The Grain Store is such a cute cafe. When I arrived, I was expecting a wait since it was almost lunch time but we were seated right away. I went to this place for one thing: their ricotta pancakes. I was imagining ricotta pancakes like bills but they weren't like souffle pancakes. But still it was really good with tons of mascarpone cheese, mango sauce and an ice cream on the side. What I liked even better was their bagel with sunny side egg and bacon. Their bacon was not too crispy, just the way I like. The egg was perfectly cooked as well and went very well with avocado. Gorgeous space to have your breakfast in style! The Grain Store is a bustling brunch destination, located in the quieter corner of Melbourne business district. Although hidden in plain sight, the restaurant is easily accessible as they are situated just a couple blocks away from the Southern Cross Metro station. We walked in on a random Monday afternoon and first of all, I couldn't help but admire how elegant the interior is. The open space dominated by neutral color has managed to create such a calming vibe. Their brunch menu is available from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. and the options were impressive. But, if you prefer to have your food on the go, they also offered sandwiches and freshly baked good for sale near the front counter. My food of choice was the Potato gnocchi and zucchini pesto. It comes with orange squash, halloumi, tomato veloute and charred Brussel sprouts. The gnocchi was cooked beautifully; just properly chewy and altogether with the vegetables... It has such earthy and robust flavors, just a perfect dish for the season! I got the house fries with chipotle aioli as side, it was deliciously crunchy, salty and smoky! Full, but not extremely full, we just had to have their chocolate chip cookies and milk for desserts. The presentation was super simple, fun and it tasted absolutely divine. Overall, I had a great meal at The Grain Store. Beautiful space, delicious and slightly fancier modern Australian brunch experience, with prices that can be intimidating. It includes two poached eggs, spinach and really tasty potatoes. I also liked their hollandaise sauce. The pancakes on the other hand were good but nothing special. When I want to eat something sweet for dessert I tend to be biased towards heavy chocolate which might explain why I found the pancakes just ok. Nonetheless I recommend this restaurant for breakfast. Avoid. Melanie (owner / manager, is a nightmare). The single rudest experience i have ever experienced in 3+ decades of global travel. I'd suggest reading the other 1 star reviews which will substantiate my experience with her. Her contempt / rudeness doesn't deserve to be rewarded with business when so many other places are struggling to stay afloat. Went today (Saturday) at 8.30am with my girlfriend and her 71 year old mother. We were all excited, having read and heard so many good things about the Grain Store. As an elderly couple exited, the gentleman kindly held the door for us, i thanked him and held it open and we enter and are IMMEDIATELY shooed out by Melanie, who says "wait outside, i'll call you when we're ready" and closed the door. This hinted at what was to come and we all thought it odd, given the restaurant was only 1/4 to 1/3 full. Thinking it's possibly a system to keep numbers down with their COVID policies, we wait outside while 2-3 other groups / couples begin to line up behind us. After a few minutes I begin to wonder if she forgot about us. I pry the door and poke my head in where a waitress nearby turns and i simply ask "is it ok if we come in now or do stay out?" The waitress says "yes of course, come in". It was cold, and I thanked her, wondering why we were just left to wait. I look up and Melanie is casually leant on the counter, chatting at the counter to one of the other waitresses. Strange i thought, but maybe she was busy and we weren't waiting too long, and again we were just excited to now be inside out the cold, didn't pay it much attention. Melanie comes over and without any welcome, points to a table and simply says "ok, you can sit there". I see 2 empty bench-seat tables against the wall with cushions, and politely inquire if we may please take one on those and explain my girlfriend's mother has a bad back. Without any hesitation, Melanie says "No. Those tables are reserved for parties of 5" and repeats "i can only offer you that one" gesturing back to the same table. I say "ah ok, do you have any reservations as we'll be 15 mins, we just to grab coffee and a quick bite as we're off the to market" but before i can finish the sentence, she cuts me off at "..coffee" and with sarcasm in her voice says "oh i'm SO sorry, we don't allow people to sit if they just want coffee, you have to order takeaway". I say what i was trying to say, "we want coffee but we DO want some food, we're only going to be 15 minutes, it's just she has a bad back" and again she cuts me off, and flat out says no, you can only have that table, thats all. I can only describe her tone, language and expression as insanely belligerent and rude but in such an over the top way, i was totally shocked. In a majority empty establishment, i simply was trying to see if they could seat my girlfriend's mother in a slightly more comfortable space, all of which could have been solved with a "how about i grab a cushion for her?". Thinking maybe i was misjudging the situation, I looked at my girlfriend and mother and their own expressions conveyed the same reaction - shock/disbelief. I quickly asked if they wanted to go elsewhere and they agreed, and Melanie happily showed us the door. I have never experienced anything like it. The silver lining to the experience was that we left and had a (second) amazing experience at Roule Galette, a French-style creperie on Flinders Lane. The experience there was like night and day compared to Grain Store. I've been lucky to have travelled for over 3 decades, and at this point on this particular trip, I had been in Australia for 2 weeks. The customer service on this trip was exceptional, and it was so nice to frequent places in this more-or-less post-COVID era who you can tell are just so happy to have customers back and still being in business. The experience at the Grain Store stood out like a sore thumb in comparison, not just on this trip, but as one of the singularly worst experiences in over 30 years of independent global travel. For a light roasted coffee bean they do a good job of extracting the oils and giving this flat white balance and drinkability. Normally I find Melbourne trendy coffee too sour but this one hits the spot. Just falls short in richness, but that's just a bean selection thing imho. Friendly staff, clean communal table made of a lovely hardwood. Native flowers poking out of logs on the table makes for a warm and relaxing atmosphere and also helps absorb some of the chatter. There is limited outdoor seating but we were not offered that as an option. Started off with a phenomenal long black coffee - delicious, smooth roast. Going to brunch on grand final day means that you are seated within 20 minutes and are out of the door with meals eaten, coffees drunk, and bill paid within another 20 minutes. The waiting area is quite modern and plush with nice couches and round tables. It is quite small inside but the space has been wisely used. The freshly baked goods are in view and not in glass cabinets as you enjoy your cafe experience. The menu changes often but apparently the wild mushrooms with polenta croquette is a grain store staple. My friend had gotten the mushroom dish before and said that we must have it. She then couldnt take her eyes off the pork belly and even though it was a whopping 30 bucks she wouldn't budge. We got the two dishes to share and two cappuccinos. The cappuccinos were delicious and creamy. Not robust for those that like their coffee strong. The pork belly was crispy and oily and fried and after a few bites I felt like I had enough as I'm not a fried food person. It went well with the sliced apple and what looked like hommus but was a creamy sweet sauce (perhaps yoghurt). The wild mushrooms came on top of an orangey oily thick curry sauce which tasted very Indian. It is well spiced and went well with the mushrooms and something else that tasted like pulled pork (so so so good). The golden yolk from the poached egg with the fried mushrooms and the thick curry like sauce was too much for my tummy which felt quite unwell after as I felt like I had dropped a sack of stones in the pit of my belly. I feel that it needed to be balanced with another flavour (sweet perhaps) and should have been served with toast to mop up and absorb the thick sauce. Hooray, this place has finally won me over! After a pretty rubbish breakfast experience here and multiple so-so coffee pop-ins, I was determined to give this place another go and try it for lunch based on other rave reviews. It's not the cheapest place to go for lunch, with a meal setting you back around $20-$30, but it is really lovely food. I had the gnocchi with brussel sprouts, pumpkin and brown butter and it was so good. My Mum had a piled high pork belly sandwich, made GF for her coeliac needs without any hassle. The coffee isn't amazing, but the fresh squeezed OJ was perfectly tart and fluffy. A tad pricey at $7 but good. Ever had a cafe match your mood? No. Okay, well it happened this morning when in a somewhat fragile state of mind (two days working 10hrs straight and an impending cold) Grain Store's light-filled venue and simply elegant menu ever so gently woke me up ready for my day. I ordered the portobello mushroom with a raclette potato rosti with hazelnut hollandaise, a long black with hot milk on the side and a refreshing juice (homemade spirulina, pineapple, mint and pear). The hollandaise was without any reservation the best I have had. I usually don't order hollandaise because of it's heavy creaminess, but this, oh this was light, delicate and melded so well with the flavours of the mushrooms. Even my coffee, a St Ali blend, wasn't a strong, bold roast, but it did the trick to wake me up. The juice was just the icing on the cake to start my day. I'm only sorry I didn't order a baked to order cookie! read more

I am in love with this place. Just reading the menu makes me hungry. The grain store has been on my wish list for a while and finally got there for breakfast for the first time last weekend and it did not disappoint. Walking in I loved the feel of the place, it's warm and inviting and the light coloured furnishings help to keep the room looking bright. I love all the little touches rustic water jugs, small vases with flowers and the seedlings you can buy at the counter. Having to wait for a table wasn't a problem as we took in the surrounds and eyed off all the baked goods presented temptingly on the bench. The food was soo delicious that we ended up sharing all our dishes and ordering an extra one. I started off with the house made spirulina. I don't drink juice as a general rule but this was so tempting and it did not disappoint, the pear and mint are a delicious combination. What made the food soo amazing was the sauces and the extra little touches. We had the portobello mushrooms and raclette potatoe rosti hazelnut hollandaise. the hazelnut flavour added so much to this dish and really brought out the mushroom's flavour. We also had the house smoked salmon with asparagus with and blood orange the goats curd and crispy quinoa finished this dish off beautifully although I would have liked a little extra blood orange. We also had the buerre Bosc pear and Belgian chocolate brioche which was an individual brioche baked around a pear infused with spices. The walnut praline ricotta and honey were sensational but I felt like the brioche lacked chocolate and it was a little over crispy on the outside. My favourite dish had to be the apple buckwheat and ricotta pancakes. The pancakes were delicious and the orange Nutella, spiced mascarpone and pistachio added an extra layer that made yousavour every mouthful. All I can say is I can not wait to go back. On this visit, I ordered the Spiced Spear Creek Dorper lamb loin with skordalia, asparagus, beans, goats yoghurt and pistachio gremolata, topped with sweet potato crisps. This tantalising flavour combination harnesses the light tang of the goats yoghurts and compliments it with the creamy skordalia, completing the tender, juicy cuts of lamb loin. The coffee also complimented the flavours well. This dish, although quite filling and approaching dinner portion size, still left room for something sweet. I opted for the wildly acclaimed freshly baked to order chocolate chip cookies. There is a wait time of roughly ten minutes to allow for baking but it is perfectly reasonable after experiencing the result. Four hot, not too hard but not too soft, cookies with the chocolate chips still in a melted, almost thick syrupy, state. Simply divine. A glass of milk on the side to wash the cookies down with forms the perfect compliment. Although maybe counteracted by the quality, there is a small critique needed of the pricing. The lamb loin dish was $29 which is on the high side of lunch time pricing at a cafe. The freshly baked cookies were a very reasonable $10. A return visit for dinner service is definitely necessary at this exciting inner city gem. read more

This place is amazing! I was keen to find a cosy breakfast spot on my last day in Melbourne, and I find exactly that at The Grain Store. The coffee was excellent. Just the thing to enjoy sipping as I read the Saturday paper (one of my favourite things to do). And breakfast....well, can I just day the menu looked so good I spent a long time trying to decide and got some recommendations from the waitress. I eventually ordered the white mushrooms (which also happened to be the waitresses favorite, so who was I to argue?). Let me just say - OMG. I really like this place for its ambience, food and people. I wanted to rate it a Five Stars, but sadly had a Two Star food experience this morning. I had the Chorizo and Beans for breakfast this morning. The flavours were bold and layers of flavour, but the Chorizo was so tough that it was hard to cut with a knife. About midway through the dish I thought I tasted and felt sand on the little bit of spinach that is in the dish. When I got to the bottom of the bowl my mouth got an even bigger hit of sand and grit. We came on 11:00 AM on a Saturday and still needed to wait 40 minutes for a table and she said 10 minutes. Regardless of the long wait time, we decided to stay and chatted until our table was ready. Once we sat down the service was prompt as you would expect in a busy brunch place. We ordered: Wild Mushroom and Poached Egg Portobello Mushroom and Gruyere Potato Rosti Sweet Corn Fritter and Avocado Everything is really good. I am genuinely surprised because this place has the feel of a souless restaurant who's only concern is to seat you, and get you out the door. There is some of that because it is so busy, but next time I will come much earlier like 9:00 AM so I don't feel so rushed. By the time we left around 12:45 PM there was a huge line. Whilst the food was very good the service today left everything to be desired. I get it - it's Sunday. You're busy. You're tired from having a social life but you could smile. I tried this breakfast spot on Sunday morning, it sits at one end of Flinders Lane and from the outside looked pretty quiet, the inside was another story, The place was packed with customers, this included quite a significant line in the foyer of the apartments it is joined to. We ended up joining the line in order to try this place out, a positive was they allow you to order a coffee while you wait and then deliver it to you in the line. The menu was excellent, there are quite a number of unique breakfast options on the menu and it is a difficult decision trying to chose, on Sunday I opted for the Chilli and Fennel Sausage and Fried Onion Rings - this came with poached eggs, pearl lentils, pear chutney and leek fondue, as did my friend. I had spotted a girl on the table next to us with this and it looked fantastic. The food was fresh and the ingredients in this dish were so well matched. It was interesting that the dish had lentils in it which obviously goes with this cafe's name, pretty cool that they have tried to incorporate grains into most the menu items. The fit out of The Grain Store was lovely it's a fresh, clean, well spaced cafe and given how busy it was I still felt comfortable and not overpowered by noise. Staff were very attentive and even though they were super-busy they were more then happy to explain the menu items, answer our questions and make recommendations. My dining partner refuses to try it but it wasn't too bad. You can hardly taste the zucchini and the passionfruit cream was yumgasmic. I felt that the cake itself though was slightly on the dry side. I am not a huge coffee drinker so I ordered a relatively healthy decision and have juice. The house made spirulina, pineapple, pear & mint juice tasted strongly of pineapple and that's pretty much about it. I ordered spirulina expecting something murky green and overly pond scummy tasting- I know I am weird but I expect it and embrace it and it makes me feel healthy... Oh my god. Oh my goddddd. So damn good. If food could talk and it could sing out it's favourite place to be served, it would be The Grain Store. We arrived without a booking and the place was jam packed. The server promised us a 15 min wait and guess what? It was precisely that, even though the queue was getting longer by the minute. It was staggering to see how many people were rocking up at this joint. If it's this popular, surely it must be good, right? Right! We got the ricotta hotcakes and the portobello mushrooms. Sooooo goood. The hotcakes were to die for, the flavours were spot on. The the mushrooms just melted in your mouth from all the goodness. I could've had seconds. When the plates landed I thought the portion was too small but it was just perfect. The juices were also really refreshing and fresh. This place was seriously packed and a short wait was required for a seat at the communal table. The menu is full of yummy things and the golden porridge caught me eye, quinoa and stuff in a bowl. The table of sweetie bits by the counter was very tempting with all manner of good looking pastries and goodness but I managed to resist temptation. The golden porridge was, well, golden of course I assume with turmeric but I thankfully couldn't taste it. It was served with dons of yogurt and some preserved fruit of indeterminate origin but all in all excellent, ditto coffee and service. All in all a great spot and well worth a second visit which it will definitely get next time I am in town. read more

We called ahead to push our reservation back from 10am to 11am because we were driving 3 hours from the country and running a little late. We arrived at 10:55, and were told by the host with short hair and glasses that we were very early and would have to wait. She then told us that she changed our reservation to 11:15 instead of 11 because she thought we'd be even later than we originally said. Odd and inconvenient, but not the end of the world. We were seated after a few other tables eventually and received lovely service from the younger wait staff. My husband ordered the steak sandwich, but when it came out it was covered in mayo. My husband is allergic to egg, and the menu does not include egg as an allergen or ingredient for the steak sandwich. We asked the server if we could have a new sandwich, and instead she brought over the older host who sassed us at the door. The host then proceeded to lecture my husband about how it is his own fault for not telling them about his allergy, even though egg/mayo isn't located anywhere on the menu. He wasn't even offered a new sandwich. Like what was she trying to achieve by harassing us instead of helping us?? As a previous restaurant manager, I was absolutely appalled by her behavior and attitude towards us. I've honestly never seen anything like it. The Grain Store seems like it could be an establishment worth returning to if it weren't for their miserable acting manager/host. read more

The atmosphere was homely and very aesthetic. Nice setting. I got the house smoked salmon and spiced lemon couscous. It was too saucy and just too many flavours going on at the same time. There was a orange sauce that was very over powering. My friend got a bagel and she said it was very tasty. I also got an iced coffee. It wasn't too sugary. There was ice cream that wasn't too sweet. My friend got the spirulina. It basically tastes like pulpy apple juice. The service was very good, and friendly. The cost was a tad bit pricey. Overall good cafe, just wouldn't get the same dish again. read more
