Fried Artichokes (front) and Calamari (back)
Shirlane C.

I came here with some friends in the hopes for an amazing time and boy did we have a TIME. While I had high hopes for this place, almost every portion of the meal was a spectacular failure. Before I dive into the poor culinary experience, let's chat about the location. Buckle up, you're about to get a very detailed review of my experience. TLDR; great location but mediocre drinks and food, plus lack of communication from waitstaff. il Casale is in the heart of Lexington Center right next to the CVS. There is plenty of street parking (both metered and free) nearby. Currently the lot behind the meters spots behind the CVS is free so parking was a breeze. I would not recommend trying to take public transit to get here as its not the most convenient method of transit around here. They have a beautiful patio set up with many of the tables covered by tents or umbrellas. We sat outside as the weather was holding up and prepared ourselves for what we thought would be a fantastic experience. Now that I've set the scene for you, let's dive into the drinks. We ordered a lemonade, iced tea (unsweetened), and sangria. None of the drinks were a knock out and it should be called out that the lemonade was $7 and they failed to mention that there weren't free refills. We spent a whooping $14 on two glasses of lemonade. That's more expensive than buying a large lemonade at a state fair where they jack up prices! Moving onto food, for appetizers we ordered the fried artichoke and calamari. The fried artichokes were severely under seasoned and they looked significantly darker than the calamari, almost like someone had forgotten them for an extra minute while they were in the fryer. The fried calamari also lacked seasoning. So far we were 0/2 but we persevered on and moved to our entrees. Beware, the entrees are pricy for the quality - my detailed thoughts and feelings will be fully exposed. For my entree, I ordered the Spaghetti con Vongole. It arrived looking picturesque but there were several elements that sent it downhill after my initial picture. The spaghetti was super chewy, to the point that I spent more time chewing the pasta than the clams. I still have all my original teeth/no jaw problems and it felt like a workout. This dish should come with a warning: If you have dentures or TMJ, this will cause pain. Additionally, they didn't provide any dish or bowl for the clam shells, therefore I was forced to pile them awkwardly in one side of my dish and eat around them. I would give this a 1/5 as the flavor of the dish was the only part that wasn't garbage. Two of my friends got to the Tagliatelle Bolognese and neither of them finished their dishes. They were gracious enough to let me sample some of it and I fully understand why they didn't finish. First off, it felt SO dry, almost like someone took ground beef, tossed in some tomato paste and added in some pasta. Usually the sauce coats the pasta creating a perfectly twirl-able dish. This dish gets a 0/5 in twirl-ability. Midway through my already dried bite, I got the horrific textural experience of biting down on hard pasta. While the tagliatelle was beautifully cut, it was unevenly cooked. While some pieces were the perfect al dente, other pieces were harder and felt as they were undercooked or had been left out and had dried out. This was a 0/5. The last member of my party got the eggplant parmigiana and when I asked her about the dish she just responded with "I wouldn't come back here". I didn't get anymore details but seems like her entree aligned with the rest of our experiences. While we didn't stick around for dessert, the bill provided sticker shock as it was over $200 (3 drinks - only 1 alcoholic, 2 apps, 4 entrees). Remember the $14 spent on two glasses of lemonade? Yeah, they also add a 4% fee on every item due to covid. Save your money and time and skip il Casale Cucina Campana + Bar.

Caprese salad

Il Casale was my pre-concert 'plan B' as Mario's was unexpectedly closed for repairs. They could only accommodate me at the bar as this is a popular dining spot prior to shows at Cary Hall. Met several other friendly concert- goers at the bar. The caprese salad was good as was the hard Italian soda- somewhat of a unique find. I asked for a dessert recommendation the the bartender informed me he didn't eat sweets. He did need up recommending something. As a former server myself, I could always advise what I liked or popular menu items- I appreciate when servers can at least tell me the popular items. The cake was good- not amazing. The limoncello was house made and you can tell as I also make my own. It was very good. Service was average at the bar- the bartenders seem to struggle a bit with food orders and checking back to verify what was ordered, missing checks, etc. they were good at making drinks.

Cheese plate appetizer

Came here for the first time for dinner on a weeknight. We ordered the cheese plate appetizer, a pasta dish with beef and mirpioux, cacio e pepe salad, sea bass, black forest cake dessert, panna cotta dessert, and tiramisu. We ordered a couple of drinks and coffee, as well. What's Hot - Quality. Pretty delish! My salad was delicious with shredded cheese, cherry tomatoes, and celery. A cacio e pepe salad isn't a very common dish, but the menu description made it sound good. And it was. Their desserts were very good! The panna cotta dessert had a balsamic reduction drizzled on the side with the strawberries, which made it a unique flavor. It looks like their desserts are either made in-house or locally, which is even better for freshness and taste. - Menu. Pretty good variety and not an overly complicated and long menu. Something for everyone- meats, vegans, vegetarians, and gluten free. There appears to be a good drinks list and their dessert menu is pretty good, as well. Their dessert menu is separate, so you do need to ask for it. - Health and safety. During this time of the pandemic, all their staff wore masks. There's also a sign on the door that states customers are required to wear masks indoors. Once we were seated and eating, we took our masks off. Tables appear to be somewhat spaced out. When we were there, the tables next to us remained empty. Don't know if it was conscious or just the fact that it was dinner on a weeknight, but there you have it. It appears they're making a very good faith effort in complying with health and safety standards. - Layout. Pretty spacious and not cramped, which is nice, especially during this time of the pandemic. - Service. The staff that served us were all nice. They answered our questions and took care of what we asked for- more water, more utensils, etc... But it appears that they're short staffed. What's Not - Cheese plate appetizer. Not worth it. For $18, it was 3 pieces of different cheeses, toasted bread, candied fruit, pistachios, a few pieces of sliced peaches, all drizzled with honey. It didn't taste bad, but it wasn't what we expected from the menu. There wasn't a good variety of cheeses and the portions of the cheese were small, which didn't help to share in the tasting. - Prices. Our friend paid, so I didn't get to confirm the total, but I'm pretty sure it cost over $100. Friend's sea bass was around $34, the cheese plate was $18, the cider drink was $9 a glass, the black forest cake was $12, tiramisu and panna cotta was around $10. My point is that it's easy for your total to add up quickly, because this isn't a place where one dish will make you full. - Parking. There's street and metered parking nearby, but it is in downtown Lexington. Main thing to be aware of is that it will cost you and you need to be aware of the time, which can be inconvenient. - Service. During this time of the pandemic, it didn't look like they have enough wait staff. For us, it meant that it took longer for us to flag down wait staff to get what we wanted. Final Answer Willing to come back again, but probably only for special occasions, because of the price.

Prosciutto plate

We stumbled on this place as we were going next door but they had no power so we ate here instead. This was a happy accident. Not sure why this did not pop up when we were searching for places in the area. The service was good, attentive and helpful. I went here for dinner with a work friend as we were both in from out of town. We shared a Burrata appetizer and prosciutto plate that were both delicious. The prosciutto was probably some of the best I have ever had- very fresh and sliced perfectly. It literally felt like it melted in your mouth. I ordered the bolognese because why not when it says it's a 8+hour sauce? It was very flavorful but I could barely eat half as we were so full from the excellent dense bread and apps. My companion had a pasta with a light sauce, cherry tomatoes and shrimp- he ate every last bit of it. It was a tad on the more expensive side but overall it was a nice evening out with good food and a nice atmosphere

My eggplant parmigiana was not hot and frozen in the middle obviously not fresh. No reason to go back.

I've been to this restaurant twice. Both times everyone in the group felt that the food was mediocre and overpriced.

Yummy yummy pasta night!…read more My bf surprised me by bringing me to this nice and cozy Italian restaurant in Arlington heights on Saturday night. It wasn't too busy so we were lucky to get a table. They only have a few tables so making a reservation would be a good idea. Soon after we were seated people started showing up and the tables were starting to fill up. We were served complimentary bread and olive oil which was very good while we decided on our dish. They had a few specials that were not on the menu and sounded delicious but we decided to try their shrimp pasta and their chicken cacciatore. We also ordered the house Nina salad which had delicious pears and a light and tangy vinaigrette dressing. The waiter was very nice and I also think he was the cook since you could see into the kitchen and there were only two people behind the counter. Our pasta dishes came out nice and hot and we quickly devoured them. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the shrimp were nice and juicy and fully peeled. The shrimp pasta had a nice lemony and tangy flavor and there was plenty of sauce. The chicken cacciatore was also very good. The chicken was nice and tender and the pasta was super flavorful. They were even kind enough to bring us more bread so we could finish our sauces! We will definitely be back!

I honestly can't think of another restaurant that captures the essence of Northern Italian cuisine at this level. Every single dish we ordered was exceptional. My advice: go family-style so you can share and experience as much of the menu as possible. The tortellini was outstanding, the pasta with the brandy cream sauce was unforgettable, and the short rib was absolutely phenomenal. Not a single dish missed, and there wasn't one thing we wouldn't order again. To top it all off, the chef came over to our table at the end of the meal to say hello--a thoughtful touch that made an already incredible experience even more memorable. I would put this restaurant up against anything I've had in Italy, and without question, it's the best Italian restaurant in the Boston area. The most surprising part? It's in Woburn, not the North End. 10/10. An unforgettable dining experience

Short rib with risotto also not hot, and I suspect was microwaved after a service snafu. The bread spread started out HOT. Came out warm with red pepper flakes, parmigiana, and pure olive oil. I poured that cheese right in the oil with 2 spoons of peppers to dip that delicious, airy focaccia into. The salad was perfectly dressed with a bread crumb and bacon topping with your choice of anchovy on top. I'd highly recommend if you're hesitant, nice and vinegary and not too salty nor fishy. Came with a pepperoncini on the side as well. Bolognese sauce was rich, a tad creamy, with delicious meat you can actually taste and see! Some bigger chunks of meat made me feel special and not what I'm used to in a bolognese, but definitely not complaining. Make sure to have any bread left handy to scoop that last little sauce up with. Last but certainly not least, holy moly those Zeppole! Words can't describe how good these are. Crisp outside with a fluffy inside made my dreams come true. The dip was like a coconut whipped cream/ meringue. Whole thing was money bags, yo. Stazione Di Federal is located in downtown Waltham near the T stop. After a long day in Cambridge we were ready for sustenance but what we discovered at Stazione Di Federal was more than just a refueling stop. Housed in an old residence that has been exquisitely restored, Stazione Di Federal features beautiful interior work including crown molding throughout and stately plaster window casing that creates a warm, comfortable ambiance. It also has a magnificent hardwood floor that shines like a mirror. The high ceiling, brick walls, and nicely spaced tables gave it a Tuscan trattoria feel that complements the menu. We were greeted warmly by the owner, John Brackett, who showed us to our table in the main dining room. Our server, Patty, provided attentive and informative service throughout our two hour excursion. Stazione Di Federal is a scratch kitchen featuring fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and boasts an impressive curated wine list with superb selections from the many regions of Italy. We started with an extra dry Hendricks Gibson up (Finally! A Gibson!) and an Alto Adige Tramin Sauvignon Blanc. Italy's South Tyrol deserves more credit for its exceptional whites and the Tramin more than did justice to the grape. Our appetizer was beef carpaccio composed of paper-thin NY strip, shaved pecorino, arugla, capers, and EVOO. This was served with an exceptional focaccia which, together, was an outstanding way to start our meal. Their menu is broad and enticing; it was rather difficult to decide from so many great choices but we ordered the daily special - lemon risotto with scallops and, at Patty's recommendation, the orecchiette. The risotto was perfectly cheesy with citrus highlights decorated with five seared scallops that were charred on the outside and melt-in-your mouth tender inside. Of note were the peas that dotted to risotto! The orecchiette was al dente and featured a tremendous Italian sausage that had incredible anise notes. We finished with the baklava cheesecake that was topped with a pistachio walnut crumble, crispy phyllo, and a drizzle of warm honey. As always we each paired that with a double shot espresso with a twist. Stazione Di Federal is a tribute to east coast Italian done well. Impeccable service and a warm, inviting interior made this a memorable experience!

There's an old world feel when you walk in, and the decor is elegant without being stuffy. Although we sat at a table in the main dining room, the bar area was pretty sexy. No imbibing today, but she had the bar tender make me a fruity-ginger mocktail. Just ask, as the non-alcoholic selection amounts to two beers. Food is amazing. The clams casino and fritto misto apps were outstanding! The swordfish special ($49) was amazeballs. I don't even really like swordfish, but they managed to make it buttery soft and very lobsteresque in flavor. The baklava cheesecake is not to be missed--not overly sweet, and I'm on a mission to replicate it at home.
