(If you read my other reviews, you'll notice that most are raves. This one is not.
My point is I only gripe when I have good reason to, and when I get great service I thank the owners and employees with great reviews, as its one way I can help them beyond just buying from them.)
The first trip to the store was great! Polite, friendly and all around great service. My wife was just starting out needing materials for a stitching project, as well as advice, having lots of experience with needlepoint. The young woman who helped her was the perfect employee, we couldn't have been happier with the experience.
I also want to preface this with a statement about my wife's attitude when it comes to asking for help in a store. She is unfailingly polite, friendly, and approaches employees with respect, as in "Hi there, would you mind helping me find/do [whatever] ? Thank you!" To be blunt, she doesn't ask or expect anyone to kiss her ***, only that they at least try to provide reasonable service.
If my wife likes the service, she is very loyal to that store.
We returned to the store today to get more materials and my wife hoped to get some guidance on a particular part of a project she is new to, cross-stitching work. The first lady we spoke with was very helpful and friendly, but explained that she didn't do cross-stitching, so she suggested us to another employee who did. My wife thanked her, and moved over to the table where the other woman was. My wife greeted her, and showing her the piece, asked a specific question about cross-stitching, but the question was ignored; Instead, she told my wife her efforts were all wrong, looked bad, and suggested she rip it all out and start over. Then she elaborated on why it looked bad.
My wife chuckled, "well, I'm a novice, that's why its not so great" then tried to re-direct, repeating the question, hoping this would shed some light on _why_ she was asking in the first place. Her questions were ignored, and instead this lady continued to criticize.
The other employee who had helped us earlier was helpful and very nice when we asked her about another needlepoint project; She was honestly charming to talk to, but the unhelpful woman made things worse when my wife tried again with a different question- she was dismissive and questioned why my wife wasn't using a particular type of canvas, why she chose the thread, etc. She wasn't just unhelpful, it was as if she was determined to make my wife feel ashamed. For example, the woman stated:
"You'll need to use two different types of thread, then combine them." When my wife replied, "I'm sorry, I don't understand" the response was not "Let me show you" it was "then use one strand, but it will show through."
We left the store, and my wife told me she felt completely discouraged, that she felt like she had received a failing grade from a demanding teacher rather than help and advice. She isn't normally sensitive about things, and would typically just say something privately to me, like "what a nasty salesperson!" but in this case the employee came off as far more concerned with pointing out my wife's lack of experience and knowledge rather than being helpful or at least answering direct questions.
My wife pointed out "at this rate I'm better off looking for thread on Amazon."
I don't know who owns or manages the store; I certainly hope we weren't dealing with the owner. If so, she's doing a great job scaring away what would otherwise be loyal customers. read more
