UGH! I am so annoyed at this place. First, let me start by saying that my stylist, Jennie was AWESOME! She is talented, nice, and very easy to talk to. If this Yelp review was for her and the haircut I got, I would give her FIVE STARS. Unfortunately, Jennie alone cannot save this sucky place. I bought a voucher from Amazon local and made my appointment. With limited hours for appointments (for convenience sake, minus one star), I planned on my Saturday appointment. As I was driving there, I was struck by another vehicle. I wasn't able to get to the appointment. I called on Monday to explain what had happened and was told that there are no exceptions to the cancellation policy and since I "no showed," I could no longer get the deal that I had bought (the voucher would still be good for the amount I paid, I just don't get all the services that I was awarded in buying the voucher). I felt there should have been some exception made (I could have provided medical documentation or the car repair bills to back up my story if they were skeptical), but alas, there wasn't. Minus one star. I get to the location and they made me wait over half an hour for my appointment. Now, if you are going to have a rigid policy on punctuality and attendance, I think that should go both ways. I would have liked for them to accept the voucher, or even apologize for the wait, but the guy behind the counter didn't do any of that. They just said, "take a seat and she'll be right with you." And that was that. So for the wait, minus one star. That puts us at two stars. Like I said, I really like Jennie, so if I was desperate for a haircut, I might come back, but it isn't my first choice and I definitely will not be a regular. HAIR GOOD, OWNER SERVICE POOR, MANI/PEDI POOR.... I'm really hesitant to write this review but I figured I should share my experience. I came in here with my Groupon coupon and had made a reservation for 2 for a spa day with my mother. I explicitly asked the person on the phone if we could do everything together at the same time when I made my appointment and he said yes (I think it was a he). Today my mom and I came in excited to spend some time together on time for our 11AM appointment. A Vietnamese gentleman at the front desk greeted us and I assume he is the owner. He acknowledged our appointments and we waited. Then they called my mom to start her manicure, started another random lady on her pedicure and I was asked to go do my blow-out and style....hmm...is that what they think "doing everything together means"???? Anyway after much dispute, I was really turned off by the owner trying to make excuses and stating it was a mis-communication versus just apologizing for their mistake. 40 min later we got to do everything together and to be honest the blond hair stylist saved the whole outlook of service in this salon. She was very apologetic even up until we left and she did awesome work on my hair. The blow out, style, massage, information, and product usage were all great. My hair feels moisturized with lots of body! I got compliments on it during the day. My moms was good also, so we were both happy with that part. On to manis/pedis....the chairs for the pedis are really nice, the massaging is a decent length and the process is good, but my cuticle on one of my fingers was cut too deep and I bled (she didn't say anything). Also, the nail polish wasn't of very high quality and both my mom's and mine already chipped. The two ladies doing nails also told us it was dry and ready to go even though they had no hand dryers for some odd reason and both of us got nicks within the first like 2 min of leaving the salon even though we were extremely careful. It was a pretty disappointing experience. The reason why I was hesitant to write this review is because besides the owner, everyone was super super nice and really friendly, but I think people should know what happened especially if they have a Groupon Coupon. read more

I liked her, made another appt with her, and when I showed up got the owner. I really don't like making an appt with someone and not be told I won't get them when I make the appt. I bought a deal online for waxing. I decided to get my 2nd Brazilian ever since I was going to FL for a beach vacation. The times I could book were very limited because the said only one girl does it. The girl was very kind and she took me back early. However, she did not do a good job. I am not hairy, but technically it was not a true Brazilian, she did not go all the way back. She also did not pay attention to detail at all!!!! There were hairs left in places when it should have all been gone. And because she did not go back over it, the hair grew back in quickly. I have been going to Jennie (owner) for a couple of years now - she is meticulous and I consistently walk out with a great style. At this point I don't need to give much guidance - I trust her enough to just let her do what she thinks looks best for me and have not been disappointed. Appointments are usually available a week out and parking is ample and free in the garage, even on a sunny day when the lake is packed. The space is gorgeous and clean...with an excellent view of Green Lake (which, BTW, is right across the street). Everyone there is nice, friendly, and professional. I always go in for a cut with Jenny. I have tried going to cut my hair at Great Clips and such to save money, but I had bad experiences there. A cut at Illustrated may be a bit more expensive, but it's worth avoiding a butchering anywhere else. Jenny is so sweet, nice, and a true perfectionist. She is meticulous about giving you the perfect layers..and it pays off. She's willing to work with you on whatever style you want and has ideas when you're feeling indecisive. They also use the best products on your hair-all Bumble and Bumble and Aveda (which they also sell in house) When you leave, you not only get a hair cut that is pretty and easy to take care of, but you leave having your hair feel completely clean, healthy, and smelling fantastic! I'd never had a facial before, but after finding a great deal on Groupon for the Renewal Facial at Illustrated Salon Spa, I decided it was time to change that. SO happy I did. The Renewal Facial is 60 minutes, and it was definitely very blissful. Catalina was super sweet, and she definitely made a facial-virgin feel comfortable. She asked me lots of questions about my skin and skin regimes, and just generally put me at ease. She also asked if there was anything I wanted to work on in particular. Finding out I had been carrying a lot of stress in my face, she spent extra time on the facial massage, and it definitely made a difference. She was also really receptive to the fact that I was there for relaxation and not conversation, and that's something I can appreciate. I didn't especially love the little room where the facial took place. It was right off the hair salon, and although they were playing some "spa" music, I could still hear what was going on outside, and that was somewhat distracting. Also, the music skipped every 3 minutes or so - also distracting. And annoying. Overall, this was a great experience, especially when I noticed how amazing my skin looked a few days later. Really, my skin was glowing in a way it hasn't in a long time. And the facial massage was an incredible stress-reliever. Props to Catalina! read more

Love Jenny! I have long, fine hair that most stylists have a hard time cutting to create body & movement. Jenny did a great job of listening to my preferences, but made a few changes (I told her I was open to suggestions) that were exactly what my hair needed. (This one awkward area where my hair always flips out funny and looks heavy - she fixed it!) She was meticulous and paid attention to detail, but it didn't take her forever. I took my boyfriend's son back a few weeks later - he has super thick hair and she did a great job of thinning it out and taming it. Also, for a person who isn't a big fan of small talk, I really enjoyed chatting with her. And it was a nice, light cheery space. I had a Groupon when I went, but her regular price seems fair compared to most places in Seattle. My first cut with her was back in December, I can't wait to go back next week on my birthday for another cut! read more

It was a Saturday morning in early fall, and I decided I wanted bangs. Needing help in finding a salon that could handle this most spontaneous of decisions, I turned to Yelp. I called Illustrated after reviewing their Yelp ratings and Jennie got me in that afternoon. She was normally quite pricey for what I'm used to paying ($65 cut) but I had purchased a deal ($45 for $65) so that took the edge off a bit. After having my hair cut by Jennie, however, I would gladly pay the $65 to have it cut by her again! I have painfully thin hair- I swear I only have like ten hairs on my head- but Jennie made it look like I had millions of them! And they moved around flirtatiously when I moved my head from side to side! She also did a FABULOUS job on the bangs- and offered to trim them anytime FOR FREE. I've been battling my hair my entire life.. It's fine, thin, and generally doesn't want to do anything besides hang there limply in oily clumps. Most hair stylists I've gone to have worked against its natural qualities, trying to use the power of products and hair dryers to make it something it's not. Then, magically, I found Jennie at Illustrated Salon and she someone managed to make me love my hair. I went here for the first time last week, and I got a great cut from Jennie. For once I've even had success recreating the look on my own! I'm new to Seattle, so I was happy that the first hair cut I got here was good. The salon is lovely, but I was a bit surprised by how quiet it was. Jennie seemed to be the only stylist working when I got my cut (late morning on a Friday, which I would assume would usually be a busy time, although I usually work then so don't have first-hand experience). The first time I went in to try to book an appointment, I couldn't even get anyone's attention. I stood at the front desk for a few minutes, spent some time looking at the Bumble products, and walked back out the door. I'm glad I went back, but that almost turned me off for good. The salon is also a little pricey. You get ten dollars off on your first cut, 30 off your first color, but I might look for a cheaper place before I go back and have to pay full price. read more

Got a hair cut by Jennie--great cut. But when I went to pay, things went awry. The hair cut suddenly cost a lot more than what they quoted me over the phone. I told her what I was quoted over the phone--and she said, "yes but it cost extra for long hair". I was immediately upset--as in this economy, we're all watching our pennies--and no one told me this over the phone. And since when is shoulder length hair considered "long"? I decided I could get over it--but then, I went to pay with my gift certificate. She said the gift certificate is worth 15% less for processing fees. Now I felt like I was being screwed--I had asked about the gift certificates when I called earlier that day and was told it was only 10% for the processing fees. She looked at me like "sorry, but there's nothing I can do". But when I told her this, suddenly, the gentleman who was standing behind her this entire time overhearing our conversation (the same guy who quoted me both of these things over the phone) turned around and said, "ya, I told her it was only going to be 10%". If I hadn't said anything--she would have charged me the 15% and he wouldn't have argued! I was excited to try this local salon for a lip wax instead of my usual trip to French Nails in shoreline. The wax seemed weird when I got it and I awoke the next day with raw red spots that have now scabbed and look awful. I went in the next day to show the redness to Jennie who told me I must be allergic! (No offer of refund) I get waxes monthly and am not allergic. I found Illustrated after a lot of online research and liked what I saw, including the products they sell. The Prive products are great. I was matched with a terrific stylist who took her time with me and always sent me away delighted with my results. At my last visit, she announced that she was moving away. For the prices they charge, I didn't feel terribly compelled to go back and try a new stylist. My only criticisms would be their indifference in keeping me as a client (nobody said a word to me as I checked out.) and the filthy restroom that is out in a back hallway. read more

First of all, the moment I walked into the salon, a Vietnamese man, who I assumed was the owner, snapped his fingers at me and pointed to a chair, very rudely while he talked on his cell phone. I sat down on one of the couches and started flipping through the magazines they had to offer. There was no one else there, it seemed. I have never seen a salon so empty on a Saturday before! After 30 minutes of waiting, my stylist, Jenni approached me and brought me back for my color, cut, and eyebrow wax. I wanted my hair very light blonde so she started putting foils of bleach in my hair. At first it was going okay, other than the awkward silence. She didn't say two words to me after I told her what I wanted! Then my scalp started to sting and burn. I asked her if it was supposed to burn and she said, and I quote, "Well, its not supposed to feel good." I was in shock! I mean how rude? Finally she took me over to the shampoo bowl and snapped at a girl who she called "Shampoo Girl". What was with the snapping! This "Shampoo Girl", who seemed irritated began to shampoo my hair. Jenni came around the other side and started waxing my eyebrows...at the shampoo station!!! It was like a freaking chop shop or something! Overall the cut was okay, a little shorter than I had asked for. The color turned out okay but, hurt in the process. The service and business ethic was the worst I've ever experienced and the extremely high prices were definitely not worth the trouble. LOVE LOVE LOVE Jenny!!! I bought a living social voucher for a deep conditioning and a hair cut. Normally I feel like services through a discount website can be hurried and not so great. Not here. I called on a Tuesday and they were able to get me in on a Thursday evening after work. The only reason for not giving it 5 stars was that I got a call on Thursday morning telling me that the person that was going to do it was out and they needed to change the apt. I was going out of town the next morning so I wasn't able to go the next day. They suggested 2 hours earlier which didn't work due to work. Then he said he would call me back and they fit me in at 5:30. I left work a bit early so I got there about 5:05 which I thought would be better. I ended up waiting until right at 5:30 but it was worth it. I was the only person there which was a bit odd but I didn't really mind. I have SUPER THICK really long hair. Jenny did the best hair cut ever and in record time. Normally people cut and re-cut and cut some more. The deep conditioning was amazing plus a really great shampoo. I left in just about 1 hour and 15 minutes which was also great. My service didn't feel rushed at all but also didn't drag on. I will be back!! read more

Very knowledgable and offered me advice for skin care routine. The facial itself left my skin looking fresh, and i loved the massage she did with it. I went to Illustrated on a whim after work yesterday and was able to walk-in for a cut. I didn't have anything drastic done, only a trim, but Mandy was super helpful. I loved the way she styled my hair, it looked natural and effortless, I might even be going back for a blow-out for an event next month. They also offer tea while you wait. I realize many other places offer the same services and such, but I love the Aveda products they used, and my hair has never felt healthier after a salon visit, so I will definitely be going again. read more

I bought 3 facials for $99 on Groupon at Illustrated. I had two different estheticians for the three facials and both were wonderful and each lasted over an hour (which is awesome for $33). I dealt with the owners at the desk for each visit and they were very nice and accommodating. I had no problem getting appointments for the times that I needed them and none were changed or cancelled. I get my brows done every 4-6 weeks and get a facial 3-6 times a year. At this salon, I've only been seen by Emily and thank god for her! She is such a talented esthetician. She listens to my wishes and has NEVER messed up my brows (if you have ever gotten an undesired chunk of brown removed by a bad wax, you know how important that is) She always listens to my skincare concerns and spends just the right amount of time teaching me about how oily/dry my skin is, how to prevent acne, what products would be best to use, and how I can adapt my skincare routine with the season changes for the best looking skin possible. As far as giving Emily a rating is concerned, I would give her a 5. The only thing preventing me from doing that is the management. I can't count the number of times I've called in to ask the price for something only to have the owner respond rudely with, "look it up online, we have the prices there." That's fantastic, BUT I asked you the prices. He is the owner of a service-operated business, I expect him to treat his customers with the utmost respect. When Emily leaves this salon, I'm going with her. His attitude and behavior (constant talking on his cell phone, ignoring clients when they approach the front desk, being rude to employees, just to name a few) have rubbed me the wrong way every time I've been into the salon. read more

I used a LivingSocial coupon last month to give the salon a try. The esthetician was young and sweet, but professional. I enjoyed my facial and would have gone back, especially because the esthetician told me about a $50 off deal that had for first-time clients who book a second appt. But they lost my appointment for today. This isn't a crisis and I understand that things happen; I'm just glad I thought to call and double check--after i left work--but before I arrived. But I had stood at the counter and watched the owner (?) enter my name in the appointment book and write me out a reminder card, and I was really looking forward to having another affordable facial today. ($120 for a facial is too steep for my budget normally.) I think that if you have a good deal, it would be worth it to try Illustrated Salon, provided the other reviews are enticing to you. "There are some people who just should not cut hair," is what the hairdresser who tried to correct Jennie's awful haircut said to me. Jennie gave me a haircut that was over-thinned, choppy, and uneven. To correct it, my medium length hair became short which has taken over a year to grow back out! Because I previously had a couple of good haircuts from Jennie, I requested that she look and see why it wasn't "styling right". When I went back to the salon, Jennie was very demeaning, rough with my hair and told me nothing was wrong with the haircut in front of the other customer and refused to fix it! The best thing to happen to this Salon was when Darren Keough joined them. What an assest he is to the Salon. Darren has the latest techniques and a true eye for color and style and with all lnatural products!!! Spend and hour with Darren and you will feel and look like a million dollars. The hair cuts start with a shoulder and scalp massage that is incredible and then if you are getting color you get a hand massage too! And to top it ofhe cuts your hair so you can duplicate the look.
