Overall, they have a hip but subtle styling. Sort of stealth-wealth in a sense. The qualty of materials is great for the price and their customer service is very responsive and helpful. As I entered the back area I saw two staff standing behind a counter so I said hi. Yet both of them just stood there glumly, silent. After looking around, I decided to not get anything, and said thanks to the staff but received no response, again. I don't know if these staff are like that always, but it sure would be unpleasant if they judge their customers by looks and flip flops their attitudes. The only good thing was that the barista was nice and friendly. I quickly left the shop because of the aforementioned staff attitudes, but the coffee looked good and they had a nice variety of pastries as well, so I may go back just for the coffee next time.

Pilgrim is that shop for NYC, and their presence on the scene has helped put New York a little more firmly on the surf world's map. Do I want to pay $300 for hand-sewn linen pants made by some kind of fisherman-painter who lives in a van? Not often. But sometimes you can get an end of season sale that makes the clothes more affordable. And they're certainly nice clothes. As for the surfboards... they're expensive as well. They're pretty much all hand-shaped and they cost about double the price of a big-name board from Channel Islands or Lost or whatever. But it's kinda nice having these expensive hipster boards circulating around the NYC area because it means those of us who aren't rich can grab them on the resale market when the original tech/finance bro buyers inevitably lose interest. And they're nice boards, for sure. Just note that not all the employees actually know that much about surfboards. They can all help you with the basics but beyond a certain point they'll need to refer you to one of the resident experts. Anyway: I give them five stars, because I only buy their stuff on sale or second-hand... but I'm glad to have it around.

If you've been to Reuse America, similar idea except more clothes and lower prices. They have clothing, kitchen gear, mugs, glassware, chairs and furniture- you name it. They have a great selection of women's clothes with sweaters around $10 and coats ranging $20-$40. There are vintage gems in there, but also your typical Forever 21 from 2007. Go in expecting to stay a while, and you'll find treasures! The staff is actually quite friendly in my opinion, just be kind to them and it will come back to you.

The café appears to have a very small food selection as well but I didn't order from it so don't take my word for it. The space doubles as a design gallery, with art pieces, home decor, etc. for sale. The emphasis on design is apparent before you even step inside. An old-time pushcart propping up a "Welcome" sign catches your eye from the street so you know you're in the right place, which was helpful because the shop is a bit off the beaten path (although not at all hard to find if armed with the address). The site seems to have been chosen specifically for its industrial feel, but there is no trace of coldness from what used to be a factory (and before that, about 100 years ago, a horse stable) The space has a kind of country farmhouse feel to it, with decorative scarves hanging from the brick walls and sponge-painted planks of wood decorating the front-of-house coffee bar. I talked to the manager (Fumio Tashiro, a very hospitable man), who said the café will change ownership in July, and an entirely new drink menu will be rolled out. He mentioned he will still be here, and I plan to come back then and make sure things haven't changed too much, as I really like it the way it is now!

It cost me $15 to rent the board for 2 hours. Very reasonable. The staff is kind and nice. They let you change inside and store all your stuff there. Super nice of them, I don't know how we would've kept our stuff safe without them. Thanks!
