I wouldn't use this company again for the following reasons: I was told at my first meeting in my home with the Vice President following an inspection that the job would take two days. Later, I learned from a scheduler that it would take 3 days. It actually took 4 full days. Next, the Vice President called and asked me, the payer, to drive across town to the HWC facility on the south side and bring him, the payee, a sample sheet of the tiles that would be used on my backsplash so he could determine which grout would be best to use. I grudgingly told him I would be 2 miles from his store on Plainfield the next day and would leave them there. I subsequently received a call from a female employee saying the tiles needed to be brought to the Porter store, 9.5 miles away, because there would be no one available to take them at the Plainfield location. The Plainfield store was, in fact, open, but I drove to the Porter location and had to contend with a street closing and then detour around a traffic accident. On the day the tradesperson arrived at my home to begin the work he took out a hand-held tray of grout samples and had been told to have me choose which one I wanted! I paid for and provided construction booties that I asked all the trades people to use when walking on the laminate floor or, especially, my beige carpeting if they chose not to take off their boots. I ended up disposing of 47 unused pairs of booties. Those that were used were only worn once or twice inside and then outside the house! On the first day tarps, which were provided by HWC and were filthy with dirt and paint chips were placed on the floor "for protection." On the second and following days I provided tarps of my own and had a worker remove theirs. After the last worker left I spent over 4 hours cleaning my tiny kitchen and removing scuff marks from my laminate floor. The faucet that was installed leaked the first time I used it, so the next day I sent HWC an email including a photo to find out about their warranty. I spoke to the Operations Manager and was told, "There is a 12 month warranty, however there should be no leak so I will forward this to production so we can get that taken care of quickly. Someone should be reaching out to you soon." 4 hours later I received an email from the Vice President asking if it was a new faucet, which it is, or used that his plumber installed. His response was, "Looking at the photos you provided it looks like the faucet itself is leaking, not the connections made by our plumber. If it is a new faucet I'm sure the manufacturer will warranty it, but typically not the charge for the plumber to install the new one. If it is your used faucet, that would be your responsibility. Either way you would be responsible for the plumbing service call. Let me know how I can help." How can you help, REALLY! The guy isn't even a licensed plumber and made his determination from a photo! As a show of good will on the day after the job was concluded he could at least have had his plumber check it in person. This is an HWC warranty? I'd been sitting on an estimate for patio doors and kitchen windows from another company, because I wanted to gauge the quality of HWC's work. I would never use HWC again. read more

Please don't give them any more business. They are over one year late in finishing a large project. The headaches can't be listed in this space. Don't show up when they say they will. Forget things we picked out and would substitute without checking. Nice people, but it has been pure hell. Didn't order things when they should have, told them a brand of paint I wanted to use, they substitued a different brand I specifically told them NOT to use. Put up the wrong color siding and them we had to wait for the right color. I have it. I need them done and out of our home. We are not close to the end. I will keep you posted. read more

HWC replaced our kitchen cabinet doors. No soft touch feature included. Thin, loudly banging cabinet doors. Terrible flimsy quality. Thin film of white paint straight on top of Plywood. We are ready to replace after 2 years and $ 5,500 cost as the paint chipped off and even blue "dish detergent" stains. So disappointed. read more

HWC has been an absolute nightmare. 10 months on a kitchen remodel and it's still not right. I have been home for the whole process and the contractors don't ask enough of my opinion. They do what they want and then you have 'discover' the slop work. Measurements off, half the cabinets had to be reordered. Don't want to pull permits. Don't communicate or write anything down. Absolute frustration for the homeowner. No one's driving the bus. Makes the homeowner feel like an idiot for having questions about process and wanting to know what's going on. Passive about the homeowners concerns. They constantly use the excuse they've been in business for 37 years... yeah, because it takes them a full year to get a 2 month job done. Don't waste your money here. They are all talk and no action. From what I hear they seem to have a large turn over - can't keep contractors. If they trained and invested in people and paid them outright instead of hiring contractors that would probably improve work moral. Heard there's management issues. I think they are sinking faster than the titanic. read more

We have just finished our third major remodeling (down to the studs) project with HWC, two different bathroom projects and a full kitchen remodel. We initially engaged them on the advice of friends and could not be happier. Their design team helped us find furnishings, fixtures, and flooring that matched our taste, budget and design intentions. Their employees and sub-contractors (electrical, plumbing) were top-notch. They were excellent craftsmen and attentive to every detail. They stayed on the project until every detail and item met all of our expectations. They were even meticulous about cleaning up everyday and communications with the office team and the on-site work team was excellent -- the kitchen lead would even text me when I was out of town for work to keep me informed and answer any questions. All in all, HWC is a GREAT team to work with. read more

My husband and I were interested in this company based on all of the positive reviews we saw from Angie's list. I have to say I am actually very surprised and disappointed that we will have to be one of the first customers to write a negative review. I contacted HWC in September and had Mark come out to look at our home on September 17. He seemed very professional and interested in the project which included a new drop ceiling in our basement some drywall repair and gutters. We discussed what we would need in order to come up with the quote. We also discussed having it done before the holidays as I will be going back to nursing school in January. I emailed Mark the information we received from her insurance company on September 22 in order to get things started and have our quote completed. Then we waited. Finally on October 1 Mark emailed and apologized for the delay. He assured us it would be in before the end of the week. We had not heard anything by October 6 so I emailed him once again asking if there was anything he needed on our end. October 7 Mark replied and stated he should have it wrapped up by that afternoon. However we did not receive the quote. By this time I had also called the office in order to see if there was anything else we could do. We are assured that he knew about it and that he would get back with us shortly. On October 15 I sent him another email asking if perhaps the quote had been mailed as we had not received anything. Around this time I also contacted the manager concerned that we were falling behind and may not get the project done in time. John Crawford also assured us that mark would get back to us. Finally on October 20 I sent Mark an email just asking him to let us know if he was just too busy to take on the project and that we would really just appreciate his honesty. He responded on October 23 and indicated this was the case. He also apologized which we appreciated. My husband I were disappointed that we spent so much time and energy and feel like we lost a month just trying to connect and get our project started. Hopefully this is not the case for other couples in the future. read more

HWC Home Works is not a company you want to deal with. They can not be trusted to do the job promised. We had contracted with them for a kitchen remodel. We decided to give ourselves and them 4 months lead time. We needed to get a plan, decide materials, order materials etc. We wanted this project completed while the kids were off school. When we began meeting, we gave them a budget of what we had to spend, took two years to save. We started discussing our plans-likes/dislikes etc. This went on for 1 1/2 months. We get to the final stages of choosing cabinets, counter tops etc. We have an appointment in their showroom on Porter St. The night before the meeting I get an email with the final cost estimates for our remodel. He is nearly double what our budget is and had not included flooring, painting or any new appliances. I thought there must be some mistake. Surely, he would not have had us put this much time into it, only to drop a bomb. When we went to the appointment to discuss the matter, our representative said sorry I've been really busy. We have had a lot of business lately and some staffing concerns. I thought he was kidding. We were suppose to be setting the start time. He wasted all our time by not being prepared, not having follow-thru, and not being honest up front with what charges would be. What a frustrating experience. Now we get to start all over. read more
