The view from this restaurant is amazing. We were there before sunset and got to enjoy a 7 course tasting menu each. I loved the fact they had a vegetarian tasting menu for me and another menu that matched for my husband. We were both impressed with the attentiveness of the wait staff, the presentation and flavours of the food and the atmosphere. Sitting atop the Hassler hotel at the top of the Spanish Steps, the Michelin one star Imago boast some of the most stunning view of Rome and Vatican City with food to match. A warm greeting by the doorman. The lobby attendant directs you to the lifts. The lift doors open, a friendly greeting by the jacket clad matre 'd, assistant, and head waiter. Offers made to store your coats then whisked through the elegant dining room with tasteful purple and blue LED accents on columns. This is not your parent's fine dining restaurant of yesteryear. The sparkling wine cart arrives. Opt for an Italian sparkling wine. The selection is excellent. Most are unavailable in the States. Their quality surpasses many of the top Champagne houses. Amuses arrive. Paper thin, potato crisps fried in olive oil, a trio of cod fish in crisp potato cigars accented by olives and lemon, a tempura soft boiled quail egg in a cream sauce of chervil and pine nuts. All intriguing flavors. All leave you yearning for more. Attention to detail is everywhere. The bread basket, with its dozen offerings is set over a candle, covered with a cloth to keep the bread warm. A side of burrata cheese ties the flavors together. Excellent. All this before the menus arrive. Multi degustation menus including a full vegetarian option is the best way to try the inspiried Roman cuisine that fuses the subtle flavors of Asia with the traditional. For example a scampi prawn carpaccio with pineapple reduction purple potato, baby radicchio. The cloyingly sweet scampi prawn is accented by the strong acidity of the pineapple. The characteristic seafood taste is tempered by the earthy potato and peppery radicchio. Not enough "fusion"? How about a ravioli filled with white bean pure in a bonito, chili, sumac broth accented with dark tapioca pearls and red radish sprouts. Spicy with a delicate herbaceous balance. Too much "fusion"? How about a simple risotto with tomato, anchovies, and intensely aromatic lemon peel. Maybe lamb? The eye of a boneless rack wrapped in the fat from the shoulder roasted mid rare with the perfect crispy, salty crust served in a red wine jus and a deep fried artichoke. The bitterness of the carciofo brings out the sweet gamy taste of the lamb beautifully. Finally deserts. A pre-desert of yogurt with strawberry pure and brittle crunch. An interpretation of a Snickers bar accented by the aroma of burnt peanuts (trust me, the smell makes your mouth water, just don't eat it, blech). Finished by petifores including a tiny moist banana cake and even smaller lemon meringue pie. Outstanding wine book heavily weighted to Italy. Ask for guidance. Tip: Although all the Super Tuscan and other greats of Italy are well represented, this is the chance to try the best, hardest to acquire wines of the Lazio DOC. Prices to quality, excellent. This is one of the top three restaurants in the whole city when factoring in food quality, service and atmosphere with an incredible view. It has a Michelin star, and we tried one of their tasting menus, which is the way to go. The reason this restaurant is a standout is because it fuses and updates a bunch of different italian-inspired classics into interesting new dishes. It combines the artistic plating of Osteria Francescana with the warmth in service and taste of Eleven Madison Park, and the panoramic (180 degree) view of Rome from the top of the Spanish Steps makes it worth it in and of itself. The tasting menu is definitely the way to go--I think the 8 course is sufficient. The staff was friendly and extremely accommodating with switching out certain dishes in the tasting menu due to allergies. This was by far one of the best meals I've had in my entire life. Chef Andrea Antonini is extremely talented. If you want an unforgettable experience you HAVE to do the 6 or 8 prefixed course meal and let him make you what he wants. You won't regret it! My husband and I dined here to celebrate our last day in Rome. We started off with a glass of champagne and some bread as we enjoyed the view of the city while trying to figure out what to order. We both decided to order the signature dishes tasting menu and a bottle of wine. The miso seared mackerel with foie gras and the sake glazed cod were my favorites. The rest of the dishes were not that impressive. Although, I must say that the wine that our server helped us select was amazing. I must warn the ladies, if you're not that hungry, don't order the tasting menu. I feel like I wasted so much food since I was already so full when the fourth dish was served. One of the most opulent settings in which I've ever dined, with breathtaking views of the Eternal City. Also, the service here is better than any I can recall. The waiters look they were recruited from the ranks of a military academy. And they wore tail coats, for heaven's sake! As superb as all this was, the food was just as magnificent. We were offered salmon-wrapped ricotta and a trio of amuse-bouches to begin, followed by a crudo of john dory. I had fried stuffed scallops, which weren't as wonderful as the other dishes we had but still very good. Next came a fusilloni carbonara with quail ragu and quail eggs, quite possibly the most deliciously decadent pasta dish I've ever eaten in my 37 years on this earth. Wakako U. had a filet steak with curry shrimp, the latter of which she didn't enjoy but I liked just fine. I had breaded mackerel over what I believe were pureed fava beans. After that heavenly pasta, how could it measure up? We washed all of this deliciousness down with an '07 Trappolini Paterno Sangiovese. This culinary adventure set us back a cool 281 euros ($387), and that's without tip, but it was well worth it! Oh, and in case it matters to you, they've got a Michelin star. From the time we sat down the wait staff was very attentive and immediately brought is some exotic treats (free) from the chef that were delicious. While we were torn between the a la carte menu items, we decided to give the chef free reign and ordered the 5 course dinner. While discussing the selections with our waiter, he catered to our preferences and altered the menu accordingly. Each course was delicious in its own right and who would have thought (we're from the US) that pigeon could taste so wonderful. The deserts were many little precious delicacies. They even brought out desert for our deserts. The wait staff was always and only there at the appropriate times and left us to enjoy a leisurely dinner in an idyllic setting, The price was commiserate with the overall experience. We were greeted in by the doorman at the Hassler Hotel, who gladly took our shopping bags and lead us to the lift. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were greeted by the hostess, who took our bags and the matre'd who gladly took our coats. The restaurant was nice, but the view was breath taking! We were sat at the best table in the house, right along the window over-looking all of Rome! The menu was quite extensive and everything sounded delicious. We opted for the tasting menu. Each course was a delight, the flavours melded beautifully! We drank and ate for hours, the pace between course was perfect. The service was impeccable, attentive, but not overbearing. It was definitely a great way to finish our tour of Rome. I would highly recommend this restaurant for the full experience when in Rome! read more

Imago provided attentive but often incompetent and chaotic service paired with food that ranged from sublime to incompetent. We had planned our anniversary supper at Rome's highly respected Imago months ahead of time, seeking and obtaining assurance in advance, both by telephone and email, that the restaurant would be able to accommodate my gluten free diet within one of their tasting menus. We were eagerly anticipating sharing a delightful meal as we have shared 45 wonderful years together. The trouble started immediately when we were brought starters to share. At least one of the starters appeared to breaded, so I called the waiter back to confirm that they were safe for me to eat. They weren't. After some time, the kitchen produced two unremarkable pieces of limp purple cauliflower with a palid dressing to replace the three different starters my wife enjoyed. We then learned that in fact the kitchen could or would not produce a gluten free tasting menu. To compound the situation, the server brought my wife, instead of me, the menu with the prices listed. We then saw a number of intriguing plates being delivered to all the tables but ours. These were complimentary amuse bouches being served to everyone, except us. The waiter explained that they were not delivered to our table, not even to my wife, because they were not gluten free and there was no substitutes provided us. The service bordered on the American chain restaurant "my name is John and I am your server this evening"in that our conversation was constantly interrupted by staff asking us how the most recent course was, usually by more than one staff. Worse, we were frequently asked the same service question more than once by different staff even though we had answered the first time. From front to back, communication and coordination among staff appeared non-existent. Servers were also unaware of what were in the dishes, or demonstrated basic food errors as I will show when discussing the food To add insult to injury, staff, including the manager continued to deny that any of their errors actually occurred. For example, they claimed that I was told that I could not eat the initial appetizers when they were delivered. This was definitely not true Their signature dishes were a mixed experience. My clay baked gilt head bream was sublime, truly unique, perfectly cooked and beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. The waiter mistakenly described the gilt head as a type of sea bass, which it definitely is not. The Risotto with Cacia cheese, pepper and sesame was a play on a traditional Roman pasta. The waiter described the seasoning as including black and white sesame and several different peppers, a twist on the traditional preparation. The description reminded me of Japanese Shichimi Taragashi. The resulting risotto although acceptable, had none of the variety of the Japanese seasoning, tasting overwhelmingly of black pepper and salt, excessive salt by any standard. A special white truffle menu included a very good dish comprising a sous vide egg, a lovely espuma and a macedoine of vegetable and pork. My wife had the "water pasta", a soup of seafood and noodles meant to be a fusion of Italian cooking and udon soup. The insipid dish had well overcooked noodles and a virtually inedible shellfish that the waiter could not identity other than as "something from the sea"(I believe that it may have been a variety of whelk). He said that the restaurant gets a seafood mixture and that they were not sure what was in it. The waiter neglected to bring a spoon, leaving her the challenge of eating soup with a fork. When we received the bill, no adjustment had been made for the missing amuse bouches, nor for the water pasta dish my wife did not eat. This is the first restaurant I have ever eaten at where the manager did not offer an accommodation in price. As we left the manager did offer us gratis an elegant box containing a few bottles of the chef's special seasonings, which they normally sell to the restaurant's patrons at the end of the meal. We demurred. Dinner was fine, thus the 3 stars. I am giving an honest review because I think it is important to know for people who are considering going. Of course the view is stupendous. The restaurant is itself also, lovely. The food, unfortunately, not the best we have had in Rome over many trips to the city. We all left and said it was overrated and the service was not up to par for the price. They were either short staffed or just decided they could treat our table second fiddle. The waiters always seemed hurried and continually reached across my face to place things (forks, pour drinks) down which is not acceptable. I could have bit his arm. ;) I understand formal and professional, this was a similar attempt but lacking certain serving etiquette and exceptional ism that, for $250 per person, you should receive. Our dinner for 6 was extremely expensive, and long! We were prepared for expensive but not 3 hours! (Not even having dessert!) We had high expectations for the food. The food itself: scallops bland, tuna carpaccio very good, mozzarella with pomodoro soup good, black cod slimy and too salty, lobster risotto, eh, fine. Duck was well received but not the best we have ever had. Overall left feeling dinner was only okay and as such, regretted going. On our walk back to our hotel, I kept seeing all these great charming places and thought I wish we had just gone there. I am sorry to give this a two star but I think it is important for me to do so especially in light of its expense and the fact that everyone else raves about this restaurant. I think that this restaurant is probably for those people who are used to eating at extremely expensive restaurants because I have tasted so much other better food both in Rome and all over the world. One of the things that gets rated well in this place is the Italian fusion but there are many countries that have fusion food and I don't think this place does it well. I have heard that this restaurant gets disappointing reviews because it is not traditional Italian. It isn't traditional but the food is amazing with a flavor profile that clearly reflects a very clever chef. I had crab claw risotto as an appetizer which as ok, Linda had rabbit pasta pursues that were just strange tasting. For mains I had a very small piece of filet and she had fish. Definitely different. The desserts were perfection. I don't remember what I had but it had white chocolate passion fruit, crumble and some sort of balsamic reduction that had me kicking the small container. Ever since then, I have been obsessed with passion fruit. It's definitely a must try when you're in Rome and a foodie. Be prepared to spend at least $400 -$500 for a group of 3.
