The reviews say it all. This place is excellent value and I would bypass bustling St Kilda Central to have breakfast here on a Saturday morning. Right opposite the Slater St tram stop, Hunters has a great outdoors area and a cosy indoors. The underwhelming sign out the front and the lack of obvious action from the street belie the great menu and great coffee.
The first thing to please is the staff welcome from Charlotte, attentive and enthusiastic, knowledge of menu, water on the table and coffee orders taken in a flash. Then we were left for just the right amount of time before ordering. Spookily good! My coffee was strong flavoured long black but a good bean (Campos) well served with no bitterness, just full flavours. I see they offer a single origin as well which I may try next time.
I ordered the breakfast taco, a soft bread with corn, chorizo, tomato salsa and scrambled egg with a hit if jalapeño. Great simple flavours and very satisfying at $12.50. The menu has a good range and some interesting options. We liked the sound of the mini crab and dill bagel at $15 and the smoked salmon crumpets. There's also The Melbournian for those young wanna be home buyers spending their hard earned cash on breakfast - a very reasonably priced ($15.50) avo and feta on sourdough. If you like sugar Dr Marty's Crumpets for $8.50 will smooth you out for the day, toasted with Nutella, berry compote, vanilla cream and hazelnut brittle!
I think this place rocks at night, probably a lot of good looking youth having a beer or cocktails. For breakfast and brunch it's a great choice and deserves far more attention. Darn! Why am I telling you this? I kinda liked having the place to myself. read more
