Monarch Carnival Supply Company

Logan Circle, Downtown

UPDATE: Rightfully so, the previous review I've mentioned here has been deleted…read more As a follow up to a previous typically uncalled for, inaccurate , insensitive review the fact is Monarch is a charming 1960's old school prize, gift, party, store. It has everything you would ever needs for parties, contest, carnivals, office parties and the like. Whether it be prizes, political memorabilia, decor, raffle tickets, clown costumes, fun kids games, fun adult games etc., they have it, and know exactly where it is. I love the step back in time browsing of all the fun that was had in the 1960's, '70's, and '80's and I gather items, especially the raffle tickets, from Monarch every time we have an office party. I love the support I give to the charming man that owns it, who has stood his ground in the same spot since the 1960's through all the eras of the past on the strong history riddled 14th Street. The up's, down's, drug ridden, prostitution, MLK rioting and now 300 thousand dollar condos filled with reviewers with ill informed facts, that I mentioned before. Stop by Monarch (call first) you'll get a thrill chatting with the old man about the history of his store, all the Carnivals that his family owned business used to supply, 14th Street, Washington, DC, and Presidents of many years past. Oh, and by the way...along with all of the other made-up, paranoid, false accusations made by the previous reviewer, the phone number listed on the door on a piece of cardboard as old as she is, is to a LAND LINE- not a cell phone as she states falsely. Check it out when you get inside, it's a rotary (totally cool).

Monarch Carnival Supply, aka, Monarch Novelties, hunkers on one of the last downtrodden blocks in…read morethe Logan Circle part of 14th street. It's instantly recognizable as the tumbledown storefront on the block of 14th between Rhode Island and N St. with enormous carnival prizes behind the plate glass window. These are old school carnival prizes -- five-foot-high electric blue donkeys and the like stuffed with cheap, featherweight foam. Not the new digimon, Elmo, etc. prizes that seem to be in demand these days. I never had reason to cross Monarch's threshold until one Saturday when I was under orders to acquire some "novelties" to give out as prizes. Monarch did not disappoint. The interior looks like it has been in a comfortable state of decay for several years and is chockablock with decades old newspapers, stacks of yellowing receipts, and every conceivable piece of gimcrack imaginable. It's a place where Ignatius J. Reilly would feel right at home. I'm going to go back when I have time just to browse the overflowing floor-to-ceiling shelves. And in case you were wondering, I had no problem finding some novelty prizes there.
