Oh IKEA...
My Oma told me about this place when it first opened and insisted I take her so she could get some home supplies and grab some food - she loves everything Swedish. The first time we went there, I spent 4 hours in IKEA with my little, elderly Oma pulling me around. I remember us dining - we each had a plate of Swedish meatballs, lingonberry jam, apple pie, and salmon. I remember loving it and I remember that it even pleased my very picky Oma whom cooked everything from scratch and hated things that tasted "cheap". According to her, everything tasted like it was supposed to. The store was filled with colorful, awesome furniture, and my Oma was able to find everything she needed and everything she felt I needed. My Oma and I would go back a number of times previous to her death years back and enjoyed it each time.
Fast forward to this weekend. After years of being together, I finally convinced my husband to take me to IKEA. He hates the place. I needed a few things and he wanted to just get it over with and fulfill the promise that he made me that he would go. I haven't been in a couple years and knew what I was looking for. The isles aren't exactly small, it's just that there are a lot of people that go and walk as slowly as possible while others are trying to navigate it. If you want to get through there fast, if you have the things you need in mind and know what departments you need to go to, prepare to be annoyed as your route will probably be blocked by people - some just standing there, bewildered. Everything I was looking for was gone - I had bought an awesome, hard wood step stool there that recently went missing, they only had short, cheaply made step stools this time around. I had seen some really cool retro looking scales at IKEA and on their website - gone, only ugly scales for $20 that looked identical to the ones sold at Walgreens for $10. I am in love with their colorful votive candles, I bought so many before, that my collection has literally lasted years - discontinued. OK so they switched out their inventory and I wasn't a fan of the new stuff...it happens.
I convinced my husband to eat at the restaurant, telling him how great it was and how my Oma thought it was stellar. He decided to give it a chance and we had everything my Oma and I had ordered - the salmon, apple pie, Swedish Meatballs, lingonberry jam, and we even threw it some mac n' cheese since we had not eaten that day. My husband was extremely skeptical, but decided to give it a try. We both tried the Salmon, it tasted like chemicals...like salmon dipped in Fabuloso and Pine-sol simultaneously - typically, we feel it is a crime to waste salmon, but we took a couple bites of ours and the rest went to waste. The Swedish Meatballs to me were OK, but nothing like I remembered and my husband thought they tasted like cardboard. The mac n' cheese was dry and it tasted like they used off-brand, flavorless cheese substitute. The mashed potatoes that came with the meatballs were OK, nothing fabulous. The lingonberry jam tasted like it was supposed to, but how can you go wrong with jam? I got down to my apple pie - it tasted delicious. I scarfed it down since I couldn't finish the rest of my meal since it was all basically inedible. My husband refused to try the pie. He folded his napkin, declared "Well, I did it, and I was right...this place is terrible and I just wasted $30 proving it."
IKEA, what happened? You used to be good, now, you are the McDonald's of Swedish cuisine. Now I am questioning if you were ever good to begin with - those times I went with my Oma, I was dirt poor and didn't know how to cook, so everything tasted amazing and Oma was an alcoholic who got confused easily. Now that I have had amazing cuisine and know how to cook pretty damn well, is your food suddenly sub par? I like to think that you were once delicious and just got greedy and cheapened the quality of all of your food, meanwhile, my husband believes that Oma was a delusional drunk and I was just half-starved.
Furthermore, from this experience, I can safely say my husband will never be back and it will probably be years before I return. With their inventory getting cheapened down, I feel like IKEA has lost the awesomeness it had before, which had been the only reason to spend hours in that maze. read more
