This place is a testimony to the NYC unique surf culture. It is filled with the two sexiest scents in the world: coffee and surf wax. It's also staffed by completely hot guys, although they are at the most metro looking surfers I've seen (if they surf). I crossed the border from NJ to make make it here, just to check it out. I think the coffee is pretty excellent, second to my beloved Farleys and Blue Bottle in San Francisco. Music is awesome and the back patio/garden is an excellent place to chill. It seems bizarre and out of place for NYC, but that's why I love it. I am not really tempted by the surf gear in this store, it's more geared to guys. The boards are beautiful but pricey.

The café appears to have a very small food selection as well but I didn't order from it so don't take my word for it. The space doubles as a design gallery, with art pieces, home decor, etc. for sale. The emphasis on design is apparent before you even step inside. An old-time pushcart propping up a "Welcome" sign catches your eye from the street so you know you're in the right place, which was helpful because the shop is a bit off the beaten path (although not at all hard to find if armed with the address). The site seems to have been chosen specifically for its industrial feel, but there is no trace of coldness from what used to be a factory (and before that, about 100 years ago, a horse stable) The space has a kind of country farmhouse feel to it, with decorative scarves hanging from the brick walls and sponge-painted planks of wood decorating the front-of-house coffee bar. I talked to the manager (Fumio Tashiro, a very hospitable man), who said the café will change ownership in July, and an entirely new drink menu will be rolled out. He mentioned he will still be here, and I plan to come back then and make sure things haven't changed too much, as I really like it the way it is now!
