It's the only place my mom approves of lol My favorite dishes from here so far: - Seafood Japanese tofu (I love the amount of seafood and veggies, and of course gelatinous sauce) - fried intestine (if you like crispy fatty things.. you gotta try it!) Really any dish is good. Some notes: I didnt love their spicy boiled fish, and definitely not their scallion pancake (it was so oily and sad the one time we got it). Duck was okay, fried noodles was a little too oily for me. However, the flavors are always good and my mom always thinks the quality of everything is great. Hu's cooking is my favorite place to eat in Houston. I've been here too many times to count and have invited almost all of my friends to try this place. The service is amazing and the food comes out usually within 10 minutes of ordering. The ambience is nice. It's always crowded with people lined out the door in evenings. Located near Rice university, Hu's cooking is probably the most authentic Sichuan food in the loop in my opinion. Parking is limited. The restaurant has a few parking spots in the front and a small parking lot in the back which is normally pretty packed. We dined in and ordered to-go couple times. The to-go orders are packaged well. Our favorites and must haves are the Kung Pao chicken and eggplants in garlic sauce and spicy chicken. However, during our most recent visit, the Spicy chicken had more onions than chicken cubes, came out less crispy and had less flavors than before. Hopefully it's just a one time flop. By all accounts, Hu's is doing everything right. They've become one of the city's most well reviewed and popular Chinese restaurants, which is nothing less than impressive after only debuting a short 4 years ago. As the explosion of Sichuan cuisine continues to permeate the Chinese dining scene, they're certainly among those leading the charge. As this side of Holcombe continues to gain traction amongst the Chinese community, Hu's has its hands full with a number of similar restaurants competing in the same vicinity. Even though the parking is narrow and tough, they still continue to have heaps of people night in and out. The food is definitely on the pricier side, as most entrees are hovering just below or over the $20 mark, but the good news is that most everything is authentic and relatively good. I think some of their dishes are a tad sweeter than I'm used to, but it's an ideal place for family style food and an even more ideal destination for folks who don't feel like heading to Bellaire Chinatown. Their eggplant with pork (魚香茄子) is sweet but good and the cumin lamb (自然羊肉) definitely packs some heat. The classic spicy chicken (宮保雞丁) is not for the faint of heart, dan dan noodles (擔擔麵) is a good addition to any meal. Their mala dry pot is definitely numbing and the mapo tofu (麻婆豆腐) is well executed. Stick with Sichuan dishes and all should be good. Their shaomai and other dim sum like options are laughable, but it's mainly tailored for the gringo crowd. Their tea duck is solid, but a little overrated. The fried noodles (炒麵) are just so-so at best. If seafood is an absolute must, I would only recommend the fried cumin fish filets (自然魚片) or their poached fish in oil (水煮魚). If not pork, then certainly go with anything lamb. The interior hs a modern feel and there's plenty of staff to help whenever things get busy. They recently started serving food till 11pm on the weekends, which puts them closer to a late night food destination. They have a dedicated takeout window and accept credit cards. read more

Comfort Chinese food at its finest for the TMC area! We stumbled on this place after deciding we needed piping hot veggies and meats after a long day at the hospital. Service and seating is quick (if you avoid rush hours). Go to menu items are the beef tenderloin and soft tofu (chefs special) with no peppercorns, and some sort of veggie dish. We LOVE the stir fried pea shoots with garlic. Pea shoots stay vibrant and have a slight crunch! We've tried the stir fried string beans - also excellent! And the garlic eggplants - not too bad but too much sauce! House combination noodles are addictingly good! Surprisingly so! You really can't go wrong with all of the menu items here, and that is the true beauty of this place. Ample portion sizes too, to share with larger groups of friends or family. I came here with my folks a year or two ago. Sadly, after having my braces installed and I was a little self conscious. The waiter cracked some jokes and made me loosen up a little bit and enjoy the meal. He also gave me some braces-friendly suggestions as to what to order. We got the 1/2 duck, spicy wontons, spicy chicken with rattan pepper, and veggie fried rice. Hands down it was delicious. When we went the place was packed, had to wait 20 min for a table. The ambiance was kind of upscale minimalism is the best way I can describe it. All tastefully decorated, but the crowded tables and hard chairs definitely don't invite you to linger or luxuriate. Acoustics weren't great either - hard to hold a private conversation even with all the noise. Overall, I would recommend this place. I absolutely love szechuan food, and I'm constantly looking for places like Tiger noodle and mala's. The food here is delicious and has all your typical dishes like peppercorn dishes, Dan Dan noodle, and beef noodle stew. Today, we went for 2 simple dishes: - chef's special beef tenderloin with soft tofu: has the peppercorn kick, but I loved it. Soft beef and tofu in a pool of yummy sauce. - flounder boiled fish in chili oil: so delicious! It's definitely an oily dish, but that's the point. I was craving some spice and oil! Both dishes are pretty pricy (little less than $20 but I like how this restaurant uses flounder. Most other restaurants use tilapia or catfish and I hate those 2 types of fish. I've always driven by this place but so lucky to have stumbled upon it when I was hungry late one night. I go to Mala Sichuan Bistro for Szechuan food a lot, but I was pleasantly surprised by Hu's Cooking. The storefront is very open with a lot of comfortable warm lighting. I loved that it was busy even on a weekday, but the service was still very quick. The customers were diverse from couples to large groups to families to coworkers. Their menu is large, and they have a lot of Chinese and Szechuan options. The portions and price are reasonable! - Cumin lamb: 4/5 could be spicier, but the celery is yummy, seasoning comes through, all complemented by cilantro stems. I always love cumin lamb lol this did not disappoint! - Twice cooked pork: 4.5/5 it's sweeter and milder than other places I've had but I actually really liked it, the texture on the pork belly is so good almost like jelly - Spicy crispy chicken: 4/5 I think this should def be spicier if you are claiming it to be spicy on the menu, but still solid, they give more chicken than other places, the light crisp is perfect, and the onions were cooked just right Overall, I would definitely return, especially with a friend group or family. My coworkers and I ordered off of the lunch menu one day so this is only my experienced with the to go food. Lunch menu was decent and included a variety of choices and dishes with different proteins such as beef, chicken, and shrimp. Usually lunch menus don't include a lot of seafood choices but this one had a variety of shrimp dishes. Each dish came with a side of vegetable egg roll and choice of soup. I got the Mongolian Beef with the Hot and Sour soup and egg roll. The portion was fairly generous as there was plenty of rice and soup and it included a side of bok choi. However, the dish was overly salty and had way too much onions. It's also on the more expensive side for lunch portions. The delivery was via a third party vendor so there was no issue there. Went to Hu's cooking for lunch, the place was packed. They have a lot of lunch special deals. Dish comes with egg rolls, hot and sour soup, and bok choy, all for $13.50. Got the spicy pickled pepper chicken! Loved the flavor, portion size was huge too. They have a parking lot in the back too. Service was very quick. Everything was super delicious but the Beef Flank Noodles was meh. It wasn't as flavorful as it looks and they use round spaghetti looking noodles. I wish it was more flat noodles.. BUT every other dish was amazing!! HEADS UP! very very very very limited parking! They do have some parking in the back but it was all taken when I went. There's parking in the neighborhood behind the restaurant but I'm not sure how reliable it is. This place is definitely worth the hassle of finding parking though. I highly recommend you coming. Finally went to this Houston staple and I see why it's a popular spot! It was packed on a Tuesday night and rightfully so. Just good food. Large portions. The pork in chili oil is enough for 2-3 people to share. It's huge. I tried to show my hand in the pic to give an idea of the large sized bowl but it doesn't do it justice. It was good too! Large slices of pork and many vegetables. It wasn't spicy so I did add chili to it. The chili oil also isn't heavy so that was nice. The pea shoots either garlic was excellent-very tender but still crispy. The chicken dish was also good. Staff was busy so we did have to flag down a waiter to get our order taken, but food came out fast and staff was nice. It's nice on the inside. No problems there. This is a family owned business (Mr. Hu was even walking around and serving folks!) with delectable Sichuanese food and tables complete with lazy Susans for family-style eating. My favorite dishes at Hu's were the green beans and fried chicken with red peppers. Thanks to the use of Sichuan peppercorn, some of the dishes have a delightful numbing yet floral and addictive spiciness. Go to order: hot boiled fish - 5/5, loads of numbing spice which i love mapo tofu - 4.5/5 mr and mrs smith - 4.5/5, beef tripe with numbing spice, love the sauce with rice I've also tried the fried intestine which is great when it's fresh fried, green beans, and lamb. The customers were really quite diverse in there. Snow Pea Leaves - perfectly cooked, just enough crisp in the stems without it being hard, and leaves still retaining the green color. The first half was great, but towards the end, it was slightly too salty, but still tasty when eaten with rice. They could tone back on the salt a little overall. Salt and Pepper Shrimp - Excellent dish, the shrimp were larger sized than any I've ever seen in this type of dish. Onions and peppers were cooked well. I devoured this dish completely. Shrimp Shumai - I had a shrimp shumai and thought it was good as expected. It came with a large portion of soy sauce and chili oil. My mom bought some chili oil to-go because she liked it so much.
