Trust me, just don't buy anything here if you want to save yourself a headache. Just don't.

Was told on the phone they could do an admin. password reset for a macbook pro. Got there and the tech said it would take a week to get done because "it's not that simple"- actually it is and I explained that I lost the discs required to do said reset, when confronted with someone who knew what they were talking about the tech got very rude and was utterly unhelpful. Went to Best Buy Geek Squad, even tho they didn't have the disc required they were still able to remove the password thru terminal. Total repair time: less than 30 min. Avoid the Illini Union Tech Zone they are disrespectful to users who they don't think are naïve and can be taken for a ride. Go to Best Buy they are MUCH more friendlier and respectful. read more

I purchased my macbook pro two weeks ago here. While I was there, the manager was yelling at an employee who was trying to help a customer and making frustrated faces at him. Four days later I open my laptop's screen and the LCD cracks. I bring it into the IU tech zone in hopes of an exchange, seeing as the computer was so new and I had purchased apple care for it. The same woman approaches me, grabs the computer from me and points out invisible "Dents and scratches on all four corners of the computer". There is no damage on the laptop, I explained to her that I had never dropped the computer and that the malfunction occurred when I simply lifted the lid of the laptop. She rolled her eyes, spoke to me in a very rude tone of voice from the beginning. I told her not to yell at me and that I wanted to speak to her supervisor. The supervisor came out and did not address her inappropriate behavior, and only said that he could not help me and to contact apple directly. The customer relations in this business are terrible. The fact that they hide their negative Yelp reviews really drives the point home! read more

My macbook pro recently had some issues with loading to the desktop after I attempted to update to the new system, so I brought it into the Illini Union Tech Zone asking if they could fix it. It took them three full days to get back to me with the diagnostic test results, which cost me $30 (non-refundable). In the diagnostic results, they claimed that my hard drive was failing and needed to be replaced for $140 and to recover data that's an extra $120, they also recommended a battery replacement for $134. I didn't have time to wait for them to order a new hard drive and have it shipped, so I decided to bring my laptop back to the local apple store and let them take a look. The local apple store ran a diagnostic test, fixed my laptop and installed the new system for me within 2 hours for $0. That's right, $0! Knowing that the Illini Union Tech Zone carries mostly apple products, it's honestly quite surprising to see that their technicians don't seem to be as familiar with the products as they should be? And they're giving poor, costly advice to students. I wouldn't go back there again. BTW, I asked the apple technician and he said it would only be $100 to recover data. TLDR: Check out other places before you come here to get your laptop/macbook fixed, the fees are outrageous & the technicians don't seem as competent. read more

Tech zone is great because it is a bunch of students who can relate to other students and genuinely understand the needs of their customers. I've been here time and time again for purchases big and small and they have always been extremely helpful! 10/10 read more

I spilled coffee on my laptop and came here because they opened earlier than Simply Mac (at the mall). Though my laptop probably would have still died even if I took it to Simply Mac, and though the diagnostic fee is $10 cheaper, I probably would have gotten better service overall at Simply Mac (based on my previous experience with them). I found the guy who worked on my laptop (Jim) to be impatient and borderline rude. The data on my MacBook was safe after the spill, so I brought in an external hard drive for it to be copied over. He assumed it wouldn't work with my Mac because I had used it on my PC before. I told him I had used it on my Mac, he went ahead and plugged it but said it wasn't showing up. I asked him to try again, and it did (though it was a little slow to show up). I asked him to transfer "everything" (not fully knowing how much of "everything" could be transferred). When I went to pick up the laptop, he wasn't there so I asked his coworkers what was transferred, and they said files, applications, software. It turns out he only transferred the files. When I called to ask him about it (just for an informative explanation and not to accuse him of wrongdoing), he seemed defensive and impatient in having to explain to me why he only transferred the files. When I asked about the possibility of transferring the other data (again, just for information), his primary concern was to inform me that I would be charged for it because it would take "MY time" to transfer the files when he should have transferred everything the first time around. In any case, I don't trust that they do a thorough job at this place nor do they have good customer service. read more
