Beware! I recommended this place to a neighbor who was very elderly and feeble. On the day he moved in his wallet was stolen and credit cards used. It had to be a staff person as no one else was allowed in that area. His relatives moved him out within months. Also, there was just a murder-suicide there of a couple living in Lantern Crest. My doctor's office is in there and there's never any parking, and have heard complaints from residents. The place is like "putting lipstick on a pig" - don't let its "lavish" outer appearance entrap you. read more

This is a 5 Star place. My Mother In Law lives in Independent Living at The Pointe in Lantern Cress. She loves it! It is really like a resort, and the Activities Director is excellent. Pet friendly, and a dog park on site. The staff are kind and caring. Victor is the best in sales. Front desk ladies are wonderful. The 1 star deduction is for the slow and complacent service in the restaurant. At the Pointe's restaurant, Terrazza, the food is excellent, but staff move slow and often forget to prep the tables with basics like water and glasses, silverware, etc. Once they seat you, they disappear and it can be quite a while to be able to ask for something like forgotten water or butter, etc. The buffets run out of food due to lack of staff watching and preparing. The Chef rarely (?never?) comes out to check on his tables. Bless the restaurant's staff's hearts, they could use a good manager that is present on the floor and a checklist for the table service. read more

As a musician i have had the opportunity to play music for the Residents at Lantern Crest The Ridge. Not only are the facilities first class but I have nothing but good things to say about the staff. From the front desk, the entertainment and the restaurant staff, there is real effort to be kind and courteous. They cater to the residents on a personal level and by name. My Saxophone And Guitar group has played at many other retirement facilities and we rate Lantern Crest at the top of the list. read more

My grandma has lived at Lantern Crest for the past four years and it has been nothing but perfect for her. She has been living with Parkinson's for over a decade and the staff is excellent when it comes to caring for her unique needs. Not only is she able to receive daily attention from the caregiving staff, she has also found a fantastic group of friends that keep her happy and engaged. She loves having time to socialize with other residents over poker games and I love that they offer memory and brain strengthening games for her to play too. The facilities are remarkable and it truly feels like my grandma is living in a resort! I've had the pleasure to visit Lantern Crest on a handful of occasions to visit one of my dear relatives and have to say that it definitely has a luxury resort feel. Upon walking into the building you are surrounded by picturesque mountains and the grounds are impeccable. I've also taken tours to view the apartments and community rooms. Absolutely beautiful! Pet friendly for all those dog lovers in San Diego:) And the food...The food is simply delicious! You cannot leave without dining at the classy Terrazza restaurant or the aviation themed Latitude 32 Bar/Grill. Sunday brunch is also nice to meet with family and friends. Staff not only left in droves, they were not replaced fast enough and therefore everything suffered. Response time to residents, ratio of caregivers to residents, follow through on required actions, etc. it seems to be on the upswing again, but I must add that I am a family member that is there almost every day. I wanted to write a review for years. Now that my mother has passed thought I should. She was living there from Jan 2013 to June of 2014. Yes it is a very beautiful place! A couple people on the staff were great. Med techs were always wonderful and caring. We moved mom up closer to where my brothers lived after I left Ca. to go home. The reason for only 2 stars is the facts that all of my mothers jewelry was stolen from her room. Every bit of it!!!!! Mom always locked her door. They even stole her wedding ring from off her bedside stand. The rest of her jewelry was hidden in a bottom drawer of her dresser. Under a bunch of towels. So it wasn't like you could just open the drawer and see it. No one ever needed to be in it. It was believed to be one of the maids. Soon after the robbery that maid quit. They knew who it was. They never did anything to help. Never handed over the video tape to the police to view who went in and out of moms room. At that point all I wanted to know was what area did she live in so I could go look at the pawn shops. Was never given any help. I was appalled at the lack of support from the management. They have you fill out a form stating what jewelry she had. But never say you need to get a Safe. That was all they could say after it was stolen was "well she should have had a safe!!!! It saddens me even more now that moms is gone and none of her jewelry was able to be handed down to grandkids or great grandkids. So just beware !!!! read more

Lantern Crest is a beautiful place. It has some very caring individuals. But they never seem to stay long. In the beginning it was great. But the longer our mother was there, the more we saw that things weren't being taken care of. It seems that the turn over in staff became a big concern. THEY DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH STAFF. Every time we would question about something they would be getting to it or taking care of it and it never seem to get done. There was no accountability for anything. Moms room became horribly urine soaked and stained obviously due to inadequate cleaning procedures and or toileting scheduling. Im sure if all you need is assisted living (3 meals and laundry) its there. But if you really need care. Dementia care, Alzheimer care, this it seems, is where they lack. The last month or so when I would visit Mom, she would be in the TV room or she would just be sitting in her room. We couldn't visit in her room because it was so filthy. And what happened to all the activities? So sad. For the amount we paid, mom should had much better care. We kept thinking it was going to get better and it just kept getting worse. read more

They have changed the cost of eating in the dining room. Instead of so many meals a month. Now it's x amount of dollars. When divided by the number of days in a month isn't enough meals. So the company keeps the people with out food for a few days per month. Plus if you do go on vacation the money doesn't roll to the next month. Words cannot describe how ill-equipped the assisted living section is (completely separate from independent living where they live and are treated like royalty.) My mother sadly passed away in their facility - and can you believe I found out she was gone from the assisted living director in the elevator in my way up to see my mom??? Now my father lives there and is quite unhappy at how little the (constantly changing) staff seem to care for him, which as only gotten worse as his health has declined (not to mention his depression after losing his wife of 50+ years.) They presented him with a huge bill to allegedly cover the additional care costs - only later I found out they were using this technique to get him to leave! So we are leaving and not looking back. My 91 year old father is being harassed and threatened by another resident of Lantern Crest, who actually attempted to force her way into his unit and has accused him of stealing from her and breaking into her unit. There have been four (4) incidents with this resident over a 3 week period. When discussing the situation with the Executive Director, I was informed that Lantern Crest is an "apartment complex" and there is nothing they can do to protect the security of my father, who by the way pays over $5,000 a month to live in an 800 sq ft unit. When I suggested our only recourse to protect our father would be to file a restraining order against this aggressive resident, I was told that is what we would need to do. This is a property that goes on lock down at 8pm at night and requires every resident to pull a cord in their bathroom 2 times per day so they know they are still alive, and they are required to be on a meal plan. That does not sound like a typical "apartment complex" to me??? We understand that this resident may have mental issues and probably doesn't belong in an "apartment complex" like this, and that she is vacating on October 31st. We simply asked that the family of this resident, as well as her caregiver, be told not to allow this woman to knock on my father's door and harass him. Its one thing if they should meet in a common area and he can get away from her, its another when she is purposely allowed to go to his unit, knock on his door try to force her way in and accuse and harass him about things he is not doing. Overall, Lantern Crest has been an enjoyable experience for my father. However, this issue has caused undo stress on a 91 year old man who simply wants to live in peace. I would think that "management" would try to protect and foster a secure safe environment for its residents. Apparently that is not the case at Lantern Crest. read more

I would just like to note how impressed I have been in my experiences with Lantern Crest. I have had the privilege of meeting some of the very kind, compassionate staff, including management personnel and they are beyond dedicated to their residents and the quality of care provided there. I have seen other facilities that house memory care, and assisted living that are not up to this standard. While there are new faces around, as to be expected, there are always the lovely familiar faces of staff that have been there since I first visited back in 2012. I can only wish that every person that has to move their loved one into a facility like Lantern Crest finds the same experience that I have. It was difficult to trust strangers with my Grandma, especially when she can't always speak for herself and you have no choice but to trust their judgement for her. I have not been disappointed. My parents moved here in Dec 2013 and were happy until March April 2014 when living and caregiver conditions deteriorated: incompetent management (Generations Program and Billing depts), frequent staff turnover in caregivers and many of whom demonstrated personalities and lack of procedure that indicated they were obviously not in the right field of employment. We did not have any medication issues but we did have missed doctor appointments due to the 'bus driver called in sick' or 'the van is broken'. We also did experience significant delay in assistance when we used the call button or called downstairs to the front desk for assistance. The food was not good, nor plentiful but residents could ask for a second helping...that would arrive - eventually. I echo the overflowing trashcans, poor housekeeping and limited laundry, some families washed their parents clothes. And finally, the several rounds of residents' quarantine due to rampant GI issues, that meant the whole building was on room confinement, including meals. We moved our parents to another community in Sept 2014, 10 months overall, 5 months too long. I will not recommend Lantern Crest to friends or strangers. I'm sorry I am compelled to place this review because this type of elder living community is such a critical need. I think Integral Senior Living should take a hard look at LC and invest in on-site oversight and process improvement efforts, beginning with an open forum meeting for feedback from both staff and families of the residents - without risk to the speaker. BUT I DO WANT TO RECOGNIZE ANGELA, MATT, CARISSA, DAMIEN AND SARAH (with the "sleeves") WHO WERE THE MOST CARING AND CONSIDERATE STAFF THAT COULD BE, and I'm confident you were instrumental in my parents surviving Lantern Crest - to you guys: bless you and we thank you. read more

My grandma, who is in her 90s, moved into this place when it opened in June 2012. We have consistently experienced problems with her meds, which aren't too involved, being given at the wrong time, not at all, or incompletely. The place is understaffed and several times she wasn't even taken to her meals because they were too busy to get her. We know other residents who moved out because their meds were goofed up repeatedly and they had lost confidence in the staff. Another moved because she couldn't stomach the food. They're on their third chef here and he's no better than the other two. Tonight I ordered a BLT sandwich for my grandma's dinner, with crispy bacon. I was surprised to find the bacon actually crispy, but then disappointed when I discovered they had precooked the bacon, frozen it, then microwaved it for her sandwich. The bacon was fully cooked but still partly frozen. A couple weeks ago I ran into a resident in the hall in her wheelchair, with her lap full of yogurt, granola bars and other snacks from the bistro room. When I asked how she was she snapped at me that she was starving. It's hard to fill up on meals here when the food is so unappetizing. Many residents' families bring in food to compensate for the problem. Also, we have complained many times about the understaffing issue and we just get lip service. They have as much help as they did when the place opened and only a few people lived here. Caregivers arrive in a sweat when it's time to bathe my grandma because they literally race from room to room for fear of being written up for not staying on schedule. All they care about is saving every nickel they can, all at the expense of the care and comfort of residents. If my grandma were not in her 90s we would probably move her, but as it is we're at the mercy of Lantern Crest. They call it luxury assisted living here, but it's a joke. What makes the place tolerable is some of the very nice people who work here, unfortunately none of them are in positions of authority. Beware. UPDATE: AFTER THIS REVIEW WAS POSTED LAST OCTOBER, WE WERE CALLED INTO KRISTIN'S OFFICE--SHE IS THE BIG CHEESE DIRECTOR-- AND REPEATEDLY TOLD WE NEEDED TO MOVE MY GRANDMA. WE ALSO GOT THE USUAL BALONEY ABOUT HOW THE CHEF IS WORKING ON THE MENU AND HOW THEY HAVE HIRED MORE PEOPLE. JOKE. THANK GOD THEY HAVE WONDERFUL STAFF LIKE DIANE, SUSAN, MACKENNA AND COURTNEY THERE. THIS PLACE IS ONLY A GOOD SOLUTION IF YOU DON'T ACTUALLY NEED ANY ASSISTANCE. My mom, who has Alzheimer's, has been at Lantern Crest almost since they opened. It is a beautiful facility. My brother, sister-in-law & I have seen it through many growing pains. Yes, there were staffing problems which were concerning. Several times we considered moving her, but she has been comfortable & happy there. I'm so grateful we "stuck it out" since we have seen a great improvement in all aspects. Mom is happier than ever. The staff is wonderful- - I would acknowledge them by name, but I would probably leave someone out! They do a lot of activities with the residents. There is a beauty shop and the meals are varied & healthy. I'm quite confident that the kinks are worked out and my family is happy (under the circumstances) that my mom has a beautiful, caring place to call home. read more

There are two buildings for Lantern Crest: The Ridge and The Pointe. The Pointe opened in December 2015. It is for Independent Living and Assisted Living 55+ adults. The building is very nice and the apartments all have a full kitchen and a washer and dryer. There are no outside garden areas for residents to enjoy. There is a theater with big screen, English Tea Room, large game and arts and crafts rooms, library with computers available, an exercise room with TV, miniature golf, and a hair salon. Small pets are allowed. The staff is friendly and helpful. Pricing is above average. The residents are also friendly and have organized numerous table games themselves. There are various exercise activities and outings planned by staff. The restaurant is large and nicely decorated; however, in my opinion, the food and service leave a lot to be desired. The wait time for food is unusually long; has been as long as 45 minutes. Much of the food is greasy and bland and there are a lot of cream sauces used. The presentation of the food is done nicely, but a disappointment for taste. Chicken is usually dry and meats are tough and overcooked. I hear numerous complaints from other residents but they do not like to write their complaints down for the Chef to consider even though a suggestion box is available. We have been advised that if enough complaints are made regarding one issue, then something can be done, otherwise, one complaint alone will not be of concern. In my opinion, every complaint should be of concern. My low score is based primarily on the numerous food issues. read more

For just over a year, mom & dad have experienced the evolution of this Lantern Crest community. Assisted Living Director Kristy Brown has been our shining star since her arrival. She leads with warmth & compassion, always with the residents first in mind. She leads & trains her team by focusing on continual improvement and identifying right staff fits. She successfully launched a revamp of the medication room service operation that made this important activity an accurate, well-oiled machine. This was a MAJOR improvement that was highly needed and since this change, stays on track consistently by re-evaluating meds room operational needs. GREAT JOB!!! A special recognition is deserved for the commendable help provided for my mother during my father's recent hospital stay. Outstanding care was provided by the Assisted Living & Generations teams. This gave mom a returned sense of security, safety, and improved wellbeing until my parents were reunited once again. Kristy recently assisted in the necessary transitional move for my parents from the Assisted Living side to the Generations team side. She made this difficult move for them a smooth changeover for a fresh start. We're excited to get a higher level of trained care in place to help with moms dementia needs that will result in needed respite relief care for dad. The Generations Director Lani Stegall immediately jumped in with the same high level of compassionate attention, support, & quality leadership that we experienced while working with Kristy. Both encourage continual feedback and communication. This great leadership team model has resulted in solid staff management of site operations. Grateful!!! I had a great experience with Lantern Crest when my parent's health really started to decline. My parents had lived in another assisted living community for 16 years in Escondido. My mother had Alz which had progressed and my father had a number of chronic conditions he was dealing with mostly related to his heart. Just before Christmas my father went into the hospital for a hernia procedure and wound up in the ICU due to having aspirated while unconscious. While he was in the hospital and then for another three weeks in rehab we discovered that my mother was a severe wander risk and couldn't safely remain in the community they had been living in. This is because it was not secured for residents needing memory care and it was apparent my father had been keeping her from wandering. We were relieved that my father survived his event but I was adamant to have them move to a community that could manage my mother's care more securely. I explained secured memory care to my father and he insisted that wherever my mother lived he was going to live with her. I thought this was great but also wanted my father to experience living in such a place before he completely committed himself. So I contacted Lantern Crest since they do have a secured memory care community and spoke to them about my parent's needs. The memory care community at Lantern Crest is called Generations and has key coded doors to make sure any residents who may have a tendency to wander remain safe. This was excellent because the Generations community is located in a building that also has assisted living which does provide care services and medication administration to those residents who need it. So my father would be able to live in the Generations community with my mother and he could go to the assisted community to interact with the residents and participate in the activities for those who do not have dementia. It sounded like a great idea but I still wanted my parents to try it out before completely committing to a move. In speaking to the management there I was told that they provide for respite stays in which a person or couple could move in for a shorter duration just to make sure it's going to be a good fit. So my parents did a two week respite stay in the Lantern Crest Generations community and my dad loved the place. The care staff could administer the care for both of them including the medication administration (my father was taking about 18 pills a day a different times), my mother was in a secure community if anything ever were to happen to my father again and my father was able to develop friendships with the residents in the assisted community who like him weren't suffering from any mental challenges related to dementia. So they made the move and everything we hoped to achieve in terms of the quality of the individualized care for each, the quality of the community, the friendliness and understanding of the care staff and management, the amenities and the friendships my father was hoping to build all worked out. My father has since passed but the decision we made to move them was timely. Moving my mother to a new community was a confusing event. One made much more manageable because she moved with my father and that relationship provided the continuity that I think was real important for her. And after my father passed she had become familiar enough with the Lantern Crest Generations community and care staff that to the extent possible, it remained familiar for her and less stressful for us as a family concerned about her wellbeing. I really want to thank the care staff there as they are good people who really do care about their residents. I had them pick out the clothes my father would wear for his final needs because I really thought they'd appreciate being involved. Doing so proved to be very emotional for the care givers there but they did tell me it helped them to say goodbye to him. And my dealing with management was always a positive experience. No doors were closed to me when I had questions. I highly recommend Lantern Crest for both assisted and memory care needs. Lantern Crest, I am sorry to have to voice my complaint like this, but your unresponsive management has given me no other choice. My parent is in the dementia unit and we have been on a roller coaster ride since we moved in. We have seen a lot of changes occur since the opening of this facility, all which directly affect the care of the residents. I have made several attempts to communicate my concerns with your management and you continue to brush my concerns aside or give me excuses. I have found this to be a common issue with many other people that have their parent living here. Everything seems to be a "work in progress". Its been this way since we moved in and i do not see anything changing in the near future. The staff are constantly being changed out. This makes is very hard to have consistent care with my parent. The minute we build a rapport with a caregiver or med tech, they are let go. When working with dementia it is important to have care staff that know the patient, this is impossible as staff are continuously being cycled in and out of the facility. Every time I walk by the room where they wheel all the residents, I am constantly being waved at for help because there are no caregivers around. While you work out your staffing issues, stop making us suffer. Staff more people until you get the kinks worked out. The dementia manager has her office right outside the room where she can clearly see residents being squeezed in a room with no caregivers nearby.Fix the problem. There is a posted activity calendar in the hallway. This to me is a reminder of false promises. It upsets me as it is a reminder of all the things that my parent will NOT do that day. When we moved in we were promised that they would be engaged and have activities to do throughout the day. I visit my parent on a regular basis and the only thing resembling an activity is the occasional themed meal. I don't consider watching the television an engaging activity. I am told there is an activity person being trained and that is the current excuse of why the residents sit around all the time . While you figure this out get someone else in there to do activities! If you are having issues with efficiency or staff training then schedule more people to work. Don't make my parent suffer while you work on the behind the scenes issues. Oranges are put out for residents to eat as a snack in the living rooms - when was the last time you saw a person with dementia peel an orange? There are water dispensers through out the building, but with no cups. I can see why person with dementia may get frustrated living here. During mealtime I often see the residents served a large piece of meat- and nothing to cut with, this forces them to have to pick up their food and eat it with their hands. Please protect my parents dignity and cut up their food! I have requested this countless times. I understand that you are a relatively new facility, but i'm tired of sitting back and watching my parent suffer as Lantern Crest goes through these "growing pains". There are many nice people that work at this facility, but there are not steps being made in a positive direction. We have my parent here because we are hopeful that something positive will happen, but i am losing hope very quickly. read more

Terrible place, Upper management became motivated to just make money and began neglecting attention to seniors and workers. It became the norm to work while understaffed, even when a meal period would go through 50+ residents. Servers not only had to take care of the front, but also act as prep cooks and even cooks (this being without the training or pay to make up for it). Bottom line: management is only focused on their current construction projects and making money. Their arrogance is used as a cover up for their ignorance and stupidity. There were so many hazards in the kitchen, such as boxes/ objects left on the ground, and meat left next to dirty dishes. It was disgusting. read more

I agree with a previous reviewer who said that it appears to be a nice place, but is actually very poorly run. They are way under staffed for the care they say they can provide. We were led to believe that our father was in good hands after we specifically discussed his needs and issues with walking. In the few days he was there, he was hospitalized twice due to falls because no one was watching him. He broke ribs and hit his head requiring stitches. One of the times we only found out that he wasn't there when we called to check up on him. Another time, he walked right out the door that supposedly had a code to get through, but the code just turns off the alarm. The alarm was going for 12 minutes with no one responding and he was found in the other building. The bottom line is, they don't check up often on the residents, due to the minimal staffing. If they need assistance with the restroom, they won't get it. If they fall, someone may discover them in a hour or two. I suppose if you have a loved one who doesn't really need any care and can do everything for themselves it would be fine, but then why are they there? In my opinion, this is a very dangerous place to leave your loved one. Don't do it. read more

I visit someone (in the memory care side) and notice that there are only TWO or THREE caregivers per floor/section! WOW! They are all REALLY busy with helping with showers, taking/directing them to the meals, taking out the trash and fixing beds??? They also get their meal orders, go back and forth (many times) to the kitchen, clean up the dining area and set up again. I guess they are doing way more then just "caregiving". Housekeeping, waitressing, and once they were moving tables and chairs from another area so I guess they are movers too! I can see why there is a turn around there. Its a good thing I guess the people in that section really can't complain. I would NEVER recommend anyone there. It may have new walls and paint and furniture but if you don't see caregivers around (at least TWO) while visiting/touring find another place. I visit another friend at a place in La Mesa and I see caregivers all over the place and my friends like it there better than at Latern. Yes, they moved out because of care quality. read more

My mother was in assisted living at Lantern Crest for a year and a half. There are many good things to say about Lantern Crest. The majority of the staff are very caring and attentive. Servers in the dining room are great, med techs are great as are caregivers and activities staff. The food is very good. However, I agree with several other reviewers: the corporation that runs LC is all about the money. Staff are over-worked, underpaid and probably short-staffed. Loved Kristy, the previous director-she was attentive, responsive and involved in the day to day running of LC. My mother, who had been there for 1.5years, fell ill and was taken to the hospital and died about a week and a half later. I phoned the current director, twice, to let her know that my mom had died. Never got a response, no return call. Several days later, I get a call from the billing dept saying the bill has not been paid. I told the woman that my mother had died and that I had left 2 messages to this effect. The woman in billing had no idea. We never received any sort of condolence card or message from LC. Mom was on hospice for just 2 days when she passed away. We rec'd condolence cards from the hospice folks as well as the hospital staff. Nothing from LC. They were getting $4500-5000/month for my mother's care and don't have the courtesy to offer condolences when one of the their residents passes away. I find that pathetic. And very sad. read more
