We held a large party in their back room. They could not have been more generous. They let us have balloons delivered, use their coolers to chill the cake and champagne ($5 corkage) as well show up an hour early to set everything up. They let us move their tables around, helped us decorate. We brought in all the decorations and they were kind and helpful even though it presented more cleanup on their end. Cannot express how gracious they were on every level. Servers were attentive and charming, even when our party kept standing in their paths. As the organizer, management and staff checked in with me regularly to ask if we needed anything. I was initially disappointed another well known brewery wouldn't agree to host but I am now so glad Izakaya (the birthday girls go-to sushi spot) is where we ended up. We ordered dinner to go and they told us 45 minutes. when we came back in 45 minutes they told us just a few more minutes. In another 45 minutes it was ready. The few items that were supposed to be warm were cold and clearly had been sitting for the hour and a half when the order said it would be ready. we have been in this pandemic for a year now and should be able to get a take out order. sorry... never taking our business there again. read more

Normally go to Big Tuna and frequently has slow to average service there. Tonight we choose to head across town because it had more outdoor seating. Waited about 15-20 minutes for 2 top despite it being empty for 10 minutes prior to us sitting. Once we ordered our rolls took 50 minutes to arrive. Rice seemed old. We've been coming here for the last couple of years and while the food is always amazing, the service is usually okay but tonight we just had the most amazing service from Ryan. On top of being attentive and fast, he was super upbeat and seemed like he genuinely enjoyed what he was doing. He answered our questions and had a detailed knowledge of both sake and rolls. Despite being there at a later time (got there at 8:50 when they close at 10) he had a positive attitude the entire time we were there. The entire staff actually seemed really happy. The food was good, the drinks were good. The sushi was fantastic. My only problem was they are very liberal with the mask policy. The Host was wearing the mask only over his mouth with his nose hanging out, which defeats the purpose of the mask. Then when people showed up with out a mask they were just allowed in. And while they were waiting, those people kept passing my table to go see if the dining room was ready for them yet. Nobody asked them to stop. And when people would get up for the bathroom or anything without a mask, nobody said anything to them. Waitresses who don't know the menu and treat you like your idiotic because you asked for something they're not familiar with. 1 stars for the decent food and prices. We won't be back however. We spend easily over $200 per month here regularly and that's a modest estimate. You've lost me and everyone I would ever bring here with your endless lines of horrible waiters and waitresses. When you hire people who treat your customers poorly, act like they don't want to be there, hands a customer a check and ask "do you need a pen?", takes over 10 minutes to return a customers credit card despite the restaurant being completely dead, you loose that customer for life. Finally an izakaya in Chico! Food here is good. Service here is great. Location sucks (but worth the search). They do have a sushi bar, but I came for the japanese style tapas that you find at a standard izakaya. Two of us ordered a bunch of small plates to share. Plates range from $1.50-$8.00 Steamed Rice= Great Miso= Meh Cucumber Sunomono- Great Japanese Pickles= Great Chicken Yakitori (Grilled Chicken)= Good Takoyaki (Octopus Balls)= Good Shumai (Shrimp Dumpling)= Meh Hama Kama (Tuna Collar)= Great Although it sounds like a lot the two of us polished all of it off. I ate at Izakaya Ichiban for an early dinner on 2/24. I woke up at 3AM, covered in sweat and my stomach roiling. I barely made it to the bathroom but I would spend most of the remainder of my weekend there. I ended up having to call in to work, and.when I went to the doctor on Monday morning they diagnosed food poisoning and sent me for labs to confirm and to rule out food borne parasites. All told, I was violently sick two and a half days lost vacation time (which is money), had to pay a co-pay for an office visit and pay for labs. I'm very unhappy with this establishment and will not be returning. I'm not sure what they did or why, but the trust is completely broken. I'm choosing to share this because I see it as a public health concern. If it happened to one person it could happen again. read more

This is my second visit to this wonderful sushi bar and restaurant. Came in on a Saturday afternoon with my girlfriend for lunch and it wasn't very busy. The service was prompt, food was delicious, and restaurant experience was very pleasant (peaceful, welcoming, and well-decorated says the girlfriend). The waitress was very polite and helpful. I spoke with her on a previous visit and learned that the owners of the restaurant are the same for Big Tuna Bistro! I ordered a 5 piece sashimi (salmon and albacore tuna), spicy tuna roll (forgot the name, had serrano peppers in it), and medium hot sake. My girlfriend had the bento box special which included grilled salmon, chicken skewer, small 6 piece roll, tempura veggies, rice, and side salad with soda. The fish was mouth watering, super fresh, and everything on the bento box cooked just right. Our total came out with a tip under $40! Normally, I would have paid more for the same. Well, this place is still relatively new, so I'll have to update this review again when I come back to try out dinner. But one thing is for sure, we both agreed it is definitely a place to visit more than once. read more

The sushi rice isn't my favorite - too warm maybe? I'm not sure. But it was perfectly edible and didn't keep me from cleaning my plate. I hardly write reviews but I definitely need to write this one. If I could give a zero review I would. We visited them in their former location many times and we were always pleased with their good prices and good-sized portions. When we just recently visited them in their new location it was clear it was a busy night, so we were as patient as we could be with the LONG waits for our food. We were sitting at the sushi bar with 3 other people. Two of them came in after us and sat down to be served. These people got their order before we did. There were 4 sushi chefs and they were busy, but we thought that they would serve customers based on the orders they had received. We ordered nigiri sushi but it took more than 30 minutes to receive it. When we received our food, the pieces of fish were skimpy on a lot of rice. We were charged almost $100 for 9 pieces of nigiri sushi with a beer and sake. Apparently, at their previous location, an employee left something on in the kitchen, and the whole place caught on fire putting them out of business for about 4 months. Now they have to make up for lost business so it is passed onto the customer. Our beef is since they been open in their new location the quality and service have gone down and the prices have gone up. It's really too bad because it used to be a great place to go for sushi at a reasonable price. It seems that they are operating like they have no competition which is foolish since there are more than a half dozen other sushi restaurants in Chico that will now receive our business. read more

The food is great and consistent, considering this is the sister restaurant to Big Tuna I already knew what I like. I've been three times now, it's less crowded than Big Tuna which makes for a better meal in my opinion.... I think the location isn't quite as 'hip' for some but that's all the better for the locals. I always get the Japanese tacos, a Mexican roll with the spicy mayo on the side (less calories) and a Dragon roll... Yum! To be honest, I only come here for the takoyaki/octopus balls. They make the best one I ever tasted and they got the recipe down right. No where else makes it this good and they aren't shy about adding good amount of bonito flakes. Without the flakes, the dish just isn't the same but this place does an awesome job on takoyaki. I'm embarrass to admit that I literally just come here for the takoyaki. Their sushi is decent but on the smaller side. My bf who watches a lot of Japan food video says they make their sushi just like you would get in Japan. So I'm thinking that their food is almost similar to what you'll get in Japan but idk. First time having sushi in Chico it's not bad, a little different from the normal sushi atmosphere of Reno or Bay Area. The service was excellent, nice friendly waiters, the takoyaki octopus was delicious I'd go in just for those again, but some of the other rolls weren't as fresh as the sushi rolls I've had in the past in the little city of sin. I wouldn't say their sushi is anything out of the ordinary or spectacular but it's good for a bite of sushi in Chico, also if you ever get to Reno it's all you can eat. read more

I ordered appetizers because the sushi selection was not very large; I'm from L.A. so we have a larger selection & what I normally order wasn't available. Ab-so-lute-ly: It's the tacos! Although I'd like a larger choice of fillings (shrimp, scallops, yellowail..) you can not beat eggplant tempura spicy tuna tacos! The coconut shrimp was just that, nothing special & only 2 shrimp cut in half for the price. The Japanese friend chicken was pretty goos, but I expected chicken parts w/ bone, not nuggets The Obento (no box, it is redundant) was plentiful & a good variety. Staff very nice & helpful. One addition I'd like to see: BSCR, Baked Scallop California Roll. It is a Must of a roll... as is a regular Rainbow roll. Overall we were very happy & full! read more
