I really want to like Illegal Pete's because I have several friends that like to go here regularly but I can't find anything on the menu worth eating except the chips & queso. I've been a regular for years and have always loved the staff. But over the past few months it seems things have fallen apart. I hate to write a negative review about somewhere I love and have frequented for so long but recently Illegal Petes DU is not the place I fell in love with. I came in last Thursday night and experienced some of the worst customer service ever. Everyone seemed very unorganized and confused, and the guy with the dreadlocks on the register was very rude and kept pointing and yelling at us as we tried to order the rest of our food. I understand this is a fast paced restaurant but the way he treated us made us very uncomfortable and unwanted. Probably going to drive the extra 5 minutes to the Broadway location from here on. read more

I went from the worst experience I had had at this place to the absolute best! I went in today for lunch and a guy with an awesome mustache and trimmed beard gave me the best service ever!!! He walked me through options and made suggestions at every step. Told me he enjoyed doing the plating of a bowl and he did make it look pretty - but most importantly it was delicious! Really good vibes! Lots of DU students. A relaxing atmosphere filled with great food! So many choices! I had the shredded beef burrito & it was as big as chipotle & about the same price when added guac and green chile. All the ingredients tasted fresh & delicious. My favorite part was that the mix all your ingredients then fold it so not everything is on one side! Only dislike was the black beans were not cooked all the way so they were kinda harder. My wife and I ate for the first time at Illegal Pete's in the DU area on December 9 before a concert at the Newman Center. She had a chicken burrito and I had fish. Both of our burritos were cold; not even lukewarm. She asked an employee if he could heat it up in the microwave and he replied that they don't have a microwave. He put it on the grill for only a couple minutes, but that didn't help. I just ate my fish burrito cold; as we didn't have time for them to remake it. The margaritas were GREAT! Maybe that's their thing - cold margaritas and cold burritos? I don't expect to return. read more

These reviews by and large baffle me. Better than Chipotle/Qdoba? Not at all. The food is similar, as is the concept. It does win in the full liquor offerings, but I've never drank here, so I can't comment on that. What I can comment on is the service (sloppy at best, condescending at worst), food (subpar), and cleanliness (the worst of the three...the two times I've been, the line was disheveled, the dining area needed wiped down, etc.). This location isn't great, but I didn't care for the one in Boulder, either, so I guess I'm just not down with the Illegal Pete's. read more

Chipotle with a bar. The tacos are great, the sopapillas are even better (and cheap, though they take a while to make). It's mainly a fast food tex-mex place, not a bar, though it looks like it from the outside. read more

I've always loved Illegal Petes until today. We first called in to order over the phone. The person on the other side said " Its our lunch hour, do you know of our mobile app." After telling him that I did not want to put in credit card information they finally got someone over the phone to take my order. When I went to pick it up, they had no rice or beans in the big potato bowl which clearly says it comes with rice and beans. When we got back we saw some extra protein - a strand of hair in our food! Gross!! While they did replace all our meals,they put the returned bowls right back in the heater!!!! Not sure I'm going back there! Food is great, service not so much. Pretty darn good burrito with a bar to boot. I'm not a local so this was my first time at illegal Petes. Got the steak burrito--far and away better than chipotle both because of taste/value and the fact that it didn't give me the runs. Still no Anna's taqueria though (a Boston staple which for my money is the best burrito in America, yes better than el farolito and others in the mission in SF). To return to the point though, this is a groovy spot with good food and drink for a decent enough price. read more

You can't go wrong here! Delicious burritos and beer! Typical worn hardwood floors given the close location of DU. Lots of college kids, so probably don't want to bring your kids unless you want them to learn some vulgar language. Green chile is amazing too! My husband and I eat here alot. If you want something fast and fresh then you'll love this place. Everything we've tried here has been really good. My husband loves the fish tacos(fried when you order them). I love the fajita burrito, pesto burrito, and taquitos. I don't know why anyone would go next door to Chipotle when they could come here. I like the Illegal Pete's concept very much, despite the sad fact that I don't fit squarely into their current hipster target market. This store, however, is not the best of the bunch. It is pretty dirty (note a pretty thick layer of greasy dust on the cash registers), and there's a horrible smell emanating from the restrooms (apparently they are in a pissing match with the city over who is supposed to fix the sewer line. I don't really care who fixes it, but the stench of sewer gas is pretty unappetizing.) The new store on Broadway is more appealing, but they have a parking problem. Sigh, such first world problems. read more

I love going to this Illegal Pete's. The staff are incredibly friendly and always up to help you with whatever you need. I love going here and grabbing a margarita and some chips before heading home. The bar tenders and kitchen staff really work to learn your names and every time I go in there I feel so important when they know exactly what I want. Definitely worth hitting up. read more

We were just trying to enjoy lunch at illegal petes when the staff decided the area we were sitting in was closed. There was no sign or rope or cone or any indication that the area was closed. Rather than ask us and the other table there to relocate, they started spraying tables all around us with chemical cleaners and loudly stacking chairs near us. It was very rude and we were obviously being intentionally rushed out. Just as they started tossing mop water around the floor near us we decided we had to go. I called the store and tried to tell the manager what had happened but she seemed to have cared less. She said the area was closed even though there was no indication of that and made no apologies for our being treated so rudely and basically rushed out of the lunches we just paid for. I felt the staff was rude and handled the situation incorrectly, the manager was rude and handled the situation incorrectly, and I felt like my business isn't valued whatsoever.
