"The Third Time's the Charm!"
The Langsford Landing Hy-Vee is now the third nearby supermarket to gain one of their upscale Market Grille restaurants, and it is easy to see that they have learned from every opening and actually communicated with their customers!
While it is located under the same roof as the grocery store, you do not have to be bothered by shopping carts blocking the isle or coupon counters holding you up. If you come in through the store it will be right next to their more budget friendly "snack bar / food court" to allow for wallet based dining decisions. But coming in from their parking lot entrance you are treated to a more conventional restaurant experience: there is a traditional bar / cocktail lounge with booths and stools lining the bar for your happy hour pleasure, or passing the bar the hostess can seat you at one of their traditional tables or booths, but if the weather is good you ought to consider sitting out on their patio or the tables near the back of the restaurant and enjoy the unexpected lake view!
The first couple of times we were there both the manager and catering manager stopped by to get our initial impressions and comments - pretty neat, actually asking the customers. We also found the wait staff to be well trained, knowledgeable, helpful, and well supervised. Market Grill employees appear to have been promoted from the better "people persons" already employed by the store - score for employee owned businesses! Issues we had seen at the two other locations did not exist, and the overall experience benefits from that growth.
The menu has pretty much all you should expect from most above average restaurants. There is a great selection of sandwiches (including burgers and a very good Ruben); salads; entrees like pasta, chicken, seafood (do not overlook their scallops!), roast beef, and more than acceptable steaks. Vegan selections begin with sushi and go on from there. But do not miss their honey dipped dinner rolls!
Dinner specials are still evolving. There have been specials like $5 off any steaks, reduced pricing on appetizers, "family nights" (kids eat free from a special buffet featuring pizza, chicken wings, pasta, and all kinds of deserts), and other entrees. Like I said, management is asking their customers what they want, and making an effort to deliver.
Remember the bar I talked about earlier, bartenders can serve you from a menu of trendy cocktails, traditional mixed drinks, or from their adequate beer and wine lists.
Expect to pay around $18 - $20 for a full meal including beverages. With sandwiches you can come in a bit cheaper, and with wine and cocktails a bit more. So the prices are not out of line with other similar full menu / service restaurants in the area, and enjoy a better experience than some. While it is possible to find a better steak or pasta in the area, you also should expect to drain more of your credit card for it.
Yes, it is a bit up market from the grocery store snack bar / food court, but so is the menu and service. It is staying on our short list. read more
