Duy's is a very unassuming restaurant/shop that's off to the side of a large plaza in Alief/Chinatown area of Houston. Its super casual and has the restaurant portion for sit down dining and quite a bit of takeout/vegetarian ingredients. My partner and I came in a Sunday afternoon and it was pretty quiet. Staff were extremely kind and friendly. You order and pay at the cashier then sit at a table to wait for your orser. We got the vegetarian cold cut combo banh mi, the lo mein, and the rice rolls. Everything was full of flavor and we did not miss animal protein. The banh mi had a nice, crisp bread along with a good amount of veggies and vegetarian cold cuts. The lo mein was very flavorful and the mushrooms really stood out as a nice unami bomb. The veggies were well cooked too and maintained crispness. My favorite was the rice rolls, which had the perfect texture, velvety, slightly QQ, and had a great filling along with a nice sauce. The veggies that accompanied it were a great addition too. My partner and I ended up getting a couple of their ready made dishes to take home and they were only $8 each. They were also delicious (basil kidney and stuffed bitter melon). I think the food here is solid and still affordable. To me, its a great restaurant that puts out good food that also happens to be vegetarian. Duy's Vegetarian Cafe is my favorite vegan restaurant in Bellaire. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance is very casual and not fancy by any means but the food and service at this family-owned and operated are pretty good.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The older lady behind the counter that puts the Banh Mis and drinks together is the sweetest and friendliest. She's always so incredibly welcoming but it's a hit or miss with the guys at the counter. The menu consists of a lot of processed mock meat and dry mushrooms so my favorite dishes to oder are the Banh Mi Bi and Mi Xao noodle dish with tofu as these do not have mock meat in them. They have a wide variety of ready-to-eat, packaged hot foods and desserts on display for customers to grab and go. They also make a delicious, refreshing artichoke drink that isn't overly sweet. Recently I've been liking a lot of the vegetarian Vietnamese food, especially the spring rolls and that's why here I am visiting the one seems to be one of the popular spots near Chinatown. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a cute cozy family owned shop kinda hidden away from the main street but they got everything![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a small dining area with a small grocery section when you enter.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The aunties can't speak English but lucky me there was a young man working who can, he speaks mandarin too. He recommended me to get this plate of spring rolls. They have this one in my picture and another box that's with the vegetarian meats. The spring rolls' texture is nothing what I expected. From the look of it I thought it's got crispy filling but it was rather tasting stale. So I took a closer look, I think there are dried carrots and shallots or onions, and a lot of vermicelli. Personally, I would like the fresh veggies over the dried ones, because when they turn moist they become little too chewy for me. Also I wish the ratio of the vermicelli and veggies are more balanced, the rolls' flavor overall is still very refreshing to eat though. The fish sauce was good too, not too salty and fishy, it's on the more fragrant side. For this box of rolls I paid $10, which is little pricey for me since I have tried better for half that price. But maybe I will be back again and try other things on the menu one day. read more

YUM! Duy Sandwiches was an amazing find for vegetarian Vietnamese food in Alief/Sharpstown! I love visiting this part of town to have authentic Vietnamese dishes but often struggle to find tofu options, especially for banh mi, as most places only offer pork, beef, or chicken and I don't eat meat. I actually ended up finding Duy through Google Maps while looking for new banh mi spots and was thoroughly pleased. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The store is fairly small but offers both packaged prepared food items, as well as hot dishes to order.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Their menu has a lot of options and everything is reasonably priced. Their shredded chicken and also their combo banh mi are full of flavor and the bread has just the right amount of crunch/freshness. This is a grab and go or dine inside cafe, and it is predominantly vegetarian. On one side of the cafe, there is a huge table with an array of already prepared dishes of tofu, vegetables, egg rolls, spring rolls, snacks, and there are desserts lined up at the counter and refrigerated shelves. [[HIGHLIGHT]]On the other side of the cafe, there are tables to sit and eat, and there are menus stacked up on the counter to view.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] When I walked in, there were two guys sitting at a table, so there was no service or staff to wait on them at all (probably not needed). The cashier at the counter was quick in totaling up the cost and packaging of my containers into a bag, so it was an easy 'get and go' deal for me. I tried the fried rice, which was mixed with vegetables and tofu, and it was a little bland - had to add black pepper and spicy sauce to eat it. The stir fried beans, carrots, and tofu was lightly seasoned as well, so if you like well seasoned dishes, this would not be the ideal location. We came in and ordered their lemongrass tofu banh mi, banh cuon, spring rolls, and tofu bun vermicelli. I think our favorite was definitely the lemongrass tofu banh mi. The bread was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, the lemongrass flavor came through on the tofu, the tofu texture was great, and the veggies were fresh. Their banh cuon was pretty good. But, it wasn't as flavorful as the banh cuon from thien thanh. It helps to add the fish sauce on top. Unfortunately, the spring rolls and the tofu vermicelli weren't our cup of tea. The spring rolls had raw bean sprouts and a vegetable that we didn't enjoy. The tofu vermicelli also had a really strong mustard green in it that overpowered everything else in the dish. This place has got a pretty extensive menu to choose from. Lots of options: banh mi, soups, noodles, rice, curries, etc! I got the spring roll wraps. One with shrimp and another with pork floss. Both wraps were kind of flavorless to me. Don't think I would get them again. The house combination Banh Mi was delicious though. The bread was crispy and the meat tasted real. My friend was craving this spot so we came in for lunch over the weekend. I was intrigued to hear about a vegetarian Vietnamese spot and was super excited to try. The shop is pretty small, but there's a good amount of tables for dine in as well as other tables set up with things you can buy. Service here is super quick and the servers mainly speak Viet. We got the bun bo hue, hu tieu, and lemongrass tofu banh mi. The bun bo hue does not taste like bun bo hue made with meat, but it was still really good and super flavorful. If you and/or an chay (Buddhism Vegeterian) then this is a great place for to-go or dine in cafeteria style. Interior is pretty simple and overall clean. Service is always friendly. My family have been coming here, especially for their banh mi. It can be a day later and their banh mi is still nice and soft. Just throw it in the air fryer if you're eating it later! It doesn't even matter which one you get, all their banh mi are delicious but can never be wrong with banh mi dac biet. If you're fighting on who pay, especially with an uncle who has cash... they will always pick the cash payer, just an FYI. The vermicelli noodles (usually at the front) is not my favorite compare to other do chay restaurants but not bad for an-chay-to-go. Tea is always extra and they only have jasmine tea. There's a nice blend of vegetables with the fake meat. The bread was flaky and a great car ride meal on the drive back to Dallas. I ate mines two hours after we bought it and it was still delicious. My first time at Duy's resulted in me being so enamored with the food, that I didn't even realize it was vegetarian. I was convinced I was eating banh mi dac biet but after realizing there was no meat, I was in disbelief to learn it was completely chay (#1). If the execution is enough to fool a carnivore into wanting more, then they're as legit of a vegetarian eatery as they come. Like any good Vietnamese bakery, the shop is loaded with all sorts of good stuff. The banh mi gets all the shine due to the namesake but their pre packaged offerings from noodles to rolls to sticky rice is close to hypeworthy. I've always appreciated their house special (dac biet) banh mi; it's packed full of the fake meat fixins, lots of quality cilantro, pickled veg, and fake pate, and the bread is fluffy and airy. They are also a good option for catering, as I've seen them make some really awesome platters of everything from noodles to desserts. Nothing like having a party of faux canh chua and cha lua, it'd be perfect for special occasions and potluck parties. Prices are affordable and they also accept credit cards. While I know they used to offer seating, I haven't seen any table + chair setup since the pandemic began. Right now it's been primarily a takeout spot and I've never seen it crowded. The ladies behind the counter are the nicest people I've encountered. Last but not least, I really like their caphe sua da.
