The lady in charge when I went didn't know specifically what they had, but instantly knew what it cost when she saw it! In my case, as well as any owner of a Pyrex 9x13 baking pan, this trip was a major score. They have a $6 10x18 pan grate that fits snugly secured to the handles of the pan so you can roast meats as drippings fall 2" into the Pyrex. Also, the same "Winco" brand has a grate which fits inside the same glass Pyrex pan. If you want to elevate a small roast inside the 9x13, this $4 grate fits perfectly too. This stuff isn't easily found...just saying.

The slogans and jingles are memorable, and all is good and fine until you need to visit one. Let me guess, it goes something like this: You walk in looking for an item and an associate who can help you. You see someone in paint, but know they can't leave their post, so you continue looking. Aha! A person! Oh wait, that's a cardboard cutout. (This actually happened to me recently at a big box.) Finally, you find someone, and they tell you where to find the item in question. Only, the entire endeavor took way too long, meanwhile, the house is a mess while you're gallivanting the aisles. Enter Clark Devon Hardware. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted and offered assistance. Even if you are just browsing, others will ask you along the way. If you do ask for help, you will either be taken to the item or shown to a person who can help (as in, 'ask this person right over here,' who sees and waves). The team at Clark Devon is knowledgeable, kind, and no nonsense. They know you have things to do and places to be. They will be happy to help you and send you on your merry way. Clark Devon may not be the prettiest hardware store, and perhaps the big boxes may even have slightly cheaper prices (this is unconfirmed). However, it is my go-to for all hardware and home improvement needs, not only out of a desire to support a locally owned business, but because customer service counts for something too. If I am to offer one smidgen of feedback, it's that I wish they were open until later in the evening. For sometimes you come back from work and discover the closet rod has snapped in two, and you need parts to replace and fix.

Despite having some issues with the drain and having to bring in a plumber to assist with a portion of the work (which ended up delaying us about 1 1/2 days), everything that he estimated from both time and cost was exact. His work quality was great and he made it very painless by allowing me to select the tile and then picking it up to do the job. He is extremely knowledgeable and I will not only recommend him to others but will call on him when I need work from him in the future. Thank you again!

But if you are…read morea homeowner or handy person who likes to try and fix things at home yourself, you should become acquainted with GEM. This is an electrical supply house that has a large showroom of fixtures and all things electrical, and a parts supply house tacked on to the north end. For the handy person, its the parts supply that shines. There seems to be fewer and fewer electrical supply places where a homeowner can go and find parts these days. I am only familiar with two really fine places on the south side: Helsel-Jepperson in Chicago Heights and GEM in Alsip. Now understand, there are many more supply houses around, but these two make homeowners (non-professionals) feel right at home. For the D-I-Y person, Lowes or Home Depot cannot carry everything you might need. Sometimes you need a specialty item ... for example, if you are repairing some older stuff ... and a place like GEM can save the day. I was fixing an old floor lamp where the socket was broken from years of use. It was not a regular socket, but one with a larger base opening ... called a mogul. The big box stores did not have it, but GEM took care of my need. I could have gone on Amazon and found it, but I didn't even know what it was called (GEM enlightened me: a porcelain 3-way turn knob mogul socket with hickey). I brought the broken part into GEM and they had one for me two days later. All to say, when you you need a part that is a bit out of the ordinary give GEM a try, and they can usually get one for you. They can also offer any advice on install that you might need. Recommended.

The $0.99 reusable bag is 19 gallons and is very similar to iconic IKEA one, so save yourself to trip to IKEA if you're looking to get big reusable bags. I usually use the big reusable bags when doing laundry or grocery shopping. Customer Service: The staff are usually friendly. In my most recent visit, I was greeted when I walked through the door which was nice. Merchandise: This Harbor Freight location has some decent inventory. Most times when me & my boyfriend come, almost every visit, he buys something for his job. Bathroom: The bathrooms are located towards the far right corner of the store. The bathroom is usually clean at least all the times I've gone. Overall Experience: Overall, I have a good shopping experience at Harbor Freight at the Burbank location.
