This was our go to Friday night restaurant for a while. We really liked it. You got treated very good. Food was really good. We haven't been there in maybe two months and this time when we walked in it looked all refreshed like someone had come in and redid their tables and they had new menus and it looked really nice. However, what was lacking was the quality of the service and the food. I remember feeling like I was at someone's house because it was very comfortable and family feeling especially by the wait staff this time we walked in and instead of saying pick where you want to sit like they used to some girl sat us over on a side of the room. OK no problem then they handed us these new menus and there was no soup. Usually they give you free soup then some other lady came over with the soup and put it on the table then they took our order and the waitress seemed like we were bothering her. They brought out the food. The quality of the food went down big time. My husband always orders the chicken yakisoba so does my daughter, my daughter also ordered a sushi roll. I ordered hibachi steak and instead of rice I wanted noodles. My husband and daughter said that their food didn't taste like it used to and my hibachi steak (now mind you I had a hibachi steak at a different Japanese restaurant in Georgia so I'm thinking it's going to taste the same.) She even asked me how I wanted my steak cooked and I said, medium rare. I got little squares of very overcooked pieces of meat that looked like they went to the store and bought some stew beef (at the other Japanese restaurant that we went to it was actually filet mignon.) The steak was hard and rubbery at the other restaurant. It was beautifully cooked. Also, my noodles tasted like they were drenched in teriyaki sauce, which I can't stand. Ichiban used to be one of my go-to favorites in Bowling Green, but the service has fallen off a cliff over the last year and a half. Last night was easily the worst experience yet. We ordered a sushi roll as an appetizer -- simple enough. But it never came. Halfway through our meal, we realized our server had disappeared, and we finally had to flag down a different waitress. Only then did we learn the order had never even been placed. Even after that, it took more than 20 minutes and still no sushi roll. By the time it finally showed up, we were so fed up we just had it boxed to take home. And here's the kicker: it wasn't even a busy night. Well over half the tables were vacant. There was absolutely no excuse for such inattentive, careless service. A restaurant's reputation rests as much on service as on food. Ichiban may still be known as a Bowling Green favorite, but if they keep operating this way, that reputation won't last. Right now, they're failing their customers in a big way. read more

Restaurant was not busy, too over 5 minutes to get a refill on a drink because the 2 people was standing on their phones and talking. Food was bland. Place has went WAY down hill since they reopened. Extremely disappointed with customer service here. They seem to be low staffed but I went in there for 2 regular hibachi plates, and waited OVER AN HOUR!!! We're basically regulars here, and the food here is amazing especially for the price. All the girl servers are super sweet/there's even a younger man who is also very polite and attentive. There is one specific waiter, white guy, who is just flat out rude and disrespectful. We had a terrible experience with him rushing us to pay/sign for our check and it made it very unwelcoming and made us leave despite not finishing our food. He said to us "here's your check if you can go ahead and put your card" and then walked away for a second then immediately turns around and goes "we're in a hurry if you can just put the card on the check" so we do so. He brings back the check for us to tip and sign, walks away but then immediately turns around and says "can you just go ahead and sign so we can get the register shut down" mind you it's 40 minutes before closing, we're almost done eating, and he just would not leave us alone. He just genuinely makes the both of us uncomfortable and we came back for our anniversary, and sat down but was not seen for 15 minutes so we just left. I assume that white guy was the only waiter at the moment because he kept looking over and walking in our direction, then would turn around. It's just incredibly awkward and he did it to himself by the way he treated us the last time we went. It's such a shame because it's honestly one of my favorite spots in BG, but now I just don't even want to sit down because I do not want him as our waiter. read more

First of all this restaurant claims to be Japanese. I am half Japanese and this food and sushi was horrible, I have had Japanese food since my youth years and was raised by a mother who was full Japanese. Who puts potatoes in a dish? Sweet potatoes? Yuck. Spicy Tuna is not a can of tuna fish mixed with Sriracha hot sauce in a sushi roll. WTF? Totally disappointed. Good luck and this is my opinion based on being Japanese cuisine lover. I went to Bowling Green to visit my daughter at WKU. We were looking for a dinner place because we were starving. My daughter said she went to this restaurant before and loved it. The outside is not much to look at. But you can't judge a book by its cover. I ordered chicken and shrimp combination and my daughter ordered the spicy chicken. We also had California rolls as a appetizer. Everything was great. I actually liked the spicy chicken better than I liked my own food. The wait staff was adequate. I will definitely be back, but I think I will have takeout. read more

My favorite place to get sushi while I lived in Bowling Green. It was only a 10 minute drive from my work so it was easy to grab something and go. The food is fresh and they give you big portions for how much you pay. Honestly I wish Ichiban would just move to Louisville so I can keep coming here on a regular basis. read more

I was a little hesitant to order raw fish in Kentucky (I just moved here from WA)... but it was really good, super fast, and they were really nice folks. We ordered over the phone, then payed in the drive thru then we're told by the girl working that she would bring us our order curbside in 20 minutes when it had already been over 30 minutes since we ordered. After another 25 minutes go by I go inside to ask how much longer, and the girl said "I already gave you your order".. I said uhhh no you didn't we have been waiting for 55 minutes !!! She says "well I have it to the blonde girl sitting at the bar without asking the name" I said well you obviously mistook her for someone else. She says I'm LYING ! So I legit had to bring my gf inside and guess what the girl says!!!! "Oh well I gave it to another blonde white girl because you all look alike". Like WAY TO BE RACIST!!! She then said she DIDNT HAVE TIME TO LOOK UP OUR RECEIPT (probably didn't even know how). It took me 10 more minutes of arguing to get my refund, and she wouldn't give me the very NICE tip i had put on the carry out back at first .. but I said heck no I need all of it back!! Today my wife and I celebrated our anniversary by coming to this restaurant ichiban. I have to honestly say I was very unhappy in the cuisine. Instead of giving us a menu with the list of sushi they had it posted on a wall. I ordered the appetizer gioza that was fairly decent. Unfortunately that's where I feel along with my wife everything went downhill from there. I ordered the chicken tempura, The chicken tempora was actually chicken fingers, and it was dry. And then it was topped off with regular onion rings. The side dish was supposed to be white rice. It wasn't really the type of white rice I am used to eating. Being of Asian descent I found the tempora as well as the white rice extremely disappointing. My wife's chicken yakisoba was also a disappointment. I have to honestly say that this was an extremely lousy dining experience at a place that was supposed to be a Japanese restaurant, and to honest it really wasn't a Japanese restaurant. I know in the service industry it's extremely difficult to hire people, but the server were not attentive or courteous, and rude. I would recommend not going to this place. read more

I went on a Saturday afternoon around 12:30pm. There were probably 3-4 other customers in the restaurant at the time. We were seated promptly, and brought out their mushroom soup and our drinks rather quickly. The entrees themselves took a little longer than expected given the occupancy. I ordered the Shrimp and Salmon and my wife and kids shared the Ribeye and some sushi (Bowling Green Roll for the wife, Ikura for the daughter). The Sushi was decent. Nothing spectacular, but the rice was recently flavored and the proteins were fresh enough. My salmon and shrimp were cooked enough, though the flavor was masked by the heavy covering of sauce. My main gripe with this restaurant was their "fried rice." Everyone's rice at the table, and we ordered and extra order because my kids love fried rice, taste led like it had been washed in soap. I have never seen my children spit out fried rice and refuse to eat steak because it had touched said rice. Even worse, when we complained to the waiter he stood their jaw agape and acted like we were crazy. If a "Japanese Steakhouse" can't get fried rice made correctly, I cannot recommend that anyone visit it. Two stars only because the sushi was on par with what was expected. This restaurant needs to work on their customer service and especially on their rice. read more

The Shumai was obviously a frozen prepackaged product like the ones you could buy at your local International Market. I've learned that Good Dim Sum is pretty much non-existent in The SoKY and Nashville area. The Seafood Yakasobi wasn't bad. It had a decent flavor but the Shrimp was tough and over cooked. The FireRoll was very Impressive! It Actually is served on Fire! The presentation was really cool and was Delicious! Absolutely worth trying! Service was good and Staff was friendly. I think this is my first bad review. I've always seen this place being hyped up in Facebook for being just as good as Shogun for less money. So me and the husband were excited to try it out after our movie today. I couldn't even finish my meal. First there was a horrible mildew type smell in the restaurant. Got past that and ordered the chicken hibachi meal. I will say the soup you get was good. Nothing special but good. Now the meal was a disaster. The "fried rice" had absolutely no flavor at all. Like none yall. The chicken was ok but I had way more huge mushrooms than actual chicken. My husband ordered tuna and I kid you not it was so overcooked that we almost sent it back thinking it was pork.. overall we were ready to leave asap. I'd rather spend more money and go somewhere else. Yuki is an amazing spot and I think we will just stick with that. read more

I've been here twice now. The first time (almost two years ago), I remember the maki being OK. This time, I couldn't finish it. It's really bland and colorless. I only ordered the California roll and two vegetable maki, so I wouldn't touch anything more serious sushi than that unless you have a strong stomach. My husband ordered off the Chinese menu, and he said the shrimp tempura was just "OK". We accidentally (through the language barrier) got an extra entree of chicken tempura, and that was the best thing I've had there! But it was still only average. Thus, if you are a big sushi person, don't go here. You will be disappointed. If you haven't had fantastic, big-city quality sushi, give it a try. You may like it. I hope that doesn't sound culturally condescending, but there you go. Honestly, it's a rural(ish) thing, though we had amazing sushi in Iowa City. Go figure. I have yet to find any in Bowling Green. Finally, I dislike the decor, which looks like a gaudy Chinese buffet. I think they're trying to do both Chinese with Japanese on the side, which leads to a reduction in the quality of their Japanese items. But they may need to do both for the local market. I don't know. I just know that I don't want to come here again unless I get a craving for cheap Chinese that I won't mind regretting later. But, yes, it is cheap. read more

This is actually the first Japanese restaurant I've been to here in KY, and it was fine. We ordered the food take-out and it was sitting there when we got there half an hour later (we had to walk...). The exterior of the restaurant probably doesn't do it justice, as I've noticed that many restaurants here in Bowling Green look like fast-food. This restaurant offers unagi, yay! It didn't call it unagi because nobody would know what the hell that is. Anyway, an unadon was 14.99... a bit too expensive for me, in my opinion, but I went with the hand roll instead (which was also a bit too pricey). AND in addition, it offers sushi rolls, not just cooked meat and fried rice... My friend got the teriyaki chicken, which had potatoes... so um, that wasn't okay with us. The taste was okay, but it was nothing to write home about. So I'm giving it a 3 because it's Japanese food in KY, and I'm impressed that it's decent. read more

I often travel for work. Nearly every day I can, I get sushi. I've probably been to 100+ sushi restaurants. I would rank Ichiban in the top 10. Why? Well, it's not the atmosphere. There weren't many customers when I went around 7:00p on a Tuesday. The restaurant's layout is awkward and doesn't give off a cost vibe. Was it the sushi? I'd rank it at an 8/10 for taste. Beyond solid, but not the best I've had. Here's what it is: the quality-to-value ratio is off the charts. It's beyond belief. I ordered a 15pc sashimi dinner, and I couldn't believe how generous the portions were. The selection was really good (toro tuna, white tuna, salmon, red snapper, yellowtail, and something else. No mackerel or filler pieces. Cuts were thick, and the temperature was good. The chef actually put 16 pieces on the tray. The price? Under $16! It also included a starter salad and miso soup. I also ordered the Ichiban roll, hot tea, seaweed salad, and 2 sides of teriyaki veggies, and the total was around $42. This is at least $60-75 anywhere else. For the price, you will not find better quality anywhere. Check this place out. read more

Ichiban is probably my favorite place to go for a quick, low stress Asian food dinning experience. Their eggs rolls are amazing and I could drink the Yum Yum Sauce by the bottle. It's a good thing they leave a bottle of it on the table for you! The price varies a lot depending on what you get, if you go for tempura, fried rice, or a noodle dish, it is fairly cheap. However, if you get any of the "dinner specials" the price almost doubles and the main difference is added veggies. The sushi is okay, but I haven't found any better sushi in Bowling Green. The servers are always really attentive and pleasant, but not annoyingly so. In my opinion, it is the best Japanese place in Bowling Green. Nothing will blow your mind, but it is overall really good food and it is well priced. If you are looking for exceptional Japanese, head to Nashville. But if you don't feel like driving, Ichiban's is definitely a good alternative. P.S. The only place in Bowling Green that serves better Asian food is Thai Thai, but it is pretty close. read more

Wow. I have never been so put off by a restaurant (or more importantly its staff!) in my life. Ichiban has been a favorite of ours for more than ten years and they've always been great, until tonight. While there were only 3 other tables in the whole restaurant we waited forever for our food, sushi didn't come out until we were finished with everything else and I asked about it for the 3rd time. Drink refills were never offered until the meal was clearly finished, and then when I asked for a to go box for my leftovers it took another ten minutes to get that (the table beside us asked and got one in the meantime) and when mine finally came out it was wet. I wiped it out thinking it was probably condensation but that's when I noticed it smelled like lemon and bleach. Wow. Just wow. I left the box on the table, still left a tip because I'm not a monster, and went up front to pay. The next part is where I got frustrated. The lady at the front counter was rude and acted like I was bothering her by coming up to pay. She almost charged me for the drive thru's order but realized she had confused them and asked me for the third time what all I had tonight. She finally rang us up, didn't work the first time and had to run my card again. No biggie, but I pulled up by Bank app to confirm because I've been scammed this way before. I wasn't rude about it, but she rolled her eyes and mouthed off about how she just said it didn't go through. After slinging the receipt at me she answers the phone and I tried to quietly ask her if I needed to sign, sometimes you don't have to and I wasn't sure. She ignored me until the call was over and looked up like I was a brand new customer and asked "what can I get you all tonight?" Seriously. I never even stepped away from right in front of her. I hate to say it but I won't be back. Ever. I don't expect perfection, I've worked in the service industry for years and I get it's hard and people can be jerks sometimes, but this was so awful I literally felt compelled to leave my first ever Yelp review. So, be forewarned, this place is NOT the Ichiban I've always known and adored. read more

I go to the one at 31 W bypass every once in a while with my boyfriend but yet we never get any service. Every time we go in there our waitress literally forgets about us and then a male waiter will have to come and serve us for some reason. I've watched people get their food, which were just as complicated as mine, before mine. I've been there a few times and we aren't rude or disrespectful at all but she tends to forget us.
