Not sure why this place is rated so low but I had a pleasant dining experience at Imperial Palace. More of an old school sit down Chinese restaurant. Teriyaki beef was very good, even came with the mini grills to heat them up. Got the Sizzling Steak for entree and it was very good. Good meal for very reasonable price. Would eat here again. I don't even wanna give them a star but I ordered shrimp fried rice from here & I gnat like fly was in it, I was refused a refund after arguing with someone speaking broken English insisting that they don't believe it was a bug in it. A solid Chinese restaurant that has all the classics you'd expect from a Chinese restaurant...and more. Put in a big order for pickup. Had to wait a bit for it to be made, but I heard that they only had one person working in the kitchen the whole night. When we got our order, everything was exactly what we ordered. Tofu and broccoli, kung pao steamed veggies, double fried pork, fried rice, general tso's chicken, crab rangoon -- it was all solid fast Chinese American cuisine. I know the reviews have been low lately, but please be kind and understand that being short staffed, having high staff turnover, etc., leads to inconsistency in how dishes taste. We moved to Freeport from Joliet- Plainfield area in 2020. We have tried Chinese at many places here in Freeport. Imperial Place to us is the closest to our taste. I prefer fried rice brown, I also eat sweet and sour chicken and would prefer more peppers and pineapple in the sauce. However my husband enjoys the beef and always orders egg roll. read more

This has been a favorite place for my friends and me for 20+ years. We were nervous beforehand given several recent negative online reviews, but given those reviews we were pleasantly surprised at our lunch experience. The complimentary tea and egg drop soup, as well as the beef teriyaki appetizer were all just as good as we remember! The main dish was the one aspect of the meal where we noticed change. I got the chicken with black bean sauce and asked for it spicy, as well as our usual side of chili paste. Okay. Not the most authentic Chinese cuisine, but dang the nostalgia brings me back over and over when I am home to visit family. The windowless building makes you wonder if it was perhaps an "adult establishment" and the enormous fish that greet you in a small fish tank is a tad off-putting. The decor has not changed in decades, with a few cultural pieces but the booths and tables are comfortable and the service typically friendly and extremely fast. We always get the crab rangoons, which I have used as the comparison at other restaurants during my adulthood. For some reason, they are not as crispy as they once were, with the last two visits tasting a bit chewy and stale. I was happy to see that they now offer potato chicken (instead of just beef) because beef at Chinese restaurants often seems a bit like a dog chew toy. The potatoes were slightly crispy and sautéed in the same yummy brown sauce as the chicken, sprouts and the broccoli and carrots that I added. I am an onion hater, which is the only veggie included unless you make a request. While the fried rice is not as good as the old Jimmy Lee's restaurant in town, it gets the job done and includes veggies and egg. My husband has had the general tso's and also the shrimp and broccoli and really enjoyed the second dish. The general's dish was overcooked dark meat chicken containing quite a bit of gristle. Overall, Imperial Palace is worth a visit and has the friendly Midwest service. We got timely drink refills (and complementary hot tea) and our food within 10 minutes. Great lunch specials and dinner was affordable as well, even with veggie additions, soda and an appetizer, the bill was under $30. read more

I ordered online on Easter to get a carry out. I didn't realize they were only serving dinner food that day so I ordered off the lunch menu. I got a phone call and could not understand anything the man said except "dinner" I then realized what he meant. I told him to just change the order to the same food but at the dinner price. He then said "hold on" and I sat on the phone and waited. He then got back on the phone and said "ok" and hung up on me. I had no idea if he got the order right or what was going on. This place was voted best ethnic food 19 years in a row so what can go wrong right? Well, unfortunately for me, i must've ordered the only dish in the menu that wasn't part of the survey. I had the szechuan pressed duck. I hate giving a place a one but if i couldn't even eat it then it's pretty bad. The duck was dry (even drenched in the sauce) and cold. It tasted like it came straight out of the freezer. I ended up trying to find the stray cat i saw by my hotel to feed it to. Unfortunately, i didn't see it so the duck just went to waste. We have been going to the "The Palace" for almost 27 years, a 65 mile found trip. It was always skillfully managed (hands-on, not delegated) by Don and Linda. With the new management the portions seem smaller and there are extra charges for things that were free. With my order of cashew shrimp, the shrimp were slightly undercooked and the fried rice was clumpy and gummy, the egg roll was good but had a slight pork off-taste However, my wife had a chicken dinner which she thought was very good. Though it was not a busy time, late Sunday morning, waitresses yammering from the bar area could be heard throughout the room. Something Linda would not have tolerated. Sorry, though it is painful to make changes after so many years, the Imperial Palace is no longer our go-to restaurant in the Freeport area. read more

We've given Imperial multiple chances and it's just not up to par. The dinner items are especially bad, being flavorless and sometimes tasting off. 2 star rating is only because the cheese sticks are good. There are much better Chinese options in town. WE have always loved this restaurant, whether takeout during covid or dine-in. The couple that own it are really nice and it's always a pleasure to visit with them when we're there. This place has gone WAAAAAY downhill since the new owners took over. I came alone on a Saturday night and was immediately seated at a table that was filthy from previous customers. A young girl who did not speak English tried to set the table with food particles and gravy still on the table. When I asked her to clean the table she laughed. When I DEMANDED she clean the table, she walked away. And I walked out. The food has been getting more expensive, smaller portions, and not well prepared. Clearly, the new owners are not concerned with cleanliness or the staff would be focused on cleaning a table between diners. I shudder to think how filthy the kitchen must be if that is all the attention they pay to cleanliness. Worst experience at a local establishment I've had in all of my life. Other than being already overpriced and outdated dishes, as I picked up my $50+ order for my family, they couldnt complete it correctly. We ordered the Lobster Tail ($16+), and received a chewy, overcooked shrimp dish. Called back and asked politely why we received this, and was rudely told that the menu was wrong, and that they replaced the lobster with ordinary shrimp...woth no price change. Was told to bring the food back, which is a 10 mile drive for us, to get our money back. Overall bad food, poor customer service, high prices, and a sad establishment that thrives on deception and rudeness. Will never return or recommend! read more

I grew up eating at Imperial Palace, the fanciest Chinese restaurant in Freeport. I literally can not even begin to count the number of times I have eaten here, always so excited to slurp down my kiddie cocktail. If we weren't at the Lindo or Wal-Mart we were at Imperial Palace. From the outside it looks like a small version Chinese palace, and the decor on the inside is completely Asian - screenprints and carvings galore. Now that I am a little older and no longer live in the area, you'd think that I would have moved on, but no! I still have yet to find a better crab rangoon, sweet and sour chicken, or fried rice. Oh and the bobo platter?! With the little grill in the middle of the platter that you can fry your teriyaki strips on?! When I was a kid I went out with just my Mom and we shared it... it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen! Of course then I hated all the other appetizers that came with it since I had no idea what they were, but that little grill is awesome. I do have to say that I've always hated the tea, even though I forced myself to drink it just in case I magically liked it that one time... it just tastes bitter and metallic. And adding 8 packets of sugar only makes it worse. Anyway, once you're done with dinner, don't forget to stop by the gift counter and get your Botan rice candy! Which is basically just a chewy glob of rice goo, but to me was the most exotic candy ever. They also had some plastic trinkets to get as souvenirs, not sure if they have that stuff anymore. One time my brother got me one of the small Chinese lanterns, I had it hanging in my room for about 10 years! haha So basically, if you happen to be in Freeport and want some Chinese food, you cannot go wrong with coming here! read more

I've been here quite a few times and never really been impressed with the food or service. I usually order the chicken fried rice and the crab ragoon which is a fairly simple meal. It consistently tastes just okay. I honestly prefer the Happy Wok food compared to this. It tastes a lot better and price is lower. Not sure what the fuss about this place is anyway. Just because it's been around awhile doesn't mean it's good. The service for me has been mediocre. Most of the time, I get a waitress who speaks little to no English so communication is tough. Overall, I don't think I will be coming back here. There are far too many Chinese food places to settle for this. read more
