This is the kind of place you can take just about anyone, for any purpose. Catch up champagne and oysters with the girls - TICK. Business dinner over Nebbiolo and Steak Tartare? - TICK. Relaxed multi course meal with Mum - TICK. Hot date cocktails and dessert - TICK. This is a great venue with a menu that has one foot in Europe and the other in... Thailand. The menu is diverse - and were it not for Adam D'Sylva overseeing a tight kitchen brigade, it could feel a little confusing lurching from crab and pommello betel leaf to salami and smoked mozzarella. Somehow it all works. Travis Howe, the unassuming Sommelier is an expert navigator of his wonderful list that includes half bottles and interesting drops by the glass. He's even great at suggesting a cocktail - a recent visit saw me sampling a Hendrick's Martini with a Pastis rinse. Delicious. The reasonable prices (for this kind of experience and quality of food) will mean you soon forget that your clothes have the scent of cooking fumes once you leave. The open kitchen is renowned for having occasional exhaust issues, but this is the consequence of providing diners with an experience that lets them watch all the action in the kitchen. I let this slide because I'm never disappointed with the food, wine and service that I receive at Coda. Call it a multi-sensory experience with an interactive take-home component.

Wow! Just wow. Ended up here because Chin Chin had an outrageously long line outside, waiting in Antarctic temperatures. I'm not even sure where to start. We sat at the bar which is always fun and the staff service is great. My favourite savoury dish was the crispy ha noi rice paper roll - it's lightly fried on the outside which creates that beautiful glutinous sticky texture. I also loved loved loved the blackened quail and the duck curry. I thought the meal couldn't get any better but then the chocolate dessert came out. Beautifully presented - the photo says it all! Tasted even better than it looks!

For me there is a lot to love about Coda - it's basement location, the ambient dining room, the service and of course the food. Our most recent visit was to celebrate and kick off a holiday and Coda ensured that our holiday started with a bang! We had Crispy Hà Nôi style rice paper rolls, Hervey Bay scallop, pearl tapioca and Yarra Valley salmon caviar, Sizzling plate of prawns and pixian chilli sauce, king brown mushrooms and chestnut s and Heart of palm, honeydew melon, mint and cucumber salad . Each dish was fresh and full of vibrant delicious flavors.

OK, Melbourne has officially gone Tapas crazy. But that isn't a bad thing. At least not when the variety and quality of these sometimes pint sized dishes is exciting and new (just like the The Love Boat). Coda's offering is exactly that. No, not The Love Boat (what a crazy idea for a show by the way), but fresh, exciting and new. The menu is Asian fusion style and be assured, as a fellow dining companion aptly pointed out, every dish doesn't taste of lime. Far from it! The menu boasts a wide variety of flavours. I particularly liked the Morton Bay Bug Tempura and Roy Choi's Kim Chi salad. The Hervey Bay scallops and yellow fin tuna and green apple salad were real treats too. Coda also has a comprehensive wine list. I tried a French Pinot and was not disappointed. Although, be warned, Coda isn't the most flexible with coffee. So if you are after a low fat, soy, chai, decafe infused latte this isn't the place. I don't like being told how to take my lactose but there is always Gloria Jeans. An excellent dining experience. Definitely one for the list!!

Nom nom nom, squeezed us in when they were full, great service, yum food Try the betel leaf, the lemongrass flavour pushes out onto your tongue leaving you wanting another half a dozen. The oysters with bubbles glid down our throats effortlessly. Went with the recommended dishes and weren't disappointed. If I lived in Melbourne, this would be a regular haunt

4 stars for food, 5 for service and ambiance. Walked into Coda randomly and was pleasantly surprised by a fantastic meal and super friendly staff. They helped us navigate the menu and served it in a recommended and complimentary sequence. Would love to go back to try more dishes tho, so good! Highly recommend and in a really great location. Try: wagyu brisket, scallops, prawn/betel leafs, steak tartare, mozzarella/squash flowers/pea and mint salad. Yum!

I had lunch here and thought the quality of the food was excellent. I loved the Asian fusion / Vietnamese food and thought everything was well-prepared. There were some dishes that I loved more than others, and I thought it was a bit on the expensive side, especially for certain dishes. If you're able to expense your meal or taking clients out to lunch, then this is a great place. I did like that everything was tapas style, and I was able to share everything with my coworker. Soft Rice Paper rolled with Crystal Bay Prawns, Pork and Hoisin Sauce ($11 each) - This is a fresh spring roll (not deep fried) with shrimp, vermicelli noodles, pork, mint, and served with 2 different dipping sauces. To be honest, I come from SF where there is tons of inexpensive Asian food, and a spring roll like this would be about $2.50 - $3 USD, not 4 times this price. It was good, but definitely way too expensive for what it was. Hervey Bay Scallop, Pearl Tapioca & Yarra Valley Salmon Caviar ($7.80 each) - That's Amore Buffalo Mozzarella, Zucchini Fritters, Mint and Pea Salad ($22) - The full portion comes with 4 zucchini fritters - our server was nice enough to do a half portion for the two of us. This was delicious - the zucchini fritters were like croquettes and just melted in your mouth, and the mozzarella was fresh. I don't normally like peas unless they are fresh and al dente, and this was great. Would highly recommend this dish. Seared Yellow Fin Tuna, Green Apple Salad with Pinenuts ($24) - The tuna was seared perfectly and wrapped with seaweed for a sushi like experience sans rice. There were about 8 slices of tuna, so you're paying about $3 for each slice which is a bit on the expensive side. I didn't care for the salad - I think it had radishes in it, which I don't like, it was too bitter for my taste. Fish of the Day - Fresh barramundi, this was delicious - you can't go wrong with a simple, grilled fish. Wok Fried Bok Choy ($8) - If you like the wok-seared taste of Pad See Ew (Thai noodle dish), then you'll like the taste of this bok choy. A flavorful way to get your greens in. Flourless Chocolate Cake, Dulce de Leche, Aerated Chocolate ($18) - This was a delicious end to our meal with chocolate of all different textures. There were tiny bits of flourless chocolate cake, and my favorite was the aerated chocolate - almost like a solidified, yet airy, piece of mousse. My favorite dishes were the scallop, fish of the day, bok choy, and dessert. Some of the other dishes were too expensive for what you got. I'd definitely come back for more. Make a reservation (even for lunch, or you'll be eating at the bar) and be prepared to spend at least $40-50 per person for lunch.

Coda easily makes my top 5 restaurants in Melbourne. I once had to cancel a booking there that I'd made several months in advance. I had the worst flu but the prospect of cancelling a dinner at Coda seemed far worse. Let me explain. Coda specializes in Vietnamese and French fusion food. Think spicy and sweet Sugar Cane Prawns, Roasted Yellow Duck Curry and Quail lettuce delight. Then sample the richness of steak tartare, duck liver parfait and soufflés. Welcome to heaven. Coda's menu is flexible. Small samples of the menu start around $6 for a serve. Medium sized plates will hit the $15 -$24 mark and the biggest dishes will range above $35. If you want to book a table then make sure you get in fast (weeks in advanced fast) or just take a chance and sit up at the bar and watch the bar staff work their magic. The service is brilliant: helpful but not overbearing. The bathrooms are a little hard to locate at first but once you've found the side door and flight of stairs your laughing, and the setting is wonderful. Think sleek black tables and bar with bright lights covered in fishing nets. Coda is truly a restaurant Melbourne should be proud of. With interesting and exciting dishes and impeccable service it hits the spot without fail.

Tucked down an alley near Flinders Street Station, those unknowing my be surprised to see such well dressed lads and ladies disappearing of the main street into the murky depths of street art and rubbish. Inside is a very different picture. Submerging into the ground is Coda, the stuff restaurant dreams are made of. Writers and eaters alike mention the magic that occurs in here. The food is diverse and of a high quality. Is it European, is it Thai? I can't tell. What I do know is that these oysters are to die for. Lots of tapas style eating made for sharing and loving together. Great place to take a special someone, no matter where you seat. My special one and I got a seat along the bar, and were treated to the master behind the bar who perfectly matched the wine to the food we were thinking. Even the beers are matched perfectly - with locals the Cricketers Arms available, a real winner here. Expect to pay for the experience, but it's more than likely one you will remember for all the right reasons.

Spanner crab, galangal, roasted chilli and lime betel leaf

There is certainly no shortage of Asian fusion restaurants in Melbourne and five year old Coda has been one of the most acclaimed. Hiding on a basement level on the corner of Flinders Lane and Oliver Lane, it offers a modern Vietnamese cuisine, with some French influences. Coda has an industrial yet minimalist fit out with it's dimmed lighting, from a mixture of exposed light bulbs and lights with mesh shades, and concrete walls providing an intimate dining affair. Seating is split on either side of the centrepiece bar. Although reservations are usually required, seating at the bar was available when I visited on a Saturday night. The food menu follows a tapas style with a mixture of mostly small share plates and selection of larger plates. Noticing that I was spending a little while trying to decide between the many choices, the bartender offered a selection of the popular dishes, which I opted for. This selection included a half serve of one of the large plates as I was dining solo. First up was the spanner crab with galangal (part of the ginger family) and roasted chilli perched on a lime betel leaf. This is one of a few dishes that are served individually and I ordered two. Juicy flavoursome crab meat with a gentle spice kick, a great starting dish. Next was two of the popular crispy Ha Noi style rice paper rolls filled with pork and taro with nuoc mam dipping sauce. There was a lettuce leaf on the side also with which you used to wrap the crispy roll and dip in the sauce. A nice sweet and sour flavour combination. The following dish was the steak tartare with quail egg, mustard cress and caper melba toasts. A gorgeous thick and creamy tartare with the nice added touch of the quail egg yolk. The final savoury dish was a half serving of the also popular roasted yellow duck curry with a side of jasmine rice and bok choy. An outstanding dish with the duck meat easily falling off the bone and the creamy curry provided a smooth but noticeable spice. The bok choy and rice offered a nice relief to the spice. Service was on point with the waitstaff explaining the components and cooking techniques of each dish as well as providing friendly banter throughout. After eating, I explored the vast wine list with a selection of the fortifieds, of which some I had not seen before. It is clear why head sommelier Travis Howe has been awarded the Good Food Guide Sommelier of the year in the past. Coda offered a wonderful dining experience with some high quality, creative dishes in an intimate but inviting and friendly setting.

Here's what we noticed: - It was difficult to get a reservation at prime dinner hour, so we opted for a 3:30 PM late lunch/early dinner which worked out perfectly for our schedule. - The place overall has a great vibe, good music, and it is pretty small. - There were some really interesting drinks and good wines to choose from...we went with wine since we had other plans later that evening. - We decided to start with the salad with pear and honey, and then my wife and I split both the black squid ink pasta, and the special pasta that had Moreton Bay Bugs. The salad was incredible perfectly dressed... Having it first gave us away as Americans for sure, but it was perfect. The squid ink pasta was every bit as good as everyone said in reviews, and so was the special pasta. - Service was great, not overbearing. They even brought us some extra bread so we could sop up the sauce from our pasta. Bottom line: There are so many great restaurants in Melbourne and Tipo 00 is right up there and should be on your "to try list".

I came here on New Years Day for dinner. The menu is 6 pages long, but there is a picture of every dish, which makes it really helpful to decide (I assume especially if you're not Korean). I kept it classic and went with the beef bibimbap, and boy am I glad I did! The only adjustment I made was no bean sprouts. Served in a sizzling hot stone bowl, you'll have to control yourself for a couple of minutes to let the rice continue to cook and get all crispy on the edges. The server was quite sweet and asked me if I knew how to eat it when she delivered the bowl. I sheepishly said, "um, mix it all together?" and she nodded in approval and skipped away. All of the ingredients and flavors blended together perfectly, aided by a generous helping of gochugang (sweet/spicy red sauce). I added a grapefruit soju to wash it down. Like many places, you'll self serve cutlery (chopsticks, spoons, napkins) as well as water from the counter. Someone takes your order either at the register or your table (didn't seem to be rhyme or reason to which or why), and then drops off your food when you're done. Space is tailored to groups of 2 or 4, though one group of about 6 or 7 kids came in together looking worse for wear after NYE. Prices are about $15 each for most entrees. The food was delicious (see photos) and I will be back!
