On October 5 of last year, our brother Radford suffered a catastrophic brain aneurysm and a carotid artery dissection while in Ocean Beach. He was admitted to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where he remained for over two months. During that time, he endured two strokes--one caused by a bleeding ulcer--as well as the placement of a stent in his brain to relieve pressure. To say he underwent at least six surgeries is likely an understatement. Thanks to an extraordinary surgical team and, without question, God's grace, he survived a moment when we were preparing to remove life support and organ donation was already being discussed. There is no doubt in our minds that his survival is nothing short of a miracle. Following this ordeal, we faced the overwhelming challenge of finding a long-term skilled nursing facility that accepted Medi-Cal. With limited options and tremendous uncertainty, Edgemoor Skilled Nursing Facility came to us unexpectedly--truly as a vision of hope. While some older reviews gave us pause, we also heard from others that the facility had changed significantly for the better in recent years. Trusting our instincts (and a higher power), we decided to move forward--and we are profoundly grateful that we did. The newer side of the facility is clean, well-maintained, and welcoming. However, what truly sets Edgemoor apart is its people. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted not as visitors, but as family. Doctors, nurses, CNAs, and staff members surrounded us with compassion, professionalism, and genuine concern. Three doctors were present during the intake process, taking the time to ask thoughtful questions about who our brother was--and who he still is--especially since he was unable to speak clearly or move beyond slight hand gestures. They were patient, clear, and intentional in their communication, ensuring we fully understood every step. As I repeatedly thanked them for the care and attention they were showing, their response was both humble and reassuring: they acknowledged that while they may not be perfect, they are always willing to listen, learn, and improve. That level of honesty and accountability is rare and deeply appreciated. Our brother has now been at Edgemoor for nearly a month, and I can confidently say that our family feels a growing sense of peace. My anxiety has eased, and I can finally breathe a little easier knowing he is in capable, caring hands. Between my sister, brother-in-law, niece, friends, and myself, someone visits almost daily and at varying times, so we have seen different facets of everyday life within. While we are still learning the procedures and routines, we have already witnessed remarkable progress. His growth--both physically and cognitively--is evident, thanks to the comprehensive therapies and the unwavering patience and kindness of the Doctors, nurses, CNAs, and staff. Their genuine care is something you can truly feel. As with any facility, occasional differences of opinion may arise, but every concern we've encountered has been resolved through open and respectful communication. I plan to continue sharing updates as time goes on, but my intuition tells me we are exactly where we are meant to be. Been visiting my mama for the past 13 years now at Edgemoor even in the old facility. It's not the best place for mentally challenged people to stay. I wish the nurses paid more attention to their patients and were more knowledgeable on other questions asked when a loved one comes in and is worried about the patient they are visiting. But I do understand they can only do what is expected and never do go the extra limit such shame this is my moms home :( But the new building is a lot nicer and spacious than the old location! read more

The Worst Place from Hell facility!!! The medical director here is Dr. Rebecca Ferrini and the only way I would bring a loved one here is if they hire a new medical director. Dr. Ferrini illegally changed my mother's advanced health care directive from comfort care to full code against my mother's legall expressed wishes and my orders as well as I was my mother's power of attorney. Dr. Ferrini also kicked my mother out so cruely in her final days to the hospital when she had no medical reason to be sent there. After just one day the hospital tried to release my mother back to Edgemoor Hospital as she was stable and had no reason medically to have been sent there in the first place but Dr. Ferrini refused even though my mother had a legal seven day bed hold. She basically kicked my mother out of her home just because of a sister who disagreed with my mother's choice of being a DNR/comfort care. My mother died ten days later in the hospital after enduring invasive tests that she did not want while they figured out the legalities. It didn't take long for the hospital's attorneys to realize the legal papers stood and my mother's advanced health care directive was recognized along with my authority. The hospital even reported Edgemoor Hospital and Dr. Ferrini to the San Diego Health Department for illegal and medically irresponsible care. read more

Beware of this place, this review is based on my experience working as an RN. If you get hire, run. Everyday will be like hell to you, if you are new, you will get pick on all the time and you cannot fight back, if you try to defend yourself, they will complain to supervisor and HR, no one will listen to you or on your side even you are right, because you are new and they have been working there 10+ year. They promise they will train you but training is a joke. I was on training for two weeks - one month, but the training only covers 5% of my job, they will not train you everything, they will say you will learn once you start working and if you have questions, ask your supervisor. Once the two weeks is done, you get no support at all. They said you can ask supervisor but when you asked, they will not help you, you will get yell at because you call them and ask help from them, they will tell you , "you need to do this yourself. I am very busy, I cannot come to you." But they were eating lunch with other nurses. You will be written up all the time because you have no support and you start making mistakes, and you get no help but yelling. You will be in charge of everything, even if the sink is clogged,you will be the one calling around to look for help. if you work night shift, good luck to you, there is no house keeping supervisor and they cannot fix that for you. And because you cannot get someone to fix that right away, everyone start saying mean things to you like you are not good at your job. There is bully at work and we don't hv training on bullying at all. The big bully is the supervisor and no one ever do anything, everyone is talking about it but no one takes action. Everyone at work know the supervisors are big time bully, they use their power to fire anyone they don't like. Even DON let the supervisor do that. When supervisor does not like you, they will write you up on everything and later on they use that to fire you. They always have paperwork saying you are at fault. Remember you are new, you will make a lot of mistakes and they use that to write you up and kick you out. They are big time bully. Another thing is, You have to deal with everything, even though it is not your job, if you don't do it, supervisor will yell at you and belittle you, pull you out of nurses station and ask you to go inside med room and start chewing you out when everyone is outside, everyone can hear the yelling. When you finally come out from med room, everyone would tease you and start saying mean things in front of you,like it is your fault, and no one will support you or help you. You will be stress out all the time. I was so busy I dont even have time to eat lunch. Not just one day, all the time. I would starve myself because there is so much things to do, and you will stay late because you cannot finish your job, not that you are not good, it is because you hv to do everything, doing everything including things that is not your responsibility. And because no one is helping you, you spend a lot of time try to figure out how to do things. And because no supervisor support, you don't know what is your job, you just know when there is a problem, you need to deal with it, and when there is a problem, everyone will hide away and pretend to be busy, so you have to deal with the problem yourself and you are doing everything, including other person's responsibility. And if you stay late, you cannot ask to add extra hours and get pay, you will be questioned why you need extra hours, how come you cannot finish your work. And the whole bad cycle start again, supervisor will question your work ability, you will be yelled at and it will be all look like it is your own fault again. The other thing is, the patients are treated like king and queen, if they complain you to the state, you will be written up even though it is not your fault. Even you work like a slave but they can still complain you, and you will be in trouble. One thing I want to point out is, even though it is not your fault, once they complain to the state, it become your fault. Supervisor will talk to you, DON will talk to you, administrator will talk to you , and all will say it is your fault. There are evil patients in the facility, they will pick on you if you are new. And you hv no way to complain them because your company will not help you. The supervisor will tell you, "we are in service business, the patient is always right" . Believe me, the patient treating me like a slave but no one help me. Your company will not back you up. Even though it is not your fault, your supervisor wants you to apologize to the patient. You don't have dignity at all, you just feel like your heart being torn into many pieces and someone still think you are in fault, and give you a smack in your face. read more

I have to say, the review most recently listed by C.J. reflects my own experience at Edgemoor also. I was an RN there a little over a year ago and had a very similar experience to what she had. It is one of few places I worked where I left with some PTSD of a toxic workplace. They have a very high nurse turnover there. Yes C.J. made mistakes, and I also made some also. And guess what? Until they change their system of how they pass medications, anyone in there will continue to make mistakes. They keep their favorites and probably one of C.J.'s faults was she was not Filipino. If you are, then they won't go after you at all. Please, if you value your mental health, stay as far away from this place as possible. This skilled nursing facility (it is not a nursing home) has won numerous awards and accolades, and for good reason. Edgemoor was my son's home for nearly 8 years. During that time he received outstanding and loving care from the entire staff--from the doctors to the nurses to the maintenance staff to the security staff. Edgemoor serves a very special population that can be difficult and challenging--on a good day. Their communication with our family was excellent and any concerns or complaints were handled quickly and efficiently. When our son fell seriously ill and needed hospice care, the Edgemoor doctors stepped in to provide loving and palliative care until he passed in a place where he felt love and joy. Edgemoor is a wonderful facility! It's clean and well run by the County of San Diego and provides excellent skilled nursing care. A friend of mine was admitted to Edgemoor earlier this year for long term care because of her increasing disabilities due to advanced Multiple Sclerosis. She was very reluctant to move there and fought it as long as humanly possible. Although she really did not want move to Edgemoor at all (no one does!) she now can hardly believe how happy and cmfortable she is living there. All of the County Edgemoor staff I have interacted with are kind and caring and professional. My friend appreciates the kindness and positive attitude of the staff. She enjoys the activities that are offered to residents and participates to the extent she is able. One of the best features of Edgemoor is that each resident has their own small bedroom, unlike other facilities. This provides a welcome sense of privacy and home. Edgemoor medical staff have promptly and correctly identified my friend's developing medical problems that required hospitalization and surgeries. My friend and I are both thankful to the County of San Diego for Edgemoor. read more
