We were so happy to have the ability to sit inside and enjoy a coffee shop vibe. We walked by this place last night, after choosing the Bookstore Starbucks. illy is a quaint, upscale coffee shop. They sell a variety of coffees and treats including sandwiches. We selected the Apple danish, hot cocoa, caramel cream cold brew & red velvet cupcake. The danish had very little actual apple in it. The hot cocoa was good as was the cold brew Now the CUPCAKE!!! Y'all it was so moist I ended up asking for a fork. The cream cheese frosting was decadent but not overly sweet. The Illy Cafe is well-positioned at the end of Duke of Gloucester street near Willam and Mary. It is bright and inviting, with a distinctly European vibe. It has some outdoor patio seating in season. They have a nice offering of light food and beverages, including a nice selection of pastries and even some sandwiches. On a recent outing, my wife ordered a special coffee and a biscotti. I ordered a hot chocolate with a vanilla bomboloni (an Italian-style filled donut). My wife enjoyed her coffee and biscotti. My bomboloni was served warm and was tasty. A nice variation on the usual donut. The problem is that my hot chocolate was just, how do I say this??? BAD. It was little more than warm, dark brown water. There was no perceptible chocolate flavor. I poured it out. So the lesson here is: be careful ordering something out of the ordinary here. If you stick with coffee and pastries you'll probably be fine, but my experience with a non-coffee hot beverage was disappointing. read more

This is an Illy in the middle of Williamsburg. It's not going to be cute or cheap but the coffee is really excellent, and the baristas know what they're doing. We recently had mochas here, with oat milk, and were surprised how tasty they were -- not too sweet, and beautifully made. Every time we stop in, the coffee is reliably great. The restrooms are clean and bright, too, which is not to be taken for granted in a tourist area. But everything - everything! - is expensive in this cafe, hence one star off. read more

I went on a little day trip to Williamsburg with a friend and we stopped here a little after lunch for a drink. I wasn't sure what to expect before I walked in the door. I saw coffee advertised and at that time iced coffee sounded refreshing. My friend previously mentioned wanting to grab some dessert (ice cream). To our surprise there was gelato and pastries on deck. This little cafe gave me European vibes. I'm not sure if it's an Italian shop (I didn't do my research), but it was so cute and it had a variety of options! I wish I hadn't been so full from my lunch beforehand. Next time I visit Williamsburg I will make this my first stop for a coffee and chocolate croissant. My friend and I both got iced tea and a serving of gelato that we shared because we were so full. The gelato was refreshing and delicious. The tea was also good, not sure if it was just me but it had a hint of raspberry (may have been because of the gelato). Another great coffee shop located in Merchant's Square! It's centrally located near the College and DoG street with plenty of outdoor/indoor seating. The cafe has a bunch of different coffee drinks (breve, espresso, nitro, regular, viennese, etc), aperitifs, non-alcoholic cocktails and cold drinks. All are Illy brand. There is also a selection of some breakfast sandwiches, croissants, scones, muffins, frittatas, similar to other coffee shops. The line was a bit slow, but the drinks and food was ready fairly quicky once ordered. I like that they serve drinks/food with glassware with the option of to go cups. My cappuccino was delicious and a came in several sizes. I also had a heated veggie frittata. It was tastier than it looked but fairly small for the price. Would probably just stick to the drinks next time. I really liked the decor inside with cool chandeliers made from Illy cups, mirrors and walls. Definitely a good addition to the area. read more

I really liked this coffee ahop. They have a large and diverse selection of coffee and food. I got adventurous and tried the lavender mint caffe latte and it was surprisingly super good!! There was a light hint of lavender but overall yummy and not overly sweet but perfect. My husband got the cappuccino (I forgot what it was fully called) that had whipped cream and cocoa powder on top and he said it was good but tasted like a normal cappuccino. Really excited that they put a Illy Cafe here. They serve pastries, sandwiches, salads, tea, coffee and even alcoholic beverages plus gelato. Very crowded during our visit. Only complaint was there were dirty dishes by the sugar station and dirty tables which weren't cleaned. It would help if they had a space where people could drop their dirty cups or dishes off in a busser tub or something similar in the back. Our coffee drinks were all very good and employees were nice. Would definitely recommend and will visit again. read more

Service unlike their drinks can be inconsistent on the weekends. Weekdays seemed to be the better time to visit. The drinks are done well and I like how they stayed true to how things are made like back in Europe. The food goes well with the drinks but it's nothing to write about. We stopped here to pick up a quick bite to hold us over until brunch later in the afternoon. We ordered 3 croissants one with ham and cheese which had very sparse amounts of ham and cheese. A croissant with a vegetable cheese egg patty. The vegetables were stringy and chewy which made the texture off putting. The other croissant had a sausage and egg patty which was ok in flavor but didn't fit the size of the croissant. Everything was mediocre at best and the price per croissant was $11 each including tax which I felt was excessive for what was served. I will skip this place in the future. This is an awesome place for coffee, but it can be quite crowded on the inside at times. Have someone get a seat while you order if possible. First, I absolutely LOVE their coffee. Hands down, no question to it they have amazing coffee. My choice of flavor is the vanilla cloce latte. Every time I'min Williamsburg I stop here, easily, twice a day and often bring others with me to try the coffee. What isn't appreciated, and what has dropped my opinion of them, is that their hours on Google says they open at 7 am, but at 7 they have a line of people and look annoyed that they have to open the door. That kind of stuff embarrassed me for recommending them and has me reconsidering my loyalty to them. While I appreciate that on Yelp the hours are updated, but on Google Maps, which nearly everyone uses as evident by the line, the hours are still 7 am. It never even hit me to look at Yelp for possibly alternate hours. So there it is. Great coffee, but...there is still room for improvement elsewhere. I'll be back a few more times and will keep you posted for any other updates, changes or otherwise. read more

Really cool atmosphere! If you don't mind paying a little more then you are in for a treat! I loved my affogatto and my husband enjoyed his double espresso shot. The staff was helpful and even tried to figure out what a cafe corretto (corrected coffee) was for my husband. Maybe they could add that to their menu in the future. As our first time here we are coffee heads, the atmosphere is rather unique and artful. They have unique coffee cup chandeliers, and coffee art that covers the walls. Beautiful tile star flooring, when we approached the counter I informed the girl I'd never been here before and she offered up her favorites. I ended up getting the Lavender mint Cafe Latte with almond milk, and it was actually quite a nice combination of both flavors. Not overly hot that way you wouldn't have to worry of burning yourself. I'm between 3.5 and 4 on this one because I've had just one visit here. I'm sure there will be more. Great atmosphere and ambiance at this new coffee shop in Merchants Square. They have coffee, espresso, snacks, and desserts. The espresso is easily the best in town. The seating is adequate, which gives Illy a light edge over nearby Aromas. I had a large Americano and my daughter had a gelato. Both were excellent, but the bill was nearly $8.50 after tax. So, a ding for very high prices (though this is to be expected in Williamsburg). Horrible! We ordered regular coffee that tasted like hotel coffee. IT was super water down with no flavor. We ordered the croissants and I can say they tastes a lot like the Starbucks cafe croissants. They were good. All egg sandwiches are pre-made like Starbucks but the eggs were just ok, then again they were once frozen. We also ordered the apple turnover pastry yet again no flavor. For the price of 56.00 for two egg sandwiches, two water down coffees, two croissants and 2 apple turnovers, we should have went to First Watch and we wouldn't have to eat sandwiches that came out of a package. The young lady that took my order said "have a seat and we'll call when it's ready" yet I had to go back to ask them for my order if it was ready 15 minutes later . First off, love love love Illy Coffee. When I ventured up to Williamsburg from Va. Beach and discovered they had an Illy Cafe I was excited. I love a good espresso. Even during this whole pandemic I've continued to go up and enjoy the coffee/espresso. However, my spirits are continually soured when I go there because the manager is inept, unknowledgable about coffee and just a pure unfriendly person. Her name is Claire, be warned.
