The furniture is fine. I can't complain. The facility is a bit frustrating, but that's Ikea's thing and so you have to go in with that in mind, so I can't complain about that either. However, we had them deliver the furniture, and that's where the problems started.
So, they came to deliver the furniture on the first day. Most of it was fine, and the assembly people were great. However, they sent one of our items without hardware (we'll call this item A), another item was damaged (item B), and a third item (item C) came in two boxes, one of which was damaged. A bit frustrating, but accidents happen. So we kept items A and B in their boxes and the assembly guys assembled the not damaged part of item C. The assembly guys were great and went above and beyond what was required of them. They were not part of the problem. So we called and set up a time to get those problems fixed.
Fast forward two days when they came to do that. The delivery guy called me at 9 AM on a holiday to tell me he was 5 minutes away. Now, I'm not some sort of freak. At 9 AM on a holiday, I'm in bed. So I had to rush to get up and get presentable and all that. I'm sorry, but my place is in central Austin. Round Rock is 45 minutes away. I understand the necessity of getting places early, even on holidays, but at least you could call more than 5 minutes before you show up. So they came to get the damaged boxes and deliver undamaged ones, and I figured they knew what they were doing, so I didn't really pay much attention. they had me sign some things, and I saw that there was still a damaged box here that they hadn't taken. I assumed that they were coming back to get it. Then I saw their truck leave. In addition to that, they took away the set up part of item C and delivered a brand new one. Which is fine, but it seems kind of wasteful. On top of all that, instead of just giving me the hardware for item A, they decided it would be better if they just took it away and didn't replace it. Now, I'm a pretty accommodating guy, but from my point of view, that's not really acceptable. Luckily, I had the delivery guy's phone number from when he called earlier, so I figured I should just call him and he could come back and fix it no problem. People make mistakes, and I was willing to let him fix his mistake and let it pass.
"Hey, you were just at my place, and I am now missing an item and I still have an extra box that you didn't take."
"Nah man, we delivered everything we needed to."
"Well, you took away an item that you didn't replace, and there is is still a box that you didn't take."
"Well, I'll take a look in the back of my truck and call you back."
I'm sorry, I have eyes. I am looking at what eas delivered and it's not correct. But fine. I wait for his call. I called him at 9:30. I decided to give him until 10:00. When he hadn't called me back at 10:00, I decided to call the Round Rock Ikea instead. I'd given the delivery guy his chance. So I go to the Round Rock Ikea's website. No phone number. I Google it. No phone number. I'm sorry, but what self-respecting business doesn't put their phone number online? The local McDonald's franchise has their phone number online. It's really not that hard. Whatever. I figure I can call the national number and they can connect me. So I called the national number and got directed to a phone tree. No surprise there, but generally those phone trees have an option for everything you might need it for, or at least an option for "other inquiries." Not so with Ikea. That would make things too easy. So after a couple cycles of that, I decided that my best option was to take the "online and phone orders" line even though I'd ordered in the store. So I sat on hold for 15 minutes and listened to a recording of some guy lauding Ikea's home delivery service over peppy jazz. Eventually I connect with the guy, and I give him my order number, which he types in and tells me that he's the wrong department, but he'll connect me to the in-store purchase department. Fine. So I sit on hold for another 15 minutes. By this time, I'm yelling a lot of not very nice things to the peppy jazz home delivery advertising guy. Eventually I connect to a very friendly woman who couldn't believe that the delivery people did that and apologized profusely. So she went to deal with it and put me on hold again, this time with a slow and contemplative infinite clarinet loop (which is good because I think I would have found a way to throat punch the peppy jazz home delivery advertising guy) that is still stuck in my head. After about 10 minutes, she picked back up and told me that they could come tomorrow to fix it. So I'm crossing my fingers. What could possibly go wrong?
My apartment is 550 square feet. We didn't get a lot of stuff, but they have to drive a not so fuel efficient truck here from Round Rock three times. And they're going through a lot of product. That seems pretty wasteful, doesn't it? read more
