I haven't gone to Icicles for years now. I remember everyone loved going to rolled ice cream places when it was trendy, but I still appreciate a good rolled ice cream place when I come across one. I came here after eating dinner because I wanted something sweet. It was either boba or this, and I chose this. I wanted something cold yet not too sweet. Upon looking at the menu, there are a few things you should know. There are regular cream flavors and non-dairy options. There's also separate stands/kiosks for if you want to pay with cash or pay with card. I ended up paying with card that night. With the iPad kiosk, it allows you to choose a base first, and then add up to 5 toppings for free. You can add mix-in's in your ice cream, but it's $0.50 more. I ended up getting strawberry fantasy with whipped cream, toasted marshmallows, Graham crackers, condensed milk, strawberries, and cheesecake pieces. My total came out to be around $13. I almost forgot how creamy this was and how slow it melts. I loved all the toppings I got with my strawberry fantasy base (honestly most of the toppings I got are in the base itself). Icicles has been my all time favorite this summer for ice cream. These rolls of liquid gold is worth the expensive wait lol. I usually get the Mai Thai and my husband gets the Nutella and chill. The Mai Thai has a strong Thai Tea flavor which I love, you cannot ever go wrong when you order it because it's one flavor. After a handful of visits we finally started to ask to balance the flavors or ask for more of a Nutella flavor, the staff was very kind and of course new faces most of the time (student employees/young).The consistency of these rolls feel luxuriously thick, almost like cold clay in your mouth that melts. There could be a long wait if it's busy because they're literally mixing and rolling these ice cream rolls with their hands and requires a lot of strength. Inside it has a cute wall set up for pictures but no seating, you have to stand and wait for your order so keep in mind the parking meter when you visit. They may be on the pricy side but very worth it considering you can see the ingredients/ process of making your rolls. The toppings are a plus if you want more flavor and texture. I think $40 for ice cream is a bit excessive. The service was nice you were able to watch them make your ice cream rolls in front of you I didn't like that everything was self service for putting in the order it seems like everyone is moving to that taking the personal experience out of service. I wish there was a place we could've sat and enjoyed our ice cream but it's mainly a pick up and go place so you can here some faint music in the background but mostly you hear the banging of the ice cream being made. We came by after dinner for a dessert and Icicles is always a fun one to get. I've seen these in Southeast Asia years ago. So it was great to see this locally. Lines during the summers are long, but the wait goes by quick. You can order on the screen or if a worker is free, they can take the order at the register. There's also door dash orders too, so that's why there is an added wait time. There's no where to sit since it is a small shop. It wasn't crowded when we first got there, but when we left there was a line out the door. We got our orders in less than 20 minutes or so. We've tried a few flavors but I keep going back to the Thai tea and add mochi. Yummmm. On this night, we tried strawberry and it didn't disappoint. As far as prices goes, it is pricey, but the ice cream is labor intensive. You literally get to see the ice cream made in front of you. It's fun watching the ice cream be made. When Icicles first opened, they were $8 with unlimited toppings, which is already steep but still justifiable given the novelty (at the time) of rolled ice cream plus the amount of labor that goes into making each one. We stopped in a few nights ago, and Icicles has now increased their prices to $12.50 each AND toppings are no longer unlimited - the ordering kiosk limits you at 5 toppings. Mix-ins cost additional, so you could easily order a $20 cup here. Although last night was the first time at the San Mateo location, I am not a complete Icicles newbie as I've been to the Newark location ~2018 (I lived in Fremont at the time). Despite it being a Saturday night, it wasn't that crowded. Loved being able to order from the kiosk. I got the Oreo blast with Oreo crumbs and the torched marshmallow. My friend got one with brownie bites, though I don't remember the exact one. Mine was great! It's definitely a treat as $12.95/cup is pricey. Kind of hard to justify the price on the regular when I can get mochi at Trader Joe's for less than half the price. Icicles hasn't made its way to Walnut Creek, which isn't a bad thing as I'd probably be tempted to go all the time, lol. Watching the staff make the ice cream is fun. This was my first time trying rolled ice cream. I love the huge range of options they offer on their menu, including their non dairy specials. We tried the Rock n Roll, and Fruit Roll Up, both were really good. The Fruit Roll Up was definitely sweet, the flavors of mango, raspberry, and strawberry lemonade were tangy and strong, and I'd say maybe even addicting if you have a sweet tooth. The Rock n Roll had a really unique flavor, because the way they make the servings is you start with the basic vanilla custard, then based on the Icicles preference you chose on the menu, they chop and crush those items and mix it into the ice cream before they roll it, and that's how you get the ice cream flavor. Then you choose unlimited toppings to be sprinkled on top of your icicles (and there are a lot of toppings to choose from!). It's a little confusing because the ingredients they mix into the ice cream (crushed) are part of the same ingredients you can choose from to sprinkle on top (the unlimited toppings are only for those being sprinkled on top, not the toppings being mixed into the ice cream). Anyway, they don't have indoor seating, or any seating at all. But guests would sit on the ledge near the entrance to enjoy their treats. That's what we did. Besides that confusion with the toppings, ordering was pretty easy on the self-order kiosk at the front counter. And the wait wasn't too bad on a Sunday night. read more

I first saw this Over 10 years ago in K-Town LA, and there is a place like this on Grant Avenue in SF Chinatown I've been to as well.
