I engaged Hydro-Tech to install an irrigation system in my property @ 5 years ago, @ one year after I moved to DC; the only reason I chose Hydro-Tech was that it was the same company which my little "pool/tennis club" used. (I didn't know any better to shop-around.)
To say that Hydro-Tech's service is rip-off priced, unreliable and rude would be an understatement (suffice it to say the "service manager," Michael Dawson, makes Donald Trump look polite).
This spring (after having pre-paid last year) to activate my system, the tech who came out said he couldn't activate my system because the "back-flow" apparatus was leaking, and there was a break in the electrical connection between the control panel and one of the zones; he said he couldn't fix either, and that he had to leave my home to proceed to his next job. When I, incredulous, asked him what I should do to get my system working, he just shrugged and said "I guess you'll have to make another appointment," and when I got angry, he got his boss (Michael Dawson) on his cell phone, who proceeded to shout abusive accusations at me. It was truly the most bizarre conversation with a "service provider" I have had in my 66 years of life.
I then called the Hydro-Tech office, and spoke to "Debbie," not realizing that she was Mike's wife, and told her my story. Debbie apologized for Mike, but said he was "sick," having just come out of the hospital. Debbie said my job was very complicated and would take several hours to fix, and gave me an appointment on the "earliest-available" date (9 days later) to have "their best tech" come out and fix the problems; in the meantime, I was forced to hand-water my garden as best I could.
On the appointed day, I left my volunteer job early to be home when Hydro-Tech was scheduled to arrive, but the time tick-tocked. I tried to call Debbie, but only got her voice mail...eventually reached other 2 other reps who told me that Debbie wasn't in that day because her dog had died, but assured me the tech "would be there soon." 3 hours later, I finally reached someone who told me the top-tech was sick that day, and they would send someone else.
Sure enough, a nice young man appeared minutes later and replaced the defective back-flow gizmo...but said he was not qualified to fix the electrical-connection problem, which was "a big job." He then presented us with an invoice for the $450 cost of the new back-flow gizmo, plus $100 for his service call (and we still didn't have a functioning system). My husband refused to pay until we had a functioning system, writing a note on the proffered invoice to that effect.
Hydro-Tech responded by sending the high-tech crew out 3 days later, who fixed the alleged "big job" electrical problem in less than 30 minutes, while tweaking a couple minor problems neither of the previous techs had noticed...and then presented us with a bill for $150 for yet ANOTHER service call (plus parts).
My husband told the very belligerent Michael Dawson that he would pay for the parts and for the "top-tech" service call, but not for the interim service call, and frankly, my husband was not happy with that either, We're in the market for a new vendor, as is my pool/tennis club, if anyone has suggestions,
Thanks,
