The bread here is really affordable! For the price, you can't find anything else comparable if you are vegetarian or vegan eater so the value exists in their products. I love their taro bun and bbq pork bun the most, and their buns is the reason that I keep coming back. But what I really think that Jack needs to improve on is his attitude with his customers. I've seen him treat an older Asian customer different than a younger non-Asian customer totally different. Probably because he knows that the younger non-Asian customer is more likely have left a bad review if he would have mistreated them and so he was trying to keep up the best image for the business, but I think that is unfair because every customer should be treated equally. Ibun is the bakery in all of Chinatown. They have a small variety but the bread/pastry does not taste generic like 85, six ping and kamalan. They make their own vegan friendly entrees, vegan sides, soy milk, grass jelly drinks which is a plus because most places will sell it from a can. I first found out about this place because I was searching for a new vegan restaurant to try out. The place provides a few Taiwanese style vegan dishes and it was not bad compared to other vegan restaurants in the Houston. Their price is really cheap which is a big bonus. I've tried follow dishes and here are my reviews: Faux meat over rice: This is essentially braised pork over rice makeover, it's almost like the real one! Faux smoked goose meat: I couldn't tell it was the fake meat. Braised soy protein: It was an ok. As I don't like plain things in general. Vegetarian eel: My friends thought it taste weird but I liked the flavor. If you naturally like seafood flavor, you will enjoy this dish. I always bought too much bread and cookies from them and ended up finish them all. You'd be surprised how good the bread and cookies can be even it's been labeled as vegetarian/vegan. I bought a birthday cake from them once, and it was ravished by all my friends. The cake was fluffy, not overly sweet and very fresh. Their attendants are always very sweet and patient to explain the ingredients to me. I highly recommend this place! read more

Came here twice and never busy here. No surprise. The staff looks miserable there and their food eh... I tasted better. The baked goods don't taste fresh and pretty stingy will their fillings. Took first 2 bites no filling thought they forgot to add until a few more bites into it then u a quarter size of the filling. All their baked goods get a quarter sized filling. I am a Taiwanese American meat-eater in a long-term relationship with a vegetarian. Our relationship is full of scenes like this: I come across a restaurant that serves a Taiwanese comfort food that I haven't had in a really long time; I get really excited to introduce a piece of my culture and childhood with my partner, but the food has meat in it and I can't share a single bite. I try to explain in words, but the point doesn't really come across. I feel sad that we can't experience something I love so much, together. On a recent visit to Houston from Austin, I came across IBUN and just had to stop by on the way home. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I felt emotional when I saw the menu. It had all of my favorite foods, but vegetarian! We got some veggie dumplings and the clay pot rice, as well as some baked goods. We also grabbed some of the frozen faux meats to take home to cook with. It truly felt amazing to share a couple of plates and talk about food that my mom made when I was a child, and food that I ate on visits to Taiwan. The food was excellent - I had planned to stop by another restaurant later to sate my carnivorous tastes, but the food was filling and flavorful, so much that I didn't crave "real" meat afterwards at all. It's in a strip mall that's actually a real mall inside, so you have to walk into the shopping center to find the bakery. The buns are $1 each and great value for your money. I was looking to buy a vegan birthday cake for my best friend. There weren't many options in Houston but luckily found IBUN bakery. I had a talk with the shop about how it took them several years to developed their recipe for a vegan cake. The issue was vegan cakes are typically dense and they wanted to make it light. They did an amazing job! It was the lightest vegan cake my best friend has ever had. Because the shop makes asian style cakes, it wasn't very sweet and the fresh fruit was a nice compliment to the light cake. Bonus they offered to give us candles for the cake. One of the hardest things about no longer eating meat is missing out on Taiwanese food. IBUN has greatly softened that blow. The food here is authentic and delicious. My partner and I ended up here after a full day of shopping, and I couldn't contain my excitement when I realized that so many of the things I missed eating as a child were available in vegetarian (or vegan!) form at IBUN. We ordered the stewed pork rice (lu rou fan/lo ba png) and the bbq pork rice. I spotted the curried meat pastry at the register, and immediately bought two. We ate them while waiting for the food to come out. The flavor was exactly what I remembered, and the pastry was especially flaky and light for being vegan. I'm going to buy a bunch of these to gobble down before my next flight. After a short while, our orders came out. Along with the main dish, the plates had a bunch of little sides of Taiwanese traditional cold dishes and veggies. These were delicious, but the stewed pork rice was the star of the show. You could tell that a lot of love was put into these dishes, and according to the owner, his father spent 20 years perfecting this dish. The flavor was complex and savory, and it really brought back the sense of happiness that comes from eating your favorite comfort food. IBUN also sells this meat sauce to bring home. The bbq pork rice was also good, but lu rou fan holds a bigger place in my heart. After eating, we bought a bunch of other bakery treats to take home. We also bought two glutinous rice balls (bah tzang/zongzi). The bah tzang were well spiced, and the mushrooms inside were super savory. I ate mine with a lil bit of soy sauce out of habit, but it didn't need it. We've been finishing the other traditional pastries over the past couple of days, and each one has been fantastic. I'm especially impressed by IBUN's ability to make vegan pineapple cakes. The owner was very proud of those, and I can tell why. If you're a vegetarian or vegan and you miss traditional Taiwanese food or you're just trying to reduce the amount of meat that you eat, IBUN will not let you down!!! IBUN is the best Taiwanese bakery you've never heard of (until now). They're literally a hidden gem, tucked inside trashy ol' Dynasty Plaza mall, with a storefront to match. But don't let looks deceive, because they're definitely churning out breads that compete with the best. I do love Kamalan and Six Ping, but I really feel like IBUN's buns are often on par or even better than both. For example, IBUN's peanut bun, coconut bun, and custard buns are THE BEST renditions of each I have found in Houston. The peanut bun especially is otherworldly. You think Kamalan makes a great peanut bun? Indeed they do but IBUN's is somehow better with even tastier nutty peanut butter. It's a confectionery experience I'd put on the level of King Bakery's fresh bo luo or Eck Bakery's egg custard tart. They might not have the incredible variety of the newer, fancier bakeries, but you can be sure to see their own set of unique items outside of the traditional Chinese/Taiwanese breads. Like the bamboo charcoal walnut bun. IBUN might be one of the only two bakeries in town that make this (Kamalan's the other). Also many vegetarian goods like mock BBQ pork buns, mock pork sung buns, and plenty of non-baked vegetarian items. I can't attest to IBUN's breads being "healthier" (after all, it's still sweetbread), but I will say that their base milk bread tastes very similar to Kamalan's which is quite light, not too sweet or rich, and preservative-free. Finally, I love coming here because of the prices. Almost all breads cost $1 like the old school places (Olympic, Merryland, I-Ping). They do skimp out on some fillings compared to Kamalan or Six Ping, but when you look at quality/cost, IBUN still wins on value hands down. I especially like how they've got sampler trios that are like twice the size of a regular bun but only 50% more expensive. I found this place that sells vegetarian/ vegan Taiwanese style bakery in a mall on Bellaire! And I am pleasantly surprised how much I like all the baked good and food I bought! I don't think I can ever become a vegetarian let alone vegan as I love my meats but this place makes all the breads and cakes so tasty without incorporating meat products or even egg products. I discovered this place about 2 months ago, I think this is a vegetarian bakery or at the least they sell vegetarian pastries/dishes. It's hidden inside the Dynasty Plaza. I like it here, It's clean, the owners/employees are nice. Heck they even remembered me the second time I came even after I highlighted my hair they remembered and complimented me haha, this would be my 3rd time now and I cut my hair a bit short and she still remembers me as the egg tart guy and even suggested the coconut tart. (I prefer my egg though) Pastries, Cakes, Cookies are nice here. Not too sweet, decently stuffed, and the prices are cheaper then other bakeries around $1 for pastries and $3 for box of cookies, and $4-5 for cakes? Im not a huge fan of their savory buns and the drinks are not great. The sweets are good though, not overly sweet. My favorite is this chocolate shortbread cookie. So flaky and yum!
