So he fixed one door for me and installed 2 garage door openers. After 2 weeks on of the units quit working. He put off coming to evaluate, the proposed that i approach Genie to get a replacement for the unit he had purchased, he said he would approach Genie for the replacement, apparently Genie would not replace the defective unit he said he would just replace it. Still waiting -- 6mo now no replacement. Gonna do it my self. Terrible service. read more

My experience with "I know a guy" was just ok, I was hoping for better. Overall I'm happy with my garage door and the installation but getting there was painful and the lack of communication warrants a 1-star rating. I first got in touch with TJ at the advice of another contractor. I called at 7:30 pm on a weekday and he answered promptly, which was nice. I sent photos of the inside of my garage and he sent a link, where my husband and I chose a garage door design. He sent a bid a few days later. But after that, things seemed to go downhill. Every week after we chose the garage door design, I sent text messages to TJ after he failed to follow-up on turnaround times from order-date to install or information on how to proceed with ordering / scheduling. I would send a text, he would respond promptly that he would "hear back tomorrow," then I'd never hear back after "tomorrow." One week later I was texting again asking the same question. This became a very consistent pattern, which was disappointing. Then 4 weeks later when I asked how we proceed, he asked me to "choose a garage door style," which we had already done. It was frustrating. As a client his prices were good but I felt very forgotten. We finally got him a deposit. He said turnaround time was 3-4 weeks. The door took 5 weeks and 5.5 weeks until install (after 4 weeks of poor communication). I was self-employed for many years and understand the challenges of feeling inundated with clientele / calls. As a sole proprietor, I was frustrated that there was not more time in a day to return phone calls and complete all the necessary evils of owning a business. But I also understood when I needed help, and hired a secretary part-time during my busy seasons. It took away from my bottom-line, but in the end it also kept my clients happier and my reviews better. read more

I had a unique issue with my garage opener, it was a prior to 1993 liftmaster. Somehow the opening code was open and neighbors openers were opening our door phantomly without us knowing. Waking up in the morning and our door was open, or coming home and it would be open. Liftmaster sent us a new opener, and when i called "I know a guy" to do the install, they rearranged their schedule to get mine done the next day. TJ is an amazing businessman. 2 days before xmas we had a major garage door mishap - like, it was hanging from the suspension wire. Called Sears - it takes 2 weeks just to order the door - had another local business come out - gives me an estimate that I knew was outrageous, and then tries to charge me just for the estimate! Finally, I called TJ and he miraculously was able to get the door from his supplier and have it installed that day! To top it off, his price was comparable to Sears, a national retailer! TJ came out and gave me a decent estimate for a garage door opener and trim. Install date was a week later, as they were busy. On install day, they had a start time window of 8:00 - 10:00, and a worker actually showed up at early at 7:50 am, which was greatly appreciated. However, they did not bring the trim for the garage, stating they didn't have three matching pieces. Before they were done, TJ said the worker that was with him was going to go pick up the trim as soon as they were done installing the garage door opener. Since they had a two hours window to install and got to my location early, I have to wonder why the worker didn't just go pick up the trim as soon as the realized they did not have it, as they finished the install in about 30 minutes and still had an 1 1/2 hour buffer in their "window" to show up and install. TJ stated this worker was going to pick up the trim, and that I didn't need to be home for them to finish this up - freeing up the rest of my day. Sadly, nothing else was said other than I could pay for the trim separately if I wanted. I was seriously disappointed when I got home later in the day and the trim work was not completed. I contacted TJ, who then stated they would be back later in the week, maybe Friday but probably Saturday (install was on a Tuesday). Which made me wonder why the big deal about saying the worker was going to pick up the trim as soon as they were done with the install. It truly didn't matter when they were going to pick up the trim if they were not coming back to install it! I let TJ know those words implied they were going to be back that day to finish the job, which was why I was disappointed it had not been completed. Fast forward to Friday. No trim. Then Saturday. No trim. Again I contact TJ, who gets upset with me, stating he didn't promise or confirm Saturday for the trim work to be completed. I offered to have him give me a refund on the trim, as it seemed they did not want to finish the job. TJ seemed seriously to not understand why I was upset, when his lack of communication had me believing they would never be back to finish what they were contracted to do and that I would have to hire someone else to finish what they started. TJ stated that for sure it would be done on Monday. Personally, I did not cause the second trip to my site as I did not forget to pick up or order the trim in a timely manner. I don't appreciate working with someone who does not accurately communicate completion time/dates. This one day, one hour job got completed in six days, with TJ being upset at me for expecting better service. I have two very large projects and several small ones to be completed but will be looking elsewhere for a general contractor. read more

Took 4-5 calls to get them to install a new opener. When the guy answers the phone he doesn't take any of your information down and just wants to get off the phone with you. They didn't show up the night they were suppose to come and called the next day. Probably because he guy didn't get my info the first 5 times. They finally came out a week later (2 hours late). They guy did installed the new opener just fine but left all the old parts on the floor and didn't even remove the old motion sensors from before, just put the new ones right on top. Called them again to take a look at a crack in the middle of the top section (probably from the guy who installed it). The guy said he would be there in 30 min. Took him 2-3 hours to finally get there and he suggested a whole new section! I asked him to email me an estimate which he never did ( go figure). I would NOT use these guys at all! I had a guy from Absolute Garage Door come out and he fixed the crack and installed new springs in the same day for a great price. He was even on time!! read more

Said he was busy and could I hold or he could call me right back. I said either, he said he'd call me right back, I gave him my phone #, and 2 and 1/2 hours later I still had not receive a call back.
