Shopping in Portland, Oregon... While driving from Seattle, Washington to Portland, I noticed IKEA close to the border between the States. Knowing that Oregon doesn't have sales tax. I suggested to my niece that she get her bigger desk here. She agreed! After browsing through the sales items, cute plushies, kitchen gadgets, and interesting displays, we used the clean restroom and loaded the shopping cart. My niece looked up the gaming desk's number and found the aisle where the box was located. We rolled the flat to the check out line and while we waited, I started scanning the UPC codes on the IKEA app. We skipped the line and went to pay! We even got a free large blue bag for self-scanning our purchases! Yippee! The trick was to get the $79.99 desk into our rental car. Erin, the helpful employee at the checkout station, reassured us that we could return the desk if we couldn't fit it into the car... even after we took it out of the box. We had to try. The price of the desk was great! It wasn't available online. If we had it delivered, we'd be charged Washington sales tax whick would defeat the purpose. There was no other option. We took the desk out of the box in the light rain, removed the packing materials, placed the desk legs in the trunk of the car, and maneuvered the desk top so that one corner touched the glass of the rear window and the sides rested against the back of my driver's seat (which was pushed all the way forward) and my niece's seat was pushed down as flat as it could go. She was still able to take a nap on the desktop for the 2.5 hour drive! LOL! It sure was a memorable adventure which was super productive and promoted teamwork, positive attitude, communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills! read more

Oh, how sad...my Ikea is not what it used to be. I haven't been here since 2020 and it definitely had a downbeat vibe. Before I arrive, I check availability online. At the store, one third of my items were out-of-stock or listed as "not at this store." Disappointing. When I asked a staff member why items are missing, he said, "lots of things walk out the door," meaning "stolen." Hmmmm....could the problem be the ridiculous self-check out system, that foists the labor onto customers, and causes shrinkage? It didn't work for Walmart....apparently, not working here either. Many of my favorite items were discontinued. The wonderful Lingonberry Sylt sauce is now some sort of jam spread. The food court is no more (remember the soft-serve cones and warm cinnamon rolls?) Many shelves had empty spots. The pretty Scandinavian designs and colors are no more, replaced by dark, dour colors and bizarre prints and patterns. Prices are much higher for the same "quality." I tried shopping online. If you purchase $50. of lightweight or small items, shipping is free....except it isn't. Tried to place an order...no free shipping...called customer service who insisted that my items weighed 50lbs when in reality, they were under 10lbs. Weird. Canceled my order. I miss the innovation and warmth of Ikea. I can easily find similar items on Amazon, but it used to be fun to browse and shop here. Seems like Ikea has lost its soul. No plans to come back...ever. (the two stars are for the gentleman who assisted me in finding items on the main floor. They need an aisle/bay numbering system like Home Depot where you can go right to an item. Definitely a convenient location that allows those who live in Washington to visit since it's right off the freeway in Portland. I personally visited because traffic was insane and I wanted to wait it out (live in Washington, but was in Portland). I love that they still have the arrows so it guides you through the whole store. I knew I wasn't buying furniture but still enjoyed seeing what's new. I personally love their pant/skirt hangers so that was my mission today, since I was here. I ended up with random things (2 hangers, bag clips, strainer, lint roller, and vibrant colored cutting boards). The only thing that caught me off guard was that I saw employees everywhere but not one greeted me or asked if I needed help. Regardless, it's a fun store and prices are still so reasonable! read more

I'm not sure if anyone enjoys visiting IKEA (I certainly don't), but it's a necessity. It's surprisingly well-designed at their price points. When I was looking for a new bed frame, I got one online from a non IKEA store, and it was horribly squeaky and the tolerances were not good. I wished that I would have spent the same amount of money at IKEA. Once you've visited a single IKEA, you've visited them all. The parking lot is huge and well marked. The entrance has an escalator leading up to the showroom, with Småland and the bathrooms right before you transcend to the realm of home furnishings. I actually like the concept of Småland, which is a supervised play facility where parents can drop their child off for free. That way you can concentrate on how to spend your money without any distractions. There's also a small cafe in the showroom, so you can grab a bite to eat to replenish your energy levels. I do have a few gripes though. Not all products are displayed on the showroom so you'll have to look up items before you go. Even though the website shows what is in stock at your stone, the actual location in store is not helpful (vague terms like "lighting" etc) and it's hard to find a staff member to help you look. It was awful trying to find a specific light bulb and I gave up. Also, the self checkout will occasionally flag you for manual review which can hold up the process. read more

I went in looking for a specific item. I knew the aisle and bin number. The aisle I wanted was carefully hidden out of numerical order. I still found what I needed. No help from employees, who stood around and watched me hunt. Gee thanks. THEN all of the checkouts were closed. Only option was self checkout where 5 (I counted) employees were standing around chatting. If you can pay to employ five people to visit, they can run a checkout lane. I do not work for IKEA. I don't work for free while your employees stand around chatting. I will not be back. read more

The store is not what it used to be. I liked to have a meal and look out the window and relax while shopping. I could not find a clean table, including hairs on the tables, this time! Also, It's all self checkout now. The computer/register flagged me to check my items which was kind of humiliating because it's a bright yellow screen everyone can see. I bought lids from as is, which the system should know that people could do, without immediately assuming that they're going to steal something. I find the exclusively self check out set up very cold and a lot of work for someone with a disability. IKEA cares more about pleasing it's shareholders that it's customers. There was not one live person working in the market and it's unclear where you pay for groceries. IKEA just feels like the lights are on but nobody's home! Again as I said eating in the cafeteria was not relaxing but kind of a gross experience for me and the food lukewarm with desserts limited.. The new way that they've redone the restrooms is kind of gross too, just sort of an un hygienic free-for-all. It feels very politically correct but I doubt the people who designed these bathrooms would want to use them or eat in the cafeteria! Of course IKEA has the market cornered on practical organizational systems and simple Scandinavian design which it seems like they know and are pushing their luck with. Many of the best textiles are not available at the Portland store. Also, the store is clearly overrun by customers l and difficult to walk in the aisles because there are so many people rushing through. It would be nice if there were another IKEA in Oregon so that it was not so impacted. Scandinavian myself, I used to love to go to IKEA store and soak up the atmosphere and check out the food market and new home items but now I just feels very commoditized and cold. What is shame this store had such a cool unique to America vibe and it's been completely ruined by automation. Too bad that they can't I hire more people. A customer like myself has to have the experience of the computer randomly choosing them to have someone come over because there isn't a live cashier ringing up the items. A real human that can see that they're clearly from as is and there's nothing wrong. Is this our future where computers make arbitrary audits about a stealing instead of being rung up by a human being and treated with dignity? By the way I bought these jar lids twice on different days and both times it flagged to scan nine of my items to make sure that the order was correct. Lots parking and a designated entrance and exit. Clean and private bathrooms that have been recently modeled to be for everyone with a shared hand wash station in the center. The meatball plate from the cafe was very hot and fresh and delicious. The chicken strips are not the best. The chocolate cake they have is fantastic. Great place to beat the heat, cold or rain! I collect ideas by going through the different departments and seeing what they've put together. They've got tremendous selection of organizing and decorating items, but so much more. And it's great that you can see and touch their products to get a good feeling of what you're buying. The prices are astounding. I mean, some things I just can't believe that they're as low priced as they're selling things for. Lastly, but very importantly, I want to comment on their Swedish restaurant. They have salads cakes, their trademark meatballs, and kids meals to name just a few things. I specifically appreciate the fact that they will sell kids meals to adults, because a kids meal is the extent of my appetite, so nothing goes to waste. Their dining room is spacious and kept clean. The cashier at the restaurant was very friendly and helpful. When we left, we did self check out to pay for our purchases, and it went very quickly. This is the rudest Ikea I've ever been to. The employees are willing to yell at people for literally nothing. The food court is the worst at this with rolling their eyes and yelling at people when trying to find the line to stand in. I have never had a good experience here and honestly will never be back. I am a very pleasant person. I rarely complain but they eye rolling when asking for help and the yelling is too much. I have never had an employee raise their voice at me like I experienced today. My husband and I decided to go to IKEA because I saw a few things online that I wanted to see in person first. Even though it's been about 10 years since my last visit to IKEA, the experience remains the same regardless of the location. There are two floors where you see everything because of the one way layout. Start at the top with the showrooms that feature furniture and larger items. Then, work your way down to the lower level that has the self-serve furniture area and the checkout area. If you start on the bottom like we did, you have to leave your cart of unpaid items in the cart parking section before going upstairs. My husband and I didn't leave with a cartful of things like other people. We got a door mat and folding gym mat for my son's playroom. Some items were out of stock so we ordered those online along with some larger items. Self checkout was easy and quick. The service was 4 stars. When we had questions, they were all very nice. The overall selection and color palette of the furniture appeared similar to what I remembered with some updates to the design. The prices are still reasonable. Even though it's no longer one of my favorite stores, it's still fun to walk around to get some inspiration to see things in person instead of relying on a computer screen before making a purchase. read more

Will never shop there again and I use to love this store. I knew what I wanted and went to the store to purchase it, but they only had self check out. I do not do self check out. It puts CP lotta work. So I went home and ordered in line and was willing to pay the extra shipping cost. What I ordered came timely, at least part of it. I ordered two lamps with some special lightbulb they needed. I got the two lamps, but no lightbulbs charged for them. Been going around and around online trying to deal with it. What is not to like at ikea!? Cheap but good quality stylish furniture - and you always walk out with way more as you wanted to buy :) addictive. I love it That said outside of the bistro where they sell the famous hot dogs (now in meat, veggie (my favorite) and plant based) today the food truck was open - and they had special wraps - like their meatballs with mashed potatoes I na bread wrap. Came here on a Saturday afternoon just for food. I got the 12 meatball meal, side salad, garlic toast, and some salmon. There was a super long line that was moving rather slow but we got food and good food at that. All the workers were kind despite the rush of people. We got 2 ice waters and the water tased good. Yummy food as always. The bathroom was a different story due to the super narrow stalls. All the food came out to around 38$ so it was an alright price for the amount and quality of food. read more

Sigh, I've seen so many Ikea's around the world and the one we have here let's just say is simple. Let's talk about the food/cafeteria. The meatballs were lukewarm and on the colder side. It was sadly not heated up so it was not good. The only thing was good was the chicken tenders and fries. To my surprise, it's the best around the area haha with a decent price. We got the strawberry shortcake which was nice and spongey but very very sweet. It's nice they give you a $10 coupon for products which motivated us to go haha. The soft serve strawberry ice cream was not...soft lol. The price was reasonable but it seemed like it was churned too long or not enough liquid to make it soft. The meatballs went up significantly which made me not want to buy but perhaps eating it HOT from time to time if possible in the cafeteria area. Yikes! /every trip to Ikea is fearful. The maze! Follow the arrows and look for the secret shortcut. LOL...Now thats funny! I've been to IKEA several times, it's the place for small items for shelving and little holders in my drawers. Most of the other items do not fit my lifestyle. IKEA is famous for the puzzle, the puzzle of the store, the puzzle of the furniture assembly. I've found most of the furniture is temporary if used regularly. There's a need for affordable furniture and small pieces. The staff is usually busy, however if you're able to catch an employee on the floor, they're usually helpful. Sign up for the rewards program, discounts are always good. Grab some ice cream on the way out and be happy! read more

We've always enjoyed going to IKEA as an "outing": shop, have lunch, maybe shop some more. No more. The cafeteria was shockingly bad. We went on a Monday afternoon. The menus were wrong, the person serving the food did not offer the different options for meatballs (which weren't on the menu), they served the meal on a paper plate, mashed potatoes were dry, like they'd been sitting around for a day, barely warm. My husband's had a a thick, dry "skin" over half of them. The lingdonberry sauce had almost no berries in it. To top it off, the utensils consisted of a spork-like fork, almost too small to use, and paper cups for the tepid fountain drinks, half of which were out! It was also strange that half the employees were wearing Covid masks and latex gloves...in 2025. The overall selection of products wasn't like it used to be either. So sad! What the hell happened to IKEA? The bathrooms are all individual now and fewer in number so there's a line. That might not have been a problem, except we ate the meatballs and immediately got sick. So waiting in line not so nice. And looking for things for the kitchen, they've torn everything up, and they only had two kitchens to look at. So we went to buy food and leave, but you want to buy food. You have to go two different places if you want to buy meatballs in one place and then the juices and lingonberries. Great experience overall! They do make you walk through the entire store so expect it to be a one hour commitment even if you're just there for one thing but it's a cool store with a lot of stuff to check out so be sure and at least buy something! The process is pretty straight forward--see what ya like--jot down the item and head on over to the self serve warehouse and track down your pieces--load em up on the cart and check out about 50 yards down the line! You can either opt for self delivery or Ikea will deliver for about $70/$80. There is usually a wait as there is one staff who does it all so expect a 30 minute wait for delivery arrangements! overall a decent experience and good furniture for a good value ! Parking was not a problem here as there was plenty of it read more

I love IKEA... for the furniture, for the home accessories, for the salty licorice, for the meatballs, for the curtains and pillows, for the crazy variety of everything - all under one roof. But this review is for the deli that's right after you exit the cashier after paying. After cruising through the aisles, picking up a few items for my home, I realized I was hungry. All that shopping, walking, sitting on sofas, running my hands over rugs, looking for glass bottles for my homemade tinctures, had made me hungrier than I thought I was so I made a stop at the deli on the way out. One veggie dog, a pretzel with mustard, and a fountain drink later, I was sitting in the parking lot in my car, letting my stomach know my throat had not been cut. I went early to return items. I was third in line as they just opened the doors. The two people working said, "We'll take the first two people in line." I was third. Standing there waiting I saw the machine to enter your name but the screen said "transactions closed" so I thought the machine wasn't ready and just continued to wait in line. Several people were in line behind me. Another lady came and went up to the machine and was able to get past the screen. Her name was called and she went to the counter knowing full well we were all in front of her. So when the counter opened I walked over and Tina gave me a nasty look like what are doing here at the counter. I explained that the other lady cut the line and she turned and said, "they called my name." I tried to explain that the screen said transaction was closed so none of us in line logged in. She was really short with me and seemed really irritated with me. It was really frustrating that she didn't seem to care that the screen message said closed. Not only are they out of most of the good stuff If you order stuff out of stock you get the rudest people delivering to you. After the delivery people started to bring everything out. I told the guy he couldn't block my doorway for fire safety. He said he would move it after he takes a picture. Then he left. I asked him to move it like he said he would. People either love or hate IKEA. I fall into the former category. So it goes without saying that I loved this particular IKEA, as it's pretty much the same as all the others (with some minor differences). In fact, I think that's one of the best things about this store: the predictability and consistency. I came here on Black Friday with my kid. I braced myself for horrific crowds but, surprisingly, it wasn't as congested and crowded as I had anticipated. But it was busy. Busy but manageable. This store has some items and some features not seen in other IKEA stores I've been to. Midway through the store, they have some free-standing "gallery" rooms, all decorated, as if they were islands. Interesting and cool. And there were some items for sale that I've not seen elsewhere (i.e., a rain hat/bucket hat made from the iconic blue plastic IKEA bags, and smaller purses also made from said bags, and more). That said, I should note that this store was low in stock or completely out of some items that are available at other IKEA stores (i.e, their patterned napkins). Perhaps it's due to supply issues here, I don't know. They have a lot of fabulous Christmas decor items, all super reasonably priced, and smaller home accessories like candles and real plants and planters, photo frames and wall art and more. So IMO IKEA is way more than just a furniture store. And their café and Swedish meatballs are famous for good reason! SO good. Don't miss the food market and cafe at the exit where you can get cookies or hotdogs or soft-serve ice cream for practically nothing. Seriously, can't beat the prices here. read more
