to more authentic Indian Food, that has spice and heat in it. it's also a tad more expensive than it's KC brothers and sisters. thats ok too. come here for a great, filling meal. read more

Not the best Indian I've ever had (that's in London), but I enjoy going here for dinner. Chicken korma, vegetable korma, and saag paneer are all good. I think the nan bread is really good. My experience with the service has been fine. All the waiters I've had have been very pleasant and helpful. I eat dinner there about 2-3 weekends per month and have never had a bad experience. It saddens me to slap India Palace with 2 stars. I've been there many, many times over the years and, overall, good to fair experiences outweigh the bad. However, the good experiences have been mysteriously missing for quite some time. Where have they gone?! If I were reviewing based on my experience last night, they would score only 1/2 a star. What's worse, the prices have steadily increased as the quality has marched 180 degrees the other direction. Here's the lowdown on last night's dining demons: -IP management feels, for some reason, that they need 4 or 5 fewer staff members than they actually do. The poor souls that pick up the slack find themselves running around like mad (usually away from the table as you try to wave them down). Side note: I learned from a previous employee a few years ago that six 10 or 12 hour days were not uncommon. -Our table had a few crusty little morsels left from the previous party. -B/c of the 1st bullet above, we waited for an extended time to place our order (meanwhile taking stock of the raised prices). -The food took an inordinate amount of time to emerge from the kitchen. I couldn't see back there, but wouldn't be surprised to learn that the kitchen staff suffers from the same lack of representation that plagues the front of the house. -When the order was finally delivered, two items were missing: a tray of chutneys and a mango lassi. The former was delivered after two subsequent requests. It was quite a chore to flag down staff each time. Note that cooking is not required for the chutneys as they are pre-prepared! The lassi was forgotten in the throws of our disappointment, but, rest assured, we were reminded of it when we received our bill! They did take it off after I reminded them it was absent from the meal. Speaking of the bill (skipping ahead for a moment), the guy at the register handed us the wrong one when we walked up there. No doubt he was so overworked that every bill looked the same to him! -The food? Oh yes, the food. Papadums were stale. Vggie korma was bland (yes, bland!). They used to add raisins to the korma. It was a nice sweet touch, but they were unfortunately absent last night. It may be an economy thing, I don't know. Shrimp jalfrezi was pretty good. Rice was OK. Nan was nothing spectacular. The water was Lawrence tap, so that's about the best I can say for it. The lassi sounded good. -There has always been confusion about how to pay at IP. Do you wait at the table or walk up to the register? No one really knows. Don't listen if someone tries to act learned in this department. They are fakers. The confusion is real, and you must deal with it. -My wife was disappointed to find the women's restroom out of order. She used the men's and came out practically screaming. I'm told the dirt and grime was something to behold. Apparently the faucet handles were long broken and had been replaced with wine bottle corks (not in a cute, clever designer sort of way). Sigh. The days of India Palace standing as a desired Lawrence restaurant are gone. I wish it weren't so. RIP. read more

GO ACROSS THE STREET TO BAYLEAF, THE BEST INDIAN RESTAURANT IN 100 MILES. Seriously, Bayleaf has the most fantastic food, atmosphere and service in Lawrence. If other specialty restaurants in Lawrence put half as much energy into making great food, people would come from Kansas City just to eat in Lawrence. When my husband was in college, he used to joke that he survived for years eating nothing but "orange," since his diet consisted entirely of India Palace's Chicken Tikka Masala and the occasional late night Tryyaki run. Twelve years since his original encounter with this place, neither he nor I have encountered better Indian food. Anywhere. And we eat Indian every time we travel. This place is simply unbeatable, and so addictive that I can keep eating it day after day. Though the lunch buffet is always a delectable spread, I prefer going for dinner. The dishes seem richer, probably because each portion is made fresh. My go-to meal consists of coconut soup, chicken tikka masala, and raita to dip my pudina (mint and spices) nan in. I also enjoy a hot cup of masala chai tea. It's creamy and well-spiced with just the right amount of sugar. I'd eat this food if it were offered to me in the back alley, so I couldn't care less about service and ambiance. However, India Palace succeeds there, too. Some of the waiters have been there for years, and they'll remember you if you come often. They're great guys to get to know. It's quieter and dimly lit at dinner, great for a date. At lunch you can enjoy eavesdropping on the tables filled with KU professors engaged in lively academic conversation. Give India Palace a shot; you won't be disappointed. read more

I lived in Lawrence 10 years ago, and it has taken that long to find a similarly good Indian restaurant. I was in Chicago for 7 years and could not find one as good as India Palace. Only after I moved to LA and searched for 4 years did I find a place that was as good. I still travel back to Lawrence to visit and eat here with my friends. The food is so amazing and the buffet is tops! I wish I still lived in Lawrence so I could get my weekly fix! LOL! You will absolutely love them! Great place to share food! The food comes in (pretty well portioned) bowls that you then serve onto your plate, so you can mix and try different things. Distance from Kansas to India- about 7,500 miles. Distance from my house to I Pal- about 1 mile. India Palace is super tasty. It's the only Indian restaurant in Lawrence, but that's ok, because it's so good we don't need another option. The Vegetable Korma is out of this world, tons of well cooked veggies served with paneer in a creamy sauce, and the nan is fantastic with or without garlic. The Saag Paneer is also a delicious dish of ghee-soaked spinach with some excellent Indian cheese. If you go for dinner, you can easily order an appetizer and a single entree to fill up two people. The lunch buffet is a great way to try new things, or to fill up on pakoras and samosas, but they have almost doubled the price of the buffet over the past five years, so it now reaches almost $11. The food is still great, and it's still worth a visit to I Pal, but this price increase is why they don't get the fifth star from me. The atmosphere is quiet, and the high backed booths make India Palace a great place to go on a date or to chat with friends. Indian food is always a crap shoot for the gluten free among us. I get nervous because describing an allergy through a language barrier can be dangerous. Thankfully the server we had realized she couldn't quite get the gist of what I was saying and asked for the GM who spoke much better English. In the end, I had no issues with contaminated food. Ordered for to-go this evening. Woman took the order over the phone, was struggling to find a pen, but it sounded like she took my order, eventually. When my wife came to pick it up (four items, which I sent in a text to my wife immediately after I ordered, same stuff we ALWAYS order), counter person recited the order from the receipt, which had chicken vindaloo instead of chicken bombay. Wife said "no, we ordered chicken bombay". Guy at the counter flatly said "I didn't take the order". No apology. No offer to make the correct thing or adjust the receipt for the dish we did not order. Nothing. Looks at her. She shows him the text I'd sent. He looks at her. My wife says "well, what IS chicken vindaloo??" He described the dish. Receipt indicated "hot" - she said "oh no, that's not good" and he quickly said "oh it's not that hot". She finally just said "okay fine, I guess" because she was confused and exasperated that he was completely non-committal and appeared completely unconcerned (she owns a business in town too, and knows how service when you mess up is SUPPOSED to work). Food that we did not order was I guess okay, not what we ordered or wanted. While we have always gotten our order done correctly in the past, we question whether we will return, given the extraordinarily poor response to the botched order. AND there is no way to contact them directly on their website to share the poor experience...I guess they just don't actually care. Period. read more

Absolutely, by far the best Indian restaurant in the area (all KC metro). We ate here almost once a week for years, enough to we got to know the staff. Interestingly many of them live in the same building with the restaurant. My husband loves the veggie korma. Its sweet, with cashews and raisins mixed in. I tend to have pakora, samosa, or soup and sometimes tandoori shrimp. I have never been disappointed in this place. They bring mango ice cream on your birthday. I highly recommend trying the masala tea and the mango lassi. Yummy! read more

I review only the lunch buffet on weekend. The selection is not as many as any Chinese buffets in town. There are plenty of good food. The naan bread is very delicious with a variety selection of curry. The grilled chicken is also good. The salad bar is okay but I am not a big fan of their salad dressings. The herbal milk tea (I am not sure between basil or mint they put) is great. This tea is my favorite. The service is okay but I do not expect much from a buffet. Even though this is an authentic food and they are delicious, their curry dishes are not great (compared to the Indian curry I had before). On the other hand, the tea is even better than what I had in New Delhi. read more
