My friend recommended a Chinese restaurant in his area known for Cantonese dishes. When we show up to a place called Ichi Ramen, I was definitely confused. We were able to easily get a table for four at 7 PM. By the time we finished, the entire restaurant was full, and not one bowl of ramen to be seen. The food: Rice Noodle Roll w/Braised Brisket Pot - a mixture of lots of different textures from slightly chewy and bouncy rice noodle rolls, tender beef, soft and gelatinous beef tendon, and some firm king oyster mushrooms. A lot of wok flavor. Worth the trip just for this dish. Pan Fried Noodle with Honey Beef - a unique combination of fried noodles topped with honey pepper beef, bell peppers, and onions. Never had this combination before, but it works. Sautéed Eggplant & String Beans with XO Sauce - not much XO flavor, but the eggplant is nicely cooked. After the meal, I looked on Yelp to see what other people ordered. I was very surprised to see the low rating. The food is great here and the prices are reasonable. This is a Cantonese restaurant, not whatever Ichi Ramen leads you to believe. This is also an excellent Chinese Canton Bistro by the name of Hsing Long 興隆小館. I saw several non-Chinese ordering to-goes. The dine-in patrons are all Chinese. Ordering in Canton wins some smiles from the waitresses. We came with an expert in Cantonese foods. She brought us here twice in two weeks. We ordered 11 dishes and all of them great. I will probably come again, even from South Bay. If I would pick 牛腩腸粉煲 Rice Noodle Roll with Braised Beef Briskets in a clay pot and one of the 煎米粉 Fried Vermicelli. If you come after 5pm, try the 煲仔飯 Clay Pot rice. Maybe because they're Chinese and don't want to pay for the name change, but either way, I think they could be making more business if people knew it is actually called Hing Lung. My family has been eating at Hing Lung (the Chinatown) location since I was a little girl. Their dishes are so nostalgic and each bite reminds me of home. They cook their dishes in a fiery fire that burns under their huge woks that gets used all day to make these amazing meals. "Wok hay" is the term we Chinese people use when we describe a dish that has been cooked correctly using a good wok and a ferocious fire. I don't think you can go wrong with any dish here honestly. [APPETIZERS] CHINESE DONUT WRAPPED IN FLAT NOODLE: This dish isnt served at many restaurants so its a must-get when I come here. The noodles and chinese donut always tastes fresh. Ichi Ramen is really Hing Lung San Bruno edition. I prefer this location over the South San Francisco location due to ample parking and the modern clean setting. Customer service here is also more friendly and attentive. I always order the piping hot pork liver congee and vary between a Chinese donut side or the fermented tofu water spinach. Ichi Ramen is a solid spot. Even though the name says ramen, I think they have really good Chinese food. I have been here a few times and tried different dishes, and everything I had was great. But the one thing I keep coming back for is their wonton soup. The broth is full of flavor, and the wontons are packed with shrimp and pork. The skin is thin and smooth, just how I like it. They do not hold back either. The soup has a generous amount of wontons, which makes it worth it. Dining here is casual. They have plenty of tables, but I would not come with a big group. Service is simple and to the point. They give you a menu, take your order, bring the food, and handle the check. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done. Got the rice noodle with beef stew, the meat was so tender, rich and flavorful, 9/10! The soy sauce chow mein had chewy egg noodles, crisp bean sprouts, but not enough soy sauce, 8/10. Word to the wise: if you can't stomach a dirty dining room, gross bathrooms, and rude severs, go to Panda Express or PF Chang's. Behind them was where they kept the chinese fried donuts inside a glass cabinet. I was chatting with my wife and all of a sudden, I noticed the male gentleman that was just seated bounced right out of his seat and would not sit down. I looked to see what he was looking at. He was looking at a coach roache that was crawling against the wall where his table was. The gentleman had to flag down a waitress. Using a napkin the waitress smashed and removed it. He sat back down afterward, but with a weary feeling. Afterwards they had setup a large table for a group of people next to us. There were 7 of them. Only a couple sat down, as they were waiting for the rest of the 5 people to show. They ordered and later the rest of the group showed. By now, our porridge dish had arrived. It was really bland and we had to ask for some salt. While we were consuming the porridge, a lot of dishes were being served to the table of 7. We were still waiting for our final dish of Pan Fried Rice Vermicelli. Then, I saw the waitress bring the pan fried rice vermicelli with ground beef along with another dish in her hand. She placed both dished in the table of 7. I stopped her afterwards and with a gentle voice, I said, "I think that pan fried rice vermicelli is ours, as we got here 1st and had ordered before the table of 7. One of the guys sitting at the table of 7, insisted that it belongs to their table. I was not going to argue over the dish with him. So then, I hear the kitchen staff asking, "there were supposed to be two orders of the pan fried?" The waitress answered yes. We waited some more (another 20 minutes) and every other customer were getting their orders served. I finally have to tell the waitress to just give me the check, as I didn't want to wait any longer. So, I want to elaborate: * If you were a waitress and your customer complaint that she served your dish to the wrong table, would be be apologetic? * Would you go to the kitchen and ensure that the cooks immediately work on that dish 1st before working any other order that's on their radar? So here's what happen, after we confronted the waitress about her placing our dish to the wrong table..............Not one word of apology came from her. She didn't try to come over to smooth things out and let us know that the kitchen is working on it now. She should be saying, "it shoudn't be too long and it will be out for you shortly". Instead, she just ignored us afterwards. There were no positive skillful customer interaction efforts made by the waitress. Nor did she went to the kitchen to tell them to make my dish a priority. Everyone's order was coming out but ours. There was really no excuse for our order to be delayed that long, as I mentioned you no longer have to wait to be seated down. At the time of my visit, they were not busy. I don't know if any of you had similar experience at this place. But, their customer service have gone down hill. read more

I was in need of some nice hot soup and saw the sign for ICHI RAMEN. I went in for ramen but immediately saw all Chinese letters and all Chinese food. There is a *tiny* section of the menu devoted to ramen, but I would never order Mexican food in Canada, so why order ramen in a Chinese restaurant? I try not to set myself up for dissapointment. I sat down and it took a while to get a cup of hot water. I really appreciated that they gave me this. I live on hot water. However, I was if owed for the next 15 minutes and based on the limited options (I briefly thought to just settle and get a congee since everyone seemed to be enjoying their food -- this restaurant was not empty) but in the end I left. They collected the dirty dishes, clean tables, bring out the food to customers, collecting money and getting the dishes to customers at the same time. They never change their gloves and they don't even wash their hands. We ate here once a long time ago but we usually ordered food to go. They are always busy. This place is not big. But it still takes up to an hour for seating. But today we are lucky only needed to wait for ten minutes. -The Pork Liver Porridge is silky smooth and creamy, loved the texture. -The Beef Brisket with Rice Noodle Roll is tender and tasty. -The Thai Style Stri-Fried Rice Noodle is also good. -The Deep Fried Dough Strips and "Ox Tongue Pastry" were too dense and doughy. I've been here since it first opened and this restaurant is 100% a Hing Lung disguised as a ramen restaurant. There are even signs inside calling this place Hing Lung. Honestly, regardless it still makes no sense to keep the Ichi Ramen name because it just confuses new customers expecting a ramen shop and you're getting HK style cuisine that you get at any other Hing Lung instead. It's like walking into a Chick-Fil-A, but to your surprise it turns out it's actually an Arby's. If I'm being honest, out of any Hing Lung I have been to this is definitely on the bottom of my rankings. Just not great quality, service is not friendly at all, cleanliness isn't the best either, and the name of the restaurant doesn't help either. This place has a 2.5 star rating with over 200 reviews for a reason. My table ordered the BBQ Pork and Roast Duck Rice ($15.95), House special pan fried noodle ($14.95), Stir Fried Clams w/Black Bean Sauce ($16.95), and the Eggplant in Garlic Sauce Clay Pot ($13.95). The portions for the BBQ Pork and Roast Duck Rice were pretty big, but this might be one of the worst BBQ Pork and Roasted Ducks that I've had. The pork and duck both had basically no flavor at all and were very dry and tough. Pan fried noodles were okay, but didn't taste super fresh. Stir Fried Clams w/Black Bean Sauce had a lot of clams that were just missing meat. Came here at 10:30am on a Sunday, many folks here for classic Cantonese dim sum fare like chow fun and porridge. You know a place is good when there's locals lining out the door by 11am. The veggie tofu rolls and char siu were delightful. Never had such tender char siu that was warm but still had great lightly sweet flavor. We also ordered the eggplant claypot, it's a dish that has fish in its name but the dish never has fish. But this one actually had tender pieces of fish along with the eggplant. Confused... my Sister-In-Law tells me this Hong Kong style cafe is or is related to the old Hing Lung in San Francisco and serves more HK cafe food than Japanese ramen. This is actually Hing Lung if you know how to read the Chinese name. What a big ass mistake to get lunch here! We dropped in to order take out at 12:50. They were not busy as in lines out the door. I think business was manageable. We waited over 40 minutes for our order. By the time I got home, I saw they gave us the wet ingredients for the crispy noodles but no noodles. What the heck am I suppose to do with the wet ingredients? The BBQ pork was dry. There is no glaze on it or it's extremely old. Chow fun was a gloopy mess. Service was horrible. Food is excellent but service needs improvement. Visited on a Saturday and the small place with about 10-12 tables was packed by 11am. The service was quick when they bring you the bill and are removing dishes from your table in an attempt to get you out of there. It was a struggle getting a refill of hot tea and had to ask repeatedly and after asking three times, it finally arrived. The portion size is average and prices are fair. This is Hing Lung, a HK style cafe - I don't know why it's called Ichi Ramen but I did see ramen on their menu which I never tried. I come here for porridge (add a order of you tiao - fried dough stick), won ton or shrimp dumpling noodle soup, and beef stew over rice. Beef stew takes longer to cook so be prepared to wait. Those dishes are good. Restaurant is small and packed with tables pretty close together. A few tables for 4 (or add a seat for 5), but not recommended for big groups, There was a bit of a wait Sunday at 1p but by 2p there were some open tables for 2. It's time to correct the rating of this place upwards. It's probably closer to a 4 star, but due to the extreme inaccuracy of the overall rating, I'm calling it 5 stars. What they serve is excellent. Plus they were nice enough to let us sit, 20 minutes before closing. Thumbs up! Firstly, as a few has pointed out, this is "Hing Lung" in Chinese, but they kept the English name for reasons unknown. The menu is 3/4 Hong Kong café and 1/4 ramen. Ignore the ramen part. Don't even look at it. The entire staff is clearly HK folks, so don't torture yourself. Their HK style egg noodles are spot on! Have some wonton, have some shui gaw, they are both excellent. Their most popular dish is the beef brisket, beef tendon, over rice rolls (the same kind as those served at dim sum). It's easily their signature dish and I highly recommend this. It's a generous portion too. I like ordering a veggie, and the Chinese broccoli or gai lan is blanched tender and delicious, a stunningly natural green beauty. Lastly, I have a soft spot for HK style (dim sum version) shrimp stuffed eggplant. Theirs is very good. The sauce is also great for dipping the gai lan. read more

Braised beef brisket over rice noodle roll $10.95 is a must! Just look around at every table and everyone orders one. We also tried the wasabi pork tripe with cold chicken -- very unique and super tasty but expensive $15.95 -- pass on salty yolk pumpkin. I love salted yolk anything but this one wasn't very flavorful and tasted dry, like it was mostly just flour batter.
