An Hungarian bistro in the heart of Vienna
Jeff H.

My favorite Hungarian bistro in Vienna is this little eatery on a tiny side street right in the heart of Vienna. The food at Ilona Stüberl is very tasty, the staff extremely friendly, and the atmosphere - well Hungarian! Just be aware it is very popular but with the Schanigarten available in warmer weather, it is then a bit easier to claim a table. Their Gulasch soup is superb. I usually get the small bowl but as I am nearing the end I am always wishing I had ordered the large bowl. My main course recently was a delicious Paprikás Csirke (Chicken paprikash) with Nokedli. Of course I generously added some genuine paprika from the spicy paprika condiment on the table. The Nokedli perfectly absorbed the excess sauce. I can def recommend this longtime Hungarian mainstay in the center of Vienna! Again keep in mind Illona Stüberl is super popular and not very big so have a little patience.....

My family of 6 stopped here for lunch because this Hungarian restaurant was highly rated on Yelp. I am glad we did because we enjoyed a nice Hungarian lunch outside. We started with three half liters of Zipfer draft beers for 4.60 euros each. I enjoyed their Rhindsgulasch for 13.50 euros. My family enjoyed the Schwelnsgulasch for 12.50, the Paprikahuhn for 13.50 and the Gelegtes Kraut for 12.50 euros. The Ujhazi Klein was 5 euros. My total bill was 89 euros. We all enjoyed our lunch before we continued our tour of Vienna Wein.

Beef goulash + white bean soup in the back

Pretty good food! I got the beef goulash per recommendation and was pleasantly surprised by how tender the beef was. My friend got the risotto and it tasted good! Note that it's not like Italian risotto. More similar to paella/rice. He ordered the normal and it was a huge portion! The white bean soup my friend ordered tasted ok, it's one of their most popular dishes. Overall good experience.

Famous bean soup - excellent

One of the best restaurants I've been to in Europe. The food is incredible, and the staff is good. The Transylvania Platter is awesome, but the bean soup is a must have. Everything was great, and I hope to come back.

The portion size here is HUGE! So be careful when ordering food. The paprika chicken and stew that we ordered was really good! True hungarian taste, good service and friendly server.

Clean plate club, baby!

Oh my goodness, this is a fabulous find in Vienna! Small and cozy, I don't think this restaurant could accommodate 50 people at a time. The servers are charming and personable, and eager to be helpful. The food is amazing! I will forever dream about their exquisite beef goulash! I love goulash, and the presentation here is like nothing I've ever experienced before. We started with a cheese plate, which was very nice. For dessert, we ordered the signature apricot pancakes smothered in chocolate sauce. In a word, Wow! Try It! You won't find that dessert anywhere else!

Like Demel, Cafe Central is a MUST visit when you go to Vienna, where the coffee houses are a sight to behold on their own. Yes, the wait is quite long. Every time I pass by, there's a line, but it actually goes rather quickly and if you can find something to do to pass the time, it's like nothing at all. First off, the interior is STRIKING, a work of art in its own right with marble columns, stylish looking cafe tables, and paintings every where you go. Apparently Sigmund Freud has been a frequent patron here. Even if you were to get nothing at all, just the experience of sitting here is worth your eyes absorbing. But, oh!--the cakes--and the coffees! I had me an iced coffee that had a great body mixed with a delicate flavor to give me a jolt through the day. The hazelnut cake was airy and fluffy, not at all too sweet like American desserts have a tendency to be! The staff here move efficiently, and I love how there's no pressure to hurry up and pay your bill or make your order. A repeat place to be sure if I were to go back to Vienna. My twin and I went on Sept '25 for our vacation.

The line moved pretty quickly, though, and I waited about 30 minutes. The interior is stunning. I was completely enamored with the architecture and the structure of the building. I was not overly hungry, but I wanted to try the goulash and the apple strudel. Get the strudel with the sauce. 10/10. Amazing. I would absolutely do it again.
