My friend and I had lunch at Ilona Stüberl when we were in Vienna a couple of weeks ago on vacation. The location is amazing - right in the heart of Innere Stadt, close to numerous attractions and in a lovely little street. We sat outside which made our meal lovely on a pretty day. The service was good, too, but the food was the highlight of this meal. Ilona Stüberl is a Hungarian restaurant that has been open in Vienna since 1957. And it's easy to see why. We enjoyed Hortobágy" style pancakes (crepes filled with minced meat and served with a paprika sauce), "Túrós" csusza (cottage cheese pasta with bacon), and crepes with apricot jam. Tasty Hungarian food. We visited Ilona Stüberl on a Sunday afternoon, and it was busy but there were tables available. We sat outside on their improvised patio where tables were closely packed together. The interior of the restaurant is small with dark wood paneling everywhere. I tried the Hungarian mushroom crème goulash with gnocchi. The goulash had a lovely flavor and the mushrooms were cooked just right. Overall, I would recommend Ilona Stüberl for Hungarian food in Vienna. read more

My favorite Hungarian bistro in Vienna is this little eatery on a tiny side street right in the heart of Vienna. The food at Ilona Stüberl is very tasty, the staff extremely friendly, and the atmosphere - well Hungarian! Just be aware it is very popular but with the Schanigarten available in warmer weather, it is then a bit easier to claim a table. Their Gulasch soup is superb. I usually get the small bowl but as I am nearing the end I am always wishing I had ordered the large bowl. My main course recently was a delicious Paprikás Csirke (Chicken paprikash) with Nokedli. Of course I generously added some genuine paprika from the spicy paprika condiment on the table. The Nokedli perfectly absorbed the excess sauce. I can def recommend this longtime Hungarian mainstay in the center of Vienna! Again keep in mind Illona Stüberl is super popular and not very big so have a little patience..... read more

My family of 6 stopped here for lunch because this Hungarian restaurant was highly rated on Yelp. I am glad we did because we enjoyed a nice Hungarian lunch outside. We started with three half liters of Zipfer draft beers for 4.60 euros each. I enjoyed their Rhindsgulasch for 13.50 euros. My family enjoyed the Schwelnsgulasch for 12.50, the Paprikahuhn for 13.50 and the Gelegtes Kraut for 12.50 euros. The Ujhazi Klein was 5 euros. My total bill was 89 euros. Pretty good food! I got the beef goulash per recommendation and was pleasantly surprised by how tender the beef was. My friend got the risotto and it tasted good! Note that it's not like Italian risotto. More similar to paella/rice. He ordered the normal and it was a huge portion! This tiny Hungarian restaurant is very welcoming and, as usual, I was impressed by the manager looking like he actually wanted to make money - they tried to squeeze people in whenever possible. Despite this service was swift except for when it came to get our bill. The dishes all come in small or normal sizes, but normal is massive so if you are getting a starter (which I recommend, as it allows you to try more of the interesting menu), then opt for small! I forgot to specify so we were brought normal size of everything and didn't get close to finishing our mains. For starters I got the bean soup (which also contains a load of sausage, so is not as modest as it sounds!) and bf got a kind of minced meat stuffed pancake/pasta thing which basically was like Hungarian lasagna and was really good. He also liked his goulash, which again contained bonus sausage. I was somewhat overwhelmed by the massive pieces of fried liver I received, but it was all very tasty and hearty food and I would really recommend for both the ambience and the dishes themselves. read more

While on our honeymoon in Austria, my husband found this place as we were looking for lunch nearby. We walked in and were immediately seated in the small and somewhat empty restaurant. We ordered the breaded mushrooms and special of the day - cabbage and sausage. Everything tasted great and we had a lovely time, up until the bill came. My husband had pointed to the small (10,50) on the menu when he ordered, but the check rang up for the large (13,50). He simply informed the waiter that he intended to order the small, had pointed to it when ordering, and asked if the bill could be adjusted; he didn't finish the dish as it was in fact too large - had he finished it, we would've ignored the charge. The waiter handled the situation very poorly, saying that he assumed we wanted the large. He was curt, and then threw the menu he was holding aggressively onto a nearby table. Tone is one thing, but I have NEVER once seen a waiter act out aggressively like this!! He stormed off and we were left sitting for a while, assuming the bill was being adjusted. A second waiter (possibly manager?) came by and we explained the situation. He chuckled and said "well it's too late" and prodded my husband to insert his credit card. At this point, I didnt even care about the 3 euros, I was more disappointed in the customer service this restaurant is operating on; no apology for the misunderstanding, no discussion, and definitely no adjusted receipt (which is not impossible) - just pure dismissal. We ended up paying the extra money because the situation was so gross we wanted to run out. Shame on you for treating customers this way while representing a restaurant with a family legacy. read more

OMG the Hortobagy pancake is off the hook - neither a pancake nor from Hortobágy, but a delicious crepe filled with a wonderful mince, all doused with the most delicious paprika sauce you've ever had! Split one for an appetizer. The rest of the food is just as good, and very faithful to Hungarian style - hearty food with a paprika twist! Service is excellent and food comes out fast. Oh my goodness, this is a fabulous find in Vienna! Small and cozy, I don't think this restaurant could accommodate 50 people at a time. The servers are charming and personable, and eager to be helpful. The food is amazing! I will forever dream about their exquisite beef goulash! I love goulash, and the presentation here is like nothing I've ever experienced before. We started with a cheese plate, which was very nice. For dessert, we ordered the signature apricot pancakes smothered in chocolate sauce. In a word, Wow! Try It! You won't find that dessert anywhere else! read more

Delicious food, great service. Everyone enjoyed their meals a lot. It tastes like someone's grandmother is cooking with the love. I ate the roast beef with fried onions and friend potatoes - I have never seen so many fried onions on a plate in my life - but it was so tasty. The beef goulash is wonderful too but I must say the layered cabbage with beef and sausage was by far the best thing we ordered. My mother also says the chicken soup was delish. My friend and I were in Vienna. I am of Hungarian background and was thrilled to find this restaurant. We went there to celebrate my Birthday. The food was outstanding. I wish I could have gone there more than once. Don't miss the Chicken Parikas and the Somloi Golushka (sp?) - best I've ever had. Bean soup is very hearty. I had the beef perkolt but two things you might otherwise overlook but is a must--. 1. The cucumber salad. Fantastic. This is the ultimative tourist tip for Vienna city. This tiny restaurant is located next to one of the main attractions of Vienna just off the Graben, a main posh shopping street in Vienna. It serves hungarian food, which is very spicy for fair prices which is amazing given its great location. There are only limited seats and the turn around is quick, but when it gets quieter later in the day, enjoy a glass of wine or a free spirit the staff offers when they are in the mood. read more

So my boyfriend and I visited Austria for a day and wanted to find some delicious stew to warm us up on this chilly, fall afternoon before we departed the city. After searching multiple restaurants as we walked around the city, we finally just looked up a place that offered Pork goulash (Since I do not eat Beef), and found this hole in the wall. The restaurant is cozy and family owned/run. They offer the menu in like 10 different languages, which was awesome, since my German boyfriend became tired of always translating everything for this American girl. ;) The goulash was delicious with very tender meat, and a hefty portion of gnocchi. HOWEVER, the service was less than SUBPAR. I mean, almost nonexistent. We basically got seated, ordered, and then forgotten. I even raised my hand for a quite a while trying to get the attention of the waitress, because we were on a time crunch and had to leave for the airport. Here is where this place lost an extra star. We waited almost 20 minutes to get our check and pay. About 10 minutes for her to even give us the check (which I had the money out and ready to go the moment she finally gave it to us), and then another 5 for her to come and take our money, and then another 5 for us to get our change. I will disclaim that there was a customer who had agitated the staff due to reasons unknown, after which the waitress retreated to the back to regain composure. (The view into the kitchen is open so the customers could very well see and be seen by those in the back. The place is really small, so it wasn't like we couldn't be seen, we were just not being serviced. Though the Goulash was decent, It wasn't enough to make up for the fact that we had missed our train due to waiting for the check and change for so long. This restaurant is near the U-train at Stephansplatz, so literally our tardiness was attributed to the service. If you just want to get good goulash and not care about service, then this place is a recommended-- the prices were decent. read more

Like our guidebook said, the food is good and it's homey (actually a little crowded!). We liked that you can get small or large portions, even at dinner time, which is nice when you're experiencing Vienna through food and you may not be starving for a huge meal! Very reasonably priced too. read more
