Independence Landscaping was contracted with VDOT for snow removal in the Lorfax neighborhood during the January 2026 snowstorm. Snow removal was difficult due to the amount of snow and the icing that followed combined with extreme cold. Lorfax streets provided additional challenges. I had the pleasure of meeting Eswin Yanes Perez who was working as a plow operator. Eswin, despite having worked long days under difficult conditions, committed to clearing Wells Road. Eswin took pride in his craft and cleared the road all the while taking care not to block in driveways! A fantastic job by Eswin, and Independence Landscaping. As a realtor in the area, I have opportunity to recommend companies to clients and often find myself in a position to recommend landscapers and similar professionals. If the entire company is as good as Eswin, Independence is on the top of my list! read more

1. When we started services this season (2024), your property was severely overgrown. While we respected your budget and time constraints, it wasn't possible to clean up and maintain everything as thoroughly as we'd prefer. We discussed this reality and agreed to a scope of work that would deliver the best results within those limits - both for the initial clean-up and ongoing maintenance. Because of the lawn's condition, we intentionally put on the contract to allow 12-24 months for full results from our Lawn Care Program. Given the proper amount of time, we have full confidence in our program. Like you commented to clarify. Did not expect the full results of the lawn care program to be within the six months which we were with your company, only expected if charging for pruning or mowing that on days for three hours they come and and do the work. Cameras, like you said, cannot capture the quality of the work but can capture if the workers were there the days charged. If the workers do not show up do you still stand by the quality of not showing up? I did not complain about the quality of work, when it was done. But cameras do capture if someone is outside on the days the bill said they should have come. Or would that not show up on cameras? Guess motion sensors and infrared was not in the workers knowledge. Not parking in front of the house was not the issue but being here doing the work that we were being charged was the reason for the post., So getting close to $11000 for six months not doing any work. was not good for us but great for your workers since the company got paid anyways. Andrew reached out and said he would come out with the crew and like your response, a month went by almost' maybe two or three weeks, so when I did not see him or get a call from him, I posted the post, after receiving another bill for work not done in the last month for $1300, I posted this review and cancelled the service Longevity and trust will keep with your longtime customers most likely but hopefully you keep your trust and longevity with the new customers by not picking and choosing which ones you have to take care of with the actual work you promise to do. Like I said to anyone one here do not trust my review or the response but go to your own cameras and look for yourselves if the workers are coming the number of days and hours you are being charged for. Through several years I noticed my lawn deteriorating with increased weeds and dying grass. So far this year all I can say is Independence Landscape has made a huge improvement. Ben, Connor, and the entire Independence Landscape Team are absolute masters at their craft and some of the most professional, responsive individuals I've ever worked on a project with. The job included designing/redoing our frontyard bed, installing downspouts, building a 330 square foot backyard patio bordered by a dry creek, installing natural stone steps leading up to the patio, and designing/executing new backyard landscape beds. Our backyard - which is on a slope and not a huge space to begin with - looks out onto a shared driveway. Given that, my wife and I struggled with how to create a sense of privacy in our backyard without having a fence installed. Of all the professionals we met with initially, Ben, our Project Manager and Connor, who did a lot of the design work, had the clearest vision of how to get it done. Both were mindful and in tune with what was important to my wife and I. Both were creative in working within the parameters of our space to deliver what is in my opinion, the very best job that anyone could have done. We've had a great experience with Independence so far, and I've never even had any face-to-face interaction with them! One of the staff members came to check out our home and was able to provide us with a quote as well as recommended lawn treatments since we had new sod laid out from the builders. Our lawn is mowed and treated while we're at work on a bi-weekly basis. Their prices are also fair compared to other companies that I looked at that service our area. Additionally, the front office charges us once a month for services and provides with an invoice through email for our credit card prior to charging. I must say at the outset that I do VERY few of these reviews. I may have done three in the past 10 years, but that could be an exaggeration. I must also say that I have VERY high standards for excellence. (See also above for cause and effect.) I am doing one at this time for Independence Landscape and Lawn Care because they recently exceeded my expectations. I started using them years ago to take care of my lawn, and progressed to having them do pest and disease management for all of my trees and shrubbery. More recently, I had them do a spring face lift of my yards, front and back. Before their work, neither was visible thanks to the weeds, vines, fallen leaves, and miscellaneous invasive who-knows-what that had found a home in the landscaping rocks. The backyard now looks as if it had been newly landscaped, and the front is so beautiful no one any longer thinks the property has been abandoned. It's also important to note that Independence Landscape is exceptionally knowledgeable, professional, and responsive. Whether I am requesting a quote for new work or simply have a question, my rep Brandon always returns my call quickly. For all of the above reasons, I am giving them a 5-star rating. We have been a year round customer of their weed and feed service for a year or more when last year we added aeration and seed. Not cheap. They do not tell u when they are coming for any service and this service was no different. They appeared in August in the heat to seed. We complained. They told us we had a sprinkler system so that is why we can plant earlier than fall. Turned out to be awful and they reseeded. This year we preempted and said don't come until late Sept or October. They agreed and 3 days later we catch them in our yard aerating and seeding. We told them that they shouldn't burden us with extra cost of running our sprinkler so they can come in August and fit their other customers in the fall. They said they would come out and look to reseed but now they refuse to do it and our yard has never looked worst. They came and looked and blamed it on our lawnmower. They have lost our business because we want a lawn service on our schedule. read more

I have been using Independence for about 5 years, and can't speak highly enough of them. They brought my patchy, dead lawn back to life after I bought the house, and have kept it lush, healthy, and weed free since day 1. There's actually a stark line between my lawn & my neighbor's, so you can tell their products & expertise is working. I have had several neighbors with lawn envy ask who I use, and come on board as clients. I used them very recently for a large landscaping project, and couldn't be happier with the work. I was kept informed, the work was done to a high standard, and the materials used were of high quality. The drainage system is top notch and working well, and the retaining wall is very solid. The crews that worked on the job were polite, and cleaned up after each day. Chad is an amazing guy, I can't recommend him highly enough. It's so obvious that he takes personal pride in the job he and his guys do; he's got skin in this game. He is always prompt to answer my questions & requests, explains things clearly, and went above & beyond by working directly with my HoA to get the landscape plans approved. He's never tried to upsell me, and I think I've been treated nothing but fairly by him and this business. The front office ladies are wonderful. They also answer questions & concerns quickly, and are always professional and cheerful. Having them call ahead so I know when to make sure the landscapers can get in is clutch, and it helps that they have an online billing and payment system. And have been very impressed with the responsive customer service received from my Account Manager, Kyle Bernstein. This was my first experience with a landscaping company and I'm quite pleased with the results. Independence installed sod in my small (under 300 square feet) back yard, and mulched some designated areas in the front. The crew worked diligently for several hours and the back is transformed from scruffy weed growth and bare dirt to a lush green carpet. Meanwhile, the areas in front are now ready for planting and other lawn decor. My point of contact, Jon, negotiated scheduling the work around several days of bad weather and had the sod installed the same day the company received it. Ben Rupert was instrumental in providing a landscape plan in several areas in my yard that sorely needed attention. In the back yard, a tree that had been there for over 30 years had to be removed, and it left a desolate area. The large electrical box in front of this area was even more apparent without the tree. When entering the yard from the gate, there was nothing that was welcoming. Ben came up with a plan, and his team implemented it beautifully. There were other areas in the yard that also needed attention, and with Ben's help, each were improved more than I could have ever imagined. His team removed my existing paver walkway from the extension of the driveway, hauled away the debris, extended and buried the below grade downspout into the back of the property and installed concrete sand to level and finished the back walkway with Techo-Bloc Eva Pavers. He installed River Jack Stone so that the water from the downspout would help alleviate drainage issues. He created a landscape bed and installed a Forest Pansy Redbud tree and decorative grass around the electrical box. Ben also improved other landscape beds and installed Techo-Bloc Edge Stone around them. The beds were cleaned, and mulch was installed. And finally, in the front of the house Ben's team removed the old Azalea bushes, installed new soil, and installed Camellia bushes and mulch to finish it. So, earlier this year we signed up for weekly mowings with Independence . Chad was extremely attentive to our special requests to not cut when the grass is wet, to cut to a height of no less than 3" and to blow 3 certain hardscape areas that affect drainage. Their service and quality of work has been outstanding. Their business model is to have an account manager (Brandon) who takes overall customer service responsibility no matter what services are involved; to us this consistent quality control and personal engagement is very valuable and enjoyable. He then brings in the key staff (Mark and Connor, hardscaping and landscaping design respectively) (Pablo, Jose and Francisco and their crews, hardscaping, landscaping and lawn service respectively). Among other things, this involved integrating new rock features and plants into a relatively mature setting; the work was beautiful and seamless and absolutely no damage to the grass and landscaped areas they had to work across. I am really surprised at the 1 star ratings that Independence Landscape & Lawn have received on Yelp! I contacted Independence based on the very positive reviews they have on another review site. Mark made an appointment to come out and take a look at the lawn and our drainage problems so that he could provide an estimate. He was prompt, courteous, and very patient with me. He explained each step and set my expectations for the job. The job was completed in a timely manner, the work crew was also extremely courteous and prompt. I cancelled my service after they charged me for coming out three times in November, the last of which they just blew leaves into the corners of my yard. We have a small yard and I decided I no longer wanted to pay $45 for them to come into the yard for 10 minutes with the weed whacker. Customer service is friendly but they didn't seem interested in keeping me as a customer when I asked about the blowing leaves and told them I only noticed they came twice in November. Time to find a less expensive and more accommodating company. read more

No follow through. I made an appointment with them to discuss drainage issues on my 1/3 acre property and a design plan. I give them one star for showing up on time. Throughout, the guy who came out kept commenting on it being a big job. When I asked about an actual landscape design, it was clear he didn't have the interest or perhaps the credentials. He took my email address and said he would take measurements of the yard space and email me. It was the oddest interaction. He got in his truck and left. I haven't heard anything. I can only conclude that this company might be good to use for mulching and mowing, refresh some pavers, but I wouldn't trust them for anything more complicated. I wouldn't recommend them. It was a waste of my time. 18 Dec 14: It is now more than seven months after my appointment and request for an estimate from this company and they have finally contacted me. The contact is in response to my review on yelp and they provide a half hearted and passive aggressive apology and still no estimate. This company is very responsive. The quick quote I received was reasonable. Jimmy provided outstanding recommendations to get the look I wanted to achieve within my budget. Then we found independence landscape and lawn care. I never have to call up and ask them why they didn't show up and when are they going to show up. I've been through many lawn care companies in the area, usually each one lasts about a season and then starts to disappoint with lackluster customer service which leads to a lot of weeds and a hideous yard. These guys are the only company I've kept for a second year. My lawn has never looked better and everyone in the neighborhood comments it's the best looking place on the block. The grass is the first thing you see when you pull up to a house- are they more expensive than other companies, yes. But, they provide more services throughout the year, and if you want your grass to stay looking great it's definitely worth it. Just had Curt Greene at my house and hoo-boy! This guy was like talking to your teenage son, not the owner of a business. He was defensive and diffident and told me my trees had been "hacked" (which is true and why I set up the appointment with him). It was clear that Curt was intimidated by the situation and perhaps knew they didn't have the chops to handle this yard. If you don't mind having to treat your landscaper like a fragile orchid and you don't have any tree problems that need an experienced and knowledgeable expert managing them then I guess this could be your company.
